13 Post-Resurrection Appearances of Jesus

After His resurrection, Jesus remained alive on our planet for a total of thirty-eight days.I’m confident that hundreds of people witnessed Him throughout that time.Here is a list of thirteen of His public appearances that are recorded for us in the Bible, listed in chronological sequence.As a gardener, he appeared to Mary Magdalene in the first instance (Mark 16:9-11; John 20:11-18).The fact that this woman was picked to be the first to view Jesus is a wonderful coincidence.

Due to the fact that she was one of the most thankful to Him for what He had done for her—He had cast out seven demons—and because of this, she became one of those who remained close to Him and served to Him out of her resources (Lu.
8:2).
She and two other women went to the tomb where Jesus had been laid the previous day, early on Sunday morning, to place spices on His body on the third day after His death.
However, when they arrived, they discovered that the tomb was empty!
As a result, Mary and the other women raced to inform the disciples what had happened.
Upon hearing the news, Peter and John went to the tomb to see for themselves what had happened.

Sure enough, the corpse of Jesus had been removed from the tomb!I’m sure they were perplexed and wanted to know what had happened to it.They returned home.During this time, Mary stood outside the tomb, her eyes filled with tears.And two white-robed guys approached her and inquired as to what was wrong.

″Someone has taken my Lord away,″ she lamented, ″and I have no idea where He has disappeared to.″ Just then, she caught a glimpse of someone who appeared to be a gardener, and she turned around.″What’s the matter with you?″ he inquired.″Can you tell me who you’re searching for?″ ″Do you happen to know where Jesus is?″ Mary inquired.″Have you removed Him from the scene?″ ″Mary!″ exclaimed Jesus.

Mary then recognized Him, and she immediately hurried to tell the other disciples the wonderful news that He had risen from the dead!

He appeared to the other two women who were present with Mary Magdalene—Salome and Mary the mother of James—and told them that he had appeared to them as well (Matthew 28:9-10).
At first, all three ladies appeared to be together, then Mary Magdalene appears to have separated from the other two.

I assume she was younger and a quicker runner at the time.In any case, just as these two women were about to inform the disciples that Jesus’ corpse had gone missing, Jesus appeared to them and greeted them warmly and personally.Unlike Mary Magdalene, they recognized Him immediately away, maybe because of His customary salutation.They rushed up to Him, clasped His feet with their hands, and adored Him!3.

He appeared to Peter in a dream (Luke 24:34).We don’t know the specifics of Jesus’ apparition to Peter; all we know is that when the two on the road to Emmaus returned to Jerusalem, the disciples informed them that Jesus had appeared to Peter.As a result, I’m betting that Peter is the third person on the list to meet with Him.4.He appeared to two men on the way to Emmaus, who were astonished by his appearance (Luke 24:13-32).

Two men traveling eastward to the village of Emmaus saw Jesus for the first time after His resurrection at sunrise.It had been approximately four or five hours since His resurrection.We aren’t informed how He came to them, but I imagine that He just materialized out of nowhere and appeared to them.Because the scripture doesn’t specify that the guys were surprised, I assume they assumed He had simply sort of creeped up on them while they were having a conversation.In any case, Jesus interjected himself into their discourse, but the guys were oblivious to His presence.

It was kept hidden from them by God.In their conversation, they expressed their sadness and disappointment at the murder of Jesus.They also expressed their convictions that He was the Messiah.Although still unrecognized, Jesus informed them from the Scriptures about how Jesus would have to suffer before coming into His moment of glory, a fact that they had forgotten.And He spoke to them about who Jesus was by quoting from Moses and the prophets.

The moment Jesus grabbed a loaf of bread and begged God’s blessing on it, they all recognized Him as the One who had come to dine with them.
And then He vanished into thin air!
They returned to Jerusalem within an hour and were greeted with joy when they learned that Jesus had risen from the dead and appeared to Peter.

They, on the other hand, had some exciting news of their own!

