How Old Was The Earth When Jesus Was Born

The Bible Says the Earth is Young

What the Bible teaches regarding the age of the Earth should be taken seriously by every earnest and honest learner who wishes to learn the truth. This section provides a correct response to the issue of how old the Earth is for people who believe that there is a God, that Jesus is His Son, and that the Bible is His Word. If God had included a passage in the Bible that stated anything to the effect of: “When Jesus was born, the Earth was exactly 4,134 years old,” it would have solved a slew of difficulties.

We must often look at multiple different scriptures and fit them together like a jigsaw in order to figure out what the Bible says about a given issue.

In one sense, the Bible provides us with a precise estimate of the age of the Earth.

“From the beginning of the creation,” Jesus stated emphatically.

  • Were people present at the beginning of the six-day period?
  • But what does it matter if mankind was created on the sixth day of creation?
  • Simple as that, when paired with the knowledge from Genesis 1 and Mark 10:6, we may conclude that the Earth is exactly five days older than humans!
  • In terms of round numbers, it has been about 2,000 years since Jesus Christ made his first appearance on Earth.
  • 2002 (A.D.
  • After that, we need to figure out how many years passed between Jesus Christ and Abraham.
  • These two numbers may be found in almost every secular history text on the subject of slavery.

According to Genesis 1:1-5, the Earth was created on the first day of creation.

In addition, we know from Genesis 1 that Adam was formed on the sixth day of the Creation seven-day period.

All that would be required to compute an estimated age for the Earth would be to add up the three figures—the time from Adam to Abraham, the time from Abraham to Jesus, and the time from Jesus to us—in order to arrive at a reasonable estimate.

So, how can we calculate the number of years that have elapsed throughout that period of time?

There were only 20 generations between Abraham and Adam, according to Luke’s account of history in the same chapter.

The age of the fathers at the time of the births of the sons throughout the era between Abraham and Adam is provided in Genesis 5, making the calculation of the estimated number of years over that time span an easy matter—a figure which turns out to be around 2,000 years.

Present to Jesus 2,000 years
Jesus to Abraham 2,000 years (55 generations)
Abraham to Adam 2,000 years (20 generations)

Some have suggested that the genealogies in Genesis 5 cannot be used to determine the age of the Earth since they include large gaps in the information they convey. According to Jude verse 14, however, “Enoch was the seventh from Adam,” which means “the seventh from Adam” (he is listed, in fact, exactly seventh in the genealogies in Genesis 5:21). In this way, we may be certain that there are no gaps between the first seven patriarchs since Jude, writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, corroborated the Old Testament record.

The evolutionary scenario that man has been on the planet (in some form) for around 3.5 million years would need the addition of approximately 290,000 years between each of the 13 generations.

Is it possible to think that the first seven generations are so precise, but the subsequent 13 generations feature “gaps” of more than 290,000 years in each?

After all of the parts have been put together, the Bible clearly teaches that the Earth is just roughly 6,000 years old or so.

Does the Bible Give an Age to the Earth?

The age of the world is one of the most crucial topics in the Bible/science debate, and it is also one of the most contentious. What is the age of the building? Is there a certain age for the world given in the Bible? Is it possible to reconcile the Bible with the fact that the planet and cosmos are billions of years old? Evolution The planet is thought to be roughly 4.6 billion years old now, whereas the universe is thought to be at least 10 to 15 billion years old, according to current estimates.

  • In order for life to spontaneously grow from an initial single cell to our present sophisticated cosmos, it would have taken billions of years.
  • H.
  • Starting with cosmogony, there are disagreements about the amount of time necessary for the planet to develop out of interstellar matter.
  • There is a third sort of proof in the form of radiometric dating (E.
  • Andrews,Creation and Evolution,Derek Burke editor, Oxford: University Press, 1985, p.
  • Many people believe that reasons like these support the thesis that the world is millions of years old.
  • Many people have misconceptions about what Christians believe about the age of the planet, and this is especially true among the general public.

