Bridge x2

In the name of Jesus, we pray Every apprehension has been dispelled. Nothing can stand in the way of your unfading love, and I will never be able to escape it. I’m unable to remove it. I’m not going to deny it. You’re going to be here for a while.

Chorus 1 x2

In this hymn, God demonstrates his ability to remove uncertainty and fear from a person’s life and replace them with peace and hope. This song was created for a great friend of ours who passed away recently. She had recently experienced the death of her spouse, after only three months of marriage. She didn’t know who Jesus was, but she was interested in learning more about Him. That there is hope and strength in the name of Jesus, as expressed in the lyrics of this hymn, was exactly what our team wanted her to know.

That same writer, who had brought his friend’s story to the table, would lose his father, as well as two of his closest friends, only a few months later.

The Story Behind the Song ‘When I Say Jesus’

The 29th of August, 2018. Mike Pickens, a longtime friend and coworker of mine, went away on this day in 2011. He had worked as the sound engineer for my band for nine years and had become a member of my extended family. We’d make regular pit stops at my mother’s house on our travels, and by the second or third time he’d been there, he’d started referring to her as his mother. My family was won over by his compassion. Mike has only recently begun to rediscover his sense of purpose in life. Amy, the love of his life, had been married to him only five months before.

  • All of that came tumbling down, however, when Mike had a heart attack.
  • His body was unable to recuperate from the 11-day battle it had waged against the disease.
  • She began to inquire about Jesus and his teachings.
  • And when she inquired as to whether I would preside over the burial, I happily agreed.
  • I saw the experience as a chance to be open and transparent with myself and others.
  • After I concluded, I was approached by a group of Mike’s friends who were struggling to comprehend the message I had just delivered.
  • I was aware that God was at work in all of this.

She was perplexed as to how she was going to proceed without Mike.

He will see you through this.

While things appear difficult right now, there is a silver lining to all of this.” I was well aware that giving advise was far simpler than putting it into action.

I assured her that the truth could be found in His Word.

After leaving Mike’s burial service, I traveled to Nashville to join our Life.Church songwriting team for the next few weeks.

It was unavoidable.

It was before we started writing that I prayed, imploring God to provide the appropriate words.

As we got started with the writing, I shared Amy’s experience with the group.

“And I will accomplish everything you ask in my name, so that the Father may be exalted in the Son,” states John 14:13-14 in the New International Version.

The name of Jesus, on the other hand, is a game changer!

The entire speech was all I wished I had been able to say to Amy the day before at Mike’s funeral.

It takes even a whisper to break past my doubts when I declare Jesus I’ll keep going until all of my dread is gone.

I had no idea that the healing tale that this music was bringing about was really just getting started.

I went to my friend’s studio to wrap off a project that I was working on with my brother.

He and his friends had gone out to dinner and were fooling about like they often did.

My mobile phone rang just as we were about to begin.

It was my wife who called.

My father had died a few months before.

He was still in his early twenties.

I was scarcely able to speak.

It was only a 15-minute journey over to my father’s place when we piled into his vehicle.

The moment we arrived at the house, a law enforcement officer welcomed us at the front door and informed us that our father had been missing for a few hours.

I recall looking at him for a brief period before hysterical crying seized my entire body.

The feelings of despair and amazement were nearly too much to handle.

My mind was racing with a slew of questions.

I invited my father to a Christmas Eve service at my church in 2013.

I informed my father that we would be doing an incredible opening for our worship act that he would not want to miss.

I saw him go in with my grandma and kept an eye on him for virtually the whole time we were in worship.

Once my father heard the sermon, he raised his hand and confessed his faith in Jesus as his Lord and Savior.

That was the exact time that my father pronounced the words “Jesus.” I was able to recall who my father belonged to in an instant.

I said His name in hushed tones and thought of His promise to my father.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him may not perish but have everlasting life,” reads John 3:16 in the New International Version.

Those lines from a song I’d composed a few months previously sounded true: “You’re never more than a word away,” the song’s lyrics said.

It was earlier that day that their son opened fire on our drummer and best friend, killing him and his wife as a result.

There were times when it felt like it was nearly too much to handle.

A feeling of sadness evolved into rage, which then evolved into submission.

Amy and I happened to run into one other at a funeral for a buddy.

My mother emphasized that she wished to be there for me and my brother since we had been there for her a few months previously.

“Can you tell me what you got?” I inquired.

She stated that she finally comprehended what we had discussed six months prior to this.

It seemed as if the path of this thinking and this music had come to a complete stop at this point.

In the midst of that stressful month, I clung to the second stanza of the song, which goes as follows: You’re on the same page as me.

I’m surrounded by the evidence of Your triumph.

“When I Say Jesus” is more than a song; it’s a movement.

Darkness, humiliation, dread, and wickedness are shattered by the name of Jesus. It is the name that precedes all other names. It is a name that you can rely on in every event or circumstance. It is the only name that is significant. Every day, I give thanks to God for the lovely name of Jesus.
