How can Jesus be both God and the Son of God?

Because the phrases ″God″ and ″son of God″ do not imply the same thing, Jesus can be both God and the son of God.Whenever we affirm that Jesus is God (John 1:1, 14; Colossians 2:9; Hebrews 1:8), we are referring to the fact that Jesus has been endowed with the divine essence (as well as human nature, see hypostatic union).However, the title ″Son of God″ does not imply that Jesus is not God in the traditional sense.Consider the implications of this.

So, if the word ″Son of God″ implies that Jesus is not God, would the term ″Son of Man″ imply that Jesus is not a human being as well?Without a doubt, this is not the case.In the same way, since the title ″Son of Man″ refers to Jesus as a man, does it not follow that when it is said that Jesus is the ″Son of God,″ it implies that he is God?Modern thinking should not be applied to the archaic language contained in the Bible, and we should avoid doing so.It was because of this that the Jews were even more zealous in their efforts to assassinate Him, for he was not only violating the Sabbath but also addressing God as his own Father, so elevating himself to God’s level.(See also John 5:18.) As you can see in this passage, Jesus was referring to God as his own Father, thereby elevating himself to the status of God.

Because of this, when the epithet ″Son of God″ refers to Christ, it is a designation of equality with God rather than a declaration of superiority.

Jesus is the Son of God

Throughout the New American Standard Bible, the phrase ″Son of God″ appears 44 times in the text.Every time it is utilized, it is in the name of Christ.It is a term that signifies his preeminence, holiness, and intimacy with God the Father, among other things.In fact, we can see that the Pharisees intended to put him to death because he declared himself to be the son of God, saying, ″I and the Father are one.″ 31 The Jews gathered their stones once more to stone Him.

32 ″I have shown you many excellent acts from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?″ Jesus responded to their question.33 ″We do not stone You for doing a good deed; rather, we stone You for blasphemy; and we stone You because You, being a man, make yourself out to be God,″ they said.34 Is it not written in your Law, ‘I SAID, YOU ARE GOD’?″ Jesus questioned.″Has it not been written in your Law, ‘I SAID, YOU ARE GOD?’″ 35 Assuming that he addressed them as gods, to whom the word of God was sent (and the Scriptures are infallible), 36 do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ″You are blaspheming,″ because He declared, ″I am the Son of God?″ (See also John 10:30-36.) During this passage, we witness the second occurrence of Jesus being threatened with death by stoning.The first one takes place a bit earlier in the day.″Jesus responded to them, ‘Truly, truly, I tell to you, I am the one who existed before Abraham was born.″ In response, they gathered stones to throw at Him; however, Jesus disguised himself and fled from the temple″ (John 8:58-59).

The significance of Jesus’ remarks here is that he declares himself to be the ″I am.″ This is comparable to the content of the book of Exodus.
When God revealed Himself to Moses, He stated, ″I AM WHO I AM,″ and He instructed Moses to tell the sons of Israel, ″The I AM has sent me to you.″ 15 In addition, God instructed Moses to tell the sons of Israel, ″’The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’″ God also instructed Moses, ″Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers’, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.″ ″This is my given name for all time, and this is my memorial given name to all generations,″ says the author (Exodus 3:14-15).
Taking everything into consideration, we find that Jesus was claiming the divine title for himself (John 8:58; Exodus 3:14-15), which is why the Jews want to have him killed (John 8:59 and John 10:31).

In accordance with this interpretation, Jesus was asserting his equality with God by proclaiming himself as the Son of God.
When we claim that Jesus is God, we are implying that he is divine in his inherent character.
After all, he is the second person of the Trinitarian Trinity.

However, when we claim that Jesus is the Son of God, we are implying that he is also God, since that is what the phrase ″the Son of God″ implies.

Is Jesus God or the Son of God

A guy who lived around 2,000 years ago is considered to be the most renowned and influential person to have ever walked the globe.He went by the name of Jesus of Nazareth, and he worked as a carpenter.But he was much more than a carpenter in his own right.

He was the individual who served as the focal point of Christianity.He was the Christ, as the saying goes.The Messiah, to be precise.God’s only begotten Son.He is the Almighty.

While there are those who do not think Jesus was the son of God, there are many more who do not believe Jesus was God.
This is true even among individuals who identify themselves as Christians.
This is the revelation of God’s truth about who Jesus is.
God’s Son is referred to as ″the Son of God.″ As soon as the angel revealed to Mary that she would get pregnant regardless of her status as a virgin, he made it obvious who the child would be.
Luke 1:34-35 (New American Standard Bible)34 ″How is this possible, considering that I am a virgin?″ Mary inquired of the angel.
35 ″The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and it is for this reason that the holy Child will be named the Son of God,″ the angel spoke to her.

Even the fallen angels realized He was the Son of God at that point.
Luke 4:41 (New American Standard Bible)41 Demons were also rushing out of the woodwork in droves, yelling, ″You are the Son of God!″ Matthew 8:28-29 (NASB)28 When He reached the other side of the Jordan, into the area of the Gadarenes, He was greeted by two men who were demon-possessed as they emerged from the graves.
They were so ferociously aggressive that no one dared to cross through that area.
They screamed out, ″What business do we have with one other, Son of God?″ they exclaimed.
What brings You here to afflict us before the appointed time?″ When Jesus turned to his followers and asked them who they thought He was, they replied, ″They claim He is.″ They responded in a variety of ways to His question.
″Who do you think I am?″ He then inquired of them.

