O glorious day, when I made my decision to follow Thee, my Savior and my God! May this glistening heart be filled with joy, and may it spread its ecstasy across the world. When Jesus took away my sins, it was a wonderful day indeed! He taught me how to observe and pray, as well as how to live joyfully every day: “Wonderful day, happy day, when Jesus cleansed my sins away!” O joyful tie that binds my vows to Him Who deserves all of my affection! Allow joyful anthems to flood His dwelling, while I make my way to His precious sanctuary.

What does it mean that our sins are washed away?

QuestionAnswer When the Bible speaks of our sins being wiped away, it is referring to the fact that we have been forgiven. Our sins, which had soiled us, have been cleansed from us. We are no longer spiritually corrupt because of the love of God through Christ; instead, we are declared righteous in the eyes of God. The notion of having our sins washed away is established for the first time in the Bible’s Old Testament. In His instructions for consecrating the Levites, God stated: “Thus you shall do to them in order for them to be cleansed: sprinkle the water of purification upon them, and let them go over their entire body with a razor, and wash their clothing, and purify themselves” (Numbers 8:7).

God has chosen to ignore our sin and to exile it from His presence (Psalm 103:12).

Even if he does not know his biological parents well, does not comprehend their home rules, and does not appear to be deserving of their affection in any way, an adopted kid becomes a son the minute the judge proclaims him to be so.

The same is true for us.

Through the course of time, we learn to know and love our Father, assimilate into our Christian family, and put into practice what we have already been recognized to be in position to do (2 Peter 3:18; 1 John 3:3).

The Story Behind O Happy Day

“O Happy Day” was composed by Philip Doddridge (1702-1751), an English Non-Conformist clergyman, which means that he disagreed with the Church of England’s teachings. “Rejoicing in our Covenant,” as Doddridge originally titled the song, was the inspiration for the title. “It is an engagement with God.” Throughout the song, there are several imagery of the covenant, which was a concept that was particularly significant to the nonconformist and dissenting clergy, and which they would eventually bring with them to New England as part of Puritan theology.

Some believe that Doddridge wrote his hymns as summaries of his sermons in the hopes of assisting the congregation in expressing their reaction to what he was teaching.
