What does John 5:19 mean?

‘Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can only do what he sees his Father doing, for everything the Father does, the Son likewise does,’ Jesus said in John 5:19, the New International Version. “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own own, but only what he sees the Father doing,” Jesus remarked to them in John 5:19, the English Standard Version. Because everything the Father does, the Son accomplishes in the same way as well. According to the King James Version, Jesus then replied to them, “I tell you the truth: the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do.” For whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise, as recorded in John 5:19.

He just acts in accordance with what he observes the Father doing.

“Truly I tell you, the Son is not able to accomplish anything on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing,” Jesus said in John 5:19, CSB.

John 8:28, “I do nothing of my own initiative.”

So Jesus responded, “When you hoist up the Son of Man, you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father has instructed Me,” according to the New International Version. (See also John 8:28.) Jesus’ statement in John 8:28, “I do nothing of myself,” is puzzling. Isn’t he God, and so entitled to do anything he wants? The fundamental teaching of Christian theology is that Jesus is both divine and human at the same time. In other words, Jesus possesses two distinct personalities: those of God and those of man.

After laying the groundwork, it becomes clear why Jesus would claim that he was powerless to act on his own initiative. It wasn’t that he lacked the motivation or drive to accomplish his goals. The point here is that Jesus had come to execute the will of the father, and he was entirely subordinate to the father in every way. As a result, he was unable to take any action on his own initiative while in total submission. This does not rule out the possibility that Jesus is divine. It implies that Jesus, who possessed two natures, one of which was human, deliberately submitted himself to the law in the capacity of a man and acted entirely within the confines of a man’s necessities.

5:19 No matter how hard he tries, the Son is powerless to save himself – this is not his flaw, but rather his splendor, which comes from his everlasting, intimate, and irrevocable union with the Father. As a result, it is completely impossible for the Son to judge, will, witness, or teach anything without the Father’s consent, as stated in John 5:30|,c; John 6:38; John 7:16; or for him to be known or believed in without the Father’s consent. And he defends his doing good every day, without interruption, by citing the example of his Father, from which he is unable to depart: these things doth the Son also – all of these, and only these; because he and the Father are one in essence.

Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life”

“I am the way, the truth, and the life,” Jesus says. “There is no other way to the Father but through me” (John 14:6). Christians are frequently chastised for stating that Jesus is the only way to reach God via faith. Because there are billions of non-Christians in the globe, this isn’t surprising. Is it really true that we are so narrow-minded and bigoted that we believe these individuals would be denied entry into paradise just because they were born in the wrong nation or were taught the wrong religion?

I don’t understand how this differs from other forms of spiritual racism.
5 Those who object to such proposals have a valid argument.
One individual cannot have a monopoly on truth or proclaim his “way” to be the sole road to God, because neither of these things are possible.
There is only one God, and he took on the form of a man in the person of Jesus Christ to reveal himself to us.

What did Jesus mean when He said, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30)?

QuestionAnswer According to the Gospel of John, Jesus presents Himself as the Good Shepherd and declares, during a debate with the Jewish leaders, that “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30). It was a bold statement—one that His audience thought was quite audacious—and it revealed a great deal about Jesus’ character. On the basis of this passage, it is possible to make five important observations. The first claim made by Jesus was that He was one with God in the sense of being on an equal footing with Him.

First and foremost, his audience recognized that Jesus was asserting his equality with God the Father.
Why?
When Jesus inquired as to why they intended to kill Him, they responded, “For blasphemy, because you, being a man, have declared yourself to be God” (John 10:33).
In fact, the only way Jesus’ words could not be considered blasphemy was if He was telling the truth about His equality with the Father.
To demonstrate that the Messiah has the authority to claim the title “Son of God,” he quoted Psalm 82:6.
In this declaration, Jesus asserted his preexistence in the presence of the Father.
The fifth point to note is that Jesus only stated that the Jews did not believe Him; He never stated that they misunderstood His claim to be God.
They had a perfect understanding of what He had said.

According to Colossians 1:16–17, Jesus’ same teaching is affirmed: “In him were created all things, both visible and invisible, in heaven and on earth, thrones, powers, rulers, and authorities; all things have been created through and for him.” “He is the beginning and the end of all things, and in him all things are held together.” John 1:1 explicitly states that Jesus was both with God in the beginning and wasGod at the time of his creation.

