How Old Was St Joseph When Jesus Was Born

How Old was Saint Joseph when Jesus was Born?

The short answer is that we have no record of St. Joseph’s age at the time of his betrothal to our Blessed Mother Mary or at the time of Christ’s birth. In fact, the representation of St. Joseph is equally inconsistent in this film. Examples include Guido Reni’s “St. Joseph and the Child,” which shows an elderly man with gray hair holding baby Jesus, and Jose de Ribera’s “St. Joseph and the Boy Jesus,” which shows a young man holding the child Jesus, and Bartolome Murillo’s “The Holy Family,” which shows a young man holding the child Jesus.

Joseph was an elderly widower who had other children before he married Mary, which gives birth to the portrayal of him as an ancient man in the Bible.

Joseph were unable to conceive any more children.

Surely, his desire would have been sated by now.

Joseph, an ancient St.

Joseph.” Secondly, the Gospel allusions to “the brothers and sisters of the Lord” would be explained by St.

Due to the fact that Joseph was not the original father of Our Lord, these brothers and sisters would be considered Jesus’ half-brothers and half-sisters, but only by law, not by blood.

Mark, for example, “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joses, and the brother of Judas and Simon?” “Aren’t his sisters our next-door neighbors?” (Matthew 6:3) It is unnecessary to use the “elderly widower” argument if one understands what the term “brother” means.

  1. However, adelphos does not always refer to a blood brother who was born to the same parents, but may also refer to a half-brother, a step-brother, or even another male relationship such as a cousin or a nephew as well.
  2. The same can be said with the term sister, which has the same meaning.
  3. Because it is obvious that the saints would not have called two daughters “Mary,” the term “sister” is used to signify a cousin relationship between the two sisters.
  4. Mark, provide more clarification on the ties between Jesus and James, Joses, Judas, and Simon.

Both James the Less and Joses were the sons of Mary, the wife of Clopas (Mk 15:40; Jn 19:25), and James the Less was specifically identified as “the son of Alphaeus” (Lk 6:15); here, “Clopas” and “Alphaeus” are names that have traditionally been used to refer to the same man, just as “Jude” and “Thaddeus” have traditionally been used to refer to the same apostle, I In addition to being the sons of James (rather than one of the apostles), Judas and Simon were also the sons of James (Lk 6:16).

  1. James the Greater and John were the sons of Zebedee who had a mother other than our Blessed Mother Mary, who was their grandmother (Mt 20:20 ff).
  2. Joseph had to be an old widower in order to answer the alleged brother/sister connection concern that had been raised.
  3. Joseph travelling 100 miles from Nazareth to Bethlehem to register for the census, or walking from Bethlehem to Egypt to escape King Herod’s fury.
  4. Joseph as a young man who is capable of providing for his family, as well as serving as a fine manly example and model of human parenting for Jesus and his disciples.
  5. working at a carpenter’s bench.” If he was anything other than a man incapable of loving, he must have been on fire with passion.
  6. He was not at the end of his life, but at the beginning of it, bursting with vitality, power, and controlled enthusiasm” (pp.
  7. Despite the fact that there is no record of St.
  8. Joseph best captures the words of the litany in his honor: “St.

How old was St. Joseph when Jesus was born?

St. Joseph isn’t mentioned much in the Bible, which is a shame. In the Gospel stories, he is merely referred to as “Mary’s husband,” a “carpenter,” and a “just man,” among other things. Neither his age nor the date of his death are ever recorded in the Bible. Various traditions, on the other hand, assist to cast some light on the subject and provide a number of different possibilities to explore.

Old Man Joseph Tradition

It is widely believed in the Orthodox Church that Joseph was an old man when he married the Virgin Mary, according to an ancient story. It was Joseph’s previous wife (with whom he had numerous children) who passed away just days before he welcomed Mary into his house. Some have speculated that these children were the “brothers” of Jesus who are referenced in the Gospels, and this has led some to believe that they were. The History of Joseph the Carpenter, written in the 6th century, is at the center of this legend, and it indicates that Joseph was an old man, yet still full of life and strength.

He did not, on the other hand, suffer from any physical weakness, nor had his vision failed, nor had a single tooth fallen out of his mouth throughout this time.

So his total life span was one hundred and eleven years, with his old age being extended to the maximum extent possible within that time period.

