Who Walked On The Water With Jesus?

8. Jesus Walks on Water (Matthew 14:22-36; Mark 6:45-56; John 6:16-24)

The main point of the presentation is to keep your eyes on Jesus.Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, as the key verse says. The author of faith is none other but He who is the author of faith.

  • He also ensures that it is flawless.
  • – Hebrews 12:2a (Hebrews 12:2) Props include: two or three spray bottles filled with water, hand-held battery-operated fans or paper fans (or even electric fans), and a storm soundtrack to accompany the action.
  • Teacher: Make a prior arrangement with some adults to come up front and distract the pupils at the appropriate time.
  • The adults should go about the room, softly spraying the children with water bottles and using fans to blow wind in their faces.
  • (If you’re using electric fans, turn them on and direct them toward the children.) As the Storm soundtrack plays, one adult should alternately turn on and off his or her lights.

Background/Review

Say something like this: Over the past few weeks, we have learnt a great deal about Jesus.First and foremost, we learned that the Jewish people had been waiting hundreds of years for their King..Then, after a lengthy wait, Jesus finally arrived.

  • Jesus taught that the kingdom of God was fundamentally different from the world we live in.
  • After that, we witnessed that Jesus had authority over nature when He used a single word to quiet the surging sea.
  • We discovered that Jesus has total control over demonic spirits, and that only Jesus has the authority to pardon sins on our behalf.
  • As we saw last week, when Jesus cured the lady with the blood problem and resurrected Jairus’ daughter from the dead, He possessed supernatural authority over disease and death.
  • As word spread about Jesus, the miracle worker, an increasing number of people expressed an interest in hearing from and seeing Him.
  • It appeared as though a large crowd had gathered wherever Jesus was.
  • 5,000 men, as well as women and children, congregated one day to hear Jesus speak, according to the gospels.
  • (Matthew 14:21; Luke 14:21) That suggests that there were maybe 20,000 people who came to hear Jesus preach on that particular day.

And, after sitting through hours of Jesus’ teaching, the audience was growing hungry itself.Jesus accepted the meal that had been given to Him by a small boy (John 6:9).It was only two fish and five little loaves of bread, yet Jesus broke that bread and continued to break it until it was completely consumed. In order to feed everyone in the gathering until they were satisfied, the disciples distributed enough bread and fish to go around. And there were twelve baskets of food left over after all of that!

(See also Luke 9:17.) Despite the fact that the disciples were there for this miracle, the Bible claims that they did not completely comprehend it (Mark 6:52).Their hearts were hard, or obstinate, according to the Bible (Mark 6:52).They were aware that Jesus was different, but they were unaware that He was the Messiah, God manifested in a human body (Matthew 14:33).

  1. They were not yet seeing with ″kingdom eyes,″ as the phrase goes.
  2. As a result, Jesus was ready to perform yet another miracle.
  3. This time, though, the disciples would fully comprehend who Jesus truly is.
  4. Teacher’s Note: We must be cautious about passing judgment on the disciples’ obstinate hearts.
  5. After all, they did not yet possess the Holy Spirit, who would lead them into all truth in the future (John 16:13).
  6. Despite being filled with the Spirit, how many times do we fail to perceive God’s presence and action in our lives?

Jesus Walks On The Water (Matthew 14:22-36)

Say this: Immediately following the miracle of the fish and the loaves of bread, Jesus had something new to share with His followers. He escorted the multitude away and dispatched the disciples across the Sea of Galilee to their destination.Keep in mind that the Sea of Galilee was truly a large lake.

  • The disciples were immediately ordered to get into the boat by Jesus.
  • He directed them to proceed ahead of Him to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, where He would meet them.
  • Then He ordered the throng to disperse.
  • Having sent them away, He walked up a hill by Himself to pray for a while.
  • When the evening came, He was the only one present.
  • The boat had already traveled a long distance away from land.
  • Because the wind was blowing directly against it, it was getting pummeled by the waves.
  • Jesus went out to meet with his disciples quite early in the morning.

He took a stroll around the lake. They were scared when they saw Him wandering about on the lake. They said, ″It’s a ghost!″ They screamed in terror as a result. As soon as Jesus saw them, he cried out to them, ″Be brave! It is, in fact, I.

″Do not be alarmed.″ – Matthew 14:22-27 (King James Version) Say this: When the storm winds were approaching, Jesus dispatched His companions across the lake.Inquire as to whether Jesus was taken by surprise by the windstorm.No.

  1. Say something like: ″Of course it wasn’t!″ They were sent into this storm by Jesus for a cause.
  2. He desired to put their faith to the test and teach them something about Himself that they were unaware of at the time.
  3. Let’s take a moment to reflect on this situation.
  4. Mark and John, as well as Matthew, tell the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection.
  5. John informs us that the boat had traveled more over three miles from the coast by this point (John 6:19).
  6. Mark informs us that Jesus could see the disciples from where He was praying on the mountaintop, according to the gospel of Mark (Mark 6:48).

The disciples were having a difficult time rowing since a strong wind was blowing directly into them from the north. There was only one way for Jesus to cross the lake because the disciples had stolen the boat and left him stranded.Jesus really came out onto the ocean to greet them!Another illustration of Jesus’ authority over nature may be seen here.Somehow, the water was able to support Him.The water had a different effect on Jesus than it had on the other disciples.

Even just getting across the lake was a challenge for the disciples.Jesus, on the other hand, strolled on top of the waves. When Jesus calmed the storm in our story a few weeks ago, do you remember what the disciples said?

  1. ″What kind of a man is this?″ they wondered.
  2. Even the winds and the waves are subject to His will!″ (See Matthew 8:27 for more information.) Don’t you ever wish you could experience what it was like to walk on water?
  3. At the very least, one of the apostles did!
  4. Mark claims that because it was so early in the morning, the sky was still black when they arrived (Mark 6:48).
  5. It’s no surprise that the males were apprehensive at first.
  6. The moment they heard Jesus’ voice, Peter responded with a response of his own.