If we start with the idea that God has the ability to do anything he wants, then he might have created the earth 6,000 years ago, or just last Tuesday, and then planted deceptive evidence to make it appear that it was billions of years older(italics his) than it actually was (Steve Allen,Steve Allen on Religion, The Bible, and Morality,Buffalo: Prometheus Books, 1990, p.

  1. This is an argument that is barely deserving of serious consideration.
  2. Second, the Bible does not state, and no serious Christian teaches, that God created the planet with fossils imbedded in the rocks in order to deceive unbelievers about the origins of the universe.
  3. Among Christians, including scientists and theologians, there are those who believe in the existence of an ancient cosmos.
  4. Geology necessitates a very lengthy historical period, and the Bible enables a very long historical period.

When was the year 4004 B.C.?

While the work of Archbishop James Ussher (1581-1656) is often credited with establishing this date of creation, others before and after Ussher came at the same conclusion.

The chronology developed by Usshers ultimately found its way into the margins of several English translations of the Scriptures.

for the year of creation was placed as a marginal remark in the English version of the Great Bible in 1701 by Bishop Lloyd, and, as a result, became a part of the Christian church’s theology by association.

In response to the scientific arguments put forward by the church, these dates were gradually removed from the Bibles beginning around the turn of the twentieth century (Ian Taylor,In the Minds of Men, Revised Edition, Toronto: TFE Publishing, 1987, p.

Many people, including atheist Robert Ingersoll, have scoffed at the idea of the world being created so early in history: And first, let us consider the biblical story of the creation of this planet, which began on Monday morning around five thousand eight hundred and eighty-three years ago, according to the Bible.

  2. We do not know when the earth was formed since the Bible does not provide us with that information.
  3. Even those who advocate for the recent creation perspective do not accept Ussher’s chronology as the precise date of creation as being accurate.
  4. date of creation is incorrect because the genealogies in Genesis that Ussher used to calculate the years from the creation to the birth of Christ are insufficient and hence untrustworthy.

As noted by the late Bible scholar Merrill Unger, “It is highly improbable that the genealogical framework of Genesis 5was intended to be used, or can be used, for calculating the number of years (1656) between the creation of man and the Flood, thereby dating man’s creation to 4004 B.C., or for any other purpose” (Ussher).

  • According to theologian John Whitcomb, stretching the genealogies of Genesis 5 and 11 to encompass a period of more than a hundred thousand years is a blatant violation of the chronological structure of all subsequent biblical history.

  • Fourth and last, it is hard to believe that Reu, Serug and Nahor, much alone Lamech, Noah and Shem, lived as wild and uneducated cave dwellers throughout the stone-age period.

Or are we to believe that in some remote corner of the world, surrounded by a sea of human savagery, an unbroken chain of saintly men (some of whom lived for centuries) has preserved the Messianic line of Shem and passed down the knowledge of the one true God for hundreds of thousands of years, despite the fact that the world has been engulfed by a sea of human savagery?

SummaryThe theory of evolution requires that the earth and universe be millions of years old, whereas the theory of special creation allows for either a young or an old earth.

The genealogies recorded in the Bible do not allow for a limitless period of time between Adam and Abraham, as some believe.

Most scientists, Christian and non-Christian, believe the earth and universe are old.

Scientist Paul Zimmerman writes:Thus the evolutionist needs a very old earth.

On the other hand the creationist can operate with a young earth or a very ancient one.

For the believer in creation the question is a different one: (1) What does the Bible say about the date of creation?

These questions the creationist seeks to answer.

The Bible permits certain general conclusions, but it does not give the age of the earth.

Ussher chronology – Wikipedia

A key point in the Bible vs science debate is the age of the planet, which is one of the most significant questions to consider. What is the age of the object. How accurate is the Bible’s estimate of Earth’s age? Do you think it is possible to reconcile the Bible with a billion-year-old earth and universe? Evolution According to current estimates, the earth is approximately 4.6 billion years old, whereas the universe is believed to be anywhere between 10 and 15 billion years old. According to evolutionists, it is necessary for the earth to be extremely old for the theory to be correct.