Teenager Joseph

Alternatively, many biblical scholars and historians think that Joseph was a young man, perhaps even a teenager at the time of his death. According to the International Marian Research Institute, “We believe that Mary and Joseph were both in their twenties when Jesus was born, approximately sixteen and eighteen years old, respectively, when Jesus was born.” This was the standard practice for newlywed Jewish couples at the time.” According to the Venerable Fulton Sheen in The World’s First Love, Joseph was undoubtedly a young man who was strong, virile, athletic, attractive, chaste and disciplined; the type of man one would expect to see.

laboring at a carpenter’s bench.

The first was during their journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem, and the second was during their flight into Egypt.

Whatever the reality was, Joseph was a “just man” who did everything he could to protect and provide for Mary and Jesus, no matter how difficult the situation was.

In their presence, he had a soft heart and he loved them both with a deep and enduring affection. Find out what St. Joseph was truly doing as a carpenter in this article. Continue reading:How did St. Joseph die?

How old was Joseph when Jesus was born?

QuestionAnswer We are never informed how old Josephor Mary is in the story. Many people believe that the Virgin Mary was a teenager since that was the age at which young ladies were most frequently married at the time of her death. Because of the customs of the period, it is assumed that Joseph would have been somewhat older than Mary; however, it is not known by how much older. The fact that Joseph’s parents are never mentioned in connection with the marriage preparations might imply that he is an older man who is no longer under his parents’ supervision.

  • According to the Roman Catholic faith, Mary was a perpetual virgin throughout her life.
  • If we suppose that he had many children from a prior marriage, we may infer that he was significantly older than Mary—at the very least, he must have been old enough to have had five or six additional children before Mary.
  • Even if it were true that Joseph had previously been married, we would still be unable to determine how old Joseph was.
  • Joseph appears to have vanished from the scene by the time of Jesus’ public ministry.
  • John 19:26–27 tells that Joseph is not there at the foot of the cross with Mary, and Jesus entrusts the care of His mother to His disciple John.
  • As a result, many believe that Joseph must have passed away by this point, which is seen as more proof that he was older than Mary.
  • There are several factors that can contribute to the death of a young man in our day, and there were undoubtedly many, many more that might have contributed to the death of a young man in the first century.
  • It is obvious, however, that if it had been vital for us to know, the Bible would have made it very apparent for us.

What we do know is that Joseph was a righteous man who was given by God with the responsibility of caring for Mary and her son, Jesus, during their lifetime. Questions about Biblical Characters Return to: Questions about Biblical Characters How old was Joseph at the time of Jesus’ birth?

Sorry, Roy Moore. Joseph Wasn’t Twice Mary’s Age.

After allegations surfaced last week that Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore had pursued relationships with several teenage girls (and sexually assaulted at least one of them) when he was in his early 30s, Alabama State Auditor Jim Ziegler turned to one of the most reliable weapons in the religious right’s defensive arsenal: the Bible. “The Bible is the most reliable weapon in the religious right’s defensive arsenal,” Ziegler said. “Take Mary and Joseph,” Ziegler said in an interview with theWashington Examiner on November 9, just hours after theWashington Poststory broke, in which he defended Moore’s morality.

  1. They became parents of Jesus.” Those who adhere to Ziegler’s interpretation of Scripture, which could include many of Moore’s evangelical supporters, should, on the other hand, proceed with caution.
  2. “We know virtually nothing about Joseph, and no age is mentioned for either Joseph or Mary in the Gospels,” says Paula Fredriksen, professor emerita of scripture at Boston University and author of Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.
  3. Fredriksen explains that “girls were typically engaged between the ages of 12 and 15, and would be married sometime thereafter, at 15 or 16,” and that “boys would have been 19 or 20” at the time of their marriage.
  4. It turns out that this has absolutely nothing to do with the biblical record.
  5. If Mary had sexual relations with Joseph, she would lose that pure and chaste status which was foretold in Scripture.
  6. When it comes to Joseph’s age, the debate revolves around the issue of Jesus’ siblings, who appear in both Mark (6:3) and Matthew (28:19).
  7. If the siblings were the product of unions between Mary and Joseph, then Mary could not have remained a virgin after Jesus had been born.

Her perpetual virginity represented her full and everlasting commitment to being the mother of Christ.