Peter Walks On The Water (Matthew 14:28-29)

Peter was a pretty remarkable dude.He was the bravest of all the disciples. He uttered things that other people could only speculate about.

  • He was the sort of person who dared to do things that other people wouldn’t have had the courage to do in the same situation.
  • Peter was utterly sucked into Jesus’ world.
  • Peter wants to follow Jesus with his whole heart.
  • But, many times he committed errors.
  • “Lord, is it You?” Peter asked.
  • “If it is, tell me to come to you on the water.” ″Come,″ Jesus called out.
  • So Peter got out of the boat.
  • He walked on the water toward Jesus.

– Matthew 14:28-29, New International Version Observe and inquire: Why did Jesus call Peter, but not the other disciples, to come out to Him?As a result of Peter’s inquiry! As an example, Peter is the sole disciple who has begged to come to Jesus with him.Knowing Peter, it should come as no surprise that he desired to follow Jesus into the wilderness. The other disciples may have wanted to walk out to Jesus, but none of them would have dared to ask.

Peter begged to come to Jesus, waited for Jesus to summon him, and then obeyed. How do you view yourself today?Do you see yourself as more like Peter, who is ready and willing to ask God to use you, or do you see yourself as more like the other disciples, who waited in the boat waiting to see what would happen with Peter?

  1. According to the Bible, it is appropriate to pray to God for opportunity (Matthew 7:7).
  2. Older students may choose to participate in the following activities: ″If it’s You, please tell me to come to you on the sea,″ Peter pleaded as he got out of the boat.
  3. Peter wished to accept that Jesus was the Son of God, but he was unable to.
  4. Peter, on the other hand, was seeking for proof.
  5. He was pleading with Jesus to suspend him in the waves so that he might be certain that Jesus was the Son of the Living God.
  6. Jesus did not become enraged with Peter for asking this question.

″Come,″ Jesus simply asked him to do so.With enough confidence, Peter ventured out of the dry, solid boat in the dark, as the wind was churning up the waves around him.At first, Peter’s gaze was riveted on the Lord Jesus.Peter didn’t have to be concerned about the wind or the seas because he had trust that Jesus would not allow him to drown.Peter’s faith was strong because he was focused on Jesus at all times. He was aware of the authority that Jesus has over all things.

He was well aware of how much Jesus cherished him and that Jesus would never fail him.Application: When you keep your gaze fixed on Jesus, your faith will be strengthened. As we have seen, Jesus has complete authority over all things.

  1. Is there anything He isn’t capable of accomplishing?
  2. And Jesus has a soft spot for you.
  3. He cares for you so much that He is willing to give His life for you.
  4. When you get to know Jesus, you realize that He is absolutely deserving of your confidence.
  5. Maintaining your emphasis on His power and His love for you will help you to have a solid foundation of faith.

Peter Sinks (Matthew 14:30-31)

However, before long, Peter’s gaze was drawn away from Jesus. But when Peter noticed the wind, he became alarmed, according to Matthew 14:30.He began to sank to the bottom of the pool.

  • ″Lord, please save me!″ he cried out.
  • As soon as Jesus saw him, He put out His hand and seized him.
  • ″Your faith is so insignificant!″ ″He said it,″ he said.
  • ″How could you have doubted Me?″ – Matthew 14:30-31, New International Version In response to the wind and waves, Peter began to question whether Jesus was more strong than the storm that around him (Matthew 14:31).
  • Do you know what the Bible says about having reservations?
  • ″People who are filled with uncertainty are like the waves of the sea.
  • ″The wind whips them about and knocks them off their feet.″ (6:6) (James 1:6b) What an intriguing word picture you’ve created!
  • Peter was actually thrown around by the wind and seas as a result of his uncertainty.

He began to sank to the bottom of the pool.Inquire as to if anything about Jesus has changed that has led Peter to plummet. No!What has changed since then?Peter’s gaze was diverted away from Jesus.

Say: Peter took a deep breath and glanced at the terrifying storm. He was completely overwhelmed by things that were far more powerful than he could ever hope to be.Peter, on the other hand, should have recalled that nothing is more powerful than Christ!

  1. While he was focused on Jesus, the objects around him did not pose a threat to him in any way.
  2. Say something like, ″Let’s try a little experiment.″ Everyone raises their heads to look at me.
  3. Just keep your attention on me.
  4. Keep your gaze fixed on me at all times.
  5. Keep your gaze fixed on me, no matter what is going on around you.
  6. You have the option to blink, but you must not look away.

Now it’s time for the ″distracters.″ Continue to instruct the children to keep their attention on you as your scheduled adult volunteers attempt to distract them, the lights come on and off, and the storm music plays in the background. After a few minutes, express your gratitude to your helpers.Inquire as to whether it was challenging to maintain your concentration where it was needed to be.Keep an ear out for responses. As an example, consider Peter’s distractions: the wind was howling and the waves slamming on the shore.Peter’s attention shifted to the things going on around him, and he began to mistrust Jesus.

Suddenly, he was overcome with terror, and he began to sink.Of course, when Peter began to sink, Jesus was immediately there to pull him out of the water!Jesus gently reminded Peter that his faith was insufficient since he had doubted Jesus.

  1. Remember that Peter was the only one who was willing to step out of the boat that morning before passing judgment.
  2. Many people talk about how Peter fell into the water, but few people mention that the other disciples remained in the boat the entire time.
  3. Application: He advised the disciples to be bold and not to be terrified when they first saw Jesus walking on the water, and they did.
  4. Peter, on the other hand, was a mixture of trust and dread.
  5. That, I believe, describes the majority of us at times.
  6. We can begin with faith if we so choose.

We could start doing something that we know is right for us because we believe it is God’s will (like being nice to the kid that nobody likes).Alternatively, we might have faith that provides us with peace during a difficult time (like when a family member is sick, or our parents are arguing). But then our gaze is diverted away from Jesus. We take a glance around at the frightening scenario we find ourselves in.