  1. Andrews, a scientist who believes the earth is relatively young, outlines the main arguments advanced by those who believe it is centuries old.
  2. First, there are the arguments from cosmogony, which concern the amount of time it takes for the earth to form from interstellar matter.

  • First and foremost, the Bible does not assign a date to the beginning of time.
  • We don’t know how old she is.
  • Scientist William Tanner states that the rock record has failed to reveal any evidence of a brief earth history despite the diligent search by many people who were determined to find such evidence.
  • In geology, long periods of time are required, and long periods of time are permitted by the Bible.

Many people believe that the entire creation account is only meant to be understood figuratively.

When was the year 4004 B.C.

The earth was created approximately six thousand years ago, in 4004 B.C., according to a widely held belief in science.

When working with the genealogical tables found in the Book of Genesis, and assuming that they were complete, Ussher came to the conclusion that the world had existed for 4004 years before Christ was born.

According to Ian Taylor, the date 4004 B.C.

Even before Darwin’s theory of evolution came into direct conflict with church doctrine, nearly every Bible published in the nineteenth century included Usshers’ date appended to the first page, followed by the sequential dates throughout the Bible up to the time of Christ’s birth, as evidenced by the following: In response to the scientific arguments put forth by the church, these dates were gradually removed from the Bibles beginning around the turn of the 20th century, quietly (Ian Taylor,In the Minds of Men, Revised Edition, Toronto: TFE Publishing, 1987, p.

As noted by the late Bible scholar Merrill Unger, “It is highly improbable that the genealogical framework of Genesis 5was intended to be used, or can be used, for calculating the number of years (1656) between the creation of man and the Flood, thereby dating man’s creation to 4004 B.C., or any other date” (Ussher).

  3. Consequently, an indefinite time interval between A and B may be desired (Merrill Unger,The New Ungers Bible Handbook, revised by Gary L.
  4. 36,37).
  5. Despite the fact that we are unable to date the earth with pinpoint accuracy due to gaps in the genealogies, we should not assume that these gaps give us an unlimited amount of time to date the planet.
  6. It is possible to discover gaps in biblical genealogies, particularly in the genealogies of Genesis 11, by applying biblical analogies.
  7. Instead of thirty thousand years, the time elapsed between Amram and Moses was only three hundred (cf.Exod.

It was fifty years, not five thousand years, that separated Joram and Uzziah in Matthew 1:8.

This is because the patriarchs listed before them were alive during the time period covered by their research (cf.Gen.

Despite this, the most obvious indication of a time lapse in Genesis 11 occurs before the judgment between Eber and Peleg, as a result of the sudden decrease in life span of Eber.

In the fourth chapter of Genesis, there is a clear indication of cultural achievement, including the forging of “all implements of bronze and iron” (Genesis 4:12), and in Genesis 6, there is an account of the great ark-building project, which completely disproves this theory.

Simply posing such a question necessitates a response (John Whitcomb,The Early Earth,Revised edition, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1986, p.

A creationist can work with either a very old or a very young earth, according to theoretic theory.

It is not taught anywhere in Scripture that the earth is billions of years old.

This account of creation is both simple and impressive because it speaks in terms of the creative acts of an omnipotent God, rather than in terms of limitless space and infinite time and infinite process (Oswald T.

It is incorrect to believe that the world is more than a few thousand years old, contrary to common opinion.

The Time Has a Different Qualitative Characteristic Some scientists believe that time had a distinct nature before the fall of civilization.

There was no sin because neither Satan nor Adam had fallen.

70).

He has also placed eternity in their hearts, with the exception of the fact that no one can discover the work that God has done from the beginning of creation (Ecclesiastes 3:11, emphasis added).

SummaryThe theory of evolution dictates that the planet and cosmos be millions of years old, but the notion of special creation allows for either a young or an ancient earth to be created.

A limitless period of time between Adam and Abraham is not permitted by the genealogy found in the Holy Bible.

The majority of scientists, both Christian and non-Christian, believe that the earth and universe are millions of years old.

Paul Zimmerman, an evolutionary biologist, writes: “An extremely old earth is required by evolutionists.” If the earth is only a few thousand years old, his theory is completely futile.