He appeared to everyone of the apostles, with the exception of Thomas (Luke 24:36-43; John 20:19-25).
This happened on a Sunday evening, when the two men from Emmaus arrived in Jerusalem, where the apostles had taken up residence.
They most likely began telling their narrative very immediately.

″Peace be with you,″ Jesus remarked to them as he appeared in front of them just as they were getting into it.Obviously, they were afraid and assumed He was a ghost, which is understandable given the circumstances.However, Jesus attempted to persuade them that He was not.″Take a look at my hands and feet and side, and then touch me,″ he instructed them.And He requested them to bring Him something to eat, and He ate a piece of fish right in front of them as they looked on in amazement.

In my opinion, this means that we shall be able to eat food and enjoy it once we have been resurrected.6.He appeared to the apostles in the company of Thomas (John 20:26-29).

On Sunday evening, Thomas was not there with the disciples when Jesus came to them, and when he learned that Jesus had appeared to them, he did not believe it.
In response, they warned him that he wouldn’t believe it unless he saw the nail wounds in His hands and the cut in His side first.
Then, on a Monday, eight days after that, Jesus came to them once more, this time with Thomas in attendance.
″Peace be with you,″ Jesus said as he welcomed them once again.
And He provided Thomas with a wonderful opportunity to believe.
″Put your fingers here on the wounds in my hands and touch the wound here in my side,″ he instructed him.

Then Thomas came to his senses and said, ″My Lord and my God!″ 7.
He appeared to seven of His disciples on the banks of the Sea of Galilee, according to the Bible (John 21:1-25).
Jesus appeared to seven of His disciples alongside the Sea of Galilee a few days after appearing to His disciples in Jerusalem: Peter, Thomas, Nathaniel, the two sons of Zebedee, and two more.
It is unclear when Jesus appeared to these seven disciples.

Actually, they were fishing in a boat not far from the coast, and they fished all night without catching anything.They were disappointed.After then, Jesus arrived on the coast the next morning.They were aware of His presence, but they were unable to identify Him as such.″Have any of you caught any fish?″ he inquired of them.

They refused to accept it.
″Throw your nets on the opposite side of the boat, and you will capture a plentiful catch,″ Jesus instructed.
Well, I believe you are aware of the rest of the tale.
In fact, they got fish—153 of them, and they were large ones!

Initially, Peter was the only one who recognized Jesus, and he was so thrilled to finally see Him that he leaped from the boat and swam to the shore to meet Him.They were all eating fish for breakfast on the sandbar beside the coast.And Jesus was in charge of the kitchen!8.He appeared to the apostles on a mountain in Galilee, according to the Bible (Matthew 28:16-20; Mark 16:15-18).This presence did not come as a surprise, unlike the others.

It was a scheduled meeting, and it was a pretty important one at that.On the first day of His resurrection, the angels and Jesus spoke of a meeting, which I believe was this one.Jesus also spoke of this meeting at the final supper, which I believe was a reference to the meeting mentioned by the angels and Jesus (Matt.26:32).

The subject of this conference is referred to as the Great Commission.
Jesus gave them the command to go into all the world and make disciples when they were standing on the mountaintop overlooking kilometers of countryside.

He appeared in front of more than 500 comrades (1 Corinthians 15:6).

Paul informs us that Jesus was first seen by Cephas, then by the twelve apostles, and then by over 500 brethren all at the same time.
As a result, it is likely that this group would have encountered Him sometime after the meeting on the mountain with the eleven (I’m not sure why Paul refers to the apostles as the twelve at this point, given there were only eleven at the time).

He appeared to His brother James, who was present (1 Corinthians 15:7).

We are unsure of the location of this apparition, but since James was still a resident of Nazareth, it is possible that it took place there.I’m curious whether Jesus paid a surprise visit to His entire family!11.He came to the apostles and had a meal with them, according to the Bible (Acts 1:3-8; Luke 245:44-49).