Some heretical bishops—mostly located in the Byzantine East—concluded that the only way to explain Jesus’ siblings was through sexual relations between Joseph and Mary after Jesus had been born.

It was one of several “infancy gospels”circulating during the first few centuries CE that did not make it into the final 4th century version of the Christian Bible because they contained teachings inconsistent with Scripture.

In the text, Joseph is described as the now-familiar, elderly partner of Mary: a widower with adult children from a previous marriage, which helped explain away Jesus’ pesky siblings.

“I have children, and I am an old man, and she is a young girl.

“The Protoevangelium of James was a way of reasserting, in a very emphatic way, the virginity of Mary,” says Princeton University’s Elaine Pagels, professor of the history of religion.

In anotherearly text,The History of Joseph the Carpenter, which was composed in Egypt between the 6th and 7th centuries, Christ himself tells the story of his step-father, claiming Joseph was 90 years old when he married Mary and died at 111.

During the Middle Ages, Joseph the senior citizen became a stock figure in literature and art.

Joseph and the Christ Child,” in which a kindly, grandfatherly Joseph cradles the baby Jesus in his arms.

In the 5th centurymosaics at Rome’s Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, Joseph appears hale and hearty and somewhat buff, in keeping with hisstated professionin the Gospels as atekton, a Greek word which could mean carpenter, but might more accurately be translated into modern English as “construction worker.” Gradually, in the wake of plague and political turmoil that threatened to tear Europe apart during the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, some religious orders started honoring and embracing Joseph as a strong protector and Joseph once again and soon began to regain some of his youthful vigor.

  • St.
  • In 1729, he was enrolled in the Vatican’s official Litany of Saints,.
  • But overall, the myth of the old Joseph has stuck—a historically inaccurate reading of the Bible still evoked by religious conservatives like Zeigler.
  • The concept of an older Joseph was developed only to underscore his non-sexual relationship with Mary, as opposed to supporting some vaguely moral, May-December romance.

Either way, says Fredriksen, what remains clear to her is that comparing Moore to Joseph not only pushes the envelope: It rips it to shreds. “There is nothing either in the Gospels, or in the apocryphal stories that evolved later, that Joseph ever groped Mary,” she says.

Is St. Joseph an Old Man or a Young Man? How to Determine St. Joseph’s Age from the Bible

There are two places in the Gospel of Luke that make reference to a man’s age, both in the same chapter. Luke’s first chapter is titled “The Beginning.” The age of Zechariah is contrasted to the age of St. Joseph in this passage. Take a look at Luke 1:18 and Luke 1:27.

The Age of Zechariah Compared to the Age of St. Joseph

Zechariah has just been informed that God has answered his petitions, according to Luke 1:18. Elizabeth will become the mother of a kid in her old age. Zechariah inquires of the angel, “How am I to know this?” Because I am an elderly guy, and my wife is well into her golden years. Presbytes. Hold on to that thought for a moment. Only a few verses later, a different term is used to refer to “man.” Another term for “man” is used to describe St. Joseph in Luke 1:26-27, and it is as follows: The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the family of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

  • For St. Joseph and Zechariah, Luke uses two distinct adjectives to characterize them, both in the span of a couple of verses.

You could be thinking to yourself, “Wow, that’s wonderful.” The question is, how do these phrases inform us how old St. Joseph is?

Philo of Alexandria Provides The Ages of Manhood

In Jewish culture, distinct terms for men were associated with certain age groups, as seen by the following table. When it comes to the ages of men in English, we have particular terminology for each age group: infants and toddlers; boys and children; adolescents; men; middle-aged men; and elderly men, among other things. Most of the time, these phrases do not match to precise ages. However, in Judaism, they do. Church Father Philo of Alexandria specifies the particular ages that correlate to these terms: newborn, toddler; boy; kid; adolescent; man; middle-aged man; old man; according to the Church Fathers.

  1. INTRODUCTION TO THE CREATION (A Treatise on Moses’ Account of the Creation of the World, as Told by Moses)XXXVI (105) Solon calculates the length of a person’s life by dividing it into the aforementioned 10 periods of seven years.
  2. In his words, “There are seven seasons in the essence of man, which mankind refer to by the term of ages; infancy, childhood, boyhood, and all of the rest.” He remains a baby until he reaches the age of seven, at which point he begins to lose his teeth.
  3. He has seven years left till his beard begins to grow, which will mark the end of his third phase of seven years.
  4. In the next year, until his forty-ninth year, he is a man (Gk.andria, alsoánra), or seven times seven periods.