Matthew 16:16 (New American Standard Bible)16 Simon Peter said, ″You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,″ which means ″you are the Christ.″ Is it possible that Jesus made this assertion in his own words?Luke 22:70 (New American Standard Bible)70 ″Are you the Son of God, then?″ they all said in agreement.And He responded by saying, ″Yes, I am.″ Despite this, even the Father referred to Jesus as His Son.It happened not once, but twice.On two occasions, after his baptism and on the mountain of transfiguration, Jesus appeared to them.

Matthew 3:16 (New American Standard Bible)16 Immediately following his baptism, Jesus rose from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and settling on Him; and behold, a voice from the heavens said, ″This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well delighted.″ Matthew 17:5 (New American Standard Bible)5 While he was still speaking, a dazzling cloud passed over them, and out of the cloud came a voice that said, ″This is My beloved Son, with whom I am pleased; pay attention to Him!″.
If you accept that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, you must also believe that Jesus is the Son of God.
Otherwise, you are a heretic.
There can be no question in the minds of those who believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God that Jesus was the Son of God.

It was claimed by angels.Demons were the ones who claimed it.It was believed by his disciples.It was asserted by him himself, and even God the Father said it twice.Jesus is the Son of God.Thousands of years before Jesus was born, the prophets had prophesied of the Messiah who was to come.

Isaiah 7:14 (New American Standard Bible)14 As a result, the Lord Himself will send you a sign: see, a virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, whom she will name Immanuel.
The name ″Immanuel″ means ″God with us″ in the original Hebrew.
Isaiah 9:6 (New American Standard Bible)6 In fact, a son will be delivered to us; and the government will be placed on His shoulders; and His name will be Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, and Prince of Peace; and the government will be placed on His shoulders.
With no shadow of a doubt, the Messiah would be God manifest in the flesh, as predicted by all of God’s authentic prophets.
What about those who were the closest to Jesus in terms of proximity?
What about his own disciples?

John 20:27-28 (New American Standard Bible)27 ″Reach here with your finger and see My hands; and reach here with your hand and put it into My side; and do not be disbelieving, but believing,″ He instructed Thomas.28 ″My Lord and my God!″ Thomas exclaimed in response to His words.There was no ″My Lord the Son of God″ in Thomas’s speech.

″My Lord and my God!″ he exclaimed.
However, it is not Thomas’ words that are important in this instance, but rather Jesus’ attitude.
29 ″Have you believed in Me because you have seen Me?″ Jesus inquired of the man.
It is fortunate for those who did not see but yet believed.″ When Jesus adds, ″Because you have seen me, you believe,″ he is not correcting him, but rather expressing general agreement with him.
Those who believe despite their inability to see are blessed.
There are additional texts in the Bible that say unequivocally that Jesus is God.

John 1:18 (New American Standard Bible)18 No one has ever seen God; the only begotten God, who dwells in the heart of the Father, has shown Himself to us in His explanation.
Paul writes in Titus 2:13 that he is looking forward to the good hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
2 1 Peter 1:3–4 (NASB) 1 Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, writes to those who have received a faith that is similar to ours, through the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ: ″To those who have received a faith that is similar to ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ: Then there’s still another example that’s crystal plain but yet still requires a little bit of interpretation.
Revelation 19:13 (New American Standard Bible)13 His clothes are made of blood, and His name is The Word of God, which means ″Word of the Lord.″ There is no getting around that.
When Jesus is called ″the Word of God,″ it is a reverent title.

What more does the Bible have to say about God’s Son?
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:1-5 (NASB)1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 He was there with God from the beginning.
3 It was by Him that all things came into being, and it was through Him that nothing came into existence that has come into being so far.
4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light that shone in the darkness.

5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness is unable to grasp what is happening.
Verse 1 states that there was a beginning with the Word (with a capital ″W″), and that the Word was with God and that the Word was the Word.
Something is made clear in verse 2.
The Word is not a thing; rather, it is a person.
″He was with God in the beginning.″ Then, assuming that the Word is a He and that Jesus is referred to as the Word of God, who else might this verse be referring to?

So let us reread these lines, but this time we will substitute Jesus for the word ″Word.″ 1 In the beginning, there was Jesus, and Jesus was in God’s presence, and Jesus was God himself.2 Jesus was there with God at the beginning of time.3 Everything that exists came into existence as a result of Jesus’ sacrifice, and nothing that has been before Jesus came into being.

4 There was life in Jesus, and the life was the Light of mankind.
5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness is unable to grasp what is happening.
Verse 5 makes it very clearer that this is a reference to Jesus himself.
Even if the Light shines in the darkness, the darkness is unable to see it.
This is informing us that Jesus was the light that shone in the darkness of the world, and that the world was unable to grasp what he had accomplished.

That is why He was slain by the rest of the world.Even with all of this evidence pointing to Jesus’ divinity, what if you still require confirmation from the lips of Christ himself?When the Jews interrogated Jesus, they asked Him the following question…John 8:57-59 (New American Standard Bible)57 As a result, the Jews confronted Him, saying, ″You are not yet fifty years old, and have you met Abraham?″ 58 ″Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the one who existed before Abraham was born.″ Jesus continued to speak to them.59 In response, they gathered stones to throw at Him, but Jesus quickly disguised himself and fled from the temple grounds to the outside world.Not only was Jesus claiming to have existed before Abraham’s birth, but He also used a strange term to support his claim.