For the creationist, millions of years are not required in order for his theory to be viable.

(2) Is this information at odds with the facts that have come to light as a result of scientific investigation?

In reality, neither scientists nor creationists can pinpoint the exact date of the universe’s inception.

Scientists are also capable of performing some interesting calculations, but their calculations are often complicated by a variety of shaky assumptions, and the results are often clouded by serious questions that arise during the research process (P.

Zimmerman, “The Age of the Earth,” inDarwin, Evolution and Creation, P.A.

Louis: Concordia, 1959, pp.

It is also possible that time had a different quality prior to the introduction of sin into the world.

Mark Twain made a sardonic observation about the age of the world when he said: “In the course of one hundred and seventy-six years, the lower Mississippi has shrunk by two hundred and forty-two miles.” Approximately one mile and three-quarters each year is the equivalent of this.

The same may be said for the future, when the lower Mississippi will be a mile and three-quarters long and Cairo and New Orleans will have united their streets to function as a single city under the leadership of a single mayor who is also the chairman of a joint board of Aldermen.

Such massive rewards may be obtained from such a little expenditure of time and effort in the first instance (Samuel L.

156).

As an appropriate conclusion, Old Testament expert Ronald Youngblood says, “Of course, no one knows exactly when the beginning of time occurred.” However, the Old Testament is far more concerned with the fact of creation than it is with the time of creation, and the simple fact that God’s creative activity took place during an indeterminate period of time known as “the beginning” was joyfully celebrated by poet (Ps.

102.25) and prophet (Isa. 40:21) alike was a source of delight for both (Ronald Youngblood,How It All Began, Ventura, California: Regal Books, 1980, p. 22).

Ussher’s methods

The fact that the chronologies of Ussher and other biblical historians were so closely aligned was due to the fact that they both utilized essentially the same approach to compute major events reported in the Bible. The fact that the Bible was produced by numerous writers over multiple centuries with long chronological gaps makes it impossible to undertake a simple totalling of Biblical ages and dates. Ussher’s calendar was the subject of an article by James Barr, who highlighted three separate times that Ussher and others had to contend with:

  1. ” From the beginning of time to Abraham’s exodus.” This portion is rather simple to compute, as it is based on the chronological data in Genesis 5 and 11, which provides an uninterrupted male lineage, along with the corresponding years, from the creation until Abraham’s expulsion from Ur of the Chaldeans, respectively. Wesley Ussher relied on the chronology given in the Masoretic text rather than the alternate chronologies available in the Septuagint and the Samaritan Pentateuch for his work. From 4004 to 1922 BC, according to Ussher, this era spanned 2082 years, and was known as “Abraham’s exodus to Solomon’s temple.” Ussher estimated that it took 430 years from Abraham’s departure from Haran to the Exodus (based on Abraham’s descendants experiencing 400 years of persecution that began 30 years after Abraham’s departure from Haran) to get the Israelites out of Egypt. 480 years elapsed between the Exodus from Egypt and the beginning of building on Solomon’s temple in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign, according to the book of 1 Kings 6. This means that 910 years had passed after Abraham left Haran, and that these 910 years were between 1922 and 1012 BC
  2. This is known as the “period of the temple laid to the Babylonian captivity.” Since the years of the kingdoms of Judah and Israel have been difficult to correlate in the past, this time has proven to be the most difficult to compute overall. The straightforward adding of the reigns of Judah’s rulers resulted in a total of 430 years, however Ussher reduced this to 424 years by positing a few overlapping reigns: 1012 to 588 BC
  3. 1012 to 588 BC.

Ussher utilized 2 Rulers 25:27 to determine the length of time that had elapsed between the beginning of the world and the accession of the Babylonian monarch Amel-Marduk after calculating the years from creation to the final kings of Judah (also known as Evil-Merodach). In the following years, he gathered material from Babylonian, Greek, and Roman sources, which he used to determine the date of Amel-enthronement Marduk’s at 562 BC (after Nebuchadnezzar’s death), from which he was able to extrapolate that the universe was created in 4004 BC.

