‘Then the Virgin Mary brought roughly a pint of pure nard, a costly perfume, and poured it on Jesus’ feet, wiping his feet with her hair.’ Moreover, the scent of the perfume enveloped the entire home (John 12:3). A scene of rich hospitality and personal fellowship has been set in the aftermath of Lazarus’ resurrection, as Jesus, Mary, Martha, and Lazarus have gathered to celebrate Lazarus’ resurrection (John 12:1-11). With Jesus at the table, Lazarus is resting. In true Martha fashion, she is putting dinner on the table and cleaning up after herself.

Afterwards, Mary makes her public display of love to Jesus, lavishing a full pint of beautiful perfume on his feet and defying rules of decorum by unfurling her hair to clean them.

They are now surrounded by the fragrance of a fine perfume, thanks to Lazarus’s intervention.

There is nothing here that like a grudging devotion to a distant divinity or a pleasant but half-hearted participation in traditional religious rites and rites and ceremonies.

1. We can already hear God’s appeal to everyone of us, just a few verses into the account, to follow Mary’s example and to become disciples who are devoted to Jesus to the fullest extent.

7. As a pair, they offer as strikingly different representations of Jesus’ own teaching that “where your wealth is, there will also be your heart” (Matt.
8. As we reflect on Jesus’ condemnation of Judas, we are reminded that real discipleship is about turning away from anything that is selfish, self-centered, and cold-hearted.

This means that we must fight the desire to cast down our noses at acts of devotion that seem unusual, strange, or over the top to our own pompous selves In this section, many sermons on this incident come to a halt, emphasizing the appeal to complete commitment to Jesus and addressing the haughty hostility to his message.

For those of us who follow Jesus, it is tempting to be drawn in by a vision of the Christian life that is filled with warm hospitality and even extravagant worship, but that leaves no real room in it for a suffering and dying Lord, or for the way of life that Jesus calls us to live by dying to ourselves.

• This would be a mistake.
• On his route to the crucifixion and the grave, we are not expected to shower funeral perfume at the feet of a Savior, to be sure.
• Although we are presented with an extravagant and modest method of devotion, the reality that the divine plan of redemption did not come at Easter until after Jesus’ suffering, death, and burial nevertheless has a tremendous impact on the way we should devote ourselves.
