Deuteronomy 27:19 is a biblical verse.

What Does the Bible Say about Refugees and Foreigners?

When faced with difficulties and confusion, the call of the Christ-follower is to seek clarity via God’s holy Word. The two most important channels via which Jesus pulls us into his knowledge are Scripture and prayer. As a result, on World Refugee Day, we look only to the Bible for guidance and solutions. We can get a better understanding and formulation of our ideas about persons who are referred to in Scripture as “the stranger,” “the foreigner,” or “the alien” by reading the following scriptures, which can be found throughout the Old and New Testaments.

Scripture is God-breathed, and we must allow it to affect us in the same way that prayer does.

To conclude, God clearly has a lot to say regarding refugees and outsiders, and our prayer is that we will be receptive to the messages he is trying to communicate.

In the sense that I was hungry and you provided me with food, I was thirsty and you provided me with something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me in, I needed clothing and you provided them to me, I was sick and you cared after me, and I was in prison and you came to see me. 7 Inconvenient Biblical Facts About “Illegal” Immigrants

Some Evangelical Christians are particularly adept at cherry-picking Bible verses that promote their political agenda while disregarding those problematic parts that conflict with their worldview, as demonstrated by the following examples. Examples include the imprisonment of Kim Davis, a Kentucky Court Clerk who was held in contempt of court for preventing the issuing of marriage licenses to same-sex couples in her state, which has caused outrage among many Christians in the United States over the past several weeks.

Interestingly, many of the same Christians who are vocal in their opposition to the acceptance of homosexuality in society are also vocal in their opposition to illegal immigration.

Of course, this is because America is a nation of “laws,” and everyone is required to follow the rules of the road.

The following are seven awkward Biblical facts that serve as a reminder of God’s attitude toward the “foreigners” who live among us.

1. God’s people are instructed not to oppress immigrants.

“Do not mistreat or harass a foreigner, for you yourselves were aliens in Egypt,” says Exodus 22:21. In Exodus 23:9 we are told, “Do not persecute aforeigner; you yourselves know what it is like to be foreigners because you were strangers in Egypt.”

2. God’s people are to treat immigrants just like citizens.

When a foreigner comes to live among you in your country, do not abuse him or her,” says Leviticus 19:33–34. The immigrant who has taken up residence among you must be regarded as if he or she were a native-born citizen of your country. Because you were foreigners in Egypt, you needed to love them as much as you did yourselves. “I am the LORD your God,” says the LORD. The Bible says in Deuteronomy 23:16, “Let them reside among you anywhere they choose and in whatever town they want.” “Do not put them under any pressure.” In Ezekiel 47:22,23, the Bible says, “You are to allocate it as an inheritance for yourselves and for the foreigners who are live among you and have children.” You are to treat them as if they were native-born Israelites, and they are to be given an inheritance among the tribes of Israel together with you, as well.

It is your responsibility to provide them with their inheritance wherever they may live,” says the Sovereign LORD.

3. God’s people are to love and help foreigners as they would their own poor brother.

“Do not mistreat a foreigner who comes to live among you in your land,” Leviticus 19:33,34 says. This means that any foreigner who comes to live with you must be treated as though he or she is a member of your own family. Because you were foreigners in Egypt, you needed to love them as much as you did yourselves. The LORD your God is speaking to you. “Allow them to reside among you anywhere they choose and in whichever town they choose,” says Deuteronomy 23:16. ” Never put them under any kind of stress.

It is your responsibility to provide them with their inheritance wherever they may be,” says the Sovereign LORD.

4. God expects His people to show justice to foreigners.

“Do not take advantage of a hired worker who is destitute and in need, whether that worker is a fellow Israelite or a foreigner who is resident in one of your communities,” Deuteronomy 24:14-15,17. You must pay them their salary each day before sundown, because they are impoverished and rely on it for survival. Otherwise, they may bring a complaint against you to the LORD, and you will be found guilty of wrongdoing. Never deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, nor take the widow’s robe as a form of bribe.” Zechariah 7:10 – “Do not harass the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the destitute,” says the prophet.

5. Those who seek to withhold justice from foreigners are to be cursed.

The Bible says in Deuteronomy 27:19, “Cursed is anybody who withholds justice from a foreigner, a fatherless child, or a widow.” “Amen!” will be echoed by the entire congregation. “Therefore, I will come to put you on trial,” says Malachi 3:5. Those who rob laborers of their pay, who abuse widows and orphans, and who deny justice to foreigners among you will come before me quickly, but they need not be afraid of me,” declares the LORD Almighty.” “Do not be afraid of me,” says the LORD Almighty.