According to Acts 1:3, Jesus came to the apostles on a number of occasions throughout the forty days following His crucifixion, demonstrating to them in a variety of ways that He was still alive.
On this specific day—I believe it was the same day of His ascension—He was in Jerusalem with His disciples, sharing a meal with them.
And He opened their eyes to see and comprehend what the scriptures had to say about Him.
In His final words to them, He promised that when He went, He would send them the Holy Spirit and that they should remain in Jerusalem until He came to them and filled them with Himself.
His ascent to the throne (Acts 1:9-12; Mark 16:19-20; Luke 24:50-53).
Immediately following the dinner He had with His apostles in Jerusalem, He brought them to the location where He would be taken up into heaven, which was Bethany, on the Mount of Olives.

According to what I could determine from glancing at a map, it was around a two-mile walk.
I’m curious as to what they were talking about as they were walking.
I’m not sure if they were aware of what was about to take place in front of them.
The text suggests that little was said when they arrived at the location other than a last blessing at the end of the journey.
He blessed them with His hands raised in the air.

And it was at this time that He was carried up to heaven.Wow!″The hour has come; come on Home!″ I believe the Father was saying to Himself and to Jesus when he spoke this.He appeared to Paul on the 13th (1 Corinthians 15:8; Acts 9:1-6; 18:9-10; 23:11).

According to what I can gather from the text, Jesus appeared to Paul three times: first, second, and third.On the way to Damascus, he saw Jesus as a very brilliant light that briefly blinded him, and he heard His voice; 2) he saw Him in a vision; and 3) the night before he was carried to Rome, Jesus stood by him and gave him encouragement.This is a small adaptation of my original post, which was published on April 2, 2013.

The Sequence of Christ’s Post-Resurrection Appearances

Some individuals believe that the Gospel descriptions of Jesus’ post-Resurrection appearances are inconsistent in terms of the places, witnesses, and time of his appearances.We are admonished by Scripture to constantly be prepared with responses (1 Peter 3:15) for the hope that we have in ourselves.Because these solutions, as well as our everlasting hope, are predicated on the reality of Christ’s Resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:17), we must sort through some of the ″many infallible proofs″ (Acts 1:3) that the Bible provides.As the yearly celebration of our Lord’s Resurrection approaches, we give here a defense of some of history’s most significant events, as well as a proposed timeline of those events.

Contradictory or Complementary Accounts?

“To the mountain”

How did Jesus manifest himself and to whom did he appear?On the basis of the word ″to the mountain,″ some have questioned the Bible’s overall internal coherence.Then the eleven disciples walked away into Galilee, to the mountain that Jesus had designated as a meeting place for him.When they saw Him, they worshipped Him, but others were skeptics about His identity.Is it more likely that Jesus appeared to the eleven on a hillside in Galilee or in Jerusalem behind closed doors?

(Matthew 28:16–17, emphasis added) Is this story in Matthew in conflict with those in Mark, Luke, and John, or is it in agreement with them?
Afterwards, when the eleven sat at the table, He came to them and reprimanded them for their unbelief and hardness of heart in not believing those who had seen Him after He had risen from the dead, as had been predicted.
(Matthew 16:14) As a result, they woke up at the crack of dawn and returned to Jerusalem, where they saw the eleven and others who were with them gathered together, proclaiming, ″The Lord has certainly risen, and has appeared to Simon!″ On the breaking of bread, they shared their stories of what had transpired on the trip, as well as how He had been known to them during the journey.
Then, as they were saying these things, Jesus himself appeared in the middle of them and said, ″Peace to you.″ However, they were shocked and frightened, and they believed they had saw a ghost.
(Matthew 24:33–37) In the next evening, on the first day of the week, when the doors to where the disciples were gathered were closed out of dread of the Jews, Jesus appeared in the middle and said to them, ″Peace be with you.″ This was the first time that Jesus had appeared to them.
When He had finished speaking, He extended His hands and showed them His side.

