Is it wrong to have pictures of Jesus?

QuestionAnswer It was in Exodus 20:2 that God introduced humans to His Law by stating who He is and warning them that they would have no other gods but Him. This was followed by a warning that they would have no other gods but Him in all of their affairs. As a result, he promptly followed up by outlawing the creation of any image of anything “in heaven above, on earth beneath, or in the seas beneath” (Exodus 20:4) for the purpose of worshipping or bowing down to it. The most remarkable aspect of the history of the Jewish people is that they disregarded this commandment more than any other in the entire history of the world.

This began with Moses’ building of the golden calf, which occurred at the same time that God was writing out the Ten Commandments for Moses (Exodus 32).

Of all, just because someone has a picture of Jesus hanging in their house or church does not suggest that they are engaging in idolatry.

However, there is nothing in the New Testament that would directly prohibit a Christian from keeping a picture of Jesus in his or her possession.

The Lord, however, cannot be reduced to a two-dimensional image, and no prayer or devotion should be offered to a two-dimensional representation of the Lord.
In addition to this, it is important to remember that even the most beautiful picture of Jesus Christ is nothing more than one artist’s interpretation of what the Lord appeared to be like.
The apostles Matthew, Peter, and John, as well as Jesus’ own brothers James and Jude, all provided us with precise descriptions of Jesus’ personal appearance if the specifics of His physical appearance were vital for us to know.
It is up to us to use our imaginations.

First and foremost, any portrait, image, or statue of Jesus Christ used for religious purposes is a blatant breach of the Second Commandment and should be avoided at all costs. “You shalt not create unto you any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the sea under the earth,” according to Exodus 20:4-5. “You shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them.” Furthermore, it is most commonly the case that the image or statue itself becomes the object of devotion, which would be a violation of the First Commandment (Exodus 20:3), which states, “You must have no other gods before Me.” The great majority of the depictions of Christ bear little similarity to the way He truly appeared in the flesh.

Idolatry In The Old Testament

Of course, there was the issue of worshipping an idol that was illegal, and that worship frequently included immorality, among other things.

Idolatry In The New Testament1

The New Testament gives more information on the subject of idols, which is consistent with the biblical process of progressive revelation. It’s also worth noting that Jesus never stated anything against idolatry in the Gospels, which is probably a good thing to remember. I’m not trying to make a point here; I’m just trying to draw attention to something that I’ve seen. A Word About Application

After all, what does it matter if a person continues to believe that images of Jesus constitute a type of idolatry? Is it not reasonable to conclude that this is a matter of personal conviction rather than a deeply held fundamental of the faith that has been historically embraced within Christianity, given the fact that very highly respected evangelical scholars and theologians disagree on the acceptability of the picture of Jesus? And, if it is a question of conviction, shouldn’t we follow Paul’s instructions in Romans 14 and 15 in order to avoid any misunderstanding?

In thinking about this, I’m reminded of the topic of divorce and remarriage, which was addressed by Bethlehem Baptist Church some years ago.

The church, on the other hand, took a different stance, and it was this that served as a guide for the staff and individual members as well as the church’s policy.
It is the individual’s right to maintain his or her point of view, and even to teach it (though it is not appropriate to beat a dead horse), but the viewpoint of the church would be distinguishable.
I do not feel it is prudent to make the issue of Jesus’s images a foundation of the faith or to allow it to cause division within the church of Christ, as some have suggested.

First and foremost, no human has ever witnessed the image of God (except in the form of the God-man, Jesus Christ).

The result is that when we create an image of God, we are attempting to create God in our image rather than recognizing that God is the one who has created us in his image in the first place!

In addition to stating that we are not to construct pictures of God, the Bible also states that we are forbidden to worship images that God has made.
“For the wrath of God has been revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness on the part of men, who by their wickedness suppress the truth,” says the apostle Paul.
20Because his intangible properties, namely, his everlasting power and divine essence, have been clearly discernible in the things that have been created from the beginning of the universe, since the beginning of time.

In conclusion, the Bible essentially states that humans should not be concerned with creating or worshipping pictures since doing so will always result in some type of idolatry on their part.
In truth, as we desire to be in the presence of the unseen God through the Spirit, God will transform us into the likeness of his Son, Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is the visible representation of the invisible God, and as you develop in Christ, God will convert you into Jesus’ likeness as follows: “At this point, the Lord is the Spirit, and freedom may be found wherever the Spirit of the Lord is.
As a result, this is from the Lord, who is the Holy Spirit.” Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 that “He is the image of the unseen God, the firstborn of all creation,” says the author of the poem.

Is it okay to have pictures of Jesus?

Should a Christian Own Pictures and Statues of Jesus (Exodus 20:4)?

They’d never forget the look on His face.

Consider the preachers of today, and how their likenesses may be seen all over the place in literature.

Without a doubt, there were several artistically gifted individuals who might have sketched His likeness – yet none exists.

What about representations of the infant Jesus in the manger, such as those found in nativity scenes?

What they are thinking is,”Well, who would idolize a baby?” When it comes to Jesus, the Bible is unambiguous in its assertion that He was certainly worthy of all adoration, even while He was yet a baby in the flesh.

for we have seen his star in the east, and have come to worship him,” Matthew 2:1, 2, and 11 tell us.

What if they had a mental image of me as someone with long hair and tattoos?

They would be visualizing someone else, not the actual me, but a fictitious version of myself.

What do you suppose Jesus is thinking right now?

When they think of Him, they imagine a different man’s visage in their minds.

If you have images of Jesus, or any resemblance of Him (photos, engravings, etc.), whether as a man or as a child, it is prohibited to have them.

The Bible states in John 4:24 that “God is a Spirit, and those who worship him must worshiphim in spirit and in truth.” “For we walk by faith, not by sight,” the Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:7.
