Walk Where Jesus Walked in Israel (It’s Not as Easy as you Think)

It is a pleasure to be able to travel to Israel and walk in the footsteps of Jesus. Nonetheless, you may be astonished to learn that seeing Jesus on a conventional tour is not simple, even if you are on the vacation of a lifetime in the country of the Bible!

Some Challenges of Tours in Israel

People who travel to Israel to “Walk where Jesus Walked” are generally unprepared for the difficulties and diversions that they will meet throughout their journey. The timetable is already overflowing. The gang is moving too quickly. The handbook contains much too much information (particularly about Israeli politics!). Noise from the throng and sellers is something you have to deal with. Pickpockets are want your wallet, so keep it out of sight. You will come across rival religious groups that are staking out and preserving their territory and beliefs.

The presence of youthful Israeli troops armed with machine rifles makes you unsure whether to be comfortable or terrified.

A customer who collects trinket souvenirs is not someone you want to be.

You want to “Walk where Jesus Walked” – in Jesus’ footsteps, of course! You wish to have a personal encounter with Jesus. Other than that, why would you set aside 10 days or more, spend thousands of dollars, and fly to the opposite side of the world?

We’re Not Tourists — We’re Pilgrims!

As tour guides for a group visiting the Walk where Jesus Walked in Israel, Kristi and I were prepared to avoid the temptation to fall into the tourist trap. We didn’t want to rush things. A lot of information was too much for us, therefore we didn’t want to be overwhelmed. We wished to walk with Jesus and to behold the resurrected Christ in our midst, and this was our goal. Consequently, we engaged our hearts with the Lord via Scripture meditations and prayers. While visiting the holy places, we make time to locate a peaceful place to meditate and reflect on our experiences.

We were able to share our hearts with one another.

The Bible study, pilgrimage reading, and prayer that we engaged in prior to traveling to the Holy Land were extremely beneficial in ensuring that we had a holy experience when we were there.

Walking with Jesus at the Sea of Galilee

Walking through the historic Via Dolorosa was one of the highlights of my visit to the Old City. However, we determined that the Sea of Galilee was the most likely location to find Jesus. As we sailed across the lake, I pictured myself as one of Jesus’ disciples in the boat, with Jesus approaching us from the other side of the water. “Lord, if it’s really you, then tell me to come to you,” Peter prayed boldly. “Lord, if it’s truly you, then tell me to come to you,” I thought (Matthew 14:28). Our lunch break had begun when we arrived on the opposite shore of Lake Michigan.

• But I was hungry for much more than just food; I was hungry for Jesus.
• When you’re hungry for Jesus, who cares about what you’re eating?
• After that, I went on a stroll by myself in search of my Lord, hoping to find any way to establish touch with him.
• In Galilee, one of the ways I came to know Jesus had something to do with a rock.
• In the words of David, “My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge” is a prayer we might say (Psalm 18:2).

Just a Simple Rock

Despite being a modest pebble discovered on a lonely walk, it turned out to be an answer to prayer: My main concern is that I am with Jesus. The Sea of Galilee is represented by the form of this Ebenezer. It comes from a place where many memories were evoked: His loving presence was a soothing balm, like the sea named Gennesaret Lake (for its harp-like song and form), where heaven’s waters lap so beautiful and gentleAs they chant the words of Jesus: “Peace.” “Peace,” Jesus said. “Stay as still as possible.” A modest pebble discovered while on a solitary walk; The use of a precious stone to rub a prayer to Jesus wherever and everywhere is encouraged.

The miracles of his grace fill my heart with joy when I see the grin on his face!

What a blessing it is to walk where Jesus walks, to keep pace with him, and to speak and chat.

His yoke is light and comfortable to wear — I want to be tied to him at all times. He calls out to them as he walks on the sea and says,”Come to me.” Come closer,”I direct my gaze only on Jesus, hoping that one day I may be able to walk on water.

A Pilgrimage Prayer

Dear Jesus, we are travelers in search of you, whether we are on a particular pilgrimage to holy locations or in the midst of the ordinary routine of everyday life. We are aware that you are not just at the Sea of Galilee, but that you are also in our crowded streets and desolate neighborhoods. You’re present with me right now as I type these words on my computer in Irvine, California, and you’re present with each and every person who is reading these words, no matter where he or she is sitting on the planet.

We are anxious to be able to see past our blindness and catch a glimpse of your exquisite beauty.

You alone are our Rock – everlasting, powerful, truthful, and soothing – in the midst of our worries and challenges, our thrills and dreams, and everything in between.

Amen.

City Walk: Following Steps of Jesus Walking Tour, Jerusalem, Israel

The Latin phrase “Way of Grief” or “Way of Suffering” translates as “Way of Suffering.” This road is the only one in Jerusalem that has its Latin name, which is unusual considering that the majority of signage in Jerusalem are in Hebrew, English, and Arabic. The road is renowned with Christian pilgrims who think it follows in the footsteps of Jesus as he walked to his crucifixion with a cross on his back. The way along this route is marked by 14 stations, five of which are located within the Church of the Holy Sepulcher itself.

