The Real Truth About the Shepherds on That First Christmas Night

2. Luke 2:11 (NIV) On this particular night, the shepherds were out and about, keeping an eye on their flocks of sheep and safeguarding them from predators like they would on any other night of the year.
3. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, the angels of heaven arrived and announced the greatest news in the history of news: the birth of Jesus Christ!
4. According to popular belief, the shepherds were impoverished, smelly, and ragamuffin.
5. However, like with many stories, they might get distorted through time as a result of cultural influences.
6. Yes, they were smelly and possibly a little untidy, but they were not the destitute, country-bumpkin farmers eking out a livelihood as we’ve always been told they were.

The truth is that they were far further up the social ladder than that.So, who were these shepherds in the first place?If they weren’t the poorest of the poor, and hence uniquely selected by God as a result, then why these particular individuals?

Following this is the concept that Jesus came to these impoverished shepherds because it was God’s will for him to appear to ″the least of these,″ which means ″the least of them.″ Because it was the disadvantaged with whom Jesus was most concerned, it was believed that by coming to them first, Jesus was signaling His desire to reach the have-nots of society before appearing before any authority.That is, to a certain extent, correct.Jesus, of course, had (and continues to have) a love for individuals who are despondent and in pain, as well as for everyone else.

These shepherds, on the other hand, were not outcasts from society.Rather than being shepherds, the shepherds we read about in Luke were really doing Temple tasks, and the only people who were permitted to conduct Temple responsibilities were priests.It is only of the Mishnah that we know they were priests.

The Mishnah is a collection of papers that preserve oral traditions that ruled the Jewish people during the period of the Pharisees.The Mishnah is divided into three sections: One of its restrictions declares that it ″expressly restricts the keeping of sheep throughout the country of Israel, with the exception of the wilderness — and the only animals permitted to be maintained would be those used for Temple ceremonies″ (Bab K.7:7; 80a).Unlike the ordinary shepherds, these shepherds were in the fields near Bethlehem rather than out in the desert where the sheep were kept.As a result, they had to have been priests.For what reason would priests be assigned to lowly shepherding responsibilities for the Temple?This is due to the fact that the sheep were scheduled to be sacrificed during the Passover celebration.

Before the lambs were slaughtered, it was the priests’ responsibility to ensure that they were free of blemishes and fully unhurt.In another passage from the Mishnah, it is said that the Messiah would be revealed from the Migdal Eder, which translates as ″tower of the sheep.″ It was a real tower that existed just outside of town, within the grounds of the Temple priests’ compound.You may think of it as a sort of observation tower.

It was the priest’s responsibility to remain in the Migdal Eder throughout the night.In light of the tower’s height, the shepherd priest was responsible for ″watching over the sheep by night,″ while the other shepherds were responsible for ″watching over the flock by day.″ (Isn’t it wonderful how such a small word can convey such a great deal of significance in the Bible?) Given that the shepherds were in the fields on a consistent basis, they were most certainly filthy, but they were not a group of impoverished shepherds.Their dedication to the church’s leaders, the Pharisees, resulted in an increase in social standing.No matter how you look at it, they were still shepherds in their hearts and minds.And it was at that moment that the angel appeared, bearing some very excellent news.

Far if the notion that the angels appeared initially to impoverished, illiterate rural shepherds makes a great deal of sense, the truth is even more compelling.As you can see, these priests were involved in the church’s practice of animal sacrifices.Among other things, it was their responsibility to prepare the sheep for the Passover holiday and other Jewish festivities.Then, seemingly out of nowhere, an angel from heaven appears to them, interrupting the silence of the night and delivering an update to Moses’ Law.While it is likely that the shepherds were unaware of what was taking place, the angel was hand-delivering a message to them, informing them that the time for animal sacrifice was drawing to a close, and they were the first to find out.

″For there is born to you today, in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord,″ the Bible says.Luke 2:11 (NIV) He was finally born as the promised Messiah, the Savior of the world, whom the priests had been hearing about from the prophets for hundreds of years.It was no longer essential to provide animal sacrifices.Now, via His death and resurrection, Jesus would prove to be the ultimate and perfect sacrifice, paying the price for man’s sin once and for all.It’s no surprise that these priests rushed ″with haste″ (v.16) to see the kid the angel had mentioned.I’m sure you’d be running as well, wouldn’t you?

The size of their eyes and the length of their jaws must have fallen when they saw a baby laying in a feeding trough, wrapped in a swaddling cloth, exactly as the angel had said.Regarding the swaddling cloths, just a little aside…These weren’t just any old clothes.The rags Mary and Joseph used were neither rags Mary and Joseph brought from home or rags they happened to discover in the stable.

• These weren’t different from the cloths used by the church — notably, the shepherd priests — to keep the lambs clean and free of blemishes while the lambs were being readied for the offering.
• It is unclear where Mary and Joseph obtained the cloths, but theologians assume that they came from the priest Zacharias, whose wife, Elizabeth, is Mary’s cousin, and that they were given to them by Elizabeth.
• Keeping in mind that Mary had resided in their home for three months while she was pregnant, it’s possible that the clothes were a type of baby shower present.
• As a result, the shepherds discovered baby Jesus, who had been wrapped in priestly robes.
• This is exactly what I’m looking for.
• As the Lamb of God (John 1:29) and the great High Priest, it is only fair that He should be slaughtered like a lamb for the salvation of all people at some point in the future.

