I believe in the potential of our young.I have faith in their goodness and decent character.I have faith in their character.Many thousands of them have been interviewed on a personal and individual basis by me.Yes, there are some who have fallen prey to wickedness, but they are a small percentage in comparison.

Years ago, I had the opportunity to travel to South Vietnam.I spoke with two or three hundred soldiers one-on-one, men who had waded through the blood and heat of war, but men who were also men of integrity in their personal and professional life.The one I recall was a youngster who had just returned from the Rock Pile in the Demilitarized Zone, and he responded to a question about morality by saying, ″Not on my life—I couldn’t do it.″ ″I want to one day be worthy of a wonderful girl,″ I say.

Service of Missionaries

I believe in the sense of service that our employees have.I’ve spent time in the Church’s missions, where we have around 49 thousand missionaries working for the cause of Christ.They are there at their own expense as well as at the expense of their family members’ expenses.They devote between one and a half and two years of their lives to the Lord.Their days are long and difficult, and their weeks are crammed with activities.

I have faith in something else that serves as a yardstick for their goodness.Paul forewarned that men will be unthankful, unholy, disobedient to their parents, and devoid of natural affection in the end days (see 2 Tim.3:1–3; 2 Pet.3:1–3).It is not necessary to look far in our own day to observe that prophesy being fulfilled in the homes of the people.

In spite of this, I have observed widespread rejection of it on the part of the general public.At our young missionaries’ meetings, I’ve seen hundreds of our young men and women get to their feet and share their thoughts and sentiments.Almost without exception, kids express their gratitude and thanks to their parents in their words.When young men and women of nineteen, twenty, twenty-one, and twenty-two years of age stand before one another and, in the quiet confidences of such a gathering, express their appreciation for their father, it is a very pleasant thing to hear.″I’m quite close to my mother.″ They are not mushy; rather, they are macho, athletic, and capable young men and womanly females who are endowed with beauty and intelligence.Their statements are genuine and heartfelt.

In South America, I met a woman who had recently become a member of the Church.She had gone about informing people about what she had discovered, fueled by a deep affection for what she had discovered.Since her baptism, she had recommended more than three hundred friends to the missionaries so that they may teach the gospel to them in the seven months that had elapsed between her baptism and now.At one time, there were sixty people in the church.It was more than probable that they came in.In So Paulo, Brazil, I had the opportunity to meet the young missionary who had been the first to teach her the gospel.
