Joseph: A model of character, faith, and fatherhood

When it comes to Joseph, Jesus’ natural father, the Rev. Adam Hamilton argues, “We don’t hear a single word from him, and he only appears in 16 lines in the New Testament.” The influence of his work on our faith, on Christ, is significant. Fidelity: Christmas Through the Eyes of Joseph, written by Hamilton, pastor of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas is available for purchase online. During a taped chat for the United Methodist Communications’ Get Your Spirit in Shape campaign, Hamilton says, “His is a wonderful and compelling narrative.” “We often jump immediately to Mary and the Christ child, but we overlook this guy who most certainly sculpted and developed much of Jesus’ self-understanding, his knowledge of God, and his perception of what God is like.”

What we know

This crucial individual in Jesus’ early life is only vaguely mentioned in the Bible, which is unfortunate. Matthew informs us that Joseph’s father’s name was Jacob (1:16), a detail that the gospel writer may have included to call to mind another Joseph, the dream-interpreting son of Jacob who we read about in Genesis. Matthew also tells us that Joseph’s father’s name was Jacob (1:16). Mary’s betrothed, Joseph, was used by God to save the people of Israel during a famine (see Genesis 37-50), and Joseph was used by God to father the one who will save us all.

  1. “It’s likely that carpenters weren’t constructing houses,” Hamilton adds.
  2. As a result, it is possible that Joseph created yokes for oxen, household and farming implements, doors for dwellings, and other furnishings.
  3. The abilities of the craft have likely been passed down from father to son for generations in his family.
  4. Meanwhile, Hamilton says, “he embodies some of the finest aspirations in human history.”

Character

When Mary notifies Joseph that she would be giving birth to a son, Joseph is faced with a difficult dilemma. “According to Hamilton’s interpretation of the tale, “this is not good news for him at this point.” He’s dissatisfied, wounded, and enraged at the moment.” Joseph, on the other hand, makes the decision not to act on his feelings. Joseph and Mary were called to journey along roads that they would not have chosen for themselves if they had the opportunity. CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 license granted to this photograph by Fr.

“Hamilton says, “even as he’s stewing on this, he has empathetic empathy for her and is trying to figure out a way to break off the engagement and accept the responsibility himself.” ” His choice to “quietly put off their engagement” (Matthew 1:19 CEB) is an act of self-sacrifice motivated by love for his wife.

After that, Joseph had a dream, just like his ancestor, Joseph. An angel advises him to marry Mary and to raise the child as his own, and he follows the instructions. “When Joseph awoke,” the Bible tells us, “he performed exactly what an angel from God had instructed him to do” (Matthew 1:24 CEB).

Faith

When Mary notifies Joseph that she would be giving birth to a son, Joseph is faced with a difficult choice. “”This is not good news for him at this point in the tale,” Hamilton explains. The man is dissatisfied, wounded, and perhaps angry with himself.” Although he is filled with emotion, Joseph decides not to act on it. Despite their best efforts, Joseph and Mary were compelled to journey down roads they would not have chosen on their own. CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 license granted to this photograph by Fr.

“Hamilton says, “even when he’s stewing over it, he feels empathetic empathy for her and attempts to figure out a way to break off the engagement and shoulder the responsibility himself.” ” It is an act of selfless love that he makes the decision to “break off their engagement discreetly” (Matthew 1:19 CEB).

He is instructed by an angel to marry Mary and raise the child as his own.

Fatherhood

However, while the Bible does not provide specifics regarding Joseph’s relationship with Jesus, it is reasonable to assume that Joseph had a significant impact on him. Our fathers, whether they are wonderful or imperfect, play an important role in shaping who we become. Joseph exemplifies some of the finest characteristics of character, parenting, grace, love, mercy, and faith that can be found elsewhere. The photograph was taken by Kathryn Price for United Methodist Communications. As Adam Hamilton explores in Faithful, he considers how Joseph’s character may have influenced Jesus.

“Had Jesus witnessed this sort of love and forgiveness by Joseph?,” Jesus questions at the end of the story.

(Faithful30-31).

“Not every guy is a parent,” Hamilton continues, “but every man has the capacity to have an impact on the lives of others.”

Look what God can do

Joseph is frequently relegated to a supporting position in our recounting of the Christmas narrative. The silent, humble man standing at the manger in our nativity scenes is a non-speaking figure. Nonetheless, his contribution is substantial. We see some of the highest ideals of character, fatherhood, grace, love, mercy, and faith in Joseph. “It’s a beautiful story that happens exactly the right way,” Hamilton says, “but it was hard to see that at the time.

I think that’s true in our lives. We take journeys we don’t want to take, and then we look back and say, ‘Wow! Look how God used that! Look what God did in the journey!'” You may reach him through email or by phone at 615-312-3733.