1. This location may be quite congested, and the signage might be difficult to locate.
2. While looking for a peaceful place to meditate or consider the religious importance of the region, some may find the bustling streets a little distracting.
3. The Stations of the Cross are denoted by the use of circular signs with Roman numerals, which are placed at each of the stations.
4. Typically, the tour begins at the place where Jesus was tried and convicted, which is located in the Muslim quarter of Old Jerusalem – near Lion’s Gate – while other travelers prefer Herod’s Palace, which is located near the Jaffa Gate.
5. The Via Dolorosa is free to enter and there is no admission fee.
6. Re-enactments of the Passion of the Christ are routinely staged along the Via Dolorosa, especially during Holy Week.
7. It is necessary to use extra caution when walking on some areas of the road if it is raining.
8. Don’t anticipate much time for peaceful thought unless you get up at 5 a.m.
9. You will need to move fast or risk being ran over by a motorbike, person or goat!

You should either have a tour guide or an extremely detailed map/book, and make sure you have your camera ready! Aside from the location’s spiritual significance, the artwork and architecture in the neighborhood are also highly spectacular.

Jerusalem Walking Tour: In the Footsteps of Jesus

This full-day tour begins with a pick-up from your hotel in Jerusalem by an air-conditioned bus. First, make a pit stop at the Mount of Olives, which provides a panoramic view of the entire city of Jerusalem. This mountain ridge, which lies east of the Old City and was named for the olive groves that once covered its slopes, is located east of the Old City. According to the gospels, this location was the site of a number of significant events in Jesus’ life, including the place where he ascended into heaven.

• The Basilica of Agony, which is near the Garden of Gethsemane, is a church dedicated to all nations that can be found on the Mount of Olives.
• Pass through the Kidron Valley, past the Jewish cemetery, and into the historic Old City.
• Visit St Anne’s Church, which is believed to be the birthplace of the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, and learn about her life.
• Afterward, return to your hotel.

Where You Can Walk in Jesus’s Footsteps

When people travel to the Holy Land, it is natural for them to desire to “follow in the footsteps of Jesus.” We both think that this is a good development. There are several places, however, where it cannot be proved that He was exactly where He claimed to have been. Because of the constant demolition and rebuilding of the city atop the debris throughout its stormy history, there are spots in Jerusalem that may be linked to Jesus, although much of the city is around 20 feet higher than Jesus would have been.

So, where can you go that you can be sure “Jesus was there” is true?

The thought of what fantastic discoveries lie just beneath your feet, ready to be discovered, makes you wonder!

The Southern Steps

Interestingly, these were the exact same steps that Jesus would have taken as he approached the Temple. By going up and down these stairs, you are treading in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. His point of view, on the other hand, was totally different! When he would have ascended these stairs, he would have been on his way to the Huldah gates, which would have allowed him to ascend to the Temple. The Temple has, of course, been destroyed (as foretold by Jesus), and the gates have been closed, but the stairwells have survived.

This is always a highlight and an awe-inspiring experience, knowing that you are ascending the same stairs that Jesus and his followers did thousands of years before. This is unquestionably hallowed ground! Wilson44691 – Original work, in the public domain,

Magdala

In the second century BC, the town of Magdala was established on the banks of the Sea of Galilee. It was a major regional center until it was destroyed during the Jewish Revolt in the first century AD. It was not until 2006 that the remnants of this city were unearthed. During excavations there in 2009, a stunning discovery was made: a synagogue from the first century AD. A menorah depicted in the Migdal synagogue, which is the region’s (and the world’s) oldest synagogue, is the world’s earliest portrayal of a menorah outside of Jerusalem.

Capernaum

Capernaum, often known as “The Home of Jesus,” played an important role in his early ministry and adult life. It was also the residence of a number of his followers, including Peter, Andrew, James, John, and Matthew, as well as other relatives. It is brought up in all four gospels as a setting for various tales to take place. While the current synagogue was constructed much later, during the Byzantine period, you can still see the foundations of the old synagogue beneath the “newer” one, which date back to the time of Christ.

Jesus was clearly present!

Aside from that, you can see the remnants of what is thought to have been Peter’s house, where Jesus is said to have cured Peter’s mother-in-law, among other things (Matthew 8:14-16).

The Pool of Siloam

This site, where Jesus healed a blind man in John 9, was not identified until 2004 after it had been demolished by the Romans in 70 AD during the destruction of the Temple. In preparation for entering the Temple, the pool was utilized for ceremonial purification. During the Feast of Tabernacles, it is believed that Jesus’ proclamation of providing “living water” was a direct allusion to the ceremonies that took place with water from this pool during that time period (John 7). Although the pool may not be the cleaning, copious spring that it was during Jesus’ time, there is little question that this is the location where it took place.

5. The Sea of Galilee

The Sea of Galilee, as well as its borders and surrounding region, serve as the background for Jesus’ mission. Despite the fact that the actual location of events along its borders can be in dispute and occasionally up for argument, the sea itself is unmistakable. The Sea of Galilee that exists now is the same sea that was mentioned in the Bible. Everything that happened here, including Jesus walking on water, fishing with his disciples, and feeding the 5000, happened because of this body of water.

