REVIEWED: Christ in Crisis: Why We Need to Reclaim Jesus

Jim Wallis is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in evangelical Christianity in the United States, having founded both the Sojourners religious community and the magazine that bears his name. However, because of his peace and social justice activism, his reputation runs counter to the stereotypical view of evangelicals as Moral Majority conservatives held by many. He does not take political opinions, but is often considered as a member of the Christian Left. In recent years, he has emerged as one of the most outspoken opponents of President Donald Trump’s administration and the support given to it by mainstream evangelicals.

According to him, evangelical support for Trump is no longer only a moral compromise, but rather an abandoning of the essential message of Christianity, the good news proclaimed by Jesus.

A new message from Wallis and other church leaders, “Christ in Crisis,” is an elaboration of “Reclaiming Jesus,” a message that was initially given in 2018, and the crisis to which that message alluded has only become worse since then.

In order to prove his point, Wallis tackles eight concerns that he believes are important to Jesus’ teachings, beginning with the requirement to broaden our understanding of what it means to be a neighbor.

(He has a same harsh stance against people who are biased against members of the LGBTQ+ community.) To Friends, the basic contours of Wallis’s argument should be immediately recognized, notably in its acknowledgement that to chose the way of Christianity frequently obligates one to stand in opposition to the Caesars of this world and their governments.

For the record, the paperback edition of this book was published by the same publisher earlier this month under a new title, Christ in Crisis?: Reclaiming Jesus in a Time of Fear, Hate, and Violence.

As such, Christ in Crisis is less of a revelation than it is a recapitulation of previous calls.

Christ in Crisis

In response to our current “constitutional crisis,” New York Timesbest-selling author and Christian activist Jim Wallis calls on the United States to return to the teachings of Jesus as a method of saving us from the divisive hatred and rage that has gripped our tribal nation. In Christ in Crisis, Jim Wallis offers a path of spiritual healing and unity that might assist us in bridging the breach that now exists amongst Americans. Building on “Reclaiming Jesus,” the proclamation he and other church leaders published in May 2018 in response to America’s present crisis, Wallis argues that Christians have been detached from Jesus and that they must reexamine their spiritual roots in order to be effective in the world.

Christians have frequently recalled their faithful discipleship of Jesus Christ – both personally and publicly – through difficult times, and they have returned to this state of mind and action.

When it comes to politics, however, the religious and cultural critic is more concerned with religion than with dividing lines and threats threatening our country today.

This practical field guide for all those active in resistance and regeneration projects in faith communities in the post-2016 political landscape is written in an accessible and engaging style.
