  1. Jesus appears to his followers once more in a miraculous way, but this time Thomas is present to see it (John 20:26 – 29).
  2. The Lord’s appearance to humans to establish his resurrection is the fourth time he has done so, but this is the first time all of those who shared the Passover meal with him (with the exception of Judas) have seen him as a group since the resurrection.
  3. Thomas is given the opportunity to examine the wounds he has sustained in order to deepen his faith.

Five hundred see Christ aliveBetween April 17 and May 17(Nisan 27 to Iyar 26)

The apostle Paul is the only New Testament writer who indicates that Jesus appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time after his resurrection, according to the New International Version (1Corinthians 15:6). He did not provide a specific date for when this occurrence took place.

An appointment in GalileeBetween April 17 and May 17

As they proceeded into the Garden of Gethsemane after eating of his final Passover, Jesus informed his eleven disciples (including Judas, who was betraying him at the moment), ″But once I have been risen, I will go before you into Galilee″ (Matthew 26:32, see also Mark 14:28). This encounter, according to the Bible, actually take place (Matthew 28:16 – 17).

On the shores of GalileeBetween April 17 and May 17

  1. While seven of Jesus’ disciples are out fishing on Lake Galilee, Jesus appears to them and reveals himself to them (John 21:1 – 24).
  2. The disciples Peter, John, James, Thomas, Nathanael, and two more who were not named were among those who saw him (likely Andrew and Philip, who lived in the general area).
  3. At the moment of this appearance, Peter miraculously captures 153 fish in his net, and Jesus then asks him three times whether or not he loves him.
  4. Afterwards, Peter discovers that he will die a martyr’s death.
  5. Christ also makes the implication that John will live long enough to write about the end of the age and his Second Coming.

Special appearance to JamesBetween April 17 and May 17

  1. In a unique apparition to James, Jesus revealed himself to be his biological half-brother (Matthew 13:55, Mark 6:3, Galatians 1:19).
  2. According to Paul, this manifestation occurred between Christ’s presentation before a crowd of more than 500 people and a period when he appeared to all of the apostles (1Corinthians 15:5 – 7).
  3. It is uncertain if Paul is referring to Christ’s initial appearance in Galilee or to his final manifestation before ascending into heaven at the end of the chapter.

Commission and ascensionThursday, May 18 (Iyar 27, 3790)

  1. On the Mount of Olives, Jesus had a meeting with his followers (Acts 1).
  2. In the moments before his ascension into heaven, He gives them what is known as the Great Commission to carry out.
  3. He also instructs them to remain in the city of Jerusalem for another 10 days in order to receive the power of the Holy Spirit, which they do.
  4. (Matthew 28:18 – 20, Mark 16:15 – 18, Acts 1:4 – 5) (Matthew 28:18 – 20, Mark 16:15 – 18, Acts 1:4 – 5) The disciples approach Jesus and ask him whether he will restore the kingdom to Israel RIGHT NOW.
  5. He tells them that they have no way of knowing when this will occur and reminds them of the POWER they will get from God in the near future.
  6. In the next moments, Christ blesses his disciples and proceeds to ascend over the summit, indicating his ascension to heaven.

As the disciples look up to see the Lord ascending above the clouds, two white angels come to them. The angels inform them that Jesus will return to the world in the same manner in which they witnessed him leave (Mark 16:19-20, Luke 24:50 – 53, Acts 1:6 – 11).

The Day of PentecostSunday, May 28 (Sivan 8, 3790)

The disciples remain in Jerusalem for 10 days, as commanded by Christ, in order to receive the promise of God’s spirit. Pentecost is the day when God delivers his spirit to more than 3,120 individuals, marking the beginning of the New Testament church. (Acts 2) Immediately following his resurrection, Jesus’ ministry lays the framework for the ideal beginning of the Christian church.

Everyday Religion: Following the path of Jesus after the Resurrection

  1. Earl Crow is the author of this piece.
  2. This is a one-time publication for the Journal.
  3. Q: Why did Jesus choose to remain on Earth for 40 days rather than ascending to heaven after his death?
  4. Answer: The number 40 appears several times in the Scriptures.
  5. The Bible reads, for example, in Genesis 7:12, ″And it rained on the earth for forty days and forty nights.″ Jesus spent 40 days in the desert, being tempted by Satan, according to Mark 1:13 (New International Version).
  6. Forty days might be connected with a period of testing or stress, or it could simply be a standard unit of time measurement.

