A 1967 gospel music adaptation of the 1755 hymn by clergyman Philip Doddridge, ” Oh Happy Day ” is a favorite of many people. It was recorded by theEdwin Hawkins Singers and became a worldwide success in 1969, peaking at No. 4 on the US Singles Chart, No. 1 in France, Germany, and the Netherlands, and No. 2 on the Canadian Singles Chart, UK Singles Chart, and Irish Singles Chart, among other countries and regions. Since then, it has been a staple of gospel music. Initially, a muted piano, drums, and bass accompany lead singerDorothy Combs Morrison on the left-hand stereo channel.

The music is remarkable for its crystal-clear sound, which is especially impressive considering the track’s loud voices and the inexpensive equipment utilized to record them.

Origins

The hymn “Oh, Happy Day,” arranged in the gospel style by Edwin Hawkins, has a long history of popularity. A hymn composed in the mid-18th century (“O joyful day, that established my decision”) by English priest Philip Doddridge (based on Acts 8:35) and set to a 1704 tune byJ. A. Freylinghausen, the song had its start as a choral piece. A new melody, as well as a chorus, was added by Edward F. Rimbault in the mid-19th century, and it became widely used at baptismal and confirmation rituals in the United Kingdom, as well as in America.

A new arrangement of Charles Wesley’s 1740 song ” Jesus, Lover of My Soul” appeared on the B-side of the single, which was composed by Hawkins himself.

Recording

To give the hymn a more gospel feel, Hawkins changed the arrangement. He also included a piano introduction that he claims was inspired by the music of Sérgio Mendes, a Brazilian composer. While recording the song in 1967, lead vocalist Dorothy Morrison incorporated some lyrical improvisations inspired by James Brown, which she claimed “made the song sound even more current.”

Legacy and influence

A “standard” in no time, Hawkins’ arrangement has been recorded by hundreds of musicians and is still in use today. It was listed on theRIAA’s Songs of the Century list, and Hawkins was awarded a Grammy for Best Soul Gospel Performance in 1970 for his performance (performed by the Edwin Hawkins Singers). Parts of the song “Oh Happy Day” are used in live performances and acoustic versions of Nick Cave’s song ” Deanna ” (1988), showing that Cave was inspired by the song. In his 1970 international smash single “My Sweet Lord,” George Harrison noted that the song served as a significant source of inspiration.

The Story Behind O Happy Day

“O Happy Day” was composed by Philip Doddridge (1702-1751), an English Non-Conformist clergyman, which means that he disagreed with the Church of England’s teachings. “Rejoicing in our Covenant,” as Doddridge originally titled the song, was the inspiration for the title. “It is an engagement with God.” Throughout the song, there are several imagery of the covenant, which was a concept that was particularly significant to the nonconformist and dissenting clergy, and which they would eventually bring with them to New England as part of Puritan theology.

Some believe that Doddridge wrote his hymns as summaries of his sermons in the hopes of assisting the congregation in expressing their reaction to what he was teaching.

Oh Happy Day by The Edwin Hawkins Singers – Songfacts

  • The gospel-tinged songs “Can I Get a Witness” by Marvin Gaye and “People Get Ready” by The Impressions were among the songs with a gospel flavor that reached the top of the pop charts in the 1960s, but “Oh Happy Day” was the first pure gospel song to do so. Based on the Protestant hymn “Oh Happy Day, That Fixed My Choice,” which dates back to 1755 and is included in the standard Baptist hymnal, the popular Latin/soul version of this song was written by Edwin Hawkins, who was working as a pianist at Ephesian Church of God in Christ in Berkeley, California at the time of its recording in the summer of 1968, which was recorded there with a choir and church musicians. The San Francisco Chronicle reported on October 23, 2009, that he explained that “Oh Happy Day” was one of eight arrangements he created for his Northern California State Youth Choir, which was comprised of 46 singers ages 17 to 25, with the goal of selling an album of the songs to raise money for a trip to the National Youth Conference in Washington, D.C. The recordings were rapidly recorded live in church using a two-track tape machine (at the time, the industry standard was eight-track), but the records were not produced in time for the trip because of technical difficulties. It was confirmed that they would be in attendance, and the choir finished second in a singing competition in which they sang two of Hawkins’ arrangements, but not “Oh Happy Day,” which Hawkins stated was “not our favorite song.” Five hundred copies of the record were produced, and one of them ended up in the possession of well-known DJ Abe “Voco” Kesh of KSAN-FM in San Francisco, who placed it on rotation. Others followed, and Buddah Records signed Hawkins to a record deal, allowing the album and the “Oh Happy Day” album to be released in a wide distribution. The album’s female lead is Dorothy Morrison, who had been singing in her church’s choir in Richmond, California, when she was recruited to join Hawkins’ choir. She also performed at a few R B clubs in the area, but she kept this a secret because the religion frowned on such behavior. She obtained her own record deal with Buddah Records after the success of “Oh Happy Day,” and the label released her albumBrand New Day in 1970.   • This song was originally produced for the gospel market, and its commercial success did not sit well with everyone in the congregation. Local leaders of the faith circulated a petition, requesting that secular radio stations cease broadcasting the song and that Hawkins refrain from using the choir’s name in his performance. Buddah Records replied by renaming the Northern California State Youth Choir “The Edwin Hawkins Singers,” in honor of the late singer Edwin Hawkins. Hawkins believed that the church was on the wrong path. According to The Chronicle, he said: “I believe they believed they were carrying out the appropriate course of action. That was confusing to me since they had been teaching us our entire lives that we were to spread the word everywhere we went.” During this time period, church leaders all around the country frequently forbade members of their congregations from performing outside of the church. A comparable amount of opposition was encountered by the Chambers Brothers when they began singing for a secular audience. Although the song is an expression of pleasure and adoration for Jesus, it appeals to a broader audience. According to Dorothy Morrison, “audience reactions are usually powerful.” People “want to have a pleasant day, and that song helps them achieve that,” she added.

She improvised the most of it, including a section at the end where she exclaims, “good God” (a phrase she learned from listening to James Brown), although she did write down parts of the words, albeit on a piece of paper. It was difficult for her to recall the words even though they were simple and rhymed, as she said in Anatomy of a Song. “I used a pen to write two portions on my hands while I was in church. The third portion was one that I had memorized. During the recording, I raised my hands, palms towards me, to indicate that I was recording. Everyone felt I was in touch with my spiritual side. I was – but I was also listening to the lyrics as well.” In 1970, Glen Campbell’s cover version reached number 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Statler Brothers, Etta James, and Bobby Womack are among the musicians that have covered it in the past. When Aretha Franklin and Mavis Staples recorded this song for Franklin’s 1987 gospel album, One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism, two of the most powerful voices in music came together to create a show-stopping number that was used in the 1993 film Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. They hit number 101 in 1969 with the song “Ain’t It Like Him (That’s Just Like Jesus),” and number 109 with a rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind” in 1970. In 1970, they had a much greater impact on the charts by collaborating with another Buddah artist, Melanie, on her hit single ” Lay Down (Candles in the Rain),” which peaked at #6. This is the song that George Harrison claimed was the inspiration for his song ” My Sweet Lord,” rather than The Chiffon’s “He’s So Fine,” which he was sued for.
