Why did Jesus call the Canaanite woman a dog?
Answer to the question During His ministry in Matthew 15:21–28, Jesus comes across an imploring Canaanite (Syrophoenician) lady who begs Him to heal her daughter.″It is not acceptable to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs,″ Jesus tells her when she first approaches him with her request (Matthew 15:26).When taken out of context, and especially when written in English, it’s easy to interpret this as an offensive remark. It is evident, however, that Jesus is constructing a metaphor in order to clarify the goals of His mission as it moves through the narrative. In addition, He is imparting an essential lesson to His pupils.Gentiles were occasionally referred to as ″dogs″ by Jews during Jesus’ time.
- This term is kuon in Greek, and it literally translates as ″wild cur″ (Matthew 7:6; Luke 16:21; Philippians 3:2).
- In ancient times, non-Jews were seen as so unspiritual that simply being in their company may render a person ceremonially unclean (John 18:28).
- The majority of Jesus’ career, on the other hand, consisted on flipping people’s expectations and prejudices on their heads (Matthew 11:19; John 4:9–10; Acts 1:8).
According to the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus left Israel and traveled to Tyre and Sidon, which was Gentile territory (Matthew 15:21).When the Canaanite woman approached and prayed for healing over and over again, the disciples became irritated and requested Jesus to send her on her way (Matthew 15:23).At this moment, Jesus defined His current work in a way that was understandable to both the lady and the disciples who were standing by watching. The people of Israel, not the Gentiles, were His primary responsibility at the time of the Exodus (Matthew 15:24).Distracting His attention away from Israel would be analogous to a parent taking food away from his children in order to give it to their dogs, which would be a breach of His mandate (Matthews 15:26).
- The specific phrase Jesus used in this instance, in Greek, was kunarion, which literally translates as ″little dog″ or ″pet dog.″ This is an entirely different word than the term kuon, which is used to refer to unspiritual persons or animals that are considered ″unclean.″ Jesus put people through a number of tests to determine their true intentions, most of which were in the form of response questions or challenges (see John 4:16–18; and 4:50–53).
- The Canaanite woman receives a similar answer from him.
- In order to put her to the test, Jesus turned down her plea and emphasized that she had no genuine hope of His assistance.
The lady, on the other hand, exemplified the concept Jesus Himself taught in the parable of the persistent widow (Luke 18:1–8): ″Be persistent to the end.″ Her response demonstrated that she completely comprehended what Jesus was saying while yet having the conviction to ask the question (Matthew 15:27).Jesus complimented her faith, describing it as ″awesome,″ and fulfilled her desire (Matthew 15:28).According to the context and words used, Jesus did not refer to the Canaanite lady as a ″dog,″ either directly or indirectly, according to the evidence. He wasn’t making a racial or ethnic insult, but he was making a point about the values that God had placed in his life.
He was also putting the woman’s faith to the test, and he was imparting a valuable lesson to His disciples.Questions concerning Matthew can be found here. What was Jesus’ reasoning for calling the Canaanite lady a dog?

Why Did Jesus Call a Woman a Dog?
A little more than 1,500 years before Jesus was born, the Canaanites turned against the Jews and forced them to flee the Promised Land.It was at this time that the Jews became mortal enemies with the Canaanites.According to Matthew 15:21-28, the account of a frantic Canaanite lady who was so determined to find healing for her daughter that she broke social and religious customs by openly speaking to Jesus (a man she didn’t know) —and beyond that, a Jewish man.The fact that Jesus, God in the flesh, loved this woman is clear from everything else we’ve read in the Gospels. However, it didn’t appear that way to her when she first began talking to Jesus.″Son of David, take compassion on me!″ she begs in desperation.
- Her supplication was for mercy.
- There are numerous words that may be used to describe God’s love for us, and mercy is surely one of them.
- God’s grace provides us with mercy in the midst of our affliction.
