1 O happy day that fixed my choice On Thee, my Savior and my God! Well may this glowing heart rejoice, And tell its raptures all abroad.
Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away! He taught me how to watch and pray, And live rejoicing every day; Happy day, happy day,When Jesus washed my sins away!
2 ’Tis done—the great transaction’s done; I am my Lord’s, and He is mine; He drew me and I followed on, Rejoiced to own the call divine.
Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away! He taught me how to watch and pray, And live rejoicing every day; Happy day, happy day,When Jesus washed my sins away!
3 Now rest, my long-divided heart, Fixed on this blissful center, rest; Here have I found a nobler part, Here heav’nly pleasures fill my breast.
Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away! He taught me how to watch and pray, And live rejoicing every day; Happy day, happy day,When Jesus washed my sins away!
4 High heav’n that hears the solemn vow, That vow renewed shall daily hear! Till in life’s latest hour I bow, And bless, in death, a bond so dear.
Happy day, happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away! He taught me how to watch and pray, And live rejoicing every day; Happy day, happy day,When Jesus washed my sins away!

Happy day, When Jesus washed my sins away! by Martha Reed

O glorious day, when I made my decision to follow Thee, my Savior and my God! May this glistening heart be filled with joy, and may it spread its ecstasy across the world. When Jesus took away my sins, it was a wonderful day indeed! He taught me how to observe and pray, as well as how to live joyfully every day: “Wonderful day, happy day, when Jesus cleansed my sins away!” O joyful tie that binds my vows to Him Who deserves all of my affection! Allow joyful anthems to flood His dwelling, while I make my way to His precious sanctuary.

  • He taught me how to observe and pray, as well as how to live joyfully every day: “Wonderful day, happy day, when Jesus cleansed my sins away!” It’s completed: the monumental deal has been completed!
  • When Jesus took away my sins, it was a wonderful day indeed!
  • When Jesus took away my sins, it was a wonderful day indeed!
  • That pledge reaffirmed shall be heard on a daily basis,Till the last hour of my life I bow,And bless in death a relationship so precious.
  • He taught me how to observe and pray, as well as how to live joyfully every day: “Wonderful day, happy day, when Jesus cleansed my sins away!” Philip Doddridge has written a piece for us.

4 Lie down now, my long-divided heart, and rest, fixed on this lovely center; Here, at last, has been discovered a nobler part, and here, heavenly sensations flood my breasts.

Author:Philip Doddridge

Philip Doddridge (born in London, England, in 1702; died in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1751) was a member of the Nonconformist Church of England (not associated with the Church of England). Its members were frequently the target of racial and ethnic prejudice. Doddridge declined an education offered to him by a wealthy sponsor in order to prepare him for ordination in the Church of England, opting instead to remain in the Non-conformist Church. Pastor of an impoverished parish in Northampton for twenty years, during which time he established an institution for preparing Non-conformist pastors, in which he taught the majority of topics himself.

Despite the fact that Doddridge was suffering from TB at the time, when Lady Huntington, one of his supporters, suggested that he travel to Lisbon for treatment, he is claimed to have said, “I can as well get to paradise from Lisbon as I can from Nort. ” Go to the person’s profile page.

O Happy Day – Lyrics, Hymn Meaning and Story

GodTube’s team of experts “O Happy Day” is a song written in the 18th century that commemorates the covenant with God and redemption found in Jesus of the Non-Conformists at that time period. It contains vivid picture of the joy that its author, Philip Doddridge, experienced as a result of his salvation and God. This hymn, which was made popular by a recording by the Edwin Hawkins Singers, has since become a gospel music staple in the modern era. 1 O joyous day when I made the decision to follow Thee, my Savior and my God!

In the chorus: “Happy day, happy day, When Jesus cleansed away all my sins!” In his teachings, I learned how to observe and pray, as well as how to live each day with joy; joyful day, happy day, when Jesus wiped away my sins.