  • We have our doubts about God’s ability to control the situation or about His willingness to assist us if we ask.
  • It is possible that we will quit doing what God has asked us to accomplish.
  • Alternatively, we could be overcome by fear.
  • You’re probably familiar with the type of fear I’m referring to – the kind that makes you feel like there’s a whirlwind in the pit of your stomach.
  • However, the fact is as follows: Many situations are too large or too frightening for you to handle, but nothing is too large or too frightening for Jesus!
  • Don’t get caught up in the circumstances you find yourself in.

Concentrate on the One who has complete control over every situation! What an incredible blessing you have! The Creator of the world, who has complete control over all things, is completely smitten with you!Zerubbabel (Zephaniah 3:17) He DESIRES to do what is best for you, and He is ABLE to accomplish what is best for you.He is your advocate.

Concentrating on that reality should provide you with tranquility. That reality should instill confidence in you, allowing you to step out of your boat and perform whatever it is He has called you to do without hesitation. No one’s faith is without flaws.

Even if you do stumble or have any doubts (like Peter did), talk to Jesus about it.He will help you through it (Mark 9:24).Jesus is the same every day.

Jesus is that near to you, and He will assist you in the same way He did with Peter, reaching out His hand and grabbing him to keep him safe.

The Disciples Praise Jesus (Matthew 14:32-33)

Say something like this: After Peter and Jesus boarded the boat, something incredible happened. And as soon as they climbed into the boat, the wind died away completely. Then those in the boat bowed their heads in worship, proclaiming, ″Truly, you are the Son of God.″ – Matthew 14:32-33, New International Version The disciples were finally able to comprehend who Jesus was.

  • They’d already witnessed Jesus perform miracles.
  • However, when Peter and the other disciples realized that Jesus could walk on water with the help of PETER, their lives were forever altered.
  • They were all familiar with Peter.
  • Some had known him for the most of their lives.
  • He was nothing more than a plain, clumsy, and outspoken fisherman.
  • Nevertheless, when he placed his faith in Jesus, he performed a miracle by walking on the water of the Sea of Galilee!
  • Peter’s life was revolutionized by Jesus.
  • Jesus, without a doubt, was the Son of God.

Application: What does this have to do with you? You’re well-known among your friends and family. They are well aware of your flaws and the blunders you make. They are well aware of your true identity. If you ask God to use you, step out in faith, and keep your eyes on Jesus, He will do amazing things in and through your life.

This is the essence of what it means to live in the kingdom of God.You will accomplish things that you could never accomplish on your own; you will love people who appear to be unlovable; and you will find peace when it appears that it is impossible. Then you will be a living testament to Jesus’s love for others.

  1. The people who are closest to you will be the first to recognize Jesus as the Lord of lords!
  2. POWERPOINT VERSE Verse of the Day: Let us keep our gaze fixed on Jesus.
  3. The author of faith is none other but He who is the author of faith.
  4. He also ensures that it is flawless.
  5. – Hebrews 12:2a (Hebrews 12:2) THE MAIN POINT OF THE PPT The main point is to keep your gaze fixed on Jesus.

What can we learn from the account of Peter walking on water?

Answer to the question As one of Jesus Christ’s most instructional miracles takes place, the apostle Peter jumps out of a boat and walks over rough water to meet the Lord on the sea, the miracle becomes one of the most memorable in history.According to Matthew 14:22–36, the miracle, which comes on the heels of another dazzling miracle, the feeding of the 5,000, is described in detail.Peter also walks on the water of the Sea of Galilee at this location, in addition to Jesus.

  • The story of Peter walking on water introduces several important lessons, some of which are clear and others which are not so evident, to the reader.
  • In only a few short minutes, Jesus had completed feeding a multitude of thousands with two fish and a few loaves of bread from his own resources.
  • However, even though the disciples are beginning to understand who Jesus is, their faith in Him still has much room to grow.
  • Following this miracle, Jesus immediately begins teaching His next lesson to the disciples.
  • By now, it is evening, and Jesus has not yet had the opportunity to spend time alone with His Father, which was the very reason He had traveled to this remote location near the sea.
  • As a result, Jesus sends His followers ahead of Him in a boat to cross the Sea of Galilee on their own.
  • Jesus makes time for personal devotions with the Father.
  • This is the first and most significant lesson we can learn from the story that will help us weather the storms of life in the future.

In order for Jesus to be alone on the mountain to pray, He sends the disciples away from Him.Despite the fact that He is burdened by the needs of a large number of people, the Lord prioritizes His time alone with God.As the disciples are making their way across the sea, a terrible and terrifying storm begins to rage.Jesus appears to them on the lake at a very early hour, approaching slowly toward them. The disciples are afraid because they believe He is a ghost.

Despite the fact that they have been with Christ for a long time, they are unable to recognize Jesus as He approaches them in a storm. When the Lord walks beside us in the midst of our own personal crises, we might be slow to acknowledge His presence.Jesus, on the other hand, recognizes the immaturity of our faith.

  1. This is what the Lord says to His disciples as words of encouragement: ″Take courage!
  2. It is, in fact, I.
  3. ″Do not be alarmed″ (Matthew 14:27).
  4. ″Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the lake,″ Peter responds, his voice full of enthusiasm and impulsiveness (Matthew 14:28).
  5. The Lord calls out to Peter, and the disciple gets out of the boat to accept the invitation.
  6. Peter makes his way toward Jesus while walking on water.

His small steps of trust, on the other hand, barely last for a split second before he shifts his gaze away from the Lord.Peter notices the wind and seas around him with his bodily eyes, and ″he was scared″ (verse 30), therefore he begins to sink.″Lord, rescue me!″ Peter screams out in desperation. The Bible says that Jesus immediately stretches forth His hand to grasp Peter (Matthew 14:30).In response, Jesus rebukes the doubters, saying, ″Why did you doubt?″ (See verse 31.) The lesson here is unmistakable for those who believe in God.If we lose sight of Jesus and instead concentrate on our concerns, we will crumble beneath the weight of our troubles.