Those two phrases capture the essence of the gospel: misery is the bad news, representing the position in which we find ourselves, and mercy is the good news, representing God’s love for us.The woman merely pleaded for God’s mercy on her behalf. But Jesus didn’t even bother to respond to her.Have you ever been in a state of desperation and called out to God, but it appeared as though you didn’t hear, sense, or see anything in response—only silence?God does not always respond in the manner that we expect him to.
- The fact that Jesus did not respond to her does not imply that he did not care about her.
- We’ll go on with the tale from here.
- Not only is Jesus deafeningly silent, but his followers have approached him and requested him to expel her.
They protested that her screams were making them uncomfortable. What do the disciples want Jesus to say to this distressed woman?Do they want him to tell her to leave them alone? The Canaanite lady, on the other hand, is not defeated; she kneels before Jesus and begs, ″Lord, please assist me.″ Jesus, it appears to our politically correct, forgiving ears in the twenty-first century, becomes plain harsh.
″It’s not ethical to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs,″ he responds emphatically. What exactly is the point of this remark? It’s hard not to think of this as the kind, caring, compassionate Jesus who reached out to those who couldn’t reach out to him, cured lepers, paralyzed, and blind, and catered to those who were the least, the last, and the least of these? Is Jesus being disrespectful—is he acting in a racist bigoted manner?
- It has already been established that the Canaanite lady is a desperate mother who will not give up!
- Despite the fact that the dogs devour the crumbs that fall from their master’s table, she answers, ″Yes, Lord.″ She appears to be the kind, caring, and humble person, but Jesus appears to be the severe, detached, non-involved, and maybe even biased person in the story.
- This conversation—and, more importantly, the love connection that Jesus extended to this woman—requires two essential elements.
- In the first place, the Canaanite woman was aware that Jews believed that the afterlife consisted of a banquet with the Messiah.
It was referred to as the Messianic banquet. They believed that this future feast would be largely for their own people, but they were fully aware that non-Jews (Gentiles) would be invited to participate as well. The Jews were well aware that the Exodus, when God delivered them from slavery in Egypt, was the pivotal and defining event in their history. It was clear to them that God’s release from Egypt was primarily intended for the Hebrews, but they were also aware that other people from other countries who want to escape Egypt were also allowed the same deliverance as the Hebrews.
Apparently, this Canaanite woman was well aware that she had been invited to the celestial supper. In addition, she was aware that, based on the words Jesus used, he was not referring to her as an useless dog.The Greek word for ″dog″ is a phrase used to refer to a puppy or a pet kept in the home. There was a different word for what we now refer to as a wild, undomesticated canine. When Jesus referred to her as a dog, he was referring to the dogs that ate precisely what this lady had requested—the leftovers from the master’s dinner.Household dogs ate the same food as the master and his family—but only after they had finished eating.
- Jesus commends her for her faith and for her patience in waiting for a response, and he cures her daughter as a result of her perseverance.
- We could feel uneasy in the presence of God, just as the Canaanite lady did.
- For many of us, we may feel like the Canaanite lady, that we are not welcomed by the religious establishment of our day.
- Initially, he may appear to be deafeningly quiet.
- But he will never refuse to accept us.
- It makes no difference to him what color we are, what gender we are, or where we are in life he offers us.
He will never refuse to accept us as his guests.
Why Does Jesus Call the Canaanite Woman a Dog?
The fact that Jesus referred to the Canaanite lady as a ″dog″ has always made me a little uncomfortable.Having heard all of the reasons, none of them felt very satisfying to me at the time. They appeared to be an attempt to get around the fact that Jesus said something really insulting to this woman. However, when our associate pastor was preaching on this chapter a few nights ago, I observed something interesting.Until now, I’d never noticed this thread, and I believe it to be crucial to interpreting the text.
First, to understand why Jesus called the Canaanite woman a dog, you need to know a little about Tyre and Messianic expectations.