Summary: Jesus claimed to be one with the Father as part of a larger argument to demonstrate that He had existed from eternity past, lived in perfect oneness with the Father, possessed the same power as God, and was sent by the authority of God the Father to the nations.

Why Does Jesus Say He Is The Only Way To The Father?

Today, it is considered politically wrong to assert that Jesus Christ is the only path to the Father; thus, what do you say to those who do not believe this is the case?

The Way

“I am the way, the truth, and the life,” Jesus declared. “No one comes to the Father except through me,” says Jesus in John 14:6, but how does one get there? And what exactly is the truth and the life that Jesus was referring to? The early church was frequently referred to be “the way,” implying that it followed the teachings of Jesus, who declared Himself to be the way, the truth, and the life. Obviously, Jesus was referring to the fact that we can only reach the Father in heaven via trust in Him, and that “the life” is eternal for everyone who believe in Him (John 3:16).

Take note of the fact that “the Way” is capitalized.

The Truth

Jesus always said just what the Father wanted him to say, and because God cannot lie, anything the Father says through Christ is always true. Not just “a” truth, but “the” truth, as the saying goes. In the same way that Jesus is not one of several options, He is the one and only option. Although it is not politically acceptable to say something in public, it is true because Jesus said it, and He is the truth, and therefore it is correct. When Jesus spoke of the Word of God, he stated, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth” (John 17:17), which means that God’s Word is true, but also that the Word has the ability to sanctify those who hear it (and us).

In Ephesians 5:25-26, Paul instructs husbands to “love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word.” This cleansing by water that the Word performs on us individually and collectively as the church is in order “to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain, wrinkle, or any other blemish, but holy and blameless” (Eph 5:27).

The longest book in the Bible (Psalm 119) is entirely devoted to the Law of God, also known as the Word of God, indicating that God desires us to place a high importance on His Word.

Be a matter of fact, Jesus is often referred to as the Word of God (John 1).

The Life

One of my all-time favorite memory passages is John 11:25-26, since these are the verses that, in my opinion, illustrate what He meant when He said He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). In response to Martha’s sadness following the death of her brother Lazarushad four days earlier, Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life.” Anyone who believes in me will live even if he or she dies, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die, according to the Bible. According to John 11:25-26, Jesus is the source of eternal life for everyone who believe (John 3:16), and death will not separate them from the Lord when they die.

Actually, the instant God brought someone to repentance and trust in Christ was the very beginning of their everlasting existence.
Jesus is not referring to a physical body in this context.
According to the writings of the Apostle John, Jesus was associated with “life,” saying, “In him was life, and the life was the light of humanity” (John 1:4).
There is a decision to be made by every person, according to Jesus: “Whoever believes in the Son has everlasting life; whoever does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God will stay on him” (John 3:36).
When something is destroyed, it does not always imply that it has ceased to exist.
Running over a brick that was buried in the long grass nearly destroyed it, yet it still lives despite the fact that it was nearly destroyed.
The difference between the two lives is that one is eternal life in the presence of God, while the other is the lack of God’s presence, despite the fact that God is literally everywhere.

Conclusion

Christians must not stray from their conviction that Jesus is the only way to enter the kingdom of heaven. Just be thankful that there is a way, and if someone criticizes you for your “narrow-minded thinking,” tell them, “At the very least, there is “a” way.” Furthermore, this is not my opinion; rather, it is straight from Jesus’ mouth. It is possible that you do not believe in Jesus if you do not think that He is the only Way.” We can be saved only through Jesus Christ, and there is no other name that has been given to us by which we may be saved (Acts 4:12; 16:30).

In our last reading, we saw one of these three key things, which was the healing of this man at Bethesda, as well as Jesus’ assertion that the aim of the healing was not to appease sign-seekers, but rather to bring about the conquest of sin.