The Bible says that if we call out to Jesus in faith, he will come to our aid and take us out of our seemingly hopeless condition.Peter allowed doubt to take the place of his faith.Even Peter, one of Christ’s closest friends, had struggled to put his whole confidence in the Lord during his entire time with him, despite his long association with him.

  1. As soon as Jesus and Peter get inside the boat, the storm subsides completely.
  2. The disciples are filled with amazement, admiration, and reverence as a result of what they have observed.
  3. Jesus receives a resounding affirmation: ″Truly, you are the Son of God″ (Matthew 14:33).
  4. The disciples go another step closer to acquiring mature faith as they begin to comprehend that Jesus is all-powerful, even over the forces of nature.
  5. In the midst of this turbulent event, Jesus utilizes it to help His disciples gain a better knowledge of who He is as their God and King.
  6. As the All-Powerful Lord of the Winds and the Waves, we can rely on Him to either calm the storm or calm us when He is present with us in the lifeboat.

It is still unclear what the most important lesson is.Peter’s heart is full of good intentions as he dives out of the boat, and this is reflected in his actions.Sometimes we take a leap of faith with similar good intentions, but, like Peter, our trust is quickly shattered as a result of unforeseen circumstances. The exercise of faith by Peter does not result in failure.

  • ″Save me!″ he cries out to the Lord, despite the fact that he is falling into fear.
  • God delights in hearing our cries for assistance.
  • It indicates that we are aware that we are unable to preserve ourselves.
  • Peter cries out in agony to the only person who can save him: the universe.
  • The disciple’s experience serves as a reminder that a loss in faith is nothing more than a stumbling block.
  • When we reach out to the Lord for aid, He is close by and will carefully bring us back to our feet.

Question of the Week

Answering the question One of Jesus Christ’s most educational miracles takes place when the apostle Peter gets out of a boat and walks over rough water to meet the Lord on the sea, which is one of the most instructive miracles ever performed.According to Matthew 14:22–36, the miracle, which comes on the heels of another brilliant miracle, the feeding of the 5,000, is described.Peter also walks on the water of the Sea of Galilee in this location, in addition to Christ.

  • The story of Peter walking on water has several important lessons, some of which are clear and others which are less evident.
  • In only a few short minutes, Jesus had completed feeding a multitude of thousands with two fish and a few loaves of bread from his own possession.
  • However, even though the disciples are beginning to understand who Jesus is, their faith in Him has much room to grow as well.
  • Jesus begins His next lecture immediately after performing this miracle.
  • Although it is nightfall, Jesus has not yet had the opportunity to spend time alone with His Father, which was one of the primary reasons He had traveled to this remote location by the sea in the first place.
  • To go across the Sea of Galilee, Jesus dispatches His followers in a boat, as shown in the video below.
  • The time Jesus spends alone with God is a blessing.
  • This is the first and most significant lesson we can take away from the story to help us weather the storms of life in the years ahead of us.

In order for Jesus to be alone on the mountain to pray, he sends the disciples out.He prioritizes solitary time with God even though He has a plethora of needs pressing in on Him at any given time.During their journey across the sea, a huge and terrifying storm erupts around them.Jesus appears to them on the lake at a very early hour, heading towards them. The disciples are horrified, believing He is a ghost.

While they have been with Christ for a long time, they do not recognize Jesus as He approaches them in the midst of a thunderstorm. When the Lord stands beside us in the midst of our own personal storms, we might be slow to acknowledge Him.We have a faith that is immature, yet Jesus knows this.

  1. ″Take courage!,″ the Lord says to His followers as a word of encouragement.
  2. The person speaking is me.
  3. Never be scared to ask for help (Matthew 14:27).
  4. When asked what he would do if it is the Lord, Peter responds, ″If it is you, tell me to come to you on the sea,″ which is characteristically exuberant and spontaneous (Matthew 14:28).
  5. Once Peter has accepted the Lord’s invitation, he steps out of the boat….
  6. As Peter approaches Jesus, he is seen walking on water.

Despite this, his modest steps of trust only linger for a time before his gaze is drawn away from the Lord.Peter notices the wind and seas encircling him with his bodily vision, and ″he was scared″ (verse 30), therefore he begins to sink.″Lord, rescue me!″ Peter screams aloud.(Matthew 14:30), and Jesus extends forth His hand to grasp Peter right away.’You of little faith,’ Jesus continues.’Why were you so hesitant?’ (See also verse 31.) The lesson here is apparent for those who believe in what is happening.

If we lose sight of Jesus and instead concentrate on our concerns, we will succumb to the weight of our troubles. The Bible says that if we call out to Jesus in faith, he will come to our aid and raise us out of our seemingly hopeless circumstance.Peter allowed his faith to be undermined by uncertainty.

  1. Although he had spent so much time with Jesus, even Peter, one of Christ’s closest companions, had struggled to place his total confidence in him during their relationship.
  2. The storm subsides as soon as Jesus and Peter board the boat.
  3. Awe, devotion, and worship of the Lord are the disciples’ responses to what they’ve experienced.
  4. ″Truly, you are the Son of God,″ they proclaim to Jesus (Matthew 14:33).
  5. The disciples go another step closer to acquiring full faith as they begin to realize that Jesus is all-powerful, even over the forces of nature.
  6. In the midst of this turbulent event, Jesus utilizes it to help His disciples get a deeper knowledge of who He is as their God and King.

He is the All-Powerful Lord of the Winds and the Waves, and when He is there with us in our lifeboat, we may rely on Him to either quiet the storm or to calm ourselves. The investigation of a critical lesson is ongoing.Peter’s heart is full of good intentions as he dives out of the boat, and this is evident.Even while we have identical good intentions as Peter, we can sometimes take a leap of faith that ends up failing us just as quickly.