  • We know that Christ was born in 5 BC because Josephus predicted that Herod the Great died in 4 BC, and Ussher picked that year as Christ’s birth year.
  • For a long time after Ussher’s death, the exact season in which Creation occurred was the topic of heated religious controversy.
  • Several others, including Ussher, believed that it was more likely to have occurred during the autumn season, primarily since that season represented the beginning of the Jewish calendar year.
  • Because God rested on the seventh day of creation, which is Saturday in the Jewish calendar, the day of the week was calculated backwards from that point.
  • The astronomical tables that Ussher was most likely using wereKepler’sTabulae Rudolphinae, which are a collection of astronomical tables (Rudolphine Tables, 1627).
  • Genesis 1:16 is the first verse in the Bible.
  • (by the Julian calendar).
  • Ussher made reference to his chronology of creation on the first page ofAnnalesin Latin, as well as on the first page of its posthumous English translationAnnals of the World, both of which were published after his death (1658).
  • God created the heavens and the earth in the beginning of time.

It is in his “Epistle to the Reader” that Ussher offers a slightly different period, which is included in both his Latin and English works: “I infer that the time from the creation to midnight, January 1, 1 AD was 4003 years, seventy days, and six hours.” It would be 6 p.m.

Ussher’s chronology today

By the middle of the nineteenth century, proponents of uniformitarianism became increasingly critical of Ussher’s chronology, arguing that Ussher’s “young Earth” was irreconcilable with the widely accepted notion of an Earth that was considerably older than Ussher’s. It became widely recognized that the Earth was tens of millions, if not hundreds of millions, of millions, of years old. It was also among theologians that Ussher suffered a fall from grace; in 1890, Princeton professorWilliam Henry Green published an article in Bibliotheca Sacraentitled “Primeval Chronology” that was immensely popular and in which he harshly criticized Ussher.

B.

He wrote: “I shall be defending Ussher’s chronology as an honorable effort for its time and arguing that our usual ridicule only records a lamentable small-mindedness based on mistaken use of present criteria to judge a distant and different past.” Ussher exemplified the pinnacle of academic achievement in his day.

How Old Is the Earth?

The Bible does not need us to think of the planet as being 6,000 years old in order to understand it. Although it is correct that the shortest length of time that can be determined from the genealogical lists in Genesis would date creation at around 4000 BC, this is a conservative estimate. Biblical genealogies, on the other hand, may omit generations. For example, in Matthew 1.1, it is said that Jesus was the son of David, who in turn was the son of Abraham, which is the most evident illustration of this.

  • They were employed in order to convey the tale of a particular family.
  • The author of Genesis was most likely not concerned with providing us with a precise date for the creation of the world.
  • In this case, it would have been fully within his rights to condense or eliminate portions of the genealogies in order to serve a different purpose.
  • A number of cases have been reported in which testing carried out by various laboratories on the same material generated dramatically different findings.
  • When it comes to dating methods that claim to have discovered millions of years of age, one of the most interesting aspects is that they are based on a premise that appears to go opposite to another widely accepted modern concept: evolution.
  • They must make the assumption that the forces of nature and physical laws have remained constant for millions and billions of years, if not billions.
  • Consequently, these dating methods must be predicated on the assumption that the world we witness now operates in the same way it did billions of years ago.

There is no law or force of nature that we can witness that even substantially matches what would be required to take materials in chaos and arrange them into life, nor do we observe any law or force of nature that explains how simplicity might transform into complexity (let alone the complexity of life).

  • Energy is always dissipating.
  • Evolution, if it is genuine, means that whatever forces and rules of nature are responsible for its occurrence are no longer in effect.
  • Scientists can’t have it both ways at the same time.
  • All of this is to imply that there is no compelling evidence to support the earth’s age of 4.5 billion years.
  • Although it is possible that creation did not take place in 4000BC, there is no reason to doubt that the book of Genesis is considerably closer to the truth than the current level of contemporary knowledge.

Genesis chapters 1-11, in my opinion, should not be taken literally or in a symbolic sense. It is my opinion that they should be taken in the simple sense of the words that were used to write them.
