The Finding in the Temple, also known as Christ among the Doctors or the Disputation (the common titles in art), was an occurrence in Jesus’ early life that is portrayed in chapter 2 of the Gospel of Luke. It was a pivotal moment in Jesus’ life that was reproduced in art. It is the only occurrence from Jesus’ later boyhood that has been recorded in the gospels.

Why baptize children at young age of 8?

• A friend of my daughter recently expressed her disbelief that Mormons baptize children at such a young age, at the age of eight years old. This prompted some thought in me. We know from the scriptures that baptism by immersion is required and that Christ set the pattern for us all to follow in this regard. The reason we do not baptize newborns or small children is that, according to Section 29 of the Doctrine and Covenants, ″young children are redeemed″ through Christ and ″cannot sin,″ since Satan ″is not given the authority to seduce tiny children until they begin to be accountable before me.″ But why do we baptize children at the early and impressionable age of eight? Isn’t it better to wait till they are older and, some would say, more capable before making such a life altering decision? It is possible that there are other explanations, but allow me to offer three. The first becomes evident to us as we read D&C section 68, whereby the Lord orders that children be baptized at the age of eight, but only after first issuing a strong warning to their parents. He reminds them that they have a responsibility to teach their children the fundamental ideas of Christ’s message before they are baptized. When children are eight years old, a parent ″teach(s) them not to grasp the doctrines of repentance, trust in Christ the Son of the living God, baptism, and the gift of the Holy Ghost through the laying on of the hands,″ the fault is placed on the parents’ shoulders. Whoa! It is not enough to merely baptize children when they reach the age of eight. It is our responsibility as parents to prepare our children for baptism by instructing them about the Savior Jesus Christ, how to repent of their sin, about the blessings that come with baptism, and about the blessings that come as a result of receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. This is what we are expected to do in our homes, in church meetings, and at other activities. After that, ″their children shall be baptized for the forgiveness of their sins when they are eight years old, and shall receive the laying on of hands,″ after they have been properly prepared. At age 8, the scriptures remind us that teaching the fundamental truth of Christ’s gospel, which includes teaching right from wrong, is essential to developing responsibility. At that point, they are also instructed to be baptized. Is this sufficient justification for explaining to my daughter’s friend why we baptize her at the age of eight? No, I believe there is much more to this doctrine than meets the eye. Baptism also enables the baptized individual, whether he or she is eight years old or eighty years old, to form an eternal commitment with God. What a wonderful blessing this has been! A baptism person enters into a covenant connection with God that is binding in this life as well as in the life to come, allowing the individual to be admitted into God’s kingdom if he or she is deserving. However, for me, a particular favorite scripture, which is related with the process of baptizing, not only reveals the importance of 8-year-old baptism, but it also displays the confidence and profound love the Lord has for his children. I’ll explain why later. ″The power of the Lamb of God, that it fell upon the saints of the church of the Lamb, and upon the covenant people of the Lord,″ Nephi witnesses in a vision in the Book of Mormon’s First Nephi. ″They were equipped with righteousness and with the might of God in great splendor,″ Nephi witnesses. Consider for a moment what the Lord accomplishes in the life of an 8-year-old kid who is baptized and enters into a covenant relationship with him or her via baptism. One method in which the Savior equips that child is by providing them with the CONSTANT company of the Holy Ghost, whose purpose and obligation is to:Bear witness of the Father and the Son, so increasing personal testimony.
• Bear witness of the Son, thereby strengthening personal testimony.
• The Lord will ″show unto you all things (that you) should do″ — lead you in making decisions and protect you from bodily and spiritual harm.
• Allow the Spirit to introduce you to spiritual abilities that will be of service to you and others
• When you are in need of consolation, someone will console you.
• Justify your acts in front of God – give God approval for what you do in front of God when you act righteously
• As you fulfill the commandments and keep the covenants you have made, you will be sanctified or purified.

1. We baptize children when they reach the age of eight because it is the age of responsibility.
2. We baptize children at the age of eight because the Lord desires for them to benefit from the advantages that come from covenant partnerships, both in this life and in the next.
3. The reason why we baptize children at the age of eight is because we provide them with access to the power of righteousness as well as the power of God in their life.
4. That is a great doctrine, and that is a worthwhile and magnificent blessing to bestow upon a kid!

That our heavenly Father gives the blessings and protections that come with baptism into his church to children as young as eight years old, after they have reached the age of responsibility, is a beautiful thing to know.

• When it comes to answering this issue, Luke 3:23 (NKJV) informs us that ″Jesus Himself began His ministry at around 30 years of age, being (as was assumed) the son of Joseph.″ Moreover, if one follows the account of Jesus after his baptism, one will read about him teaching to large crowds in front of the temple.
• Many years of church history and many sermons from my past 52 years of hearing God’s Word delivered, as well as church tradition, indicate that His ministry lasted around three years, which would place Him at approximately the age of 33 when He was killed on that awful, wicked cross!
• Jesus began teaching immediately after being baptized by John in the Jordan River, which is an important point to make clear.

That was my initial assumption.Interesting!And I looked into it more in the scriptures and discovered that Saul, the first King of Israel, was thirty years old when he was anointed by the prophet Samuel to be the nation’s first king.And David was thirty years old when he was anointed and elevated to the throne of Israel.

And the prophecies stated that Jesus would come in two capacities: as a King and as a Priest.Things were starting to make more sense at this point.Let us return to the narrative of the events that occurred immediately following Jesus’ baptism.In this image, we see Jesus, fresh from his baptism, emerging from the water with the Holy Spirit descending on him like a dove, the heavens opening, and God the Father speaking out loudly from the clouds.We also see the opening of the heavens and the voice of God the Father speaking out loudly from the clouds.
