” Oh Happy Day “(1968) “All God’s Children Got Soul”(1969)

A 1967 gospel music adaptation of the 1755 hymn by clergyman Philip Doddridge, ” Oh Happy Day ” is a favorite of many people. It was recorded by theEdwin Hawkins Singers and became a worldwide success in 1969, peaking at No. 4 on the US Singles Chart, No. 1 in France, Germany, and the Netherlands, and No. 2 on the Canadian Singles Chart, UK Singles Chart, and Irish Singles Chart, among other countries and regions. Since then, it has been a staple of gospel music. Initially, a muted piano, drums, and bass accompany lead singerDorothy Combs Morrison on the left-hand stereo channel.

The music is remarkable for its crystal-clear sound, which is especially impressive considering the track’s loud voices and the inexpensive equipment utilized to record them.

Origins

The hymn “Oh, Happy Day,” arranged in the gospel style by Edwin Hawkins, has a long history of popularity. A hymn composed in the mid-18th century (“O joyful day, that established my decision”) by English priest Philip Doddridge (based on Acts 8:35) and set to a 1704 tune byJ. A. Freylinghausen, the song had its start as a choral piece. A new melody, as well as a chorus, was added by Edward F. Rimbault in the mid-19th century, and it became widely used at baptismal and confirmation rituals in the United Kingdom, as well as in America.

A new arrangement of Charles Wesley’s 1740 song ” Jesus, Lover of My Soul” appeared on the B-side of the single, which was composed by Hawkins himself.

Recording

To give the hymn a more gospel feel, Hawkins changed the arrangement. He also included a piano introduction that he claims was inspired by the music of Sérgio Mendes, a Brazilian composer. While recording the song in 1967, lead vocalist Dorothy Morrison incorporated some lyrical improvisations inspired by James Brown, which she claimed “made the song sound even more current.”

Legacy and influence

A “standard” in no time, Hawkins’ arrangement has been recorded by hundreds of musicians and is still in use today. It was listed on theRIAA’s Songs of the Century list, and Hawkins was awarded a Grammy for Best Soul Gospel Performance in 1970 for his performance (performed by the Edwin Hawkins Singers). Parts of the song “Oh Happy Day” are used in live performances and acoustic versions of Nick Cave’s song ” Deanna ” (1988), showing that Cave was inspired by the song. In his 1970 international smash single “My Sweet Lord,” George Harrison noted that the song served as a significant source of inspiration.

Big Momma’s House, Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, David LaChapelle’s 2005 filmRize, Robin Williams’ 2007 movieLicense to Wed, the 2010 biographical film Secretariat (in which the song is played when Secretariat wins the Belmont), and Spike Lee’sBlacKkKlansman are all films in which the song appears.

Spiritualized, a space-rock band from the United Kingdom, performs this song often as the concluding song of their live shows.

Black History Tribute to Edwin Hawkins, Popularizer of “Oh Happy Day”

Edwin Hawkins was an American author and poet who lived during the early twentieth century. 19th of August, 1943 – 15th of January, 2018 ‘Oh Happy Day,’ a contemporary gospel song written by African-Americans. In the words of Arr. Edwin Hawkins, “O Happy Day That Fixed My Choice,” Hymn;UMH, No. 391 By the Reverend Dr. Philip Doddridge ‘Oh Happy Day,’ a contemporized hymn refrain, is widely regarded as one of the most popular and influential current African-American gospel songs of its generation.

‘O Happy Day That Fixed My Choice’ is an English hymn text written by Rev.

According to religious researcher Françoise Deconinck-Brossard, this song, which appears in posthumous reprints of Doddridge’s hymnody—the first of which was published in 1755—expresses the benchmark goals of British nonconformity, including the following: “A personal conversion experience, as well as Puritan Covenant theology,” says the author.