If you look at the biblical tales of his appearances after his resurrection, you’ll be able to figure out what he was up to during those 40 days. They provide us an understanding of this time period as well as explanations of some of the most significant parts of Christian beliefs. His outward looks supported the key argument that he had defeated death and offered the promise of everlasting life in exchange for his victory. When Thomas expressed his skepticism regarding Jesus’ resurrection, Jesus instructed him to come close to him.″My Lord and my God,″ Thomas said, as he had been instructed.During a sermon in John 20:29, Jesus stated that ″Thomas, because you have seen me, you have believed; lucky are those who have not seen and yet have believed.″ As a result of this remark, it became clear how important it is to have trust.

  1. Thomas realized at that point that Jesus had defeated death.
  2. In Luke 24:30-32, Jesus, in company with his followers, broke bread with them as they participated in the covenant of Holy Communion.
  3. In his message, Jesus urged the disciples to carry out their duty to preach the gospel and lay the groundwork for the establishment of the church.
  4. Matthew 28:19 states that the disciples were to ″go therefore and make disciples of all countries, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.″ He had given them the authority to disseminate the teachings of the faith so that others would accept them.
  5. ″Peace be with you,″ Jesus says in John 20:21-23.
  1. The Father has sent me, and I am sending you,’ says the Son.’ Then, once he had spoken this, he breathed on them and said to them, ″Receive the Holy Spirit.″ The forgiveness of sins is reciprocated; if you refuse forgiveness from someone, forgiveness is withdrawn from them.″

Jesus ascended after 40 days, but didn’t leave us alone

  1. Jesus appeared to many individuals during the 40 days following his resurrection, according to Acts 1:3.
  2. The Gospels and the book of Acts detail several of these appearances, and the apostle Paul also testifies to Jesus’ multiple resurrection appearances in 1 Corinthians.
  3. Then, 40 days after His resurrection, Jesus ascended into the heavens to complete His mission.
  4. It was the 40th day following Easter, and many churches celebrated His ascension on May 27; however, others will wait until this Sunday to do so.
  5. In the end, Jesus, who declared Himself to be God and then demonstrated that claim by rising from the dead, completed His purpose on earth.
  6. All who believe in Him will have everlasting life since He died for the sins of the world and rose again to give them life in the hereafter.

After completing His task, He ascended into the celestial realm.Jesus didn’t abandon us without a word.He promised to send a helper, who would be known as the Holy Spirit.″He will take what is mine and disclose it to you,″ Jesus warned the apostles twice in John 16, according to the Bible.(This is the English Standard Version.) Because of the Word of God, the Holy Spirit directs people to Jesus so that they may hear and believe that Jesus is the Saviour of the entire world. As a result, the apostle Peter would later remark of the Word of God, ″Men spake from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit,″ referring to the men who spoke from God.

  1. Jesus told His followers that He would never desert them.
  2. Indeed, towards the conclusion of Matthew’s Gospel, in verse 20, He adds, ″I will be with you always, until the end of the age.″ By His Word, Jesus continues to be with His people.
  3. In John 8:31-32, Jesus stated, ″If you abide in my word, you are really my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.″ If you dwell in Jesus’ word, you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
  4. A little later (in 14:6), Jesus would proclaim, ″I am the way and the truth, and the life.″ He who comes in the name of the truth will be found in His Word.
  5. These two are inextricably linked because His Word reveals to all people who He is and what He has done for all of humanity.
  1. Jesus also stated that He will return on the day of judgment.
  2. A pair of angels appeared to the disciples as Jesus was rising into heaven and said, ″Why are you standing here staring into heaven?″ This Jesus, who was carried up from you into heaven, will return in the same manner in which you witnessed him go into heaven.″ (See Acts 1:11).
  3. In the same way that Jesus climbed into heaven in all of His glory, He will descend into hell in all of His glory on the final day of the week.
  4. It will be a wonderful day for everyone who believes in it.

″The Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God,″ writes the apostle Paul in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17: ″The Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God.″ So, first, the dead in Christ will rise, followed by us who are alive, and so we shall always be with the Lord.″ A wonderful day of delight has arrived, and the Bible concludes with the most appropriate words in Revelation 22:20, which read: “Amen.″Come, Lord Jesus, come!″ Travis E.Lauterbach serves as the pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, which is located in Falcon Mesa Business Park, 350 Falcon Ridge Parkway, Building 600, in Phoenix, Arizona.Every Sunday at 10:30 a.m., there will be a worship service.