He uses the pronoun ″I am″ when referring to Himself in the past tense.In fact, it was this precise phrase that incited the Jews to seek His death since it was a clear allusion to the time when Moses saw the burning bush and was ordered to meet Pharaoh of Egypt by the hand of the Almighty.When Moses inquired of God, ″Whom shall I inform them that I was sent?″ God’s response was, ″Tell them that I AM the one who sent you!″ When Jesus said it, He was making it apparent that He claimed to be God, and the Jews were quick to understand this.

After that, there’s this.30 John 10:30 (New American Standard Bible) ‘I and the Father are one,’ I declare.″ Some people are perplexed by this, assuming that Jesus is claiming to be the Father.Jesus is simply stating that both He and the Father are God.The replies of the Jews, on the other hand, are quite intriguing.31 The Jews gathered their stones once more to stone Him.32 ″I have shown you many excellent acts from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?″ Jesus responded to their question.

33 ″We do not stone You for doing a good deed; rather, we stone You for blasphemy; and we stone You because You, being a man, make yourself out to be God,″ they said.
This is the second chapter in which the Jews understood that Jesus was not only claiming to be the Son of God, but that He was also claiming to be God.
How is it possible for Jesus to be both God and the Son of God?
Matthew 28:19 (New American Standard Bible)19 Make disciples of all countries, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to do everything I have spoken to you.

Part of the problem is that some people have difficulty seeing God beyond the Father as the source of all creation.
They believe that there is only one genuine God, and that is the Father, and that this is the case.
What, then, is the role of the Holy Spirit in this scenario?

Ananias sold his land and kept a portion of the proceeds for himself, while pretending that He was giving it all to the group.
Ananias was approached by Peter, who inquired as to why he was deceiving the Holy Spirit.
Only a few paragraphs later, Peter confesses to Ananias that he had lied to the Lord.

There can be no doubt that Peter was claiming that the Holy Spirit was the same as God.
As you can see, the fact is that there is only one God.
There is only one God.
God, on the other hand, is composed of three distinct individuals.

There are three persons in the Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.People have a propensity to think of God as a single thing that exists in all places.Because the football season is beginning up again as I write this, and because I am a die-hard Detroit Lions fan, I will use the team as an example.

If I told you that there is only one legitimate Detroit Lions squad, and that it had 53 players, you would believe me.
Matthew Stafford is a Lion, and Marvin Jones Jr.
is also a Lion in the National Football League.
All 53 players on the roster are Lions, however there is only one Lions squad, as opposed to other teams.
Take a look at how much flawless logical sense that makes!

In that case, why can’t God be a composite of three different entities instead of just one?The Father is the Supreme Being.God is revealed in the Son.The Holy Spirit is the same as God.

All three of them are gods in their own right.They are not three independent gods, but rather one genuine God who exists as a group of three!The plain reality is that the Bible has ample evidence in support of both claims.

There are several instances in the Bible where angels, devils, and disciples proclaim that Jesus is the son of the living God.All of the evidence points to Jesus being God in the same direction.In their respective claims, both Jesus and the Father assert that Jesus is the Son of God the Father.

Jesus Himself asserts that He is the Son of God.Given that both Jesus and the Father are deity, why does Jesus declare, ″the Father is greater than I″?John 14:28 (New American Standard Bible)28 You must have overheard me telling you, ‘I’m going away, and I’ll come to you.’ It is only because you love Me that you would have rejoiced when I went to the Father, since the Father is greater than I am.Many people are perplexed by this verse because it implies that the Father is greater than Jesus, which implies that they are not equal components of God.As a result, many people believe that this demonstrates that God is the Father and Jesus is the Son, but that He is not God.

He is merely a human being.Both yes and no!This is how everything works.God is the triune being comprised of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, all three of whom are one.

All three of them are God.Despite the fact that they are not all gods (plural), they are all God!Because every person was born into a state of sin.We are all born into a state of slavery to sin.There was a time when God (all three of them) realized that the only way any of us would ever be rescued from our sin was if there was a genuinely pure and flawless sacrifice that would be sufficient to cover all of our sins.As a result, the Son, the Word, through whom everything was created, chose to become the perfect sacrifice for us.

The Word, in order to be born as a mere human being, relinquished all of His divine abilities.
Despite the fact that Jesus was still God, He was no longer God in any sense other than in name, because He had been born fully into the human race.
Every feeling or sensation that every other person feels was experienced by Jesus, including pain, heartbreak, love, rage, and every other emotion or sense.

When Jesus walked the world, He did not possess any supernatural abilities.
He’d put them all in a separate area.
It should be noted that none of the miracles He did were of His own doing, but rather were works of the Father accomplished through Him.

They were all carried out on the basis of faith, just as the Apostles carried out miracles on the basis of faith after Jesus died.In several instances, Jesus stated things that made it plain that He did nothing unless He first observed the Father doing it.It was through Him that the Father’s works were completed.He is subordinate to the Father, who is greater than He.

Because the Father was a spirit who possessed all of God’s powers, whereas Jesus was merely a human being who possessed none of God’s divine powers while on earth.
Jesus was able to educate His followers, as well as the rest of the world, about the importance of faith in this manner.
Everything that Jesus accomplished was accomplished through faith.
As a result, even though Jesus was walking the world and was completely human, with no divine abilities, the Father was unquestionably greater than He.
Once Jesus died and rose from the dead, and then ascended to heaven, He was able to cast off his old flesh and put on His imperishable body, reclaiming his divine abilities, and reclaiming his entire divinity once more.

