What Does Jesus Say About Hypocrites

What does the Bible say about hypocrisy?

QuestionAnswer In its most basic definition, “hypocrisy” refers to the act of pretending to believe something while acting in a contrary manner. The name is derived from the Greek term for “actor,” which literally translates as “one who wears a mask.” In other words, it refers to someone who pretends to be someone or something that he or she is not. Hypocrisy is defined as a sin in the Bible. In its most basic form, hypocrisy may be defined as the act of expressing a conviction in something while then acting in a manner that is inconsistent with that belief, or the act of looking down on others while we ourselves are lacking.

On the exterior, a hypocrite may appear to be righteous, but this is really a façade.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus addressed the opposite type of hypocrisy: “Why do you gaze at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye but pay no notice to the plank in your own eye?” Is it possible to tell your brother, “Please allow me to remove the speck from your eye,” while you have a plank in your own eye all of the time?

  • In this passage, Jesus is not instructing against discernment or the assistance of others in overcoming sin; rather, He is warning us not to be so self-righteous and persuaded of our own goodness that we condemn others from a position of self-righteousness.
  • Romans 2:1).
  • Their knowledge of the Scriptures and fervor for observing every word of the Law were well-known among their peers (Acts 26:5).
  • Apart from that, they showed little sympathy for one another and were frequently too expressive of their so-called spirituality in order to get attention (Matthew 23:5–7; Luke 18:11).
  • Jesus made it apparent that the problem was not with the Law itself, but with the way the Pharisees were putting it into practice (Matthew 23:2-3).
  • Lecturing that drinking is a sin, for example, does not constitute hypocrisy unless the person who is teaching against drunkenness also gets drunk every weekend, in which case it is hypocritical.
  • We are to “detest what is wicked” and “cling to what is good,” according to the Bible (Romans 12:9).

Everything we do should be in accordance with our beliefs and our identity as followers of Christ. Play-acting is intended for use on a stage rather than in real life. Go back to the page with all of the Bible questions. When it comes to hypocrisy, what does the Bible have to say?

Hypocrites, you can distinguish the face of the sky and the face of the earth; but how come you are unable to perceive the face of time?

What does the Bible say about Hypocrites?

Was there anything in the Bible that talked about hypocrisy and hypocrites? To be honest, quite a bit, to be honest. Generally speaking, a hypocrite is someone who claims to hold qualities, moral or religious convictions, or ideals that they do not truly possess in their actual lives. Someone who is guilty of hypocrisy will profess to believe one thing while their behaviors demonstrate that they do not believe it. Hypocrites are nothing new in the world. Considering how many times the phrases hypocrisy and hypocrite appear in the Bible, it is clear that these types of individuals were commonplace in Biblical times.

Let’s take a look at God’s word and see what we can learn.

You Might Be A Hypocrite If

There’s nothing wrong with helping the less fortunate, but if you do it just for the purpose of boasting to others about your generosity, you may be considered a hypocritical Christian. (6:2) (Matthew 6:2) For this reason, when you donate to the poor, do not broadcast it with trumpets in the synagogues and on the streets, as hypocrites do to be recognized by others. They have, I swear to you, got their full and complete recompense.

You pray loud in front of people just to be seen and heard

Among order to pray effectively, there will be occasions when we must be in a group of people, such as prayer sessions and church services. It is beneficial to offer sincere prayers to God during these trying moments. If you pray just for the sake of being seen by others, you may be considered a Christian hypocrite. Matthew 6:5 (Matthew 6:5) “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who like praying while standing in synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. They have, I swear to you, got their full and complete recompense.

You make it obvious you are fasting

If you go to great lengths to inform others that you are participating in a spiritual fast, you may be considered a hypocritical Christian. (Matthew 6:16; Luke 6:16) The hypocrites strive to seem wretched and untidy so that people would praise them for their fasting. “And when you fast, don’t make it conspicuous, as the hypocrites do.” Telling the truth, that is the only thing they will ever receive as a reward. NLT

Your trying to fix your brothers problems before you fix your own

When you are blind to the idea that you have problems of your own that need to be addressed, but are absorbed with the task of completing your fellow Church members, you may be considered a Christian hypocrite.

Matthew 7:5 (Matthew 7:5) If you want to see clearly, you must first remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will be able to see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

Get Rid Of The Hypocrisy

There were people in the Bible, just as there are now, who worshipped God with their lips but whose souls were far away from him in their hearts (Mathew 15:7-9). Though they appeared to be upright on the surface, they were filled with hypocrisy and evil on the inside, as evidenced by their actions (Mathew 23:27-29). These individuals have been ordered to rid themselves of their hypocritical tendencies (1 Peter 2:1).