When the disciples finally saw the Lord, they were overjoyed.(See also John 20:19–20.) Following His Resurrection from the dead, Jesus appeared to his disciples on a number of occasions, with no fewer than 10 of these sightings being recorded in the Bible.Beginning on Resurrection Sunday, He ″showed himself alive…by numerous infallible proofs″ (Acts 1:3, KJV) and educated His apostles and a large number of additional disciples on a regular basis for the following forty days.The apostles stood by and watched as he descended from Mount Olivet, which is near Jerusalem (Acts 1:9–12).

In order to sift out the verses in issue, we must evaluate multiple appearances in terms of when and where they took place, as well as who was there when they took place.In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul includes a summary statement that includes information on these appearances as well as others that were not reported in the Gospels or Acts.For I delivered to you first and foremost what I had also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that He was buried, and that He rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that He was first seen by Cephas, and then by the twelve apostles and prophets.After then, He was seen by over five hundred brethren all at once, the vast majority of whom are still alive today, though some have passed away.

After that, He appeared to James, and then to the rest of the apostles.
Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:3–7, We know that those appearances included a meeting with Cephas (Peter), a later appearance to ″the twelve,″ and a subsequent appearance to almost five hundred individuals at once, the vast majority of whom were still living eyewitnesses at the time Paul composed his letter.

Eleven or Twelve?

Some may argue that Paul was incorrect in referring to ″the twelve″ since that Judas is no longer alive.Although Matthias had taken over as betrayer at the time Paul wrote this letter (Acts 1:20–26), Paul was still writing it.It is noteworthy that the eleven unanimously decided that the successor would have to be a man who had been with them from the time of the Lord’s baptism until the day He ascended.1 In fact, one of the primary goals of this appointment was to ensure that the new apostle would serve as a testimony to the Resurrection of Christ.As a result, by the time Paul penned his epistles, Matthias had become a member of ″the eleven″ and was himself a witness to the risen Christ, making the designation ″the twelve″ absolutely correct.

This scenario serves as a reminder that Jesus had a large number of followers in addition to the twelve apostles.

The Women

Prior to attempting to reconcile the four different Gospel versions of the women’s acts, it is necessary to consider their early appearances on Resurrection Sunday.The gospels of Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, and John 20 all begin with the arrival of the ladies (including Mary Magdalene) at the tomb of Jesus.2 They discover it to be empty, with the stone removed.After the initial visit to the tomb, we advise that Mary Magdalene be secluded from the other ladies for a while.The implication is that she raced out to locate Peter and the ″other disciple″ (John).

The other nine disciples, who were not with Peter and John that morning, were evidently unaware of the empty tomb until they were alerted by the other ladies.
3 Mary Magdalene informed them that the body of the Lord had gone stolen, according to John 20:1–2.
Following their visit to the empty tomb and departure, Mary Magdalene lingered behind, crying.
She witnessed the angels in the tomb, inquired about Jesus’s whereabouts, and then had her own discussion with Jesus.
In John 20:17, Jesus orders her to go tell His brethren that He has risen from the dead, and it is said in verse 18 that she did so.
As shown in the passages above, Mary Magdalene was the first person who saw Jesus and that the disciples did not trust her tale, according to Mark 16:9–11.

Meanwhile, the other ladies entered the tomb after discovering the stone had been rolled aside and noticed an angel sitting on the right.As Luke recounted, they were startled when they learned there were two angels present.One of them is mentioned only once in Matthew and Mark, possibly to draw attention to the one who was speaking (Matthew 28:5–7; Mark 16:5–7; Luke 24:4–8).The angel instructs the women to go inform the disciples and Peter that Jesus has risen from the dead and would meet them in Galilee, alluding to Peter’s isolation from the group following his denial and implying that he was not with the rest of the group.According to Matthew 28:8–10, the ladies set out on a frantic pursuit to locate the disciples.