This, in my perspective, just serves to highlight how much greater Jesus’ sacrifice was than I previously realized.
It is because of this that God was willing to become totally human and suffer and die as He did in order to provide us with the ideal sacrifice.
That He, being God, cared enough about us to go to such lengths!

Christianity is the only religion on the planet in which salvation is a gift, rather than something we have to work for.In fact, it is the only religion in which God has shown such great love for us that He has been willing to take on our human form and sacrifice Himself, His Son, for us in order that we might be saved.That is just incredible!

What does it mean that Jesus is the Son of God?

Answer to the question As opposed to a human father and son, Jesus is not God’s Son in the traditional sense.God did not get married and have a son like the rest of us.God did not have a sexual relationship with Mary and create a son with her.

Jesus is God’s Son in the sense that He is God manifested in the shape of a human being (John 1:1, 14).In the sense that He was conceived in Mary by the Holy Spirit, Jesus is God’s Son.″The angel replied, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you,’″ according to Luke 1:35.As a result, the holy one who will be born will be referred to as the Son of God.″ Jesus was being tried in front of a group of Jewish authorities when the High Priest confronted him, saying, ″I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God″ (Matthew 26:63).″’Yes, it is exactly as you say,’ Jesus said.″ The Son of Man will sit at the right hand of the Mighty One, and he will descend on clouds of heaven,’ Jesus says to his followers.’″ (Matthew 26:64; Mark 12:64).

When Jesus did not react, the Jewish authorities accused him of blasphemy (Matthew 26:65-66).
In later proceedings before Pontius Pilate, ″[t]he Jews contended that [Jesus] must die since he claimed to be the Son of God, in accordance with the law that we have.″ (See also John 19:7).
For what reason would His assertion that he is the Son of God be deemed blasphemy and deserving of a death penalty?
The Jewish authorities were well aware of what Jesus was referring to when he used the title ″Son of God.″ Being the Son of God entails having the same nature as the Creator.
The Son of God is referred to as ″of God.″ Because Jesus’ claim to be of the same nature as God—indeed, to be God—was considered blasphemy by the Jewish authorities, they sought Jesus’ execution in accordance with Leviticus 24:15, the law of Moses.
This is expressed quite clearly in Hebrews 1:3, which states, ″The Son is the brightness of God’s glory and the precise image of His existence.″ Another example may be seen in John 17:12, where Judas is referred to as the ″son of perdition,″ which means ″son of destruction.″ We learn that Judas was the son of Simon in the book of John 6:71.

What does it imply when the Bible refers to Judas as the ″son of perdition″ in John 17:12?
The term perdition literally translates as ″destruction, ruin, and waste.″ Despite the fact that Judas was not the actual offspring of ″ruin, devastation, and waste,″ those things were the defining characteristics of Judas’ existence.
Judas was a physical incarnation of the forces of perdition.
In the same manner, Jesus is considered to be the Son of God.
God is the Son of God, and the Son of God is God.

To the best of my knowledge, the Bible declares unequivocally that Jesus is the Son of God.In addition, the Bible teaches that Jesus is both entirely God and totally man.How can He be both at the same time?

A Jew would have understood the term ″Son of God″ to mean that Jesus was the one and only real God in the ancient world, and this was the case historically.It would have been impossible for the Jews, who were monotheistic, to think that God the Father had a son, whom they called the Son.According to Jehovah’s Witnesses, the phrase Son of God implies that Jesus is a ″lesser″ god; a created entity.From Isaiah 43 through 48, it is unambiguously stated that there is only one Deity, and that the concept of ″a lesser god″ is rejected.The Jews of Jesus’ day would never have accepted the existence of a lesser deity, or any other belief that was not monotheistic in nature.

As a result, whether Jesus was referred to as the Son of God or claimed to be the Son of God, he was asserting that he was entirely God.
This was, of course, sacrilege and deserving of death.
This argument will be supported by references to the Bible.
We read in John 5:15-18 and 25:1-5 that He left and informed the Jews that Jesus was the one who had restored his health.″ 16 As a result, the Jews were persecuting Jesus because He was performing these acts on the Sabbath, which was a violation of Jewish law.
17 ″My Father is working till now, and I, too, am working,″ He said in response to their questions.
18 As a result, the Jews were even more determined to assassinate Him, not only because he was violating the Sabbath, but also because he was addressing God as his own Father, so elevating himself to the status of God…

25 I declare to you that the hour has come and is now, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear him will live.″ ″Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and it is now,″ says the Lord.
Jesus not only referred to himself as the Son of God in verse 25, but he also referred to God as His Father in verse 17; to the Jews, this was blasphemy since it implied that he was on an equal footing with God.
A second source of support is found in John 10:29-33: ″My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to take them from My Father’s hand.″ 30 ″I am the Father, and the Father is me.″ 31 The Jews gathered their stones once more to stone Him.
32 Jesus responded, ″I demonstrated to you many excellent deeds from the Father; for which of them are you stoning Me?″ 33 ″We do not stone You for doing a good deed; rather, we stone You for blasphemy; and we stone You because You, being a man, make yourself out to be God,″ they said.
Jesus refers to God as ″Father,″ suggesting that He is the ″Son of God″ (John 5:18), and that He is making an unmistakable claim to be the one real God.
According to Jewish law, professing to be God was punishable by death (blasphemy); as a result, the Jews wished to stone Jesus.