3 Now, my long-divided heart may rest in peace, fixed on this glorious center rest; here, I have discovered a nobler portion, where heavenly delights flood my breast; now, my long-divided heart can rest in peace.

4 It is high heav’n that hears the solemn pledge, and it is that vow reaffirmed on a daily basis that I kneel, and bless in death a link that is so precious. Writers of songsPhilip Doddridge Public Domain has published this article.

The Story Behind O Happy Day

“O Happy Day” was composed by Philip Doddridge (1702-1751), an English Non-Conformist clergyman, which means that he disagreed with the Church of England’s teachings. “Rejoicing in our Covenant,” as Doddridge originally titled the song, was the inspiration for the title. “It is an engagement with God.” Throughout the song, there are several imagery of the covenant, which was a concept that was particularly significant to the nonconformist and dissenting clergy, and which they would eventually bring with them to New England as part of Puritan theology.

Some believe that Doddridge wrote his hymns as summaries of his sermons in the hopes of assisting the congregation in expressing their reaction to what he was teaching.

Jesus Has a Special Place in My Heart How fortunate we are in having Jesus as our Friend, blessed assurance Nearer My God, I beseech Thee to remain with me.

Be Thou My Vision, O God.

” Oh Happy Day “(1968) “All God’s Children Got Soul”(1969)

A 1967 gospel music adaptation of the 1755 hymn by clergyman Philip Doddridge, ” Oh Happy Day ” is a favorite of many people. It was recorded by theEdwin Hawkins Singers and became a worldwide success in 1969, peaking at No. 4 on the US Singles Chart, No. 1 in France, Germany, and the Netherlands, and No. 2 on the Canadian Singles Chart, UK Singles Chart, and Irish Singles Chart, among other countries and regions. Since then, it has been a staple of gospel music. Initially, a muted piano, drums, and bass accompany lead singerDorothy Combs Morrison on the left-hand stereo channel.

The music is remarkable for its crystal-clear sound, which is especially impressive considering the track’s loud voices and the inexpensive equipment utilized to record them.

Origins

The hymn “Oh, Happy Day,” arranged in the gospel style by Edwin Hawkins, has a long history of popularity. A hymn composed in the mid-18th century (“O joyful day, that established my decision”) by English priest Philip Doddridge (based on Acts 8:35) and set to a 1704 tune byJ. A. Freylinghausen, the song had its start as a choral piece. A new melody, as well as a chorus, was added by Edward F. Rimbault in the mid-19th century, and it became widely used at baptismal and confirmation rituals in the United Kingdom, as well as in America.

A new arrangement of Charles Wesley’s 1740 song ” Jesus, Lover of My Soul” appeared on the B-side of the single, which was composed by Hawkins himself.

Recording

To give the hymn a more gospel feel, Hawkins changed the arrangement. He also included a piano introduction that he claims was inspired by the music of Sérgio Mendes, a Brazilian composer. While recording the song in 1967, lead vocalist Dorothy Morrison incorporated some lyrical improvisations inspired by James Brown, which she claimed “made the song sound even more current.”

Legacy and influence

A “standard” in no time, Hawkins’ arrangement has been recorded by hundreds of musicians and is still in use today. It was listed on theRIAA’s Songs of the Century list, and Hawkins was awarded a Grammy for Best Soul Gospel Performance in 1970 for his performance (performed by the Edwin Hawkins Singers). Parts of the song “Oh Happy Day” are used in live performances and acoustic versions of Nick Cave’s song ” Deanna ” (1988), showing that Cave was inspired by the song. In his 1970 international smash single “My Sweet Lord,” George Harrison noted that the song served as a significant source of inspiration.

Big Momma’s House, Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, David LaChapelle’s 2005 filmRize, Robin Williams’ 2007 movieLicense to Wed, the 2010 biographical film Secretariat (in which the song is played when Secretariat wins the Belmont), and Spike Lee’sBlacKkKlansman are all films in which the song appears.

Spiritualized, a space-rock band from the United Kingdom, performs this song often as the concluding song of their live shows.