Was it till your beard began to grow that you realized you were a boy? According to legend, the beard is the gateway to manhood (Gk.andri). (I’m relieved that it isn’t the entrance to womanhood.) The following is a summary of the ages of man, according to Philo and Hippocrates, as stated above:

  • Infancy through seven years of age (the first seven)
  • Childhood through four years of age (the second seven)
  • Boy through fourteen years of age (the third seven)
  • Youth through twenty-eight years of age (the fourth seven)
  • Man through thirty-five years of age (the sixth seven)
  • Man through forty-five years of age (the seventh seven)
  • Old man through fifty-five years of age (the ninth seven)
  • And man through fifty-five years of age (the tenth seven).

Even more significantly, do you note that the identical two Greek terms that we found in the Gospel of Luke are used here as well? Again, we haveandriandpresbytes, which stand for “man” and “middle-aged man” in the plural:

  • “Man” orandriiis the 5th, 6th, and 7th seven-year periods or ages 28-49
  • “Middle-aged man” orpresbytesis the 8th seven-year period or ages 49-56
  • “Young man” orandriiis the 5th, 6th, and 7th seven-year periods or ages 28-49
  • “Middle-aged woman” orandriiis the 5th, 6th, and 7th seven-year periods or

From this, we might deduce that St. Joseph was somewhere between the ages of 28 and 49 when Christ was conceived in the Virgin Mary and born. Because he was a apresbytes, Zechariah was between the ages of 49 and 56. That’s all there is to it!

Note Also How Philo’s Reference to Hippocrates Connects to Luke,Specifically

There’s no way Philo came up with these phrases on his own. Take a look at who Philo is paraphrasing. Hippocrates! That Luke would be conversant with Philo’s jargon doesn’t even come into consideration. It’s only a question of whether Luke is comfortable with medical jargon or not. Hippocrates was widely regarded as the greatest Greek physician. Hippocrates has even been referred to as the “Father of Medicine.” During the Age of Pericles, or approximately the 4th century BC, Hippocrates was active as a physician.

  • He is also known as the Father of Medicine.
  • Consider who Luke was in the first place.
  • What makes you believe Luke would have been familiar with the works of Hippocrates?
  • Would Luke, the physician, have been aware of Hippocrates’ teachings?
  • Yes.
  • It was so popular, in fact, that even Philo of Alexandria, a non-physician, non-pagan, and non-Greeklike figure, is credited with repeating it.

So, How Old was St. Joseph when He Married Mary? How Old was St. Joseph when Jesus was Born?

In the same chapter of the Gospel of St. Luke, a contrast is made between two different terms for “man” -andriandpresbytes – that are used interchangeably. Because St. Joseph is referred to as a “man” orandri, we may estimate his age to be between 28 and 49 years old when he married the Virgin Mary and when Mary conceived Jesus in her womb, putting him anywhere between 28 and 49. (also called the Annunciation or Incarnation). What do you think about that for specificity? Isn’t it incredible? The age of St.

All this time, the solution had been waiting for us in the first chapter of Luke, and now it had finally arrived.

Joseph when Jesus began his public ministry (30) or was crucified (33), as did another prefigurement of Jesus, Jacob.

How Old Was St. Joseph When He Died?

When two terms for “man” are used in the same chapter in the Gospel of St. Luke, the Gospel of St. Luke draws a difference between them: andrian and presbytes. In light of the fact that St. Joseph is referred to as a “man” orandri, we can estimate his age to be between 28 and 49 years old when he married the Virgin Mary and when Mary became pregnant with Jesus in her womb (also called the Annunciation or Incarnation). And how’s that for a focus on the details? How fantastic is that? Isn’t it incredible?

Joseph.

Isaac, another prefigurement of Jesus, may have been the same age as St. Joseph when Jesus began his public ministry (30) or was crucified (33), as was another prefigurement of Jesus, Joseph. Here’s an article about Isaac’s age that you might find interesting.

