Born in Bethlehem

Jesus was foretold to be born of a virgin and to be born at Bethlehem (Micah 5:1-6), which was a town rather than a city at the time of his birth. Jesus’ Hometown

In light of the fact that Jesus’ parents had to travel from Galilee, namely from the town of Nazareth, to Bethlehem in order to be registered (Luke 2:3), we might assume that Nazareth was their hometown. Later in this chapter, Luke recounts that “Jesus advanced in knowledge and in stature, and in favor with God and man” (Luke 2:52).

Why Nazareth?

We could be perplexed as to why Jesus grew up in Nazareth, given that we know he did. In addition, because Nazareth was located exactly on the Roman Road, it made it simple for troops to be dispatched in any direction if necessary. This explains why there is such a huge number of Roman soldiers in the city. We have further scriptural support for Jesus growing up as a youngster in Nazareth because “the multitude cried out, ‘This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee,’ ” according to the Gospel of Matthew.

Archaeologists digging in Nazareth, in modern-day Israel, the hometown of Jesus, have discovered a house going back to the first century that was thought to be the location where Jesus was raised by his parents, Mary and Joseph. The home, which was dug into a rocky slope, is partially constructed of mortar-and-stone walls.

It is uncertain whether or not Jesus truly resided at the home in real life, but Dark believes that it is conceivable.

Dark explained that the structure was reconstructed in the 12th century, when Crusaders were in charge of the area, only to be destroyed again in the 13th century.

The return of the family of Jesus to Nazareth, also known as the return from Egypt, is mentioned in the accounts of Jesus’ early life that are contained in the canonical gospels of the New Testament. Both of the gospels that record Jesus’ birth agree that he was born in Bethlehem and subsequently migrated with his family to live in Nazareth when his parents died. The Gospel of Matthewtells the story of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus fleeing to Egypt to avoid being killed by Herod the Great for the killing of the infant boys at Bethlehem.

The Gospel of Luke, on the other hand, does not mention anything about the departure to Egypt, but it does mention that Joseph had previously lived in Nazareth and had returned there following Jesus’ presentation at the Temple.

Return from Egypt

The holy family returns from Egypt following Herod’s death, at some point in the future. Herod’s death is generally accepted to have occurred about 4 BCE, according to most experts. They moved on to Galilee after discovering that Herod Archelaushad had replaced his father as governor of Judea. Archelaus was well-known for his harshness, and in reaction to widespread public outcry, he was ousted by Augustus and sent to Vienne in Gaul in 6 AD. Herod Antipas, Archelaus’ brother, reigned over Galilee at the time.

Significance

In 1917, there was an alleged “Mary’s well” in Nazareth. As recorded in Matthew 2:23, Jesus’ return to Nazareth is claimed to be a fulfillment of the prophesied phrase, “He shall be known as a Nazarene.” Many interpreters believe that Matthew was referring to Isaiah 11:1, which states, “A shoot will spring out from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit” (NIV): the Hebrew word for “branch” isnezer. It is unclear which Old Testament text Matthew was referring to.

The return voyage of the family from Egypt has been a recurrent theme of artistic expression throughout history. These days, we rarely think to ourselves, “this person is older and possibly has something to teach me,” but rather, “this person is older and out of touch with society.” We should not be under the impression that our age is all-knowing.

Healthy Body

According to the Bible, he grew in strength and stature as a result of his experiences (Luke 2:52). Many depictions of Jesus show him as frail, pale, and anemic, but this is not the case in reality. He must have developed into a powerful and commanding figure. He was a valuable assistant to Joseph at the carpenter’s work and must have had a lot of stamina and resilience that enabled him later on in life to travel on foot for long travels, and preach for hours, despite having no house to return to at the end of the day for rest and seclusion.

As a result of all of this, it appears that Jesus must have had a healthy attitude toward his own body, and the same wholesome Biblical attitude must be ours as well.

It is critical that we take care of our bodies, despite the fact that we shouldn’t worship our bodies. Healthy eating, staying active and participating in sports, getting lots of fresh air, and abusing our bodies with alcohol, cigarettes, and narcotics are all recommended.

Most important of all

Jesus learnt to read (Luke 4:16-17) and write (John 8:6) when he was five years old, and he would have received instruction in the Torah in the synagogue as well as from his father from that age. His legal lessons were taught to him by the chazzan or officer of the synagogue, while he was sitting on the floor with the other boys in the synagogue or school building. He would have started with Leviticus and worked his way through the rest of the Pentateuch before reaching the prophets. It’s possible that the attendant who brought him the scroll in Luke 4:17 was the same person who had taught him to read earlier in life.

In addition, as he matured into a completely human being, it became increasingly clear to him that he was the Son of God and the Saviour of the world.
As a perfect man, this perfect kid, who had grown into an even more perfect man, was nailed to the cross of the Romans on a garbage pile just outside the city walls of Jerusalem.
Learning the scriptures and praying are important as we mature and attempt to navigate our way through this world, just as the Lord Jesus Christ did.
In believing and practicing the Word of God, we may be assured that no matter what we encounter in life, with all of its difficulties and challenges, God’s blessing and blessings will be upon us, and that God will work all things for our benefit.