In conclusion, we read in John 20:28-31 that Thomas responded by saying to Jesus, ″My Lord and my God!″ 29 In response, Jesus* asked him, ″Have you believed because you have seen Me?It is fortunate for those who did not see but yet believed.″ 30 As a result, many more signs were performed in Jesus’ presence in the sight of the disciples that are not recorded in this book; 31 but these have been recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.″ Thomas, a monotheistic Jew, refers to Jesus as God in this passage.In reality, the true translation from Greek to English in verse 28 reveals that Thomas declared, ″The God of me and the Lord of me.″ It is important to note that Jesus does not chastise Thomas for referring to him as God, but rather commends him for his faith.This is one of the most emphatic expressions in the Bible in which Jesus is referred to as God.It has been said by the Apostle John that much more might have been written about Jesus, but that these specific texts were intended to assist people in coming to accept that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God.

Overall, the title ″Son of God″ is given to Jesus in order to demonstrate that He is both entirely God and totally man.

We began by discussing many reasons for the existence of God, followed by arguments in support of Christianity (including the resurrection of Christ).Since then, we’ve worked our way through the most frequent arguments against Christianity that people have to offer.Today, we’ll wrap things off with one final criticism that merits far more consideration than it now receives: How is it possible for Jesus to be both God and the Son of God?Isn’t this an example of how Christianity is inherently contradictory?If a guy can be his own son, doesn’t it seem absolutely illogical?

If that’s the case, how can Jesus be both God and God’s son?
The understanding that the title ″Son of God″ has more than one connotation is critical in responding to this.

“Son of God” means “King of Israel”

One of the reasons that Jesus was referred to as the Son of God was because it was a way of referring to him as the king of Israel, which was one of his primary roles.In the Psalms, the king of Israel is referred to as ″the Son of God,″ which means ″God’s Son.″ The One seated on the throne of glory scoffs at them, and the Lord laughs at them.In his fury, he rebukes them and terrifies them with the words, ″I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain,″ 6 he says.

7 I will declare the decree of the LORD, which he spoke to me and said, ″You are my son; today I have become your father.″ 8 You only have to ask and I will make the nations your inheritance and the ends of the world your own.(2) (Psalm 2:1-4; 2:7-8) There is a good reason for the psalmist’s choice of words.It harks back to a promise that God made to King David thousands of years ago.In the words of God, David’s bloodline would be part of a royal dynasty that would last forever and ever.Furthermore, beginning with David’s son Solomon, each king who descends from this bloodline will enjoy a special relationship with God, with each one being referred to as ″the son of God.″ As God told David, after his days were done and he was resting with his ancestors, I would raise up your child to replace you, your own flesh and blood.

I would then build his kingdom.
Thirteen He alone will construct a temple for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his dominion for all time.
14, and he will be my son, because I will be his father.
When he does something wrong, I will punish him with a rod held by men and with floggings administered by human hands to make him pay for it.
15 But my affection for him will never be taken away from him, just as it was taken away from Saul, whom I banished from his presence before you.
It is said that ‘your house and dominion will endure forever before me; your reign will be set forever.’″ (16:12-16) in 2 Samuel 7:12-16) in 2 Samuel 7:12-16 God has promised that Solomon—and all of the monarchs who follow him—will be referred to as ″the son of God″ forever.

Following this usage, the word ″son of God″ came to be associated with the future Messiah, who was known as the ″Son of God″ for a while.
During Jesus’ trial, the religious leaders interrogated him in the following manner: Then the high priest rose to his feet in front of them and questioned Jesus, ″Are you not going to respond?″ ″Can you tell me what this evidence that these men are presenting against you is?″ 61 But Jesus stayed deafeningly silent and didn’t say anything.
″Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?″ the high priest inquired a second time of him.
62 ″I am,″ Jesus stated emphatically.
″And you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Mighty One, descending on the clouds of heaven,″ says the Bible.
(See Mark 14:60-62 for further information.) What is the significance of the Messiah being referred to be the Son of God?

Because the Messiah would rule over all of Israel as a king, this is the case.In reality, the Messiah would be the ruler of the entire globe.As a result, it was only right that he be given this title.

Son Means “Exact Likeness”

In first-century Jewish society, being the son of someone (being ″begotten″ by them) meant that you were a perfect replica of that person’s physical characteristics.In one sense, this isn’t all that shocking.Rarely does a kid end up in the same same profession as his father, with a few notable exceptions.

If your father was a blacksmith, you went on to become a blacksmith; if your father was a farmer, you went on to become a farmer, and so on.However, being referred to as a certain man’s ″son″ implied that you were similar to him in intangible ways, notably in terms of character and nature.It implied that you were a carbon copy of them.And this is why the Jews considered it blasphemy for Jesus to address God as his Father: It was for this reason that the Jews worked even harder to put him to death; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was also addressing God as his own Father, effectively elevating himself to the status of God.(See also John 5:18.) Take note of the final phrase: by referring to God as his father, Jesus elevated himself to the level of God.

