The Story

My favorite thing to do is watch the Gaither Homecoming movies, and every now and then, I’m shocked to see some of the luminaries of Southern Gospel music in the audience. Jim Hill, who is in his 80s as of this writing and still has his magnificent tenor voice, is one of the people I look forward to seeing. Jim Hill studied to be a professional singer as a young man, even going so far as to audition for the Metropolitan Opera, but, happily for us and the Kingdom of God, he elected to devote his life to gospel music instead.

  1. It was in the early 1950s that he would pen the poem “What a Day That Will Be.” According to family legend, his mother-in-law became dangerously ill.
  2. He then stated that thoughts had suddenly poured into his mind, and that when he returned home, he immediately grabbed a piece of cardboard and began writing them down.
  3. The Golden Keys Quartet was the first to perform the song, and the Homeland Harmony Quartet was the first to record it after they did.
  4. Another young hymn writer named Bill Gaither was discovered by the Golden Keys Quartet in the late 1960s, and the Golden Keys Quartet was instrumental in establishing his tunes later in the decade.

As previously announced, Jim was slated to be inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame at Dollywood on October 3, 2012, a ceremony that was both well-deserved and long overdue. Jim Hill, who passed away in 2018 at the age of 88, went home to be with the Lord.

WHAT A DAY THAT WILL BE

Last Sunday, I received the devastating news that my dearest buddy had passed away unexpectedly and unexpectedly. It’s still hard for me to believe that this has actually happened. (See my blog post from February 3) I’ll miss him a lot. The death of Jim (my buddy Jim) brings the total number of deceased friends in my family to five in the previous six years. This includes my father, father-in-law and loving aunt, as well as Norm, Gary, Ralph, my brother Terry and now Jim. To be honest, I’m currently the only remaining male from our wedding party who is still living.

  1. And it is this reality that has influenced my selection for this week.
  2. What a relief it is to have that knowledge as we prepare to say goodbye to their company and companionship while still on this planet.
  3. He claims that his mother-in-law grew very ill while he was away.
  4. Afterwards, he stated that he had just begun to fill his thoughts with words, but he did not have anything with which to record them.
  5. So he grabbed it up and began writing the lyrics of “What a Day That Will Be” on the back of it.
  6. Since then, the song has served as an anthem of encouragement for a countless number of individuals.
  7. There will be no more clouds in the sky and no more tears to darken the vision.