- Consider the following passage from the Psalms of Solomon, which are not included in the Bible: Purify Jerusalem from the nations that trample it underfoot in destruction, to expel sinners from the inheritance in wisdom and righteousness, to rub out the arrogance of the sinner like a potter’s vessel, to crush all their support with an iron rod; 27 to destroy lawless nations by the word of his mouth, to cause Gentiles to flee from his face at his threat, and to reprove sinners by the word of their heart.
- 27 (See Pss.
- 17:25-27 for further information.) This was a prophecy about the coming of the Messiah.
When he arrives, he will go into areas like Tyre, which is the absolute epitome of paganism, and demolish it.You’d expect a Messiah to show up in such a despicable area, name everyone dogs, and then flee, perhaps lighting a match on the way out. While Mark’s Gospel presents a different view of the Messiah, it is a compelling one.He had just finished speaking to the Pharisees about what it means to be defiled. It’s not about what’s on the exterior, but rather about what’s on the inside. That type of rhetoric would lead to the arrival of a Messiah in Tyre, who would bring salvation rather than wrathful reprimand.
However, after Jesus reaches Tyre, he begins to sound more and more like the Messiah of the Psalms of Solomon, rather than the sort of Messiah described in the Gospel of Mark. What’s going on?Some may argue that Jesus is now putting this woman’s faith to the test.Observers will point out that Jesus refers to the scavenging dog with a phrase that literally means ″puppy.″ And those are important topics to bring up because I believe Jesus is addressing to the lady in parable form here.
- And, thus far in the gospel of Mark, she is the only one who has been able to comprehend his tale in its entirety.
- However, the most important word in this paragraph is not ″dog,″ but rather ″bread.″ That is, in fact, the question that this entire section is dedicated to.
- Is it for whom is the blessing of Messiah intended?
- Who will be able to take pleasure in his reign?
- If you ask the Pharisees, they will tell you that it is they who are the children of Israel.
- If the Gentiles don’t change their ways and become like the Pharisees, then to heck with them.
It is unlikely that Messiah bread will be poured upon a city like Tyre.As a result, Jesus used this phrasing—and, yeah, I believe he employs the diminutive phrase here in order to engage her into the tale. You don’t just grab the food from the kids and feed it to the puppy dog, right?Who is eligible to receive the bread of Messiah?
- According to Matthew’s narrative, others surrounding Jesus are admonishing the lady to be quiet.
- She’s a non-qualified Gentile, to put it mildly.
- A person who has been defiled will not be able to benefit from the healing ministry of the Messiah.
- She’d be better off returning home and seeking another treatment…perhaps her paganism may be of assistance.
- People who are defiled do not receive Messiah’s food.
The Canaanite lady, on the other hand, sees the big picture in this entire manner of thinking, and she is absolutely correct.Who has the authority to place a limit on Messiah’s bread? Is it reasonable to think that the children would starve if the puppy receives a few crumbs? She’s only asking for a sliver of bread.
Just a smidgeon of his clothing was visible.Without a doubt, there is plenty Messiah to go around. That is, after all, the entire idea of this paragraph.
That’s why Mark and Matthew placed it in this location.Listed below are the reasons why I am convinced that you are on the correct track: What in the world is the point of include two miraculous feedings in the gospels? We understand that Jesus is able to feed people despite their lack of resources.
But have you noticed where these feedings take place? One is located in Jewish territory, while the other is located in Gentile land.I don’t believe this is a coincidence.I also don’t believe it’s a coincidence that the phrase chortazo (″be fed″) comes just once in the gospel of Mark, and that it appears in both of the miraculous feedings.
So, yes, I believe that this Canaanite woman is about to face a test of faith of some sort. There is some clever wordplay going on here. But, perhaps most importantly, Jesus is instructing his disciples on what it means to really be the Bread of Life.
- It implies that He is sufficient.
- And he doesn’t have to be kept hidden away for fear that he won’t be enough to be freely handed out to both Jews and Gentiles at the appropriate time.
