Known for his portrayal of Jesus in The Chosen, a television drama series on the life of Jesus, Jonathan Roumie is an American actor who was born in New York City. He also works as a voice actor.

Early life

Roumie was born and raised in New York City, New York, and is a native of the city. His father is of Egyptian descent, while his mother is of Irish descent. Jonathan professes to be a Christian. His ancestors belonged to the Greek Orthodoxdenomination at the time of his birth. Following that, they became members of the Roman Catholic Church. He graduated with honors from the School of Visual Arts with a degree in cinema.

Career

Roumie has been in a number of television programs, including The Good Wife, As the World Turns, and Castle, among others. He is most recognized for his role as Jesus in the film The Chosen. ‘Once we were Slaves/The Two Thieves’ was his first appearance as Christ, in a traveling multi-media show about the life of St. Faustina titled Faustina: Messenger of Divine Mercy, and his second appearance as Christ was in ‘Once we were Slaves’. Roumie is also a co-producer, co-director, and main actor in The Last Days: The Passion and Death of Jesus, a live production about the passion of Christ that he co-wrote, co-directed, and performed in.

Celebrity Deathmatch is an MTV series in which Roumie has voiced a number of different characters.

He recorded his first original song, “Outta Time,” for the album Unbreakable, which he co-produced.

He is the founder and director of an entertainment fellowship for Christian entertainment industry people.

Personal life

Roumie has worked as a ministry leader and as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion in the Catholic Church during his time in the ministry. He is on the boards of directors of two non-profit media organizations: Catholics in Media Associates and the G.K. Chesterton Theatre Company, where he serves as vice president. Since 2009, he has been stationed in Los Angeles. In 2020, he was nominated for the Order of St. Gregory the Great, which is the highest honor bestowed by the Pope.

I also do a lot of voiceover work for video games, which has had an impact on my willingness to take on certain types of projects that could appear gratuitous in some elements of the genre, whether it’s violence, profanity, or something along those lines.

Having an organic shift in my desire to participate in a mode of storytelling as an actor and a player that uplifts people and the human spirit, that demonstrates to people that Hollywood is more than just R-rated films filled with profanity and all sorts of stuff that kids shouldn’t watch or that even teenagers shouldn’t be exposed to, has been a natural progression for me.
