Is ‘What a Beautiful Name’ Biblical?

I had a minor mishap. When I sought to locate the Billboard top 100 for Christian music for my first review, I did not take the time to check the date on the chart. However, it turns out that NF’s “Let You Down” peaked at number one on October 7, 2017, rather than the day I began evaluating lyrics. As a result, I will finish my second evaluation of the number one song for the week of January 7, 2018. It is a name that is recognizable to me, Hillsong Church. Several of their pieces of music are often used in worship songs by my church.

The song What a Beautiful Name by Hillsong Worship is now ranked first on the Billboard Top 100 Christian Songs chart as of the time of writing.

1. What message does the song communicate?

The name of Jesus is a lovely, amazing, and powerful combination of letters. He is the Creator, one with the Father, a rescuer, who brings the Kingdom of God to earth, who is loving, who has beaten death, who is without rival or equal, who is the name above all names, who is a king, against whom nothing can stand. The opening lyric of Verse 2 is the source of the song’s difficulty. “You didn’t want Heaven without us,” the message reads. Despite the fact that I am convinced that Hillsong meant “You intended us to be in heaven,” the phrase has an air of man-centeredness to it, as if paradise could not exist without us.

This verse combines the principle presented in Matthew 6:13 (above) and intermixes it with Philippians 2:9, which, while slightly taken out of context, is nonetheless biblically true in its application.

Many people will not grasp the rest of the song unless they have studied Christianity in depth; nonetheless, the fundamental point of the song will not be lost on those who are not familiar with the religion. A common misunderstanding of the first sentence of the second Verse is that some people believe that they are more important than even God! Score:7/10

4. What does this song glorify?

While this song exalts the name of Jesus, Hillsong’s interpretation of Verse 2 may lead people to unbiblical conclusions, thereby obscuring the message. Score:8/10

Final Comments

Hillsong Worship is an incredibly beautiful name. Although it is a breath of fresh air, it is not without its challenges. It is a work of art that is rich in Scripture and that does honor to the beauty, wonder, and power that comes from the name of Jesus. While I did not come across a single sentence that was not biblically or theologically sound, the opening line of Verse 2 may lead people to a man-centeredness that is not conducive to God’s glory. Despite the depth of theology contained inside this hymn, one single sentence makes it impossible to recommend for communal worship.