It’s possible that they narrowly missed Peter and John, who were on their way to the tomb at the time.According to tradition, while these ladies were on their way to locate the disciples in the city, Peter and John visited the empty tomb, and Mary Magdalene had her meeting with Jesus.Following His appearance to Mary Magdalene, Jesus went to the women who were on their way to the city, reinforcing the message that they should go tell His brethren that He would be in Galilee when they saw Him for themselves.Perhaps Jesus made this personal appearance because they were so terrified and unable to talk to anybody else because of their terror (Mark 16:8).

They were overjoyed to convey the message after meeting with Him.
It is summarized in Luke 24:9–11 that ″the eleven and all the others″ eventually learned of Christ’s Resurrection from all of the women, including Mary Magdalene, who had witnessed it.
No one, however, took them seriously.

The Empty Tomb and Beyond

Another significant incident occurred on that Sunday morning, according to Matthew 28:11–15.The leading priests were informed of what had occurred by the guards.The leading priests concocted and circulated the story that the disciples had taken the body while the guards were sleeping, with the assistance of bribes in the appropriate places.The fact that the tomb was indeed empty was verified for all time by this act of defiance.In the subsequent verses of Matthew 28, it is stated that none of the events depicted took place on that particular Sunday.

Prior to the apparition reported in verse 17, Matthew 28:16 tells that the disciples moved out into Galilee, which was a day’s travel away at the time, according to the Bible.
As a result, this event occurred after some of the events reported in the other Gospels.
Before appearing to the eleven as a group, Jesus is known to have made two previous documented visits to individual people.
The first is reported in Luke 24:13–35 and briefly in Mark 16:12–13, while the second is documented in Luke 24:37–42.
Following hearing the women’s testimony and Peter and John’s description of the empty tomb, Cleopas and his friend headed out on the road to Emmaus to find out what had happened.
In the course of their journey, they had a chance encounter with Jesus, who gave them an eye-opening Bible lecture in which He revealed how the Old Testament Scriptures had been fulfilled via His suffering, death, and resurrection.

As soon as the duo realized that they had been eating with Jesus, they ran back to the city to inform the rest of the party.When they arrived, they discovered that the Lord had also had a personal encounter with Simon Peter before to their arrival.The encounter with Peter is mentioned in Luke 24:34, but we are not given any other information about it.To long last, we get at the passages in question.By this point, it is late on a Sunday evening.

It is recorded in Luke 24:33 that the Emmaus road couple brought their news to ″the eleven gathered together, and others who were with them.″ We do know, however, that Thomas was not there when Jesus appeared to this particular gathering.Perhaps Thomas had gone out for some reason or was simply not there at the moment, and the name ″the eleven″ was used to refer to the group of disciples following Judas’ death as a generic description of the company of disciples.According to John 20:26, Thomas had to wait another eight days before Jesus appeared to the rest of the disciples again.Unlike Mark and Luke, Matthew did not record any of Christ’s visits to ″the eleven″ on that day while remaining in the city, although Mark and Luke did.

As we can see from Luke’s narrative, there were other individuals in attendance with the disciples when Jesus ate in their presence, demonstrating that His body had been raised from the dead (Luke 24:42).
During these two visits in Jerusalem, He reassured His supporters that He was, in fact, still alive.

Galilee

The sightings in Galilee are not mentioned in Mark or Luke, but they are described in Matthew 28:16–17 and John 21.According to Matthew 28:16, the eleven disciples traveled to Galilee, where they presumably waited for Jesus to arrive as He had promised in the word provided by the women.According to John 21, Peter and six other people made the decision to go fishing together.Jesus directed them to throw their nets on the other side of the boat from where they were now fishing.When the disciples arrived on the shore, they saw Jesus preparing breakfast for them.