  • Although Peter’s faith is tested, he does not fail.
  • ″Save me!″ he cries out to the Lord, despite the fact that he is terrified.
  • When we scream for rescue, God delights in hearing us.
  • It implies that we are aware that we are helpless.
  • When no one can assist him, Peter screams out to the one person who can.
  • The disciple’s experience serves as a gentle reminder that a break in faith is little more than a blip on the radar screen.

When we reach out to the Lord for aid, He is close by and will quickly bring us back to our feet.Go back to: Matthew-related questions. In the story of Peter walking on water, what can we take away from it?

  • A storm is on its way.
  • Jesus appears to be walking on water.
  • Peter appears to be walking on water…
  • However, things aren’t quite as good as they seem.
  • Peter finds himself drowning, and Jesus has intervene to save him.
  • It’s a very remarkable story.
  • However, there is more to the tale than what is shown in the headlines.
  • In fact, I believe that if we look a little further, we will discover some really strong and applicable lessons for our lives today.

Exactly that is my goal with this blog post: to go deeply into the narrative of Peter walking on water and explore what lessons may be learned for us today.Let us have a look at the narrative of Peter walking on the sea.

The Setting In Matthew 14:22-33

The Gospels of Mark and John also include the account of Jesus walking on water.Matthew’s story, on the other hand, is unusual in that it is the only Gospel in which Peter is recorded as walking on water. For the purposes of this post, we will concentrate on Matthew 14:22-33 because it contains the most information.

  • When we read God’s Word, it is critical that we always read it in its proper context.
  • We should take the time to study the verses before and after this one to ensure that we completely comprehend what is taking place.
  • The tale of Jesus feeding the 5,000 people takes place just before Peter walks on water (Matthew 14:13-21).
  • The disciples’ faith must be at an all-time high at this point.
  • They had just witnessed a few loaves of bread and a few pieces of fish feed a large group of people.
  • According to Matthew 14:22-23, after this, Jesus immediately ordered the disciples to get into the boat and accompany him to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which they did.
  • Following this, Jesus dismisses the crowd and ascends a mountainside to pray by himself in seclusion.
  • So far, everything appears to be normal…

However, things are about to get better.Later that night, a storm begins to gather strength.According to Matthew, there were severe waves and a strong wind in the area. They were seasoned fishermen, and storms were regular in this part of the world. However, the sea had claimed a great number of lives and was not to be trifled with in any manner.

(See Matthew 14:24 for more information.) Things are about to get a whole lot more intriguing.

Jesus Walks On Water

As morning approaches and the first rays of light begin to show, Jesus makes the decision to see the disciples. How?He takes a stroll.

  • On the still, turbulent surface of the lake.
  • Jesus is walking on water toward the disciples in the boat, who are still a considerable distance away from where he is standing.
  • (See Matthew 14:25 for further information.) The disciples are perplexed as to what or who is approaching them from behind.
  • They conclude that it must be a ghostly presence.
  • According to a prevalent myth among seamen of the time, individuals who drowned would return to haunt the seas.
  • They didn’t know what they were looking at, but they didn’t believe it could have been Jesus at all.
  • (Matthew 14:26; Mark 10:45) No one can really blame them for this.
  • No one has ever stepped on water before this time in history.

Jesus recognizes their trepidation and speaks out to them.″Do not be afraid! It is, in fact, I.″Do not be alarmed.″ Matthew 14:27 (KJV) In response to their apprehension, Jesus emphasizes, ″It is I.″ These were the phrases that Jesus frequently used to assert his divinity. In other words, Jesus is telling the disciples that they should be courageous and not be afraid since he was present with them.

″Where Jesus is present, there is no need to be afraid,″ says Dr.Tom Constable. If you were to stop the tale just after Jesus walks on water, there would still be a lot to learn from it.

  1. However, the battle is not yet done.
  2. Suddenly, everything starts to get even more fascinating.

Peter Walks On Water

Peter has a reputation for being a bit of a bulldog. He is fast to talk before he has a chance to consider his words. And while this led him into problems from time to time, it also allowed him to see and do things that no one else had the opportunity to see or do.

  • Simon Peter reacts to Jesus’ claim with a brash assertion of his own.
  • I pray to the Lord that if it’s you, please tell me I may come to you on the sea.″ (Matthew 14:28; Mark 12:28; Luke 12:28) ″Come,″ Jesus says as his response, in a single word.
  • Peter leaps over the edge of the boat with a great amount of faith and courage.
  • I’m aware that we prefer to point the finger at Peter for what occurs afterwards.
  • But try to stay in the present moment for a second.
  • Even in the midst of violent gusts and seas, Peter places his faith in Jesus to walk out of the boat.
  • That is a remarkable demonstration of confidence in Jesus Christ.
  • None of the other disciples ventured to take a step outside the boat with him.

In Matthew 14:29, it is simply stated that Peter walks on water to reach Jesus. Those first few steps must to have seemed weird to you. But… Nevertheless, Matthew 14:30 pauses this magnificent moment with the conjunction but.In the midst of his walking on water, Peter begins to realize how violent the wind and waves are, and he begins to move his gaze away from Jesus. He becomes distracted by his terrifying surroundings, and he ends up drowning.

Peter’s self-doubt was going to take him out from under him.As the ship began to sink, Matthew records that he was terrified. What are your thoughts?

  1. He had to have been scared to death.
  2. ″LORD SAVE ME!″ I believe he shouted out as he gulped for one last breath before succumbing to the depths of the ocean.
  3. Jesus doesn’t have time to waste.
  4. In Matthew 14:31, it says that Jesus instantly put out his hand and snatched him up in his embrace.
  5. After Peter had been rescued, Jesus reprimanded him for his lack of confidence in God.
  6. In his book The Chronological Life Of Christ, Mark Moore portrays the scolding thus way: ″Jesus scolded him for his weak faith, despite the fact that it was stronger than that of the other disciples who stayed in the boat.″ This chastisement was used by Jesus to assist Peter and the other disciples realize that they needed to have complete and total faith in Him at all times.