1) A Healing to Conquer Sin

As a result, in verses 8–9, “Jesus told him to get up, take up his bed, and walk.” And the guy was instantly restored to health, and he sprang from his bed and began walking.” When the authorities interrogate him about carrying his bed on the Sabbath, the guy doesn’t even know who cured him since Jesus leaves so swiftly to avoid drawing too much attention to himself and his healing miracle. “Now the guy who had been healed did not recognize who it was since Jesus had gone because there was a large gathering in the location,” says verse 13.

It is revealed in verse 14: “Afterward, Jesus discovered him in the temple and said to him, ‘See, you are well!'” Do not sin any longer, so that nothing worse will happen to you.'” In other words, I’ve sought you out in order to explain the significance of what I did to you.

I overcame your illness with the goal of overthrowing your sin in the future.

Jesus’ Miracles: Not an End in Themselves

None of Jesus’ bodily miracles served as a goal in and of itself. Everything about him, about the kingdom of God, and about the spiritual and moral reforms that he is bringing about is revealed more fully in these passages. Jesus’ goal in feeding the five thousand people with a few loaves and fish was to demonstrate that he alone is the actual food from heaven (Luke 6:35). He had to tell the audience in John 6:26, “Truly, truly, I say to you,” he had to tell them, “You are seeking me, not because you witnessed signs, but because you ate your full of the loaves and fish” (John 6:26).

As a result, in John 5, he is admonishing the cured man, saying, “Don’t miss what your healing was a sign of.” It was all about your holiness that you received healing.
So seek to me for guidance and repent of your wrongdoing.
And we’ll go back to it at the end of the book.
To begin, let us examine each of these in turn, noting how they are interconnected and how they relate to the healing and its goal in the man’s holiness.

2) Jesus’ Relationship to the Father

There is a recurring motif in this verse regarding Jesus’ relationship with God the Father. Because Jesus had cured this man on a Sabbath, the Jews were harassing him, according to verse 16: “And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was performing these things on the Sabbath.” As a result, in verse 17, Jesus provides an explanation: “But Jesus replied them, ‘My Father is working until now, and I am working.'” For the time being, let aside the debate about the Sabbath and concentrate solely on Jesus’ relationship with the Almighty.

This is exactly what the Jews did, and it raised their persecution to the level of a murderous plot.

This was the reason why the Jews were attempting to murder him even more aggressively, since not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was also referring to God as his own Father, thereby elevating himself to the status of God.

Jesus Let It Stand

What is critical to understand here is not why they came to that conclusion, but rather that Jesus did nothing to change their minds. They were in attendance. We weren’t like that. They were able to see and hear the way Jesus spoke of God as his Father in his speech. In fact, it appears that there were sufficient indicators, both in what he said and in the manner in which he delivered it, that they concluded, “This is ridiculous.” In the way he speaks about God, this individual is truly behaving himself as if he is on an equal footing with God.

Specifically, he claims that 1) the Son does not—indeed, the Son is unable to—go his own way but must remain in perfect step with the Father; and 2) the Father does not go his own way but must act in perfect step with the Son.

Take each one of them one at a time.

Jesus Does Only What the Father Does

First and foremost, the Son does just what the Father does. They are in perfect harmony with one another. Verse 19 and 20: And Jesus told them: “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing on his own initiative, but only what he sees the Father doing.’ ” Because everything the Father does, the Son accomplishes in the same way as well. Because the Father loves the Son, he demonstrates to him all that he himself is doing.” One of the most essential statements in those verses is found in the second part of verse 19, which reads: “Whatever the Father does, that the Son also accomplishes.” As opposed to saying: Jesus picks certain things to do that he sees the Father doing and then promptly does what the Father is doing.

When the Father takes action, Jesus takes action.

And they came to the correct conclusion: you act as though you’re on an equal footing with him.

The Father Acts in Step with Jesus

Second, it seems in verse 22 that the Father is acting in sync with the Son, indicating that the Father is acting in sync with the Son. “The Father does not judge anyone, but has delegated all judgment to the Son,” says verse 22. After reading this, you shouldn’t dismiss all you’ve just read in verse 19 as if it were suddenly no longer true. Instead, consider the following: “The Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing,” according to verse 19 of the Bible. In other words, when the Bible states in verse 22, “The Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,” it cannot suggest that the Son is blind to the Father’s judgment yet goes ahead and judges nevertheless.