  • In his teachings, I learned how to observe and pray, as well as how to live each day with joy; Joyful day, happy day, when Jesus wiped my sins away!
  • Rimbault (1816-76).
  • By the end of the twentieth century, the African-American Gospel arrangement of “Oh Happy Day” had attained widespread popularity, earning Edwin Hawkins the title of “Father of Contemporary Gospel” in the process.
  • Hawkins was up in the Church of God in Christ, which is the biggest African-American Pentecostal denomination in the country.
  • This church would go on to employ Hawkins as its Minister of Music, succeeding Ola Jean Andrews, a gospel music arranger and choir conductor, as the church’s first Minister of Music (b.1929).
  • Edwin’s pioneering efforts led to the establishment of the Edwin Hawkins Music and Arts Seminar in 1982.
  • Edwin Hawkins was dubbed the “father of contemporary gospel” after the popularity of his Gospel arrangement, ‘Oh Happy Day,’ which was released in 1957.

When attempting to figure out why Edwin Hawkins picked this specific song, one is left to his or her own conjecture.

Pentecostalism is a distinct Evangelical movement that is also sustained by revival (Azusa Street, 1906).

A personal, life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ is one of the outcomes of this salvation, among other things.

(Matthew 26:41).

Ramsey Lewis’ album, With One Voice, has one of the most significant versions of Hawkins’ pick, which is perhaps one of the most significant arrangements ever recorded (2005).

Story Behind the Song: “Oh Happy Day”

LaTonya Taylor contributed to this article. “Oh, what a beautiful day it was when Jesus wiped away my sins.” “It’s incredible that God would take a basic little song like that and do what he’s done with it,” says Edwin Hawkins, the man behind one of gospel music’s most well-known singles, “It’s Amazing How God Would Take a Simple Little Song Like That.” While listening to the famed Philadelphia-based gospel quartet The Davis Sisters, Hawkins became acquainted with the old-time Baptist song for the first time as a youngster.

  1. The song was later redone and taught to the Northern California State Youth Choir, a community choir of teenagers and young adults that he created with his friend Betty Watson.
  2. On a two-track machine at Berkeley’s Ephesian Church of God in Christ, they recorded Let Us Go Into the House of the Lord with the intention of selling 500 copies of the bespoke LP at community concerts.
  3. “Oh Happy Day was definitely not our favorite song to sing,” Hawkins admits, a slight chuckle in his voice.
  4. Within a few weeks, the record was being played on radio stations across the country, and more than 900,000 copies of the single had been sold by that point.
  5. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop songs list in the United States.
  6. The song, which included a slowly rolling soul beat, gentle Latin percussion, lush lead vocals by Dorothy Morrison, and a soaring, full-bodied chorus, altered the sound of gospel music, paving the way for the subsequent contemporary movement.
  7. When the band performed in mainstream venues, a group of pastors in the area petitioned to have it removed from rock radio, and many Christians denounced the group for doing so.
  8. “Those who do not know Jesus are the ones to whom we should sing and teach them about Jesus Christ,” says the author.
  9. He commemorated the song’s 30th anniversary by releasing an album that included a dance remix of the Grammy-winning classic.

1 O happy day that fixed my choice On Thee, my Savior and my God! Well may this glowing heart rejoice, And tell its raptures all abroad.
Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away! He taught me how to watch and pray, And live rejoicing every day; Happy day, happy day,When Jesus washed my sins away!
2 ’Tis done—the great transaction’s done; I am my Lord’s, and He is mine; He drew me and I followed on, Rejoiced to own the call divine.
Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away! He taught me how to watch and pray, And live rejoicing every day; Happy day, happy day,When Jesus washed my sins away!
3 Now rest, my long-divided heart, Fixed on this blissful center, rest; Here have I found a nobler part, Here heav’nly pleasures fill my breast.
Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away! He taught me how to watch and pray, And live rejoicing every day; Happy day, happy day,When Jesus washed my sins away!
4 High heav’n that hears the solemn vow, That vow renewed shall daily hear! Till in life’s latest hour I bow, And bless, in death, a bond so dear.
Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away! He taught me how to watch and pray, And live rejoicing every day; Happy day, happy day,When Jesus washed my sins away!