Peter ended up being both a good and a negative example for others.″Jesus rescued him from a drowning grave, just as God had rescued countless others from similar situations.″ Nonetheless, this is not the final miracle.Instantaneously when Jesus and Peter return to the boat, the wind and waves cease to be a problem.Three miracles are contained within this passage: 1.Jesus is able to walk on water.2.

Peter appears to be walking on water.3.The dissipation of the hurricane.

  1. Despite this, none of the spectacular events that have occurred represent the story’s conclusion.
  2. The climax of this story is found in Matthew 14:33.
  3. It is not the miracles that are significant; rather, it is the disciples’ devotion of Jesus.
  4. It is the first time they have referred to Jesus as the Son of God in this manner.

5 Lessons From Peter Walks On Water

As a result, Jesus walks on water and Peter walks on water, respectively. But what does this signify for us in the present day? Let us conclude by considering five practical truths that we might learn from Matthew 14:22-33.

Peace Is Not Found In The Absence Of The Storm, But In The Presence Of Jesus

When Jesus invited Peter to come to him, he did not immediately calm the seas.Instead, he urged Peter to come out into the storm and into the choppy waves with him.Peter’s lack of trust was rebuked because he moved his gaze away from Jesus and instead fixed it on the storm, as recorded in the book of Acts.

  • We believe that when the waves of life are quiet, we may find tranquility.
  • However, Jesus never promised us a smooth sailing experience.
  • Instead, he vowed to be with us at all times.
  • Jesus’ presence brings peace, even in the midst of the most difficult of circumstances.
  • Peter’s walk on the water shows us that even in the midst of a storm, we may find calm IF we keep our gaze fixed on Jesus….
  • The storms of life provide us with ample cause to be fearful.
  • However, Jesus is greater than even the most terrifying of storms.

Faith Requires Stepping Out Of The Boat

We enjoy the feeling of being comfortable. We appreciate security. And that isn’t entirely a bad thing.

  • However, our desire for these items is frequently exaggerated.
  • Sometimes Jesus will urge you to take a chance and put your faith in him.
  • This is normal.
  • Every now and again, you have to get out of the boat.
  • We, like the apostle Peter, will occasionally step out of the boat only to be gripped with dread as we continue on our journey.
  • We’re going to drown.
  • However, Jesus is right there to catch you if you fall.
  • You may trip and fall, but you will not drown.

My hunch is that the following time Peter ″stepped out of the boat,″ he did it with a greater sense of assurance. His faith and trust in Jesus grew stronger as time went on.The same will be true for you as it was for me.The more leaps of faith you take, the less difficult it becomes.Once you’ve witnessed God’s faithfulness, it’s easy to put your faith in him even more.

As a result, get out of the boat.

Without Jesus You Will Sink

Peter’s walk on the water was only a few minutes long.It was short-lived, however, since he moved his gaze away from Jesus.Peter learnt a valuable lesson that day, and it is one that we should not forget.

  • When we lose sight of Jesus, the storms of life will rapidly engulf us and drag us away.
  • As a pastor, I witness this on a regular basis.
  • When Christians lose their focus on Jesus, they soon tumble to their knees.
  • They are pulled into temptations by the devil.
  • They become overwhelmed by the demands of life.
  • They lose sight of who is in command.
  • Storms are a regular occurrence in life.
  • Storms of epic proportions.

Storms that will wreak havoc.Unless, of course, you keep your gaze fixed on Jesus. You can not only endure, but you can also walk on water above the storm if you have Jesus by your side.Maintain your focus on Jesus.

Worship Is Our Response

Perhaps the most significant lesson to be learned from the narrative of Peter walking on water is how we respond to the power of Jesus. It’s a kind of worship. When we come across Jesus, we should bow down and adore him.

  • Matthew deliberately draws attention to this particular issue since it is the point.
  • This wasn’t a narrative about Peter and his faith, or rather, his lack thereof.
  • In the end, it all came down to the power of Jesus.
  • The disciples’ attitude to Jesus Christ should serve as a model for our own.
  • When we come into contact with him, we should be taken to a place of worship.
  • It should serve as a constant reminder of who we are and who he is.

When You Follow Jesus He Will Do Incredible Things Through You

  • As a result of your life, I am confident that God want to convey an awesome tale through you. You have no idea what He wants to do in and through you. He wants to do things that you can’t even comprehend. God has provided you with opportunities to walk on water. God intends for your life to be a good narrative to be told by him. But, all too often, we settle for stories that are uninteresting and safe. I’m willing to guess Peter was referring to the time he was able to walk on water for the rest of his life. It’s a fantastic story! Why? Because he was willing to take a chance. He didn’t take any chances. God desires the same thing for you. He wants to be a part of your life narrative and convey a wonderful story. Will you give him permission? More information may be found at: Thank you for taking the time to read my blog article! What Jesus Showed the Apostles by Walking on Water

The New Testament Bible story of Jesus walking on water is one of the most widely told narratives and one of the most significant miracles performed by Jesus in his lifetime. The incident takes place immediately after another miracle, the feeding of the 5,000 people, had taken place. This experience persuaded the twelve disciples that Jesus is, in fact, the Son of God who is still alive.

  • Because of its religious significance, the story serves as the foundation for several important life lessons that guide believers in their religious practices.

Key Verses

  • When they saw him, they were all terrified, according to Mark 6:50–51. Jesus, on the other hand, talked to them right away. It was his way of saying, ″Don’t be frightened.″ ″Do not be afraid! ″I have arrived!″ After that, he went inside the boat, and the wind died down completely. They were completely taken aback (NLT)
  • The Bible says in Matthew 14:29–31 that Jesus said, ″Yes, come.″ As a result, Peter climbed over the side of the boat and began walking across the sea toward Jesus. However, when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he became terrified and began to sink into the water. ″Lord, save me!″ he cried out in desperation. As soon as Jesus saw him, he reached out and grasped him. ″You have such a small amount of faith,″ Jesus responded. ″Can you tell me why you were so skeptical of me?″ (NLT)

Scripture References

In the Gospels, Jesus walks on water in Matthew 14:22-33, Mark 6:45-52, and John 6:16-21, as well as other places. The reference to the apostle Peter walking on water is not included in the gospels of Mark and John, on the other hand.