The First Sunday of Lent: Jesus is tempted in the desert // Faith at Marquette // Marquette University

  1. As one Bible scholar pointed out, if Jesus had not revealed this event to some of his disciples, it would not have been included in the stories of his life and work.
  2. He is depicted as being susceptible to the deceptions of Satan.
  3. In the aftermath of his baptism, why would Jesus go into the desert for a forty-day retreat?
  4. For the same reason, individuals go on retreat: to reflect on who they are, where they are heading, and how they will get there in the best possible way.
  5. The blurring of one’s perspective on life occurs as a result of all the noise and bustle of everyday existence.
  6. At his baptism, Jesus required time to process the revelation of his identity revealed to him by the words of his Father: ″You are my beloved Son, and my favor is upon you.″

Matthew 4:1-11

  1. At that point, Jesus was brought into the desert by the Holy Spirit, where he was tempted by the devil.
  2. He had fasted for forty days and forty nights and had become hungry as a result.
  3. ″If you are the Son of God, order that these stones be transformed into loaves of bread,″ the tempter said as he approached him and added.
  4. ″It is written: ‘One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God,’″ he remarked in response.
  5. He was then taken to the sacred city, where the devil forced him to stand on the parapet of the temple and demanded that he throw himself down since he was the Son of God.
  6. He will direct his angels concerning you, and with their hands they will support you so that you do not strike your foot on a stone, as it is written.

″Again, it is stated, you shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test,″ Jesus said.″You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.″ He was taken up to a very high mountain by the devil, who showed him all of the kingdoms of the earth in all their splendor, and then told him, ″All of this I will give to you if you would prostrate yourself before me and worship me.″ ″Get out from here, Satan!″ Jesus said to him.It is written: ″You shall worship the Lord, your God, and you shall serve him alone,″ says the Bible. The devil then left him, and behold, angels appeared and began to tend to him.

Reflection from the Preface of the Mass:

Because of his forty-day fast, this is considered a holy season of self-denial. Choosing to reject Satan’s temptations has taught us to cleanse ourselves of the hidden corruption of evil, and in doing so to eat his paschal feast with purity of heart until we reach the fulfillment of the meal’s completion in the promised land of heaven.

Suggestions for Reflection

  1. Jesus was tested in the same way that we are. Temptations are not inherently harmful
  2. rather, it is how we respond to them that determines whether we turn to God or away from God. Do we perceive temptations as opportunities to turn to God rather than relying on our own abilities?
  3. Is there a difference between the ways Jesus was tempted and the ways we are tempted, or is there a similarity? Satan is inviting Jesus to deny his status as the Son of God, which is hidden under the surface of the various temptations he faces. What if our temptations are a call to abandon the sort of person we aspire to be and instead turn to harmful means of satisfying our needs?
  4. By refusing to give in to the temptations, Jesus opted to rely on his Father to fulfill his deepest hunger, to relate to people in a normal way, and to not place his trust in his reputation, power, or wealth to provide for him. How can we sate our most insatiable cravings? Do we rely on our position of prominence and power to make ourselves acceptable to others?
  5. Are we going to utilize the forty days of Lent as a period of retreat, setting aside time for extra introspection and prayer?

Nature of Jesus in Christianity

  • Christians believe that Jesus Christ was the Son of God, who was offered up as a sacrifice so that mankind may have the opportunity to live forever in Heaven with God. The crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus are all significant events in the development of Christian faith.

  • Christians believe that Jesus did not die a second time after he resurrected from the dead, as some have suggested. As an alternative, 40 days after his resurrection, Jesus was lifted up into the air, body and soul, and returned to the presence of God the Father. The ascension is the name given to this occurrence, which was observed by the eleven disciples who remained after Jesus’ death. Throughout the Bible, in a book referred to as the Acts of the Apostles, this occurrence is detailed, as is the way angels, who are described as ″men clad in white,″ assisted the apostles in understanding what was taking place: After he stated this, he was lifted into the air in front of their very eyes, and a cloud obscured his appearance. They were staring intently up into the sky as he passed them when two men clad in white appeared beside them and took their places beside them. The men of Galilee questioned them, ‘Why are you standing here staring up into the sky?’ This same Jesus, who has been taken away from you and ascended into heaven, will return in the same manner in which you have witnessed him ascend into heaven.’ In Acts 1:9–11, the Bible says For Christians, the ascension is significant for the following reasons: It demonstrates that Jesus truly had conquered death – he wasn’t only raised to die again, but to live eternally
  • Because Jesus’ disciples watched him soaring into the clouds, many Christians believe that Jesus is alive and with God the Father in Heaven, and that he is no longer restricted to life on Earth.
  • Because of the ascension, God’s omnipotence is demonstrated.
  1. Question Following his death on the cross, Jesus was reborn as a human being.

