A massive rally was conducted in an athletic stadium on February 5, 1961, during Billy Graham’s one-day visit to Tampa, Florida, as part of his tour of the United States.Mr.George Beverly Shea performed as the sole soloist for the event, and it was my pleasure to speak with him afterwards about his song, I’d Rather Have Jesus.The following is the gist and content of what he told me about his song and its inspiration.″I penned the song I’d Rather Have Jesus in 1933,″ he explained.One evening, while I sat at the piano practicing, my mother approached me and handed me a piece of paper with a poem by Rhea Miller written on it.

She felt it was a very beautiful poem and asked me to recite it to her.She then challenged me to write a music for the verses, which I gladly accepted.I started playing as soon as a tune occurred to me.My first attempt at singing I’d Rather Have Jesus was successful, and I began singing for the first time, I’d Rather Have Jesus.″ I’d rather have Jesus than silver or riches.″ Rather than having untold wealth, I’d rather to be His.I would rather have Jesus than a house or a piece of property.I’d rather follow in the footsteps of His nail-pierced hands.