The Church Is Full Of Hypocrites

Many people’s list of reasons why they won’t attend to church is topped by their belief that the Church is full of hypocrites, which they believe is unfounded. Yes, there is some hypocrisy in Christianity, as is to be anticipated. A congregation is made up of individuals. There will always be a percentage of people who are not who they claim to be when there are others engaged in the process. It is preferable to attend church with hypocrites than than be thrown into hell with them, as one preacher put it.

The Bible says (Matthew 24:51) He will rip him to pieces and cast him into the company of hypocrites, where he will wail and gnash his teeth in despair.

What Does Jesus Mean by Hypocrisy? It’s Deeper than You Think

According to the Gospel reading from Ash Wednesday’s Mass, Jesus provides a lengthy discourse on the subject of hypocrisy. You may find it at the following link: Hypocrisy is addressed in Matthew 6. In the modern day, we have tended to simplify the concept of hypocrisy to the concept of duplicity or deception. Modern definition of a hypocrite is someone who says one thing but does another, someone who is deceptive, someone who is inconsistent or someone who is feigning sincerity. Jesus’ teaching on hypocrisy does not rule out this possibility, but it is significantly more comprehensive.

  • Although they pose as something they are not in reality, they are only playing a part.
  • when the audience has left), they revert to their genuine selves, which are completely different from the person they appeared to be.
  • Hypocrisy is defined as follows: In effect, Jesus portrays hypocrisy as the tragic situation of a person who puts himself to the status of an actor on a stage because he does not know God the Father as he does in the Bible.
  • They determine their dignity and value not by looking to God (who is, in reality, a stranger to them), but by looking to what other human beings think about themselves.
  • They are willing to take on a variety of roles and don a variety of masks in order to provide the audience with what they desire.
  • It’s important to note how Jesus explains the core of hypocrisy: “Take care not to conduct virtuous actions in order for people to see them,” Jesus instructed his disciples.
  • This is the core of hypocrisy – As a result, the desire of such a person is to be noticed.

So they participate in some action “in order for people to be aware of their presence” It is undeniable that the outcome will be extremely tragic.

Their inner core, or deepest self, is suppressed and replaced by the needs of other people in their lives.

The frantic desire for praise from others is taken to extremes by many, to the point of self-destruction.

Some students will drop out of school, join gangs, and engage in criminal activity.

Others will tattoo and pierce their bodies, engage in sexual activity before to marriage, and engage in a variety of other dangerous behaviors.

As if they were performers onstage, they scurry to fill these roles and wait for the praise and recognition that they so desperately desire.

Christians will conceal their religious beliefs by adopting the persona of a secular contemporary in order to get acceptance.

The fact that our current conception of hypocrisy as duplicity, while inadequate, does not represent a mistake is also obvious.

Because the audience changes, and he must evolve in response to that change.

Because the hypocrite’s (actor’s) primary purpose is to be noticed and get acceptance, the answer must alter if the group changes its mind.

He doesn’t have a core anymore; his identity is found outside of himself in whatever the audience deems necessary in order to give him their approval.

Jesus is also quite explicit in this regard.

Many people’s lives are blighted by the fact that they do not know their heavenly Father.

Many people believe that God is, at most, a kind stranger who oversees the cosmos, but that he is located in some distant heaven and that their interactions with him are hazy and abstract.

In reality, he is a complete stranger.

Your heavenly Father, who observes everything in secret, will reward you for your prayers.

In other words, the ultimate objective in life and the cure for hypocrisy is that it is enough that Your heavenly Father is aware of what you are up to in your daily activities.

When we start experiencing God the Father’s love for us, his providence, and his good will toward us on a deeper level, we become less concerned with what others think of us.

Take note, as well, of the connection that Jesus establishes.

He is more than just the Father, either.

Moving away from hypocrisy is an ongoing process.

More than anything, we are the authentic selves that God has created us to be, rather than the actor (the hypocrite).

We’re not as desperate for their approval as we once were.

We still groom ourselves and behave in a professional manner, but we are not preoccupied with earning the approval of others.

As a result, hypocrisy, at least in the sense that Jesus teaches it here, is a more complex concept than we are accustomed to thinking about today.

