ENEMIES Pontius Pilate – The governor of Judea has a dream in which he observes the events of Jesus’ crucifixion from beginning to end, and he awakens to find himself in exactly that circumstance
In the program, Caiaphas is a high priest who regards Jesus as a threat to the nation. He is also one of the primary villains.
Annas – The other primary adversary of the drama, Annas is a fellow priest who works with Caiaphas and is led by Caiaphas to believe that Jesus is a danger to his authority.
Jesus’ adversary, King Herod, the King of Galilee, is enraged by the idea that Jesus is being equated to royalty. When it comes to this specific character, there is room for theatrical license. For example, in the UK Arena Tour, Herod was designed to be a TV talk show presenter in the vein of Jeremy Kyle, who played the role of King Herod. (This is more than likely a tribute to Chris Moyles’s previous radio DJ work.) In stark contrast, the Open Air Theatre Superstar production depicted Herod in a very campy manner, almost as if he were appearing in a futuristic music video, which was quite amusing. For example, the performers in each show were outfitted in a gold cloak and used extensive sparkly makeup to represent their high social standing and to distinguish themselves from the rest of the group.
