Our Great Savior

The first line of the hymn, “Jesus! What a friend for sinners,” is probably a reference to Luke 7:34-35 – “The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and yousay, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by all her children” (ESV) (ESV). While the Pharisees meant to scoff and accuse, the next story in Luke’s gospel illustrates how Jesus really is a “friend of sinners” – a “sinful woman” anointed Jesus’ feet and her sins were forgiven (Luke 7:36-50).

Jesus said of her, “Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much.” (Luke 7:47 ESV)

J. Wilbur Chapman is the author of this piece of written work. According to Richard Stanislaw and Donald Hustad, it was written in 1910 for the tune HYFRYDOL, and it was originally published with the tune in Alexander’s Gospel Songs, No. 2 in the same year that it was composed (Companion to The Worshiping Church,p. 137). Each stanza has its own refrain, and the overall structure of the poem is highly logical. Every stanza of this hymn is devoted to one characteristic of Jesus: His love, strength, consolation, and direction.

With the final verse, the singer declares his allegiance to Christ, and the refrain is an expression of adoration.

Some commentators have noted the parallels between this hymn and Charles Wesley’s “Jesus, Lover of My Soul,” which has citations in the second lines of Chapman’s opening (“Jesus! Lover of my soul”) and fourth stanzas (“While the tempest still is high”) stanzas (“While the tempest still is high”).

Hear Jesus’ compassionate affection for us in this song, which is a wonderful reminder of his tenderness towards us. Indescribable privilege, friendship with God is something that was not always available to all of God’s people during their earthly lives. Taking the perspective of the Psalmist (Psalm 8), we might marvel at the fact that God cares about us at all, much alone that He calls us His friends: “What is man that You are concerned about him, and what is man’s son that You are concerned about him?

When faced with an attack, temptation, sadness, or hardship, there is no better place to flee than into the loving arms of our heavenly Father, who is always there for us.

We pray that Jesus’ companionship will bring us comfort!

It was initially composed as a poem by preacher Joseph M. Scriven in 1855 to console his mother, who was living in Ireland at the time while he was in Canada. It is now considered a Christian hymn and is sung by millions of people worldwide. Scriven first published the poem anonymously, and it was only in the 1880s that he was given full credit for it. The hymn’s music was created by Charles Crozat Converse in 1868, and it is still in use today. There are several variations of the hymn, each with a different set of lyrics in a variety of languages.
