On many occasions, it is difficult to see the road ahead. We can only take things one day at a time, and that is all we can do. Marijohn Wilkin wrote the song “One Day at a Time” when she was fifty-three years old, and it has since become a classic. As a songwriter for country music, she had achieved tremendous success by this point in her career. She had, however, experienced a great deal of grief and loss. Her first spouse was a fighter pilot who was killed in action during World War II. Later in life, she suffered with drinking as well as despair.

She sought the assistance of a local clergyman, who was unclear of the best way to assist her.
“Have you ever considered about thanking God for your problems?” the preacher inquired at some point in the conversation.
Sitting down to the keyboard, she sang out the whole chorus to the song “One Day at a Time.” She understood that the song was a prayer and that it would go on to become a hit.
The words for what would become the second verse came quickly to mind.
Wilkin felt she needed to get the song off to a good start.

Considering the circumstances surrounding the composition of the song “One Day at a Time,” it is an understatement. While Marijohn Wilkin’s journey from one mountaintop of joy and achievement to another was fraught with severe mental agony, the lowlands in between were filled with even greater joy and success. Ernest and Karla Melson had just one kid, Marijohn, who was born to them in Kemp, Texas, in 1920.

Ernest played the violin, the piano, or led the singing at the First Baptist Church of Sanger, Texas, and Marijohn swiftly followed in her father’s musical footsteps.
Her father taught her how to play the piano when she was five years old, and one year later, when her hands had grown a bit larger, she was able to quickly imitate the tunes she had heard him play.
She was responsible for a wide range of responsibilities, from shop deliveries to work in the factory.
Marijohn graduated as salutatorian of her high school class, despite the fact that she worked long hours at the bakery.
She accepted the offer.
She was the first female member of the University Cowboy Band while she attended Hardin-Simmons, and she is the only female member to this day.
Marijohn’s husband, Bedford Russell, whom she had married two months after graduation, was killed in action during World War II in South Africa, where he was serving as a pilot.

Marijohn was able to rise beyond her grief and continue working as a schoolteacher and singing as an alto soloist in her church choir.

In 1977, at the age of thirty-seven, she relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where she rose to prominence as one of the most prolific songwriters in the country music industry and went on to form Buckhorn Music Publishers.

She penned more than four hundred country songs, several of which reached the top of the country music charts after being released.

Kris Kristofferson worked as a writer for her while she was with Buckhorn Music.

Marijohn stopped going to church in the midst of the fame, money, and success she was experiencing as a country music composer, and she finally became hooked to alcohol.

God, on the other hand, was kind and spared her life.

Following is the narrative behind the song, as provided to me by the artist: “I was completely baffled as to why I was achieving such tremendous success in the country music industry.

I had a strong sense that I had been called to be a gospel writer, but I couldn’t seem to make the transition successfully.

I was present wherever anything was ‘happening,’ assisting in making it happen.

“I’d had enough!” A young preacher agreed to let me speak with him when I approached him at a little church where I had stopped.

I arrived in my brand new midnight blue Cadillac, decked up in a full-length mink coat, glittering jewelry, and my cowboy boots, which I had purchased recently.

He took one glance at me and stated, ‘You don’t appear to be experiencing any financial difficulties.’ ‘No, I don’t,’ I said.

‘Well, I guess I am,’ I explained.

‘I’m not sure,’ I admitted.

‘Have you ever considered giving thanks to God for your difficulties?’ he inquired.

I sat down at the piano and proceeded to play and sing along with the whole chorus of ‘One Day at a Time’ in front of the audience.

‘Please give me the strength to do what I have to do every day,’ I pray.

Afterwards, my ‘Nashville mentality’ exclaimed, ‘Wait, that’s a hit!’ after I had completed singing.

It wasn’t until later that I realized the song was a prayer that I found some solace.” I scribbled the chorus on the back of an envelope as quickly as my fingers could move.

As far as I’m aware, if Jesus is watching down, the situation is far worse now than it was then.’ I wasn’t quite confident that the Lord was aware of my whereabouts.

Really, I wasn’t sure whether God was aware of my whereabouts at the time.

I got the second verse and the chorus written out, but I couldn’t seem to get the music to start correctly for some reason.

They had recently scored a great success with ‘Why Me, Lord?’ penned by Kris, and they were riding high.

I dialed Kris’ number and requested him to assist me with the first verse of the song.

‘Way to go!’ I said.

“The lines just flitted out of each of our mouths.” Originally recorded by Marilyn Sellers, the song went on to become the number one hit in a number of categories after being released.

There were other nations where it was among the top 10, including England, Ireland, and two other countries where it was the number one pop hit.

It has long ago reached the six hundred mark in terms of artist records, and it has made its way into the Southern Gospel Music genre as well.

The song “One Day at a Time” appeared on her debut studio album, which was named I Have Return.

She is now a contented, alcohol-free Christian who has composed about three hundred gospel songs in her life thus far.

She shared the stage with other award winners, including Brock Speer and James Blackwood, both of whom are well-known in the world of Southern Gospel Music.

If there was ever a moment when we had to take things one day at a time, it is now, as the coronavirus is causing the world as we know it to come crashing down around us. I feel like I’m under house arrest, just like so many others who are adhering to tight sheltering in place orders. I’m reminded of an old elephant joke: “How do you eat an elephant?” “One bite at a time,” says the narrator.

However, on one particular day this week, as I waited in the waiting room outside the doctor’s office, I was struck with fear about the future.
I understood that it would be a long time before I could enjoy anything as simple as a social excursion with friends.
That the virus is extremely infectious was made terrifyingly evident to me the next morning when I read in the newspaper about a person who contracted it by sitting in a church seat that had been used earlier that day by someone who had the virus.
It’s possible that tomorrow may never be mine because yesterday has passed away, Sweet Jesus.
And, every now and again, we may “put ourselves right” by making a mental correction.
We can’t even promise you a certain day.

The phrase “live in the now” has been one of my most essential resolutions for the previous two years.

However, all of this fretting will do absolutely nothing in terms of resolving the situation.

We let it all wash away in a sea of our own self-induced panic.

As much as I enjoy Patsy Cline’s rendition of “One Day at a Time,” I no longer live my life by the mantra of “one day at a time.” Instead, I’m taking stock of each moment and attempting to find joy in the here and now of my life.

However, this does not imply that the day is completely devoid of pleasure.

I take notice of how the day feels on my skin and take a few steps back to ensure that I don’t miss any of nature’s joys.

When I was riding my bike through the neighborhood and arrived to the highway, I had to cross over to the pavement to avoid getting hit by a car.

She didn’t even see me as I got off the bike and moved it up to her side of the room.

That, too, was a lesson for me, a lesson in not putting blinders on while going about my business.
