Who Wrote Jesus, Hold My Hand

Jesus, Hold My Hand – Albert Edward Brumley

When he was 28 years old in the 1930s, this native Oklahoman wrote about a voyage that was still in its early stages for himself, but one for which he sought assistance since he anticipated it would be a trip that would be full of hardships. With “Jesus, Hold My Hand,” Albert Brumley had seen enough to warrant a stop in his writing. He should have taken that opportunity to reflect on his experiences. Looking back as he reached the end of his life some forty years later, Brumley would very certainly have concluded that the request he made with the title of his song had been fulfilled.

Simply considering the historical context in which Albert Brumley lived, as well as the facts we know about his life, one may get a sense of the circumstances that likely influenced his mind and soul in 1933, when he composed the lyrics to “Jesus, Hold My Hand.” Despite the fact that his parents were sharecroppers (who grew cotton), he grew up with a lot of musical inspiration from them, as well as an understanding for the rigors of farm life, which he inherited from his father.

As was to be expected, he had little or no money when he left his Oklahoma home for colleges in Arkansas and Missouri, particularly when he first arrived.

Besides his mother, another important figure in Albert’s life was the woman, Goldie Schell, with whom he would marry in 1931 when he was 26 years old.

  • They say she was mostly responsible for keeping her chaotic, quirky husband on track, as he was known to scrawl musical suggestions to himself on scraps of paper or whatever else was available at the time.
  • They had no effect on his prolific output, which totaled over 800 hymns throughout his lifetime.
  • “Sinking sand,” “the opponent,” “hear my pitiful plea,” “guard me,” and other phrases from Albert Brumley ring true as warnings from a man who had been avoiding problems, regardless of the pleasant sensations we could get from reading about him in biographical studies.
  • Specifically, was there a specific incident, or was Albert asking for His aid in the larger context of the rest of his life?

This once-poverty sharecropper had numerous songs published in various languages at the end of his life, had formed his own publishing firm (which one of his sons currently runs), and had been inducted into three different Halls of Fame (Nashville Songwriters, Gospel Music, and Oklahoma Music Halls of Fame).

What do you think your response would have been? What is your response now that you have taken a step back? A biography of the composer was collected from the book “Our Garden of Song,” compiled by Gene C. Finley and published by Howard Publishing Company in 1980, which was published in English.

Jesus, Hold My Hand

“JESUS, PLEASE TAKE MY HAND.” “For I, the Lord thy God, will grasp thy right hand.I will assist thee,” says the Lord. (See also Isa. 41:13.) INTRO.: “Jesus, Hold My Hand” is a song in which we implore the Lord to hold our hands so that He may assist us ( 679 inHymns for Worship Revised,147 inSacred Selections for the Church). Albert Edward Brumley was the author of the text and the composer of the music for this piece (1905-1977). Brumley is likely best known for the song “I’ll Fly Away,” which was one of his very first recordings.

  • The first stanza of I.

If there is a Friend who walks with me, who leads me safely through the sinking sand, it is the Christ of Calvary; This would be my prayer, dear Lord, each dayTo help me do the best I can,For I need Thy light to guide me day and night,This would be my prayer, dear Lord, each dayTo help me do the best I can; Hold my hand, Jesus, you are blessed.

  • For Christians, this planet is a pilgrimage destination: 1 Peter 2:11B.
  • 15:13-14C (Cross Reference) We can ask for God’s assistance when we are in need through Him: (Hebrews 4:14-16) Secondly, stanza 2 speaks about heavenly illumination.
  • In order for me to perceive the fortunate route; As I journey forth and face the adversary on a daily basis, Blessed Jesus, hold my hand and guide me.
  • We must journey or walk in the light, according to 1 John 1:7B.
  • Rev.
  • In order to tread this route successfully, we must be warriors who are courageous and true: 2 Timothy 2:3-4III.
  • When I am walking across the valley, the light is faint.