- Messiah travels to Tyre in order to deliver the food of salvation.
- Have you forgotten the lesson of the loaves and fishes?
- Jesus is sufficient.
I’d also be remiss if I didn’t offer a shout-out to James Edwards for his wonderful remark on Mark. This article about the Canaanite woman was first published on this site, as well.
Why does Jesus refer to the Canaanite woman as a dog?
- Specifically, Matthew 15:21-28 is where the section in dispute appears.
- Our Lord is contacted by a gentile Canaanite lady (also known as the Syro-Phoenician woman), whose daughter has been afflicted by a demon, and our Lord responds by granting her wish.
- On first hearing their talk, Our Lord appears to be antagonistic and uncompassionate; yet, drawing such a judgment is antithetical to Jesus’ character and is unworthy of our attention.
- This passage is, without a doubt, difficult to understand.
Understanding the broader cultural background will be beneficial.First and foremost, Jesus’ message was to the people of the covenant, i.e., the Jews, who were eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Messiah.Although technically granted after Our Lord’s ascension, the mission to the gentiles did not begin until the day of Pentecost, when Our Lord stated, ″Go forth and make disciples of all countries″ (Mt 28:18-20).His openness to the gentiles, however, had previously been demonstrated by His treating the centurion’s servant boy, to name a few examples (Mt 8:5-13).For the second time, Jews saw gentiles as ″dogs.″ To refer to someone as a ″dog″ was considered a terrible insult. The Jews used terms such as ″gentile dog,″ ″infidel dog,″ and subsequently, ″Christian dog″ to refer to non-Jews.
Jesus, on the other hand, used the diminutive version of the word ″dog,″ which is more accurately translated as ″puppy.″ So, instead of referring to her as the demeaning ″junk yard dog,″ he refers to her as a ″lovable puppy.″ (Keep in mind that the English translation does not reflect this discrepancy between the Greek and English texts.) One would also have to consider how Jesus came to say this particular sentence. He must not have meant ″dog″ in a derogatory or mocking manner. He most likely stated that with a sly grin on his face. For example, calling someone a ″rascal″ would be disparaging if used in a literal sense, but I recall calling my nephew (when he was a toddler) ″you little rascal,″ of course in a loving manner.
- It’s possible that Our Lord was making fun of the common Jewish slang when he said this.
- Most essential is the lady’s faith and her tenacity, which is expressed as follows: ″Oh woman, tremendous is your faith!
- Allow it to be done for you in the manner that you choose.″ As a result, at the end of the story, Our Lord commends the gentile ″dog″ for having faith and endurance that much excelled that of the Jews.
Why did Jesus call the Canaanite woman a dog?
- Therefore, Jesus compares the lady to a dog because she will ″consume″ every type of meat provided to her and ascribe equal value to it all since she is a ″Canaanite,″ as Jesus describes her ethnicity.
- As a result, she is referred to as ″a lady of immense faith,″ despite the fact that ″faith″ does not simply mean ″believing in anything.″ It implies to have faith in and to be able to rely on someone.
- This narrative takes place in Galilee, which was famed for its fishing towns during the time of the events described in this story.
- Because there were no automobiles or trucks available, everything had to be carried by hand or on the back of a donkey to its destination.
After being captured, fish would be cleaned as soon as possible, and it would frequently be utilized before it had the time to develop an unpleasant scent. This particular woman hails from Canaan, which at the time was well-known for its grapes.Israelis were able to enjoy the high life in Egypt due of the abundance of wine, which was one of the most important exports from the Jewish state. The mother recognizes Jesus as a famous healer and brings him all of her ailing children in the hopes that he would be able to treat them. When Jesus explains that only God can bring eternal life, she believes him to be the Son of David and invites him to her home to share his message with her family. In order for someone to be saved, they must place their faith in Jesus with all of their heart.