Later Apocryphal Texts Describe a MUCH Older St. Joseph

There is an apocryphal document named “History of Joseph the Carpenter” that has been published. In its original form, it was composed several centuries after the time of Jesus and the Apostles. The earliest known account of Joseph the Carpenter goes back to the fifth or sixth centuries BCE. The detailed tale of Joseph the Carpenter’s tranquil death is included in The History of Joseph the Carpenter. According to the work, St. Joseph died when he was 111 years old. This passage, on the other hand, also mentions Jesus’ age at the time of St.

Old Men Don’t Walk Into Egypt? Hey, What About Abraham?

Some people have urged that you should wait. Isn’t Abraham travelling back and forth throughout the Middle East, and isn’t Abraham far over the age of one hundred and fifty-five years? This is an excellent question. However, there is a significant contrast between St. Joseph’s escape to Egypt, which took place “by night” when he was being sought and pursued by Herod’s forces, and Abraham’s caravan journey. Abraham was in fact a “Merchant Prince” who was highly well-to-do in his day. See the following article for further information.

St.

They traveled to Egypt by themselves and with a newborn child.

14 And he awoke in the night and brought the infant and his mother to Egypt, where he died the next day.

First and foremost, the book presents a brief list of those who accompanied St. Joseph to Egypt on two separate occasions. This list does not contain any of the author’s relatives or kinsmen, much less slaves or bodyguards. Additionally, caravans would not leave “at night.”

A Note on St. Joseph’s Age and the Perpetual Virginity of Mary

What caused the apocryphal writings to exaggerate the age of St. Joseph? Later writers tried to make certain that the Virgin Mary was described as being continuously virginal. Traditionally, St. Joseph was shown as an elderly widower in order to provide a separate source of income for Jesus’ brothers and sisters. But this isn’t absolutely essential. The Gospels themselves refer to Jesus as having “brothers” (sisters) (Gk.adelphoi). Adelphoicans are biological brothers, cousins, kinsmen, and other relatives.

These males are later recognized in Mark 16:1 as the sons of Clopas and the other Mary, according to the Bible.

Joseph’s brother and Mary’s sister-in-law, unless the Virgin Mary’s parents had numerous daughters called “Mary,” which is unlikely.

Saint Joseph

Saint Joseph was the earthly father of Jesus Christ and the spouse of the Virgin Mary, according to the gospels of Matthew and Luke, who first mentioned him in the book of Matthew.

Who Was Saint Joseph?

Saint Joseph is a biblical person who is revered as a saint in various Christian denominations, and who is widely considered to have been the bodily father of Jesus Christ. The names Joseph and Luke are first mentioned together in the Bible’s gospels of Matthew and Luke; in Matthew, Joseph’s ancestry may be traced back to King David. According to the Bible, Joseph was born in 100 B.C.E. and subsequently married the Virgin Mary, who was to become the mother of Jesus. He died in Israel about the year 1 A.D.

Fact and Fiction

Almost all we know about Saint Joseph, Mary’s husband and the foster father of Jesus, comes from the Bible, and the few times he is mentioned, it isn’t particularly impressive. The 13 New Testament books authored by Paul (the epistles) contain no mention of him at all, and the Gospel of Mark, the earliest of the four Gospels, makes no mention of him at all. Joseph’s genealogy is traced back to King David in the gospels of Matthew and Luke, with one of them (Matthew) tracing Joseph’s pedigree all the way back to King David.

But these assertions are false, and the church does not recognize them as such.

Marriage to Mary

As soon as Joseph discovered that Mary was already pregnant, he chose to divorce her privately, knowing that if he did so openly, she would be stoned to death (Matt. 1:19). Because he was “a kind man and hesitant to put her to disgrace,” he did not want to “bring her to shame.” An angel, on the other hand, appeared to Joseph and informed him that the child Mary was carrying was the son of God and had been conceived by the Holy Spirit, and as a result, Joseph decided to keep Mary as his wife. Joseph was visited by an angel again after Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, this time to warn him and Mary of the impending bloodshed brought on by King Herod of Judaea against the infant.

Joseph again fled to Egypt with Mary and Jesus.

Because Joseph is described as a “tekton,” which historically meant “carpenter,” it is likely that he taught Jesus his trade when he was in Nazareth, according to the Gospels.

The Bible does not mention Joseph’s name again beyond this point, despite the fact that his parents are named twice in the tale of Jesus in the temple: “both his parents.”