Peter was present when Jesus had his well-known ″feed my sheep″ talk with him, during which he was informed of his impending execution.
This was ″the third time Jesus presented Himself to His disciples after He was risen from the dead,″ which means that it was the third time He appeared to them as a group, according to the gospel according to John (John 21:14).
The first meeting consisted of the eleven members of the team except Thomas, while the second meeting included Thomas in attendance.
Following Jesus’ seashore apparition, he appeared on the scheduled mountain in Galilee (Matthew 28:16–17), which took place a short time later.
As it turns out, these words really follow the narrative of the chapter very rationally, because just a few pages earlier, Jesus had instructed the ladies to notify His brethren that they would be seeing Him in Galilee.
We are taken to Galilee, where we will see Jesus in his promised appearance, after the parenthetical remarks concerning the tale the Jewish officials created to explain away the missing corpse in the preceding verses.

Many believe that this gathering on the hillside in Galilee was the occasion when Jesus appeared to over five hundred individuals at the same time, as recorded in the gospels (1 Corinthians 15:6).By this time, knowledge of Christ’s predicted arrival would have spread throughout His large number of disciples, giving them ample time to prepare for it.Although Matthew 28:16–17 does not explicitly mention that others were there with the disciples, there is nothing in the passage that rules out the idea that other followers had assembled at the location in question.When the disciples saw Jesus there, they worshipped Him, despite the fact that others were still skeptical.The eleven had at this point seen Jesus more than once, and some had even had a meal with Him, therefore the phrase ″some doubted″ is most likely referring to those who had not before seen Him.

Last Appearances

After appearing on the mountain, we learn from 1 Corinthians 15:7 that Jesus met with His half-brother James, who was also there.While we cannot be certain of the location of this encounter, it seems likely that it took place in Galilee, given that this is where Jesus and James grew up and where James appears in the Gospel accounts (Matthew 12:46–50; cf.Matthew 13:55).Wherever this occurred, it appears to have served as a trigger for James, who had before identified himself as a skeptic (John 7:5), to come to the conclusion that his half-brother actually was and is the Son of God.Furthermore, according to 1 Corinthians 15:7, Christ was seen by all of the apostles for a second time following His meeting with James.

It is recounted in Acts 1 that Jesus led the apostles as far as Bethany, which is located on the eastern slope of Mount Olivet near Jerusalem (cf.
Matthew 28:18–20; Mark 16:14–19; Luke 24:44–53).
He delivered them their final instructions before ascending to the throne of God in victory.
Last but not least, the Apostle Paul remarked, ″Last of all, He was seen by me likewise, as by one who had been born out of season.″ Acts 9:1–9 and 1 Corinthians 15:8 both describe how Paul (then known as Saul) made a surprise appearance while on his way to Damascus on a mission to persecute Christian believers.

Conclusion

Assuming the infallibility of Scripture and, as a result, the veracity of the eyewitness stories, here is one conceivable post-Resurrection/pre-Ascension chronology that may account for all that has been revealed to us in God’s Holy Scripture.4 As the suggested timeline above demonstrates, there are no inconsistencies in the narratives of Jesus’ post-Resurrection appearances after his death and resurrection.A good reporter piecing together a story from reliable eyewitnesses is what we must do when studying God’s Word.We must examine all of the eyewitness accounts recorded in God’s Word, realize by faith that for Scripture to be reliable, they must all be true, and then see how they fit together without the use of any contrivances.As a whole, these tales convey the most essential truth in all of human history: that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died for our sins and rose again, defeating sin and death for the sake of our redemption and the glory of the Father.

People who have never seen Jesus, such as ourselves, are also being urged to believe in Him, and they are being promised the incredible blessing of eternal life as a reward for their faith (1 Peter 1:8–9).

The 12 Appearances of Jesus after His Resurrection

After His Resurrection, Jesus made a total of 12 public appearances.
Several women from Galilee were there when Jesus died in public and his body was given by the Roman authorities to Joseph of Arimithea and Nicodemus, who laid him in a sepulchre (tomb), which was also viewed by the ladies from Galilee.
A ″huge stone rolled up to the door of the sepulchre,″ according to Matthew’s account.
Matt.27:60.
The chief priests, recalling that Jesus had prophesied that he would return from the dead after three days, went to Pilate, who ordered that the sepulchre be guarded until the third day, fearing that his disciples would come by night and seize his corpse, proclaiming that he had risen from the dead.