Again, to be someone’s son meant that you shared their essence, that you shared their nature in its most fundamental form.
Consequently, when the title Son of God is employed in this context, it signifies that Jesus is not just the Messiah, but he is also the Creator.

“Son” Refers To Human Nature of Christ

The fact that Jesus did not have an earthly father is the most evident reason why he is referred to be the Son of God.As we remember each Christmas, Jesus was born of a virgin, just as we do every year.God the Father and God the Holy Spirit worked together supernaturally in the womb of Mary to bring Jesus into the world: ″How will this be possible, considering that I am a virgin?″ Mary inquired of the angel.

35 ″The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you,″ the angel said.As a result, the holy one who will be born will be addressed as ″the Son of God.″ (See also Luke 1:34-35) Mary was not conceived by a human guy, as is commonly believed.God was the one who carried out the deed.This is one of the most obvious explanations for why Jesus is referred to be the Son of God.

Conclusion

As you can see, the term ″Son of God″ may have a variety of connotations. When applied to Jesus, it relates to the following:

The fact that he is the Messiah and the King of Israel (as well as the rest of the world)
His being identical to God the Father
his being supernaturally born of a virgin
and his being born of a virgin.

Therefore, the term does not accurately depict Jesus’ lineage.For all of eternity past, he existed in the form of God.He was not born into this world.

This term is derived from his perspective on human nature.It is quite unlikely that Christ would have been able to claim the title of Son of God if he had not taken on human nature.1 As a result, there is no incompatibility between Jesus’ status as the Son of God and his status as God, the second member of the Triune God.1.Christians, on the other hand, are allowed to differ on this point since it is an open subject.

Numerous smart and saintly theologians think that Jesus has some form of eternal link of sonship with God the Father and that this relationship will continue in perpetuity.
Personally, I don’t understand the point of it, and the biblical justifications for it are unconvincing to my ears.
Jack Cottrell’s statement sums up my point of view: What, therefore, is the status of the fundamental notion of Christ’s everlasting sonship in the first place?
What, if anything, makes the Father-Son connection ontological and everlasting, despite the fact that the idea of generation is not?
The notion of Jesus’ everlasting sonship has been a fundamental Christian belief for a long time, and some believe that it is vital to Christian orthodoxy.
This, however, is not the case in practice.

It has not been embraced by everyone who is otherwise orthodox in his theism.
For example, Alexander Campbell taught that Christ existed before to the incarnation as the Logos, but that his sonship started with the incarnation.
When the term ″Son of God″ refers to a temporal relationship, the phrase ″the Word of God″ refers to an everlasting, uncreated relationship.″ There was a word from God that went back to the beginning of time, but the Son of God came into being during the reign of Augustus Caesar.″ When the Christian system was established, the full ″relationship of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit came into being″ (see Alexander Campbell, The Christian System, Chapter IV).
I agree with this viewpoint, and I do not believe that there is a question of orthodoxy at stake because there appears to be nothing lost or won by restricting the Father-Son connection to Christ’s incarnate condition, nor anything gained or gained by expanding it into eternity past.
I would argue, in particular, that Christ’s Godhead and equality with God are not contingent on the existence of an everlasting sonship relationship.
In any case, deriving divinity from everlasting sonship is an inference, and there are undoubtedly enough explicit allusions to Christ’s deity in the Bible to establish this fact as a reality apart from this questionable concept.

How can Jesus be God and Son of God at the same time?

There are some passages in the Bible that are straightforward to comprehend.However, there are some passages in the Bible that are difficult to comprehend.No matter how much you research, it will always be a mystery.

One of those puzzles is how Jesus can be both God and the Son of God at the same time, which remains a mystery to this day.Despite the fact that something is a mystery, we can still deduce some information about it.We can also get rid of certain erroneous notions about Jesus that we may have.

God is one, and has no wife

When it comes to regular human relationships, a son has a father, but a son cannot be the father himself.They are two distinct individuals.A person’s father is a requirement, as is the need of having a mother.

That is a normal part of human existence.Jesus is referred to as the ″Son of God″ in several passages in the Bible, including Matthew 4:5, 14:33, Mark 1:1, and John 1:34.As a result, if we examine Jesus from a human standpoint, we may infer that God had a woman who gave birth to Jesus.

Mary is a human, not part of the trinity

However, there is no reference of ″God the Mother″ or anything else concerning God having a wife in the Bible at any point.Mary, a human woman, was the mother of Jesus, who was born after she miraculously became pregnant without having sexual relations with anybody.The ancient world is full of myths of gods having sexual relations with human women; nevertheless, the Bible never mentions such a thing.

Mary was simply Jesus’ mother in the sense that she gave birth to him.She was not his biological mother.God the Father did not descend from heaven and engage in sexual relations with Mary.God the Father, God the Son, and Mary are not the three persons who make up the Trinity.There are no numerous gods in existence.

There is only one God in the universe.

God is three in one…. but not three gods

But, if there is only one God, how can He have a son who is also God, given that there is only one God?As long as there has been a relationship between ″God the Father″ and ″Jesus the Son of God,″ the Bible has been speaking of a relationship that has always been…inside God himself.

God is one person, yet He is also three individuals at the same time.Because this is difficult to comprehend, scholars and religious leaders have battled to make sense of what they have discovered in the Bible.We know that there is a God the Father, a God the Son (Jesus), and a God the Holy Spirit, but we do not know who they are.However, the Bible is unequivocal in its assertion that there is only one God.″There is only one LORD our God, there is only one LORD.″ (See Deuteronomy 6:4 for further information).