Death and Sainthood

As soon as Joseph discovered that Mary was already pregnant, he resolved to divorce her privately, knowing that if he did so openly, she would be stoned to death. Because Joseph was “a just man and hesitant to put her to shame” (Matt. 1:19), he was not punished. As a result of an angel appearing to Joseph and telling him that the child Mary was carrying was the son of God and had been conceived by the Holy Spirit, Joseph decided to keep Mary as his wife and raise him as his son. Joseph was visited by an angel again after Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, this time to warn him and Mary of the impending bloodshed brought on by King Herod of Judaea against the infant.

Joseph, Mary, and Jesus moved to Nazareth, in Galilee, in order to avoid Bethlehem and any acts by Herod’s successor.

Although Joseph is never named by name again in the Scriptures beyond this point, a reference to “both his parents” is made in the account of Jesus in the temple.

St Joseph, Guardian of Jesus

During the holy ceremony honouring St. Joseph, Guardian of Jesus on March 19, 2015, Dr. Thomas Winger delivered the following sermon in the Martin Luther Chapel of the seminary’s Martin Luther Hall. The passage in question was Matthew 2:13-23. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, we pray for you today. In honor of Mothering Sunday, the ancient church held a service last Sunday. Encouraged by the ancient epistle of Galatians 4, which declared the heavenly Jerusalem, or the Church, to be our mother (Gal.

  • And if they happened to stop along the way to select some flowers to give to their earthly mother as a token of their affection, who could blame them?
  • Father’s Day is celebrated in the Church in a manner that is intimately associated with it.
  • Joseph’s feast day is celebrated on January 25th.
  • Joseph is a father figure to all of us.
  • However, today we made things right.
  • In his own words, he “struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is no longer heard.” His absence from the Gospels following the childhood accounts has sparked a great deal of curiosity and debate.
  • Perhaps the fact that Jesus commends Mary into the care of John from the cross lends credibility to this theory.

If Joseph had brought children from a previous marriage into Mary’s care, it may help to explain why Jesus’ “brothers” were skeptical and rejected by their father and brothers.

He serves as the primary instrument of God’s concern for His Son.

Nothing in the narrative can be credited to God directly; it is always His servants who carry out the actions.

God puts on this earthly father’s persona as though it were a disguise.

Even though Joseph was convinced that this voyage was the will of God, owing to the continual guidance of the Lord’s angel, it needed tremendous trust for him to embark on it.

He had, of course, already completed the somewhat difficult trek from Galilee to Bethlehem and Jerusalem in preparation for Jesus’ birth, circumcision, and presentation to the apostles and disciples.

It was as if he had been led into the eye of a hurricane while standing on the precipice of a massive storm; only incredible faith in the one who had given him such seemingly illogical instruction could have brought him to the safety of the hurricane’s quiet.

He guided Mary and Jesus through the hazards of the wilderness path, where they were at the mercy of thieves and wild creatures, as well as hunger and thirst, to safety in the country of his forefather and namesake, Joseph’s.

It is pleasing to Him to accomplish His purposes through methods.

Our dads are not the focus of this Gospel tale, and Joseph isn’t even the focus of this Gospel story.

Every apparition of an angel to advise someone what to do occurs five times in Matthew’s Gospel, and this occurs nowhere else in the New Testament.

This immense responsibility of caring for the Son of God and the Blessed Virgin was not placed solely on his shoulders.

The overarching moral of this narrative is that everything happens just as God would have it, and that we may put our faith in Him to carry out His promises to us.

First and foremost, according to Matthew, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus traveled to Egypt “in order that what had been declared by the Lord through the prophet may be fulfilled, saying, ‘Out of Egypt I have summoned My Son'” (Matthew 2:5).

2:15).

As part of God’s regret for His children Israel, who He loved and protected and saved but who replied with abandonment and disobedience, this is a song of lamentation.

So, what does this have to do with Jesus—or, for that matter, with us—anyway?

For the time being, God had decided to forego His customary method of communicating through messengers and instruments and instead chose to manifest Himself in human flesh.

Israel had failed, even with God’s rescue hand and strong Word, but the Messiah would triumph where Israel had failed.

He traveled to Egypt and then came home, having been summoned by His Loving Father.