Bible Story Summary

Following the feeding of the 5,000, Jesus Christ dispatched his disciples ahead of him in a boat to cross the Sea of Galilee to the other side.Later that night, the disciples came upon a storm that made them feel uneasy and threatened them with death.Their dread quickly changed to horror as they saw Jesus strolling toward them across the surface of the water, and they began to believe that they were seeing the appearance of a ghost.

  • According to Matthew chapter 27 verse 27, Jesus instructed them, ″Take a deep breath and go for it!
  • It is, in fact, I.
  • Don’t be intimidated.″ (NIV) Peter said, ″Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the sea,″ and Jesus encouraged Peter to do just that, which Peter gladly accepted.
  • While walking on the sea, Peter took his eyes off of Jesus and saw only the wind and waves, which caused him to begin to sink.
  • As soon as he took his eyes off of Jesus, Peter began to sink.
  • When Peter called out to the Lord, Jesus quickly put out his hand to grab him in his arms.
  • As Jesus and Peter clambered into the boat together, the storm came to an abrupt halt.
  • Following their witnessing of this miracle, the disciples prostrated themselves before Jesus and said, ″Truly you are the Son of God.″

Lessons From the Story

  • According to Christians, this narrative has life lessons that go beyond what is immediately apparent: Making place for God: Jesus dispatched his followers so that he could go alone to a mountaintop and pray alone in solitude. Despite his hectic schedule, Jesus made spending time with God a primary priority in his daily life. The narrative serves as a reminder to Christians of the need of making space for God in their lives.
  • Recognizing the Lord’s presence: Despite the fact that they had been with Jesus for a long time, the disciples did not recognize him as he approached them in the midst of the storm. The narrative serves as a reminder to Christians that when the Lord appears to them in the midst of their own personal troubles, they may not recognize him.
  • Concentrating on Jesus: Peter did not begin to sink until he took his eyes off of Jesus and began to gaze about him at the wind and the seas. According to the lesson, when Christians take their eyes off of Jesus and concentrate on their challenging circumstances, they begin to crumble under the weight of their issues and eventually perish. If we call out to Jesus in trust, he will come and take our hands in his and lift us over what appears to be insurmountable circumstances.
  • Restoring faith after a lapse: When Peter got off the boat, he had excellent intentions, but his faith began to wane as time went on. Peter’s leap of faith, on the other hand, did not result in disappointment. His voice rang out to the Lord even though he was terrified, knowing that Jesus was the only one who could assist him. This incident serves as a reminder to believers that a temporary loss of faith is only that: a temporary loss of faith. The Lord is still there for believers when they call out to him.
  • Weathering the storm with Jesus: As soon as Jesus entered into the boat, the storm subsided completely. Those who believe in Jesus can enjoy peace of mind knowing that he will calm the tumultuous waves of life when they are in his company.

What was the meaning of Jesus walking on water?

Answer to the question Immediately following His miraculous feeding of the 5,000 with only five loaves of bread and two fish (as reported in three of the Gospels; Matthew 14:22–36; Mark 6:45–56; John 6:16–21), Jesus performed the miracle of walking on water (Matthew 14:17).Jesus’ disciples were convinced that He was the Son of God by the miracle of His walking on the water (Matthew 14:32–33), but it was the miracle of Jesus walking on the water that convinced them the most. The action of the narrative takes place near the Sea of Galilee, which is located in the lower half of the Jordan Valley, in a mountain range that rises to 4,000 feet above sea level and is home to the apostle Jesus.

  • Despite its name, the lake lies 700 feet below sea level in the Mediterranean Sea.
  • One of the most notable characteristics of this body of water is that it is particularly vulnerable to storms that may come on suddenly and be extremely powerful.
  • This type of storm is triggered by the collision of cold air surging down from the mountains surrounding it with warm, moist air rising from the surface of the lake itself.
  • After sunset, his disciples proceeded down to the lake, where they boarded a boat and began their journey to Capernaum.
  • By this time, it was dark, and Jesus had not yet arrived to join them.
  • There was a heavy wind blowing, and the sea became choppy.
  • At about three or three and a half miles into their row, they noticed Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water, and they were frightened.
  • But he assured them, saying, ‘It is I; do not be alarmed.’ Then they were willing to put him in the boat, and the boat arrived at the coast where they were headed almost immediately″ (John 6:16–21).

There are several noteworthy aspects of this miracle that should be noted.″The boat was already a fair way from land, buffeted by the waves since the wind was blowing directly against it,″ Matthew explains.Matthew 14:24–25 tells us that ″during the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went out to meet them, walking on the lake.″ Despite the fact that they were only planning to go a short distance, the storm was so powerful that, despite their best attempts, they were forced nearly four miles out into the middle of the sea by the storm.Because it was the fourth watch of the night (from 3:00 AM to 6:00 AM), they had been rowing and straining at their oars for about nine hours at this point! They were completely depleted of all energy.

When the disciples first saw Jesus walking on the lake, according to Mark, they believed He was a ghost and ran away.It was because they were all terrified that they screamed because they saw Him (Mark 6:48–50).As a result, we have arrived at the second and most important point of this miraculous event.

  1. When we are in the midst of a storm, Jesus is always there for us.
  2. Isaiah’s words to the people of God, ″When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep you away,″ come to mind (Isaiah 43:2).
  3. In some cases, God may not appear at the time we expect Him to, because He knows when we are most in need of His assistance.
  4. Jesus had waited until the boat was as far away from land as it could possibly be before appearing to them, when all hope had been lost.
  5. In essence, Jesus was putting the disciples’ faith to the test, which necessitated the removal of every human prop.
  6. Why did Jesus choose to walk on water?