God and Jesus have ALWAYS been considered Father and Son by the Jewish people.
The key to seeing Jesus as God and the Son of God is to recognize that 1) God has always existed and 2) Jesus is the Son of God.
2) The Father has always been and will always be the Father.
3) The Son has always been and will continue to be the Son.

Who came first, Father or Son? Neither!

The majority of the time in human relationships, a guy is unmarried prior to becoming a father.Nobody is born into the role of a parent.God the Father, on the other hand, has always been a father to the Son.

Because they are one, they have always been in close proximity to one another.″In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,″ according to the Bible.He was there with God from the beginning″ (John 1:1-2).The phrase ″the Word″ refers to Jesus in these texts.They have always been in a relationship.

Jesus is the Son of God since always

Consider the following scenario: two books are placed on a table.The books are stacked one on top of the other.If you were to assume that one book was placed on the table first, and then another book was placed on top of it, you would be correct.

Think at it this way: suppose those two volumes had always been there on the table since the beginning of time.There has never been a period when those two novels were not in that position.However, contrary to popular belief, one book came first and the other came second in the order of publication.God the Father and God the Son are similar in this regard, as well.Human reasoning dictates that a parent comes first and the son comes second in the evolutionary hierarchy.

Because they are one, God the Father and God the Son have always existed in the same place at the same time.
Given that we employ the terms ″Father″ and ″Son,″ it appears as though one of them must have come before.
However, this is not the case.
And that is a puzzle to me.

What we do know… and don’t know

The key to comprehending the Bible is to take a look at all of the material included inside it and find out how it all works together as a whole.Because God is so much more than we are and our comprehension, not everything we discover in the Bible makes sense in our context.Therefore, it is a conundrum as to how Jesus can be both God and the Son of God at the same time, as described above.

Our knowledge is based on the fact that there is only one God, and that Jesus is God, as is the Father, as is the Holy Spirit, and as is the Holy Spirit.We’re baffled as to how this is possible.But, do we have to answer all of the riddles before we may have confidence in the one real God, who reveals Himself to us through Jesus?

How Can Jesus be Son of God, Son of Man, and God at the Same Time?

I’m delighted that you inquired!Jesus is referred to be the ″Son of God.″ There are more than 40 occurrences of the phrase ″Son of God″ in the Bible, with all but one of those occurrences being in the New Testament.Every time the phrase ″Son of God″ appears in the New Testament, it is a reference to Jesus.

It is a term that emphasizes His preeminence, holiness, and closeness to God the Father, among other things.Because Jesus addressed God as His Father, the Pharisees were motivated primarily to assassinate Him, as I’ve already discussed in other writings (see Jesus is God).The Gospel of John 10:25–30 (HCSB) 25 ″I told you, and you don’t believe me,″ Jesus responded to their questions.″The actions that I perform in My Father’s name bear witness to My existence.You, on the other hand, do not believe because you are not one of My flock.

27 My sheep recognize My voice, know that I am their shepherd, and follow Me.
28 I grant them eternal life, and they will never perish—neither in this world or the next!
No one will be able to pry them from my grasp.
29 All things are subordinate to the will of my Father, who has given them to Me.
No one will ever be able to pry them from the Father’s grasp.30 It is I who am one with the Father.″ Jews leaders sought to assassinate him because he claimed to be God’s son, therefore claiming to be on an equal footing with Him.

You’re stoning Me for which of these works, exactly?
33 ″We are not stoning You for a good deed,″ the Jews said, ″but for blasphemy, since You—as a man—declare yourself to be God,″ they continued.
34 ″Isn’t it stated in your scripture, as I said, that you are gods?″ Jesus asked them in response.
35 In light of the fact that He referred to people who received the word of God as ″gods″—and the Scripture cannot be broken—36 do you say, ″You are blaspheming″ the One whom the Father chose and sent into the world simply because I stated, ″I am the Son of God″?
After then, the issue becomes, ″How does He manage to be both parent and son?″ Another occasion, in the midst of Jewish religious elders, Jesus stated something similar to this.

When taken in context, it is apparent that Jesus’ remarks about the Father do not in any way cast doubt on the fact that He is God, because He makes claims that only God has the authority to make (See Jesus Is God He Has Attributes That Only God Has).The term ″Son of God″ does not imply that Jesus is God’s biological son in the traditional sense.In addition, it does not imply that the son is less than or inferior to his father.

In the original languages, according to scholars, the word ″Son of God″ alludes to a resemblance or to someone who is ″of the same order.″ That indicates that when Jesus referred to Himself as the Son of God, he was referring to the fact that He had the same divine nature as God.To put it another way, Jesus possesses the ″DNA of God.″ A human son has the same DNA as his father, and while they are two completely different persons, they are both males.The DNA of Jesus’ Father means that they are both God, and there is only one God, which is why they are both God in the case of Jesus.I’m sure you get the image.Professor Peter Kreeft, a former philosophy professor at Boston College and The King’s College in London, provides an explanation of his position.

As a result, the Son of God is equal to God.

¹ Jesus is known as the ″Son of Man.″ Following on from my previous statement, which said that Jesus is both the ″Son of God″ and the ″God,″ to now state that He is also the ″Son of Man″ appears to be a contradiction, doesn’t it?
However, there is absolutely no conflict.
The Gospels show that Jesus referred to Himself as ″Son of Man″ more than 70 times throughout His public ministry.
The title ″Son of Man″ is one of Jesus’ favorite titles for himself.
He is the only one who has ever used this title in this context.
He utilized it to draw attention to His humanity.