Walk Where Jesus Walked: The Best of Israel Tour

Uncategorized The date is April 22, 2021. Just hours before I began what would likely become one of the most memorable of all my Christmas holidays as a Geneva student, I was standing at a gate in the Pittsburgh airport, nearly two years ago. Traveling to Israel and Egypt with the Bible Department was a dream come true for me because it would be my first overseas vacation ever. I got the chance to interact with a large number of new and familiar individuals while accompanied by three professors, a small group of my peers, alumni, and friends of the college.

1. When I look back on the trip, it truly did seem like a whirlwind.
2. David Tal, our tour guide, would accompany us on our journey and present facts as well as personal tales about each of the locations we visited.
3. Many of the locations we saw were recognizable, at least by name, such as Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Jericho.
4. Sitting on the river, singing praise songs, and taking in the location where the majority of the gospel tales took place was an unforgettable experience that cannot be described in any other way.
5. While some of the sites, like as Masada, Be’er Sheva, and the Golan Heights, were unfamiliar to me, they provided valuable perspective and history.
6. One of the advantages of traveling across Israel is the sheer expanse of the nation itself.
7. We started in the north and made our way down to the south.

Our first couple of nights’ accommodation was directly on the shores of Lake Galilee, and a hotel towards the end of the lake allowed us to stroll down to the Dead Sea.

One of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had was in that water, which I’ll never forget.

I was floating in the water when I was around waist deep due to the viscosity of the water.

After long days of sightseeing and exploring, the evenings were frequently spent at the hotel, enjoying huge buffet-style dinners and engaging in lively discussion.

This allowed us to discuss and debrief our experiences from the day’s events.

We were urged to write down our thoughts and feelings about each day of our great two-week adventure in a diary.

We were treated to devotionals from a variety of members of our tour group at various locations, and God’s presence was palpable throughout the experience.

My thoughts turned to God’s faithfulness as I stood among the ruins of the world’s oldest city, Jericho, and was reminded of His faithfulness in delivering the city to the Israelites thousands of years ago.

It was, without a doubt, the vacation of a lifetime, and the experience has forever altered my outlook on life.

Pilgrimage – Walking Where Jesus Walked – The Holy Land

Whether you take a ferry over the Sea of Galilee, take a stroll through the Garden of Gethsemane, or take a moment to reflect at the Wailing Wall, you’ll find that this one-of-a-kind Holy Land Tour is an extremely spiritual experience. Our program is primarily concerned with the history, theology, and tradition of the Bible. Pastor J.J. Wicke, of the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen, will accompany the group. 1. Depart from the McAllen International Airport on United Airlines, which will take us through Houston Intercontinental and Newark to Tel Aviv, Israel, for an overnight journey.
2. Arrival in Tel Aviv and transfer to Bethlehem on Day 2 (Wednesday, April 29, 2020).
3. In Bethlehem, you will spend the night.
4. Drive to Caesarea, which was originally the seat of the Roman province, and view the harbor from where St.
5. Continue on to Haifa, Mt.
6. Proceed to Muharka, the site of sacrifices and the location where the prophet Elijah battled the false prophets of Ba’al, and then return to your starting point.
7. Continue on to Tiberias, where you will have supper and spend the night.

Take a boat journey to the town of Capernaum, where you can visit an old synagogue as well as St.

Visit Tabgha, which has the Church of Peter’s Primacy as well as a historic mosaic depicting the Loaves and Fishes, which is also along the sea.

The afternoon excursion includes a visit to Golan Heights and the Springs of Banias, commonly known as Caesarea Philippi, where Peter said, “You are Christ.” Finally, spend the afternoon visiting the Traditional Baptism Site before heading back to Tiberias for supper and the night.

Arrive back in Tiberias in time for supper and the next day.

Today, we’ll be driving to the Old City of Jerusalem to see the sights.

Continue on to Qumran, where the Essene enclave was located, and visit the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were concealed for a brief while.

Before returning to your Jerusalem hotel for supper and the night, take a refreshing plunge in the Dead Sea to cool down.

Overview

As part of our journey, we will stop at the Church of the Ascension, which is located on the Mount of Olives. Jesus’ ascension to heaven is commemorated by the construction of a church on the site, and a rock with an imprinted footprint is believed to indicate the location where Jesus stood before his ascension (Luke 24:50 – 51). The initial church on this site was established in 390, although the majority of the chapel structure that we see now dates from the Crusader period (1150).

What to expect

As part of our journey, we will stop at the Church of the Ascension, which is located on the Mount of Olives. Jesus’ ascension to heaven is commemorated by the construction of a church on the site, and a rock with an imprinted footprint is believed to indicate the location where Jesus stood before his ascension (Luke 24:50 – 51). The initial church on this site was established in 390, although the majority of the chapel structure that we see now dates from the Crusader period (1150). The Church of the Pater Noster (Sanctuary of the Eleona) lies nearby, and it was here that Jesus taught his disciples the Lord’s Prayer.
