A renovation ‘long overdue’
Around the year 325 A.D., Ruler Constantine, Rome’s first Christian emperor, dispatched officials to Jerusalem in order to identify Jesus’ tomb, according to historical records. The location to which they were instructed and where they constructed a shrine is now housed within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. However, the Holy Edicule — the shrine that surrounds the tomb — has been in desperate need of restoration for some years. “It was a project that had been overdue for a long time,” Dr.
After initially agreeing to restore the Edicule in 1959, it took cooperation from each patriarch of the three Christian communities responsible for the tomb (Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Franciscan order of the Catholic Church of Jerusalem, and Armenian Patriarchate) to finally complete the restoration in 2016.
The repair was carried out by an interdisciplinary team from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), and Dr.
Secrets of Christ’s Tomb, an explorer special that debuted on the National Geographic Channel on December 3, 2017, documented the restoration process on film and made it widely available.

According to her, the project was “a tremendous technological, scientific, cultural, political, and religious challenge.” Not only did Professor Moropoulou and her colleagues convince the three patriarchs to approve the refurbishment of their tomb, but they also finished the entire project in less than nine months, according to the professor.
Christ’s tomb ‘overwhelms the senses’
The study team had not intended to open the actual tomb until they discovered that they needed to finish the job within the site in order to prevent more harm later in the process. The patriarchs all agreed that something had to be done. The construction work began on the evening of October 26. The doors to the church were shut, so members of the team walked inside to raise a slab that covered the sacred bed on the floor. “When the riggers walked into the library to really open the stone covering, there was complete quiet,” Dr.

Kyriakos Lampropoulos, and Elisavet Tsilimantou, claimed that, despite having seen photographs and video recordings of the tomb, visiting inside “overwhelms the senses.” Those who visited noted that the “architecture, chanting, and smells transport you back in time.” While entering the Holy Edicule, make a bending motion to enter the holy tomb chamber and notice that everything is different from what you had expected, yet familiar due to the descriptions contained in the Gospels.
The team went on to say that seeing the sacred place was like “taking a journey through the timeline of human history.”
During the process of opening the tomb, the NTUA crew encountered technological difficulties that seemed to be beyond explanation. On October 26, 2016, the equipment displayed many discontinuities in their signals, which the researchers claimed they had not been able to identify or explain yet. Nevertheless, because Dr. Hiebert deals with technological issues on a daily basis, he was not startled by the hiccups and noticed that the remainder of the project ran well after that. In order to safeguard the holy bed and the holy rock, “the conservators were able to install a moisture barrier,” he explained, “so that once it was covered again, it would effectively be kept for the next 2,000 years.” Other discoveries, such as the revelation that the original walls of the cave around the tomb were still intact, astonished those present at the site even more than the tomb itself.

Was the tomb opened or closed when the women arrived?
According to the Apostle Paul, the resurrection determines whether Christianity is true or false. (1 Corinthians 15:17) Skeptics, on the other hand, point out that the resurrection tales in the Gospels are riddled with holes the size of swiss cheese. What is it about them that is so fraught with contradictions? One of their favorite logical fallacies is as follows: When the women came, did they find the tomb empty or closed? “Was the stone already moved aside when they arrived at the tomb (as recorded in Mark, Luke, and John), or was it plainly not (as recorded in Matthew)?” argues New Testament scholar Bart Ehrman.
Before we take the scholar’s word for it, let’s look at the texts ourselves
- During this time, they were joking among themselves, asking, “Who would roll aside the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” And as they looked up, they noticed that the stone had been pushed back—it was a huge one. (Matthew 16:3–4)
- And they discovered that the stone had been moved away from the tomb. (See also Luke 24:2)
- After that, on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene arrived at the tomb early in the morning, when it was still dark, and discovered that the stone had been removed from the tomb. (See also John 20:1)
So far, all three gospels (Mark, Luke, and John) report that the tomb was open when the ladies arrived. Here’s Matthew’s take on the situation: At the conclusion of the sabbath, as the sun started to rise toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to the tomb to pay their respects to Jesus. It was then that a big earthquake occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came down to roll back the stone from the entrance, where he then sat.
His visage shone like lightning, and his raiment was as white as snow; and the keepers trembled and were as still as dead men as a result of their terror of him. (4:1–4) (Matthew 28:1–4) So far, it appears like Bart and the other critics have a valid argument to make.
Getting a grip on the Greek
So, what exactly is going on here? Is Matthew implying that the ladies witnessed the angel descending down and rolling the stone away? Possibly. If Matthew comes after Mark, it appears that he is adding an additional element of supernatural ad hoc to the story. Despite the fact that it makes the story sound more impressive, we now have this apparent contradiction. But let us take Matthew’s words into consideration. When we first hear about the angel, the Greek participle introduces us to the chapter (gar).
“A main participle; properly, the act of appointing a cause.” In other words, it exists in order to provide an explanation for the earthquake and the set of circumstances in which the ladies found themselves.
because an angel of the Lord had fallen.” According to Weymouth, Matthew 28:2 reads as follows: “But to their astonishment, there had been a tremendous earthquake; because an angel of the Lord had descended from Heaven, and had come and rolled back the stone, and had sat thereon it.” And here’s Young’s Literal Translation, which is as close to a word-for-word Greek translation as you can get without resorting to paraphrase: When the messenger of the Lord, who had come down from heaven, sat on the stone, a big earthquake shook the earth.
“And lo, there came a great earthquake,” says the Bible.
It is not mentioned in the text.
OK, but where is Matthew getting his info from?
However, a question has arisen. Who could have told them this narrative of the stone rolling away and the guards falling out if it wasn’t the ladies themselves. That’s an excellent question. While we can’t say for certain, we can make a safe assumption in this case. In Matthew 28:11-15, we learn that the author was privy to certain information regarding the soldiers on the watch. What happened to them might have been caused by the same source, which could have been one of the guards himself.
Ehrman and critics like him are misreading the text here
Matthew 28:2-4 provides us with an explanation for why the ladies at the tomb discovered what they were looking for when they arrived. And there are no guards since the stone has been rolled away. Please understand that this is not intended to be a depiction of what the women witnessed. When Matthew is properly read, it appears that the stone had shifted before they arrived, and this appears to be what Matthew is stating. If you’re seeking for problems, here is the only place you’ll find a contradiction.

Crypt Believed to Be Jesus’ Tomb Opened for First Time in Centuries (Published 2016)
JERUSALEM (JTA) — The only supernatural force that could be seen was the flickering light from seven tapered candles on the table. Despite this, the mausoleum that lies at the heart of history has caught the imaginations of millions of people all around the world for centuries. For centuries, no one bothered to look inside the simple tomb in Jerusalem’s Old City. That is, until last week, when a team of specialists opened the tomb and discovered the limestone burial bed where, according to tradition, the body of Jesus Christ lay after his crucifixion and before his resurrection.

Matthew did not have Peter or the disciples come to the tomb at all, according to the Gospel of Matthew.
After spending time in the tomb, Peter returns home rather than returning to the disciples.
They then return to their respective residences. Nevertheless, Mary is still present, and she witnesses the appearance of two angels, followed by the appearance of Jesus, whom she does not know, and she engages in conversation with him.