The nation of Israel fell prey to temptation and revolted in the desert, but Jesus remained true to God’s Word and overcame the devil’s attempts to seduce him.

No glory can be found in it for Jesus, any more than there could be found in Joseph’s role as a parent.

In accordance with the prophets who were hated and rejected by Israel at the beginning of their careers, Jesus would bear the stigma of being referred to as “the Nazarene”—a word of mockery and disdain.

“I am Jesus of Nazareth whom you are persecuting,” Jesus declares to Paul along the Damascus road, even in His resurrected glory, as He continues to suffer in and with His children on earth.

The Lord appears to be saying, “I am the one who began My existence with the shedding of blood, and with kings wanting My life, and with fleeing to the country of My people’s foes, and with being mocked by the people of My own home, the people I created—all of this I did for you and for your benefit.” These same suffering Messiah hugged the Holy Innocents who died as a result of Herod’s overwhelming wrath, causing the mothers of Bethlehem, like ancient Rachel, to mourn for their children, and they died with Him long before the thief on the cross.

  • They began to resemble Him.
  • Today and here, the Suffering Servant of Nazareth, Son of Joseph the builder, hugs us and welcomes us into his kingdom.
  • It is on this altar that He covers all of that with His blood, and it is in us that He enters with His body, so that we might be what He already is, and so that the Father can look down on us and say to us, “I have called you out of Egypt.” We are His sons, after all.
  • He loves us as much as He loves His Son because He has concealed us within His Son.

Because He protected His Son Jesus from every danger on earth, including the devil’s attacks and even death itself, He has protected us as well as Jesus. We who have been redeemed from Egypt are promised by God that we will never again be slaves, not even for a single moment. Amen.

How Old Was Joseph When Jesus Was Born

Shutterstock.com How many years old was Joseph when Jesus was born? Did you know that Google provides more than 64.6 million results for the question, “How old was Joseph when Jesus was born?” In the Bible, there isn’t a clear and definitive answer to this question; however, scholars have come up with some interesting estimates for Joseph’s age at the time of Jesus’ birth. There has been a great deal of speculation as to whether Joseph was a younger or older man in his lifetime. Despite the fact that his exact age is not specified, there are numerous context clues that can be found throughout the Bible that can be used to form an educated guess.

  1. Let’s look at Luke 1:18 and Luke 1:27 side by side.
  2. “I am a senior citizen, and my wife is well into her golden years.” “To a virgin who had pledged herself to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David,” according to Luke 1:27.
  3. He even refers to his wife as “old” by stating that she was “well along in years” when she died.
  4. Only in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke does Joseph play a significant role in the events of the story.
  5. Except for the fact that he was reportedly descended from King David and that he worked as a carpenter, little is known about Joseph.
  6. In Luke 2:41-42, the author of the gospel of Luke reports that he was still alive when Jesus was around 12 years old.
  7. Despite the “old man” reference used in Luke, many still question Joseph’s age.

The fact that Joseph’s parents are never mentioned in connection with the marriage preparations might imply that he is an older man who is no longer under his parents’ supervision.

This is another argument that argues Joseph is older because of the idea that he died from older age.

Roman Catholics believe that Joseph was older based on Matthew 13:55-56.

Is not his mother called Mary?

And are not all his sisters with us?

Yet, this idea can also be challenged because some men (during that time) had several children by their mid-20s.

The truth is we’ll never really know Joseph’s age when Jesus was born. We’ll never know anything aside from the details the Bible provides. The debate of Joseph’s age and other attributes will always be debated. However, what we do know is:

  • – Joseph gave the name Jesus. The Bible reads in Matthew 1:25, “And he did not know her until after she had given birth to her firstborn son, whom he named Jesus.”
  • – According to the Apostle Joseph, Joseph’s father’s name was Jacob. – Jacob was a descendent of Ruler David, who was considered to be the greatest king Israel had had.
  • – Joseph and Mary first met in Nazareth. The gospels of Matthew and Luke both record that Mary and Joseph were engaged to be married at the time of their birth.
  • – Joseph is not named at the cross when Jesus died, but Mary was there and witnessed the event.

Joseph was a good guy who was sensitive, kind, and obedient to his wife and children. He was a man who sincerely supported and loved his family. Despite the fact that we don’t know much about Joseph, we do know that he was a holy man who obeyed God’s commands.