6. God equates oppressing foreigners with mistreating orphans and widows.

“They have treated father and mother with disdain in you; in you they have tormented the foreigner and abused the fatherless and the widow,” says Ezekiel 22:7. Zechariah 7:10 – “Do not harass the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the destitute,” says the prophet. “Do not conspire to do ill against one another.” Psalm 146:9 says, “The LORD keeps watch over the stranger and provides for the fatherless and widow, but he ruins the plans of the wicked.”

7. God equates oppressing foreigners with the shedding of innocent blood and idolatry.

Jeremiah 7:6– “if you do not oppressthe foreigner, the fatherless or the widow and do not spill innocent blood in this land, and if you do not pursue other gods to your own harm.” Jeremiah 22:3– “This is what the LORD says: Do what is reasonable and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been plundered. Do no harm or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow, and do not spill innocent blood in this place.” THE ABOVE VERSESmake it very obvious that God’s stance towards the foreigner is substantially different than that presented by American Evangelicals.

What the Bible says about welcoming refugees

In an executive order signed on Friday, Jan. 27, President Donald Trump prohibited refugees from seven countries with a primarily Muslim population from entering the United States. Refugees from Syria, on the other hand, will be barred from entering the country for the next 120 days. He had made a commitment to the United States to build a wall on the country’s border with Mexico just two days before. Soon after the order was issued, Mexican President Enrique Pea Nieto said that he would postpone a planned visit to the United States.

This would allow him to fulfill his campaign pledge that Mexico would really pay for the wall’s construction, despite the protestations of the country’s southern neighbor at the time.

Both broad and more specific concerns about what it means to welcome the stranger are being debated here.

And, like other Christians, I look to the Bible for direction when it comes to determining the most appropriate way to welcome the foreigner.

We will all be strangers, sometime

According to the Bible, we have a duty to treat foreigners with decency and kindness – and to say so emphatically and unambiguously. The Old Testament is a collection of writings from the time of Abraham to the time of Jesus Christ. The biblical scholarAlice Laffey stated in “Love the Stranger,” an article written for the annual meeting of the College Theological Society in 1991, that the Hebrew words “gûr” and “gor” are the ones most often glossed as referring to the “stranger,” though they are also translated as “newcomer” and “alien” or “resident alien,” respectively.

For example, the book of Deuteronomy establishes the obligation that farmers set aside a portion of their product every third year for strangers, widows, and orphans in order to fulfill the law.

The needs of hospitality are frequently reaffirmed throughout the Hebrew Bible in dramatic ways, such as in the narrative from the book of Judges, in which a host sells his own daughter to ruffians in order to protect his visitor.

The stranger is Jesus in disguise

The verse from Matthew 25:31-40, which is the most often cited text in the New Testament, which Christians read in continuity with the Hebrew Bible or “The Old Testament,” is the most frequently cited section in the New Testament that deals with welcoming the foreigner. Many academics believe that the terms “stranger” and “neighbor” in the New Testament are really equivalent in meaning.

Apart from that, it is said in the letters written by Paul of Tarsus (who was one of the most renowned of early Christian missionaries), which are known as the Pauline “Epistles,” that in Christ, “there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female.” According to this viewpoint, the phrase “one in Christ” should be read literally, meaning that there are no fundamental distinctions in type between human beings in general.

Bible is unambiguous in its message

The strong admonitions against treating strangers with decency have, of course, existed alongside actions that would appear to indicate the opposite attitude. For example, Christians have sanctioned pogroms against Jews as well as slavery, imperialism, and colonialism, despite the fact that they would have affirmed biblical principles regarding caring for those who appear to be “other” or “alien.” The message conveyed by the Bible is unambiguous. When it comes to the specific questions of building a wall on America’s southern border with Mexico or welcoming immigrants and refugees, some Christians would argue that doing so does not violate any biblical precepts concerning hospitality to the stranger, because the issue is one of legality, and because a significant number of Christians did indeed support Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

Another school of thought holds that cities and educational institutions should be designated as “safe zones” for illegal immigrants, which is diametrically opposed to the current administration’s viewpoint.

The principles of welcoming the foreigner, according to my interpretation of the Bible, are broad-reaching and unequivocal in their application.