To demonstrate to His disciples that the very thing they feared, the raging, seething sea, was merely a series of steps that He had to take in order for Him to reach them Often, we fear the difficult experiences of life, such as illness, the loss of loved ones, and financial hardships, only to discover that these experiences can actually bring Jesus closer to our hearts and minds. However, we must inquire as to why they failed to recognize Jesus. The answer is that they weren’t looking for Him in the first place. If they had waited in faith, they would have recognized Him almost immediately.Instead, they drew the incorrect conclusion that His appearance was that of a ghost and ran with it.In essence, fear and faith are incompatible with one another because fear frequently causes people to lose sight of the presence of God in their lives.

The third significant point is that Jesus demonstrated that He was in command of the elements, which is something only God is capable of accomplishing. His revelation to the disciples, who immediately recognized His divinity and responded with a confession of faith in Jesus as God, was as follows: ″The wind died down. Those in the boat then worshiped him, proclaiming: ″Truly, you are the Son of God,″ as recorded in Matthew 14:32–33.

  1. This was the first time the disciples referred to Jesus as the Son of God, a statement that, in fact, built on what they had said about Him earlier in Matthew 8:27: ″Jesus, you are the Son of God.″ ″What kind of a man is this?″ says the author.
  2. ″Even the winds and the waves bow to his authority.″ ″Truly, you are the Son of God,″ they declare in response to their own question.
  3. Even though they still had a long way to go in terms of spiritual understanding, the disciples’ faith in the Lord was growing stronger every day.
  4. Furthermore, it is said that this was the first time the disciples offered worship to Jesus.
  5. The magi from the East came to worship Jesus, according to Matthew 2:11.
  6. Later on, it is reported that a leper came to Jesus and worshipped him (Matthew 8:2).

In Matthew 9:18, the ruler of the synagogue does the same thing. The disciples, on the other hand, were worshipping Him for the first time. The fact that their worship is tied in with their confession should not be overlooked as well (Matthew 14:33).And this is what worship is all about: acknowledging who God is and praising Him for who He is as well as for what He has done in our lives.

  • That it was in this story that the disciples took the first step and acknowledged Jesus as the Son of God is a significant milestone.

What is the significance of the account of Peter walking on the water?

Why does the story of Peter walking on the sea have such meaning to us?″ Tambuli, June 1984, 15–17 degrees Fahrenheit Stake Sunday School president and Gospel Doctrine instructor, Annandale Virginia Stake, David Lee is a counselor in the stake Sunday School presidency and a Gospel Doctrine teacher. When trying to comprehend what happened when Peter walked on the water, it’s important to first consider the environment in which it occurred.Jesus directed his followers to board a ship and cross the Sea of Galilee, while he remained behind to send away the throngs of people and pray.

  • The small ship was tossed around by the waves as a result of a windstorm that blew up on the sea while they were on their journey.
  • To make matters worse, the disciples were approached by what they believed to be a ghost, which caused them to scream in terror.
  • What they saw was Jesus walking on the water, and they were amazed.
  • Despite the Savior’s assurances that it was he and that they had nothing to be afraid of, several on the ship remained unconvinced.
  • ″If it is thou, command me to come unto thee on the river,″ Peter said in response.
  • ″Come,″ Jesus said as a response.
  • (See Matthew 14:28–29.) Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water, just like Jesus.
  • After his attention was drawn away from his Master and toward the buffeting winds around him, Peter’s faith began to wane, and he began to sink helplessly into the water.

He shouted out, pleading with Jesus to come to his aid. After firmly clasping Peter’s hand and assuring him of his safety, the Master gently reprimanded Peter, saying, ″O thou of little faith, what caused thee to doubt?″ Then, ″as soon as they boarded the ship, the wind died down.″ (See Matthew 14:31–32.) This was a very spectacular spectacle, proving to the Lord’s disciples once more his dominion over the forces of nature. It was on this very same Sea of Galilee that Jesus had calmed a storm the year before.(See Matt.8:23–27 for further information.) If his goal at this point was to instill an even stronger conviction in the hearts of his disciples that he was, in fact, the Chosen One sent with power and authority from the Father, he was successful, as we read, ″Then those who were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying: Of a truth, thou art the Son of God.″ (See Matthew 14:33.) Furthermore, I would speculate that he was imparting an essential lesson regarding our connection with him as our Savior.

I believe this is true.During his career, Jesus spent a significant amount of time teaching using parables: ″And he said many things unto them in parables…″And he did not speak to them without using a parable.″ (See Matthew 13:3, 34.) Consider the experience of Christ and Peter walking on the water as a type of dramatic parable from which we may draw many important conclusions.

  1. As with Christ’s spoken parables, there are several levels of significance to be derived from this experience.
  2. A thrilling adventure at sea takes place on the surface of the story, as the Lord, using supernatural power, saves a disciple from drowning and, maybe, also prevents the ship from capizing.
  3. The nature of authority, power, and miracles are all discussed on a deeper level as well.
  4. We are in awe of the Son of God as he directs the forces of nature to respond to his instructions.
  5. On a deeper level, we may be able to discern extra meaning in what happened that day on the Sea of Galilee, a symbolism that might provide us with valuable insights into our own life experiences.
  6. In answer to their master’s request, Peter and the other disciples set off on their journey to the Holy Land.

Our journey through mortality began as a voluntary response to the will of God, just as it did for everyone else before us.As with the disciples on board, who were well aware of the hazards of going on the Sea of Galilee, with its unexpected storms, we embarked on our voyage with the knowledge that there would be difficulties along the way.In this life, we learn from Peter that temporal supports can occasionally crumble—or even sink—in the face of life’s storms and calamities. We learn that there are forces capable of disrupting our most carefully devised strategies. But