3. We don’t have to be separated from Him again since He came to earth to be the perfect Lamb, without blemish or sin.

5. In his book, The Message, author Eugene Peterson writes that the shepherds ″let free, worshiping and worshipping God,″ as he describes it.
6. Knowing that the Savior of the world has arrived should inspire all of us to express our joy in His presence.

Angels rejoice birth of Jesus

1. Then, at nightfall, there were shepherds out in the field, keeping an eye on their sheep.
2. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shined around them, and they were overwhelmed with awe and awed them further.

So they didn’t worry when the angel replied, ″Fear not, for lo, I bring you good news of great pleasure that will be shared by the entire nation.″ Because on this day in the city of David, a Savior has been born to you, and his name is Christ the Lord.’″ (See Luke 1:8-11 for more information.) At long last, the day arrived when Jesus was born in human form as a baby, to the great joy of the angels.
4. Consider for a moment what took place in heaven nine months ago this year.
5. Everything was perfect in paradise; the angels sang and worshiped around Jesus’ throne, and suddenly Jesus vanished.
6. He vanished without a trace.

The angels did not see him for a period of nine complete months.Jesus was no longer in the presence of the Father.Just image what it was like to be in that situation.

• From the beginning of the existence of angels, Jesus had always been visible to them; now he was no longer visible to them at all.
• What happened to him?
• He was growing inside Mary’s belly.
• It took several months before Jesus appeared once more.
• As a baby, he was discovered in human form ″wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger;″ he was born in the likeness of men and was raised as one of them.

• As soon as the angel informed the shepherds of the birth of Jesus, the angel was joined by an army of angels, who sang praises to God while proclaiming, ″Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those whom he pleases!″ We know very little about the psychological composition of angels, and we know much less about what offers them immense satisfaction, other from the accomplishment of God’s purpose.
• Perhaps they take comfort in the knowledge that Jesus came to earth to accomplish what he did in heaven — establish his kingdom and bring peace to all who put their trust in him.
• In an old Christmas song, the need for a coming Savior is identified, as well as the promise of a coming Savior: ″O come, longing of nations, tie all peoples in one heart and soul; make envy, hatred and quarrels end; fill the whole earth with the peace of heaven.″ Rejoice!

• ″Emmanuel will come to thee, O Israel!″ says the prophet.

• As their stories progress, every relevant ingredient comes in its correct location at the appropriate time.
• Considering that Matthew and Luke each relate a separate aspect of the tale, this is even more astonishing!
• The Nativity tale opens with an angelic pronouncement made within the temple’s Holy Place to a priest who had just finished praying for that precise occurrence on behalf of his people when the story begins.
• It comes to a close with the disclosure of Herod’s terrible plans for the life of the Christ child.
• As we follow the tale, we see the skies opened to priests and laypeople, to men and women, to the young and the old, to the powerful and the lowly.

• In this story, which is the most beautiful story that has ever been told, we are all asked to be crucial witnesses.

Gabriel

1. The first New Testament witness to the birth of Christ was Gabriel, a messenger from the presence of God who appeared to Mary and Joseph at the time of the birth of Jesus.
2. This messenger made his first appearance in the temple to Zacharias, a devout priest of the Aaronic order who was performing a ritual activity on behalf of his nation—burning incense on the altar within the Holy Place—which was an appropriate setting for him to make his debut.
3. Zacharias represented the collective trust of the people of Israel in carrying out his responsibilities.
4. They were praying for an everlasting rescue from all their adversaries at the hands of their prophesied Messiah, and he was praying on their behalf.
5. The rising of the incense flames represented the ascension of that unified prayer.
6. As Zacharias prayed, his fellow priests and everyone else within the temple’s walls joined their voices in agreement with his plea.

The Lord came to Zacharias in response to Israel’s request, standing on the right side of the altar of incense and identified himself as Gabriel, one who was ″in the presence of God,″ according to the Bible (Luke 1:11, 19).As revealed by contemporary revelation, Gabriel was known on earth as Noah, and he ″stands next in power to Adam in the Priesthood″ (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, page 157).He also bears the keys to ″the restoration of all things,″ as stated in D&C 27:6–7.

• The keys in Gabriel’s possession transformed him into an Elias, one who prepared the way before the Lord.
• The announcement of the birth of the earthly Elias—John the Baptist—who would pave the way for the Messiah couldn’t have been more suitable.

Zacharias

1. Who was this Zacharias, to whom Gabriel appeared in a dream or vision?
2. He and his wife, Elisabeth, were both counted among the ″righteous and holy″ (Alma 13:26), as was their father.
3. Zacharias was a descendant of Abia, whose name literally translated means ″Jehovah’s remembrance.″ Elizabeth was a descendant of priests (see Luke 1:5), and her name signified ″consecrated to God,″ just as Zacharias’s father had been.
4. This aristocratic couple had been promised a child who would grow up to be the earthly precursor of the coming of the Messiah.
5. In response to Zacharias’ refusal to trust Gabriel’s prophetic promise, he was given the sign that he would be ″unable to speak until the day when these things will be completed″ (Luke 1:20).
6. He stayed deafeningly silent until ″Elisabeth’s full time had come for her to be born.″ As a result of this, Zacharias’s ″tongue was opened,″ and he was able to bear witness to the divine mission of his newborn son, proclaiming that he would ″go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways.″ The news of these supernatural happenings was ″broadcast throughout…