In the event that I be awarded the crown of life;I have placed my trust in Thee, my Lord, in order to reach the golden strand; There is no other friend on whom I can rely;Blessed Jesus, please take my hand.

The “valley dull” is most likely the same as the “valley of the shadow of death,” which is as follows: Isaiah 23:4B.

2:10C, at the end of this valley will be a crown of life for those who are loyal.

22:1-2FINAL DISCUSSION: The chorus continues to implore Jesus to take our hands in his own.

We ate, visited, and then sang for quite a long time.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with or unscriptural with the lyrics or concept expressed in this song, in my opinion.

It should be my intention to say, “Jesus, hold my hand,” at all times throughout my life.

JESUS HOLD MY HAND

“For I am the LORD, your God, and I will take hold of your right hand and say to you, “Do not be afraid; I will assist you.”” Isaiah 41:13 is a Bible verse. Each of us has undoubtedly encountered a number of circumstances in which we required someone to provide a helping hand. For example, it may have been climbing over an obstacle or walking on slick surfaces, or it could have been staying on our feet while traversing unknown territory. As children, we may have need the assistance of an adult to direct us safely across a busy street or to safeguard us in a crowded situation.

  1. That supportive hand may be a source of comfort, a guide, or a sense of security.
  2. We all require assistance from time to time while dealing with the difficulties of life that come our way.
  3. In addition, he must have experienced the joy and security that comes from hanging on to the Lord’s hand during difficult moments in his own life.
  4. From the years of World War I through the years of the Great Depression, he had endured a variety of difficulties in his life.
  5. Upon graduation from high school in 1926, he enrolled in the Hartford Musical Institute in Hartford, Arkansas, where he remained until 1931.
  6. In 1931, Brumley tied the knot with Goldie Edith Schell.
  7. They say she was mostly responsible for keeping her chaotic, quirky husband on track, as he was known to scrawl musical suggestions to himself on scraps of paper or whatever else was available at the time.

“I’ll Fly Away,” “Turn Your Radio On,” “If We Never Meet Again (This Side of Heaven),” “I’ll Meet You In The Morning,” “Rank Strangers,” and “He Set Me Free” are just a few of the songs he penned during his time there.

Brumley had firsthand contact with the’sinking sand’ and ‘the opponent’ that he wrote about.

He gave Jesus the credit he deserved by portraying him as a friend and helper who accompanied him on his regular walks.

Because there is no other Friend on whom we may rely, Blessed Jesus, please take my hand in yours.

Then keep your grip on His hand.

The Christ of Calvary is the one who guides me securely across the sinking sand.

Please hold my hand, I need Thee every hour, (Blessed Jesus, hold my hand) (Yes, I need Thee every hour) Protect me as I go through this pilgrimage region with Thy might and mightiness.

If you will hear my weak cries, Lord, please look down on me.

Blessed Jesus, please take my hand in yours and guide me.

I will be a courageous and loyal soldier, and I will always firmly take a stance.

(By Thy rescuing strength, guide us through this land, this pilgrim land.) O Lord, please hear my pathetic cries and gaze down on me.

(Hear my pleading, my pitiful pleading, Lord, dear Lord, please hear me.) If you look down on me, I want to see you there, Blessed Jesus, please take my hand in yours while I pray. You may listen to it here. HAND

George Jones – Jesus, Hold My Hand Lyrics

“For I am the LORD, your God, and I will take hold of your right hand and say to you, “Do not be afraid; I will assist you.” 41:13 in the book of Isaiah There are various circumstances in which everyone of us has undoubtedly found ourselves in need of assistance. For example, it may have been climbing over an obstacle or walking on slick surfaces, or it could have been staying on our feet while traversing new territory. A helping hand to guide us across a busy street, or even to safeguard us from harm in a crowded place, may have been required when we were children It is common for us to require greater assistance as we grow older.