Ascension Day

Ascension Day occurs on the 40th day of the Easter season. It happens 39 days following the celebration of Easter Sunday. In Christian tradition, it is a celebration that honors Jesus Christ’s ascension into heaven, which is celebrated on the third day of Christmas.

What Do People Do?

  1. Ascension Day is officially observed on a Thursday, the 40th day of Easter, and is marked with religious ceremonies (or 39 days after Easter Sunday).
  2. Many employees have the day off on Ascension Day in nations where it is observed as a public holiday.
  3. Because the holiday comes on a Thursday, many individuals choose to take a long weekend off.
  4. The Friday between the two major holidays is often calm, particularly in stores and workplaces.
  5. Despite the fact that Christianity is a minority faith in Indonesia, Ascension Day is observed as a national holiday, and special services are held in churches all around the country on this day.
  6. In Germany, Ascension Day is frequently referred to as Father’s Day since many Protestant men participate in herrenpartien (″outings″) on this day.

Many people in Sweden wake up around 3 a.m.or 4 a.m.to walk out into the woods and listen to the birds as the sun rises. If you hear a cuckoo from either the east or the west, it is considered lucky. These excursions are referred to as gökotta, which translates as ″early cuckoo dawn.″ When it comes to water festivals in the United Kingdom, Ascension Day is linked with a variety of events ranging from well dressing in Derbyshire to the planting of the ″Penny Hedge″ in Whitby, a tiny city in Yorkshire.″Beating the limits″ is another custom that may be observed.

  1. Back in the day, it required thrashing boys with willow branches as they were driven around parish lines, not only to cleanse them of evil but also to teach them the boundaries of their parish, which was a valuable lesson.
  2. When people in the community are walking around their farm, manorial, church or civil boundaries and pause as they pass certain trees, walls and hedges that denote the extent of the boundary, they exclaim, pray and ritually ″beat″ specific landmarks with sticks, this is known as ″beating the boundary.″

Public Life

  • In Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States, Ascension Day is not observed as a federal public holiday by the governments of those countries. Some nations, including as Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Indonesia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Vanuatu, observe the day as a public holiday.

In nations where Ascension Day is observed as a public holiday, government offices, schools, banks, and many other businesses are often closed. In certain nations that commemorate Ascension Day as a national holiday, public transportation services may be provided on a Saturday or Sunday schedule.

Background

  1. The celebration of Ascension Day dates back to the year 68 and is one of the oldest Christian holidays.
  2. Following his resurrection, Jesus Christ met with his disciples multiple times throughout the 40 days that followed to train them on how to put his teachings into practice.
  3. This is according to the New Testament of the Bible.
  4. During the 40th day, it is claimed that Jesus brought them to the Mount of Olives, where they were able to see his ascension into heaven.
  5. Ascension Day, which comes ten days before Pentecost, symbolizes the conclusion of the Easter celebrations.
  6. On a Thursday, depending on the phases of the Moon in a given year, Ascension Day is commemorated in the Christian calendar.

Some churches, notably in the United States, choose to observe it on the next Sunday, which is a common practice. Moreover, because many Eastern Orthodox churches use the Julian calendar to compute the date of Pascha (Easter) rather than the Gregorian calendar that is utilized by many western churches, their celebration of Ascension Day is frequently held after the western celebration.

Symbols

  1. In some countries, Ascension Day celebrations include processions symbolizing Christ’s entry into heaven, and in others, people chase a ″devil″ through the streets before dunking or burning it in effigy, which symbolizes the Messiah’s victory over the devil when he opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
  2. In England, eggs hatched on Ascension Day are claimed to never go bad and, if placed in the roof of a home, will bring good luck to the entire household.
  3. On Ascension Day, there was an ancient belief in Devon that the clouds would always shape into the classic Christian picture of a lamb, as if by magic.
  4. Generally speaking, if the weather is sunny on Ascension Day, the summer will be lengthy and warm.
  5. If it rains on the day in question, crops will suffer and cattle will be afflicted by sickness.
  6. Performing any kind of labor on Ascension Day is considered unfortunate in Wales, according to folklore.