This would have provided some protection to the ever-cautious Pilate, as well as an action that would allow him to maintain the impression of authority.
As a result, they also sealed the stone and set a timepiece.
The seal ensured that if the stone was moved, it would be possible to demonstrate that the grave had been tampered with by someone else.
The presence of a guard meant that no one could come in or exit without being noticed and noted by the guard.

The women on their way back from the sepulchre Matt 28:9-10 refers to ″them,″ but who exactly are ″they″?
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary are mentioned by Matthew in verse 1.
Mary Magdalene, it appears, had already left the scene, but the other Mary was present, as was whoever came to assist them, maybe Salome, according to Mark’s account.

When Jesus speaks to them, it is apparent that they recognize him, and the scriptures state that they this time fall at his feet in response.This time, the message instructed him to inform his comrades.Who is it that Jesus is speaking to?The Greek term for brother is athelphous, which can refer to either a literal or figurative brother.

It might merely refer to the 11, or it could refer to his kin or the brethren in general.

Peter’s physical appearance.

This is stated in both Luke 24:34 and 1 Cor.15:5, among other places.
It does not specify where or when the event will take place.
It has been hypothesized that Simon Peter was alone on the walk to Emmaus or alone in Jerusalem at various points in the Bible.
After having denied him three times and cutting off the ear of the soldier who needed to be healed, it must have been of great comfort to him to know that it had actually taken place.

4.On the way to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-31), Jesus encounters the disciples.A group of two people was travelling to the town of Emmaus, which is about seven or eight kilometers from Jerusalem.Cleopas is the one who has been named.It is believed that he is Alphaeus, the father of James, who was one of the twelve apostles, rather than James the son of Zebedee, who was one of the twelve.

The other person may have been Peter once again, but it does not appear to have been one of the other twelve.
One critic has speculated that it may be Luke himself who is behind this.
A stranger, however, joins them on the journey, which is not an uncommon occurrence given that it was the feast of Passover and they were in the middle of nowhere.
They didn’t recognize him in his new shape, and his previous garments had been dispersed among the soldiers at this point in time.
They pour out their emotions about all they have witnessed and learned about Jesus in Jerusalem, from his murder on the cross just a few days before to the empty tomb and the word from the angels announcing that Jesus had risen from the dead.

The seeming stranger, who turned out to be Jesus, expounds on the scriptures, stating that the Messiah must die before he can be crowned (given honour).
When the two of them requested him to stay with them, they were clearly excited at the prospect of having new passages opened to them.
He remained to have a meal with them, and when they broke the bread, they realized who he was before disappearing in front of them, or vanish as the scripture states.

Post Resurrection appearances of Jesus

Easter can only happen if Jesus actually reappeared after His death, which he did.

This group includes the apostles Simon Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, James, and John (the sons of Zebedee), as well as two more apostles who were not identified (John 21:1-14).

James, Jesus’ brother, is also mentioned by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:7 when Jesus appears to him and his disciples. That James acted as a leader in the early Jerusalem Church (Acts 15) and was responsible for drafting the letter of James is explained in this way. His brother Jude would likewise become a believer of Christ and would go on to compose the letter that bears Jude’s signature.

Appearance 11: The 11 Apostles

The ascension of Jesus is recorded in Acts 1:4-9, which occurred 40 days after his resurrection. This would have been 10 days before the Feast of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2). However, it is possible that Matthew 28:16-20 describes the identical occurrence, however this is not confirmed.

Appearance 12: The Apostle Paul

It is recorded in Acts 9 and 1 Corinthians 15:8 that Jesus appeared to Paul (then known as Saul) on the way to Damascus.