Sometimes we give up on individuals too quickly – we believe they are hopeless when, in reality, they may only require compassion and kindness to get them through.
What does the faith of the Canaanite woman mean?
- The Canaanite lady had a firm belief in God’s power and goodness.
- And she was certain that Jesus was the only one who could provide true mercy and complete healing.
- According to Jesus’ words in the gospel reading, salvation was only for the Jewish people.
- Jesus was taken aback by the woman’s assurance; it was incredible faith from someone who was not Jewish.
What Jesus did not state, however, is that only Jews are capable of being saved. His response to her query demonstrated that everyone who places their faith in him would be rescued.Taking hope all the way to the end is what faith is all about. It is the belief that, even if God does not provide you with what you desire when you desire it, he will provide you with what you require when you require it.This must have appeared insane to the Canaanite lady, who had been healed yet was still suffering from her disease despite the fact that she had been healed. However, she was confident in God’s ability to follow his promises, and she held out hope that she would be cured for good.
This is why faith works in times of joy even when we don’t believe it can function in times of grief or rejection. Our heavenly Father knows what is in our hearts, and he always comes through for those who put their confidence in him.Despite her protests, Jesus followed through on his promise to her and granted her miracle request. Her faith enabled her to see something that reality could have veiled from her vision – the fact that everyone has the potential to be rescued (Romans 10:13).
- You will be saved as long as you believe in Jesus’ death on the cross and his resurrection from the dead (John 3:16).
Woes to the unrepentant cities – Wikipedia
- In the area surrounding the northern bank of the Sea of Galilee, there were three cities that had not repented.
- The gospels of Matthew and Luke relate Jesus’ message of woe to the unrepentant cities of Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum, which are located near the northern side of the Sea of Galilee and were refused to repent by the people of those places.
- According to the passage in Matthew’s gospel, ″Jesus then proceeded to openly condemn the towns in which he had performed many of his miracles because they had refused to repent.″ He was referring to the cities in which he had performed many of his miracles because they had refused to repent.
- ″Chorazin, may your days be numbered!
Bethsaida, may your days be numbered!Among Tyre and Sidon, if the marvels that have been performed in you had been performed there, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. However, I assure you that Tyre and Sidon will have a far easier time of it on the day of judgment than you will! And you, Capernaum, will you be raised to the heights of heavenly glory? No, you shall be sent into the depths of Hades!Because, if the marvels performed among you had been performed in Sodom, they would have lasted to this day as well.
But I assure you that the land of Sodom will have a far easier time on the day of judgment than you!″ (Matthew 11:20–24; Mark 10:20–24) It is worth noting that the three cities listed are all located close north of the Sea of Galilee.Chorazin is not referenced in the Gospels in any other context.Bethsaida is the hometown of Philip, Andrew, and Peter, and it is also the location where Jesus healed a blind man.In contrast, the town of Capernaum, which is referenced several times in the Gospels and was the setting for many of Jesus’ healings and miracles, was for a time the focal point of his public ministry.
- Tire and Sidon were towns upon whom the prophets of the Old Testament sent God’s punishment, according to the biblical text.
- For centuries, Sodom had been known as the city that God had dramatically destroyed because of its immorality during the time of Abraham, according to the Book of Genesis.
- In essence, Jesus is drawing a contrast between three Jewish towns where he has performed numerous miracles and three Gentile cities known for such extraordinary wickedness as to deserve God’s destruction, stating that the former will be judged more harshly on the Day of Judgment because of their greater unwillingness to repent on their part.
- According to medieval texts, these cities are linked with the Antichrist.
- According to the Apocalypse of Pseudo-Methodius, which is a commentary on the above-mentioned Gospel narrative, the Antichrist ″shall be conceived in Chorazin, be born in Bethsaida, and begin to govern in Capernaum,″ among other places.
A collection of Jesus’ critiques of the Pharisees and the scribes may be found in the book of Woes of the Pharisees.