In Portugal, the celebration of Ascension Day is connected with good wishes for prosperity and peace. In rural villages, people have traditionally made bouquets out of olive branches and wheat sheaves, which they decorate with poppies and daisies. The olive and wheat are symbols of a bountiful crop, while the poppy represents peace and the daisy represents wealth.Wheat is stored in the house as a sign of prosperity for the duration of the upcoming calendar year.

Why did Jesus Rise on the Third Day?

Derek Hiebert contributed to this article. 1 year ago today

Why did Jesus Rise on the Third Day?

  1. For centuries, the Christian church has observed the resurrection of Jesus Christ on a Sunday, three days after commemorating his death on Good Friday.
  2. This practice has continued today.
  3. According to multiple passages in the New Testament, this timetable of three days is accurate.
  4. Many times, Jesus foretold it, and the apostles included it in their delivery of the gospel message as well (see footnote references).
  5. However, why did Jesus’ resurrection take place three days after his death is a mystery.
  6. According to eyewitnesses, it appears that Jesus might have risen one day, two days, or even four days after his death and the resurrection would still be considered historically credible.

Is the third day only a coincidental, insignificant element put on to the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection? Is this a coincidence, or does it have any significance?

The Third Day Matters

  1. Timing is extremely important for Jesus and his apostles because it has significant theological ramifications.
  2. When it comes to biblical narrative, the three-day timeline is important because it represents the one-of-a-kind day on which God creates new life and activates his covenant with humanity.
  3. How did the writers of the New Testament get at this conclusion?
  4. After all, the Hebrew Scriptures have a constant ″third day″ design pattern, which Jesus and the New Testament authors are using as a model.
  5. Investigating this pattern for ourselves can help us gain a better understanding of the Easter celebration.

The Third Day Pattern in the Hebrew Bible

  1. The passages Jonah 1:17 and Hosea 6:1-2 in the Hebrew Scriptures are among the clearest illustrations of third-day resurrection in the whole Bible.
  2. Jesus used Jonah’s three days in the belly of the huge fish as a metaphor for his own three days in the belly of the great fish.
  3. The prophet Hosea predicted that God’s reviving operation for Israel would take place on the third day.
  4. While these are important passages to study, the pattern of resurrection on the third day is established far earlier in the tale of Jesus.
  5. There are three passages earlier in the Hebrew Bible’s narrative that begin to develop a pattern of new life emerging on the third day: the creation narrative in Genesis 1, Abraham’s test in Genesis 22, and the Israelites at Sinai in Exodus 19.
  6. The creation narrative in Genesis 1 and Abraham’s test in Genesis 22 both begin to develop a pattern of new life emerging on the third day.

The First “Resurrection”

  1. What is the location of the initial glimpse into the three-day significance?
  2. The first page of the Bible.
  3. The creation story in Genesis 1 is written in the style of a poetry, with repeated declarations and parallelism between events.
  4. Within the rhythm of these repeats, two events in the creation tale stand out as particularly noteworthy, each occurring at a three-day interval and occurring at different points in the narrative.
  5. During the first ″third day,″ God creates dry ground and enables flora to emerge from the soil, including plants that produce seeds as well as trees that give fruit for human use (1:11-13).
  6. The image depicted here is of fresh life sprouting or rising up from the earth, which represents a place of non-existence or death in this case.

The second ″third day″ event occurs on the sixth day of creation, when God produces animals and human beings for the first time (1:24).It is similar to the previous ″third day,″ in that the earth will give birth to live creatures, according to the scripture (1:24-27).Humans were produced from the dust of the earth, according to what we learn later in the book (2:7).This is another example of how new life may be sprung from the earth.Take note of the parallels between humans and trees: both are newly generated from the ground (2:7, 9), both carry seeds and produce fruit (1:11, 28; 3:15), and both are made in this manner on the third day of creation. One thing that distinguishes people from other animals, however, is that they are created in God’s image, and that God enters into a covenant with human beings, blessing and instructing them in their behavior.

A Pattern Emerges

There are three major characteristics of the ″third day″ events in Genesis 1 that serve as a template for subsequent events:

  1. God brings new life where there was once only death (1:11-13
  2. 26-27
  3. 2:7)
  4. God