That is to say, God does pass judgment.
He doesn’t pass judgment on anyone like that.
In verse 23, Jesus says, “Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.” This is the meaning of the passage.
It follows that if people honor him for who he truly is, God the Father will also be revered for who he truly is.
What people think of him ultimately determines their final verdict.
As a result, it appears to me that the section of verse 22 that says “The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son” is a contradiction.

that the Father is not only in perfect harmony with the Son’s judgment, but also in perfect harmony with the Son’s judgment because anyone who does not honor his Son is also unworthy of being honored by his Father

Two Implications

When I mentioned that the Son keeps perfect time with the Father and that the Father acts in perfect time with the Son, I was referring to two implications that we should take into consideration. We just happened to see one of them. It comes as a shock to the system in the twenty-first century, a society overflowing with plurality, with religions and worldviews and cultures and lifestyles all contending for our loyalty. Verse 23 says, “Whoever refuses to acknowledge his Son does not acknowledge his Father who sent him.” Instead, if you want to know if someone from another religion, or no religious affiliation at all, honors God (has a true worshipful relationship with God), the test you use to determine this is: Do they honor Jesus for who he truly is—as the divine Son of God, the Messiah, the crucified and risen Savior of the world, the Lord of the universe, and Judge of all human beings?

If they don’t, they aren’t honoring God’s commandments.

He is not brought before the court of law, but has passed from death to life.” It is astonishing what may happen when we hear the message of Jesus as delivered in the Gospel of John in its whole, rather than just some twisted portion of it, and if, as a result of that message and that person, we learn to believe God as the one who sent him for our redemption, two things happen.

Jesus has taken on the role of that judgment for us.
Likewise, his curse on the cross becomes our curse on the cross and his resurrection becomes our resurrection.
This is incredible news that can’t be expressed adequately.
As a believer, you should be aware of the following.
As a result, the first major concern in this text is the man’s recovery, with the ultimate goal of leading him to holiness.

3) The Issue of the Sabbath

There is still one major topic to address in the text, and that is the question of the Sabbath. Now, based on what we have learned about Jesus’ relationship with the Father, we have a framework upon which to understand Jesus’ response to their criticism. Recall that in verse 16, it states, “And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was performing these things—specifically, curing people on Fridays and Saturdays,” which refers to the Sabbath. What is Jesus’ reasoning for this?

I overcame sickness to demonstrate to you that I am determined to overcame sin.

As of yet, he has provided an explanation to the Jewish leaders who have expressed concern about the fact that this occurred on a Sabbath. In verse 17, he states, “My Father has been working till now, and I am working as well.”

What Is Jesus Saying?

What exactly is he saying? Something along these lines comes to mind. My Father and I made a flawless world, a paradise, and then we rested, not because we were exhausted, but rather because we wanted to take in the magnificent exhibition of our own glory that was shown in our creative craftsmanship as a result of our labor of love. That is what the Sabbath is for: to be in a state of relaxed concentration while enjoying God. When sin entered the earth, it brought disease, tragedy, and death with it.

We have been working on restoring a Sabbath paradise to the cosmos in a variety of methods that you are not aware of at this time.

Even your own law, which contains the Sabbath command, was a part of our efforts to defeat sin and keep the miseries of unrighteousness at bay, as well as to point you in the direction of a Messiah, a Savior, who would come and perform the decisive acts of restoration and transformation toward the new heavens and the new earth in the future.

What was taking place at the pool of Bethesda was that my Father and I were exposing the world that was about to be revealed.

“At this time, my Father is working, and I am also working.”

Repent and Rejoice

The depths of God’s wealth, wisdom, and understanding are beyond comprehension. “How impenetrable his judgements are, and how incomprehensible his methods!” (See Romans 11:33.) Whether you see it or not, the following is my answer to your claims that I violated the Sabbath: I and the Father are one and the same. We are the ones who created the world and the Sabbath. Since the beginning of time, when sin and disease entered the earth, my Father and I have been working together to restore Sabbath joy, healing, and rest to the world.

At the cross, I shall provide the definitive triumph for the Christian faith.

And there will be no disease or sin in that kingdom because there would be no separation between God and man.