  • Nonetheless, we don’t always require assistance in physically demanding circumstances.
  • A comparable set of circumstances may have been encountered by Albert Brumley (1905 -1977).
  • From the years of World War I through the Great Depression, he had endured a variety of difficulties in his life.
  • Hartford, Arkansas’ Hartford Musical Institute, where he studied from 1926 to 1931, was the first place he went to further his musical education.
  • During the year 1931, Brumley tied the knot with Goldie Edith Schell.
  • The rumor has it that she played a significant role in keeping her disorganized and eccentric husband on track, as he was known to scrawl musical suggestions to himself on scraps of paper or whatever else was at hand.
  • “I’ll Fly Away,” “Turn Your Radio On,” “If We Never Meet Again (This Side of Heaven),” “I’ll Meet You In The Morning,” “Rank Strangers,” and “He Set Me Free” are just a few of the songs he composed during his years in the country.

“Sinking sand” and “the opponent,” as described by Brumley, were real experiences for him.

By portraying him as his buddy and helper who accompanied him on a daily basis, he gave Jesus the credit that he deserved.

Hold my hand, Blessed Jesus, for there is no other Friend on whom we may rely.

Hold on to His hand until He releases you from your prison.

It is the Christ of Calvary who leads me securely across the sinking sand.

Hold my hand, Jesus, I need Thee every hour, (Blessed Jesus, hold my hand) (Yes, I need Thee every hour) Protect me by Thy might as I go through this pilgrim country.

Observe me from above and hear my pathetic cries, O Lord.

When I bow in prayer, I want to meet you there.

2.Light up my path so that I may see the path that leads to life, and keep me so that I may be entirely Thine and sing redemption’s song someday.

As I go forth and encounter the adversary on a daily basis, Blessed Jesus, hold my hand and guide me forward.

The Lord’s rescuing might has brought me across this land, this pilgrim land.

If you will hear my weak cries, Lord, please look down on me.

Blessed Jesus, please take my hand in yours and lead me to the Father.

The Lord’s rescuing might has brought me across this land, this pilgrim land.

Take My Hand, Precious Lord – Wikipedia

” Take My Hand, Precious Lord ” (also known as ” Precious Lord, Take My Hand “) is a hymn from the Anglican tradition. The lyrics were written by Thomas A. Dorsey, who was also responsible for the adaptation of the tune.

Origin

The melody, which is claimed to Dorsey, was derived in large part from the 1844 hymn tune “Maitland.” Despite the fact that the tune “Maitland” is frequently attributed to American composer George N. Allen (1812–1877), the earliest known source (the Plymouth Collection, 1855) indicates that Allen was the author/adapter of the text “Must Jesus bear the cross alone,” not its composer; in fact, the tune itself was printed without attribution for many years after Allen’s death. Occasionally, the name “Maitland” is ascribed to The Oberlin Social and Sabbath School Hymn Book, which Allen edited, although this collection does not contain any musical compositions.

  1. Dorsey stated that he was inspired by Blind Connie Williamssing his rendition of this song with “Precious Lord,” which he heard on the radio and recorded.

  3. The Heavenly Gospel Singers recorded the first known recording on February 16, 1937, and it is still in existence today (BluebirdB6846).

Performances

The song was a favorite of Martin Luther King Jr.’s, and he frequently called gospel singer Mahalia Jackson to perform it at civil rights rallies to motivate and encourage the masses; at his request, she performed it at his burial in April 1968. He requested that it be played at a ceremony he was scheduled to attend later that night in his final remarks before being assassinated. At the state burial of PresidentLyndon B. Johnson in January 1973, opera singerLeontyne Prices sung the song, and Aretha Franklin sang it at Mahalia Jackson’s death in 1972.

Nina Simon sang it at the Westbury Music Fair on April 7, 1968, three days after Martin Luther King Jr.

That evening was dedicated to him, and it was recorded on the album’Nuff Said!

It was also sung by Beyoncé on February 8, 2015, during the 57th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. In January 2016, Dave Grohl sang the song’s lyrics during a memorial ceremony for his buddy, LemmyfromMotörhead, in which he was remembered.