His disciples and others never used it when addressing or talking about Him, and it is unlikely that they ever will.Whenever He inquired of His followers as to who they said He was, He referred to Himself as the ″Son of Man:″ Matthew 16:13 (KJV) (HCSB) 13 While visiting the district of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus questioned His followers, ″Who do people claim that the Son of Man is?″ When Jesus arrived in the region, He inquired, ″Who do people say that the Son of Man is?″ The Messiah would be a male, according to tradition.Jeremiah 23:5-6 (NASB) (HCSB) 5 ″The days are drawing near,″ declares the LORD, ″when I will raise up a Righteous Branch of David from the ashes of Jerusalem.″ He will rule with wisdom as king, and he will uphold the principles of justice and righteousness throughout the kingdom.6 Judah will be rescued, and Israel will be able to live in peace under His reign.Yahweh Our Righteousness is the name that shall be given to Him.

Daniel 7:13-14 (HCSB)13 I continued to watch in the night visions, and I saw One who seemed like a son of man approaching with the clouds of heaven, and I fell to the ground.
He made his way up to the Ancient of Days and was led in front of Him.

His dominion is an immortal dominion that will never be destroyed, and His kingdom is a kingdom that will never be destroyed too.

Matthew 16:16-18 (Higher Christian Standard Bible)16 ″You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!″ Simon Peter said in response.17 ″Simon son of Jonah, you are lucky because it was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you, but My Father in heaven,″ Jesus said.18 In addition, I declare in your presence that you are Peter, and that on this rock I will build My church, and that the armies of Hades will be unable to destroy it.Matthew 26:62-64 (Higher Christian Standard Bible)62 ″Don’t you have an explanation to what these guys are testifying against You?″ the high priest demanded of Him as he rose up and addressed him.63 But Jesus remained deafeningly silent.He responded with a challenge from the high priest: ″By the living God, I put you under oath: tell us whether You are the Messiah, the Son of God!″ 64 ″You’ve stated it,″ Jesus informed him after hearing him out.

I promise you that in the future, you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, descending on the clouds of heaven.″ The religious leaders were enraged by this comment because it implied that He was claiming to be the Messiah.
He was both heavenly and human at the same time.
Although the Bible does not specify the specific meaning of the term ″Son of Man,″ it is possible that it refers to the fact that Jesus was fully human in every way.
He left His heavenly abode and came to dwell among mortals in the form of the perfect human person, leaving behind everything He knew and loved.
It appears that by employing the term ″Son of Man,″ Jesus was attempting to communicate the reality that He was a fully human being.
2:6-8 (HCSB)6 who, although dwelling in the form of God, did not see His equality with God as something that might be used for His personal gain.

7 As an alternative, He emptied Himself by taking on the shape of a slave and adopting the appearance of mankind.As soon as He took on human flesh and took on His outward form,8 He humbled Himself by becoming submissive to the point of dying—even death on a cross—in order to save us.Galatians 4:4-7 (Galatians 4:4–7) (HCSB) 4 When the time was right, God sent His Son, who was born of a woman and born under the law,5 to redeem those who were under the law, allowing us to be adopted as sons.

″Abba, Father!″ the Spirit of God’s Son has entered our hearts because you are sons, and God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, ″Abba, Father!″ 7 As a result, you are no longer a slave but rather a son, and if a son, then you are an heir by the grace of God.
As a man, he fulfilled the Law of Moses and accomplished what no other human being had been able to accomplish before him.
He associated with the people He had come to help because He was the ″Son of Man.″ 5:17 (Matthew 5:17) (HCSB) 17 ″Do not make the mistake of believing that I have come to destroy the Law or the Prophets.
I did not come to destroy, but rather to bring about fulfillment.
He had to support the law in everything he said and did in order to meet the law’s requirements, and he had to do so as a man in order to do so.
As a man, He demonstrated the holy, spiritual purpose of God’s law, both in the letter of the law and in the intent of the heart of those who followed it.

The ″Son of Man″ pardoned sin, and only God has the authority to do soMark 2:10-12 (HCSB)10 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins,″ He informed the paralytic, ″I tell you this so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.″ 11 – ″I command you to get up, take up your mat, and return home.″ 12 He immediately got to his feet, grabbed up the mat, and walked out in front of the entire group.
In response, they were all amazed and thanked God, exclaiming, ″We have never seen anything like this before!″ He came in the persona of the ″Son of Man″ for a cause.

The ″Son of Man″ will be elevated to a higher position.
Matthew 25:31 (Hebrew Classical Standard Bible)31 ‘When the Son of Man appears in His majesty, with all of the angels accompanying Him, He will sit on the throne of His glory,’ says the prophet.
Yes, Jesus is the Son of God.

Despite the fact that Jesus humbled Himself and took on the shape of a man, walking among His creation for thirty-three years in the flesh, He was and continues to be God.
1 Timothy 3:16 (New International Version) (NKJV) 16 God’s glory is certainly revealed in the fact that He appeared in the flesh, was justified by His Spirit and appeared to angels before preaching to the Gentiles, was accepted by the world, and was exalted to the highest place in heaven.