Regarding this tragic and poignant problem, Jesus offers an extremely potent and personally meaningful resolution that involves knowing “your heavenly Father” and experiencing his love for you. Thank you, Jesus, for everything!

God Hates Hypocrisy

God is a hater. Those are words that may be unfamiliar to us. They may come across as inappropriate. However, a God who loves what is good must also despise what is wicked. The God who cherishes what brings glory to his name must loathe what brings shame to his name. In order for a God to love what blesses his people, he must despise what damages them. It couldn’t possibly be any other way, and we wouldn’t want it any other way, either! We’ve been looking at what God despises over the course of a few articles, analyzing texts that use terms like “hatred,” “abomination,” and “detestable.” As we’ve seen, God despises idolatry, sexual immorality, and injustice in all of their forms.

God Hates Hypocrisy

God is enraged by hypocrisy. To be more specific, he despises it when people go through the motions of worship and appear to bring him their finest while actually bringing him their second-rate offerings. You shall not sacrifice to the LORD your God an ox or a sheep that has a defect of any kind, because that is an abomination in the sight of the LORD your God (Deuteronomy 17:1). This concept is reiterated in Isaiah 61:8, which reads, ” “Because I, the LORD, love justice; I despise theft and evil; I will faithfully pay them their rightful compensation, and I will establish an eternal covenant with them,” declares the LORD.

The incense, which I consider to be an abomination, should not be brought any more.

Your new moons and scheduled feasts are abominations to my spirit; they have become a burden to me, and I have grown tired of carrying them.” (See also Isaiah 1:13-14.) God has absolutely no interest in such forms of devotion.

In other words, “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause” “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes” (16-17).

Why God Hates Hypocrisy

In God’s opinion, hypocrisy is detestable because hypocrisy abuses religion by taking use of its laws and decrees for one’s own self-promotion. Hedonists desire religion—even the Christian faith—only for the benefits that it provides them in their lives. They are unable to really turn their hearts toward God and to do good to God’s children. It’s critical to grasp what hypocrisy is not and what it is. Rather than the discrepancy between what we are and what we wish to be, hypocrisy is the disparity between what we are and what we wish to be.

Hypocrisy is defined as “being externally righteous to others while actually being full of uncleanness and self-indulgence in one’s own life.” This is precisely what causes God’s wrath to be arousing in these Old Testament verses.

The people wish to obey the law’s prescriptions for worship, but solely out of tradition and superstition, and only in order to appear respectable in the eyes of their fellow citizens and neighbors.

To paraphrase DeYoung, “A hypocrite is defined as a Christian who employs the veneer of public virtue to conceal the rot of personal immorality.” His persona is that of the guy who leads a double life, the lady who deceives her friends because she is dressed in church clothing, and the student who proudly answers the questions in Sunday school and then just as happily romps through immorality the rest of the week.” Hypocrisy is, at its core, a form of theatrical religion, in which religion is used for personal profit or to improve one’s reputation.

It is an abomination in the eyes of the Almighty, who sees and understands what is in the heart. Every time someone uses the name of God, his law, or his decrees, it is an affront to the God who is blasphemed.

God’s Judgment on the Hypocrite

The New Testament makes it quite plain that hypocrites will be subjected to God’s most severe judgements. Nowhere else does Jesus express himself in such severe words as he does in Matthew 23, in which he pours forth misery after woe against the religious establishment. “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!” he says six times in succession. “Woe to you, blind guides,” he says at another point, changing his tone a little from the previous time. He criticizes these religious leaders for their lack of sincerity, for turning their religion into a selfish goal, and for blasphemously violating God’s word.

In Romans 2, we see Paul admonishing people against the dangers of hypocrisy.

… However, because of your hard and impenitent heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath, when God’s just judgment will be revealed” (3, 5).

It is those who publicly criticize such evil while privately engaging in it who will bear the brunt of his judgement.

Hope for the Hypocrite

Despite the fact that hypocrisy is an abomination to God and a source of his most severe wrath, there is still hope for the hypocrite. The hypocrite’s only hope is in the person of Jesus Christ. “Do you presume on the riches of his kindness and tolerance and patience, not realizing that God’s compassion is intended to lead you to repentance?” Paul asks in Romans 2:4, warning of the severe consequences of hypocrisy, but also offering a ray of hope. God defers his quick judgment against the hypocrite in order to give him the chance and time to repent of his transgression.

In a hypothetical question to the Scribes and Pharisees some years before this one, Jesus said, “You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you going to avoid being condemned to hell?” By means of his crucifixion, Jesus provided the solution.