Go to him

We can do so much more than simply look to the Lord Jesus as our example; we may turn to him for salvation and assistance. He now represents us before God in the capacity of our great high priest, and he does so as if he were one of us. Whoever is seated next to God recalls what it was like when his body changed, when he followed his parents in that humble house, when he had siblings, and when he played on the streets of that tough northern Israeli town. But even though Jesus Christ is in Heaven, when I pray to him from my bedroom or from my workplace or from Church or anywhere else, he remembers precisely what it was like to be me and argues my cause before God.

Possibly, you will have to confront and endure situations that are overpowering.

You can bring your heavy responsibilities to him, and he will relieve you of them.

Jesus’ Childhood

Jesus as a child

Jesus’ family life

Jesus grew up in a thriving, expanding family environment. The Gospel of Matthew makes it plain that Joseph and Mary did not have children before to the birth of Jesus (Matthew 1:24-25). The Bible, on the other hand, teaches us that Jesus had numerous younger half-siblings who were offspring of his parents, Joseph and Mary. Was Jesus a carpenter?

Jesus was raised in a religious home

His family was devoted to God’s instructions on the yearly religious holidays, which they observed without fail. For the feast of Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread, according to Luke, Jesus’ family would go to Jerusalem every year to be with him (Luke 2:41-42). Jesus was an exceptional Child

Jesus went through a natural maturing process similar to that of any growing boy, but He was specially endowed with God’s Spirit and favor from birth, allowing Him to be light years ahead of other young men when it came to grasping the Word of God and spiritual principles, a process that other young men did not go through. It’s interesting to note that Luke’s account of Jesus’ life includes a reference to something that happened when Jesus was 12 years old. A lot may be learned from this intriguing narrative, which can only be found in the Gospel of Luke, and we should pay attention to it.

The fact that Joseph and His mother were among the group was unknown to them;44 yet, believing that He was present, they traveled a day’s trip in search of Him among their relatives and acquaintances.

They were taken aback when they saw that He had not joined the caravan. They spent the next day heading back to Jerusalem, where they hoped to find Him in good condition.

The fact that Joseph and Mary imagined He was going with another family or relatives meant that they didn’t question about His location until later in the day. Since there was no way they could have anticipated anything other than consistent behavior from their Son and a routine return to Nazareth following the Passover holiday, their actions were quite logical. They were taken aback when they saw that He had not joined the caravan. They spent the next day heading back to Jerusalem, where they hoped to find Him in good condition.

The boy Jesus at the temple

There is evidence to suggest that they discovered Him in the temple grounds on the third day following the feast. He was not playing with other guys, he was disoriented, and he was even afraid of being on his own. Instead, he was engaged in serious debates with some of the city’s most renowned instructors of the law, “both listening to them and asking them questions,” according to the New York Times. (46 As a result, after three days, they discovered Him at the temple, sitting in the midst of the instructors, both listening to them and asking them questions in return.

Joseph and Mary were relieved to see that Jesus had been found in good health.
Mary was the one who asked the first question about what it all meant.
Whether it was because Jesus was created in her womb, or because she was the one who was more emotionally upset as a result of the days of searching, but Mary was seeking an explanation from her Son at this point.
“Son, why have You done this to us?” she enquired in verse 48.

A lot of parents would automatically allow their frustration or anger to dictate their actions, and they might even lash out at their child for causing them so much distress, but she seemed to know that her Son had never been irresponsible or rebellious, and so she sought an honest understanding of what He was up to.

“I must be about My Father’s business”

As a response to His mother’s question, Jesus stated: “Why were you looking for Me? “Did you not realize that I needed to attend to My Father’s business?” (See verse 49.) When Jesus announced that He would be staying in Jerusalem, there was no previous notice given. Perhaps He hoped that Joseph and Mary would come to the conclusion that He had vital job to do and that they would not be alarmed when He was gone for an extended period of time.

Spiritual understanding

As a child, Jesus’ parents must have had some meaningful discussions with one other. His mother would have repeated the narrative of His birth, as well as what Gabriel spoke to her nine months before His birth, to the other members of the family. Jesus also possessed an unlimited amount of His Father’s Spirit (34). Perhaps Jesus believed that His parents would take all of this into consideration on this particular occasion and that this would alleviate any concerns they might have had regarding His whereabouts.
However, they were unable to comprehend the remark that He made to them.
Now that His parents had returned to claim Him, Jesus understood that he would soon begin his life’s work and take on His Father’s responsibilities.
So He traveled with them to Nazareth, where he was subjected to their authority, but His mother kept all of this information hidden in her heart.

By then, he would be prepared to confront the most difficult trial a man might ever face in his life.

Why did Luke record the story of Jesus as a boy in the temple?

This remarkable tale of Jesus’ boyhood was recorded by Luke for a reason. God led Luke to write it. Based on this condition, we may conclude that this unique family went through life experiences similar to those experienced by any other regular family, with true sentiments, emotions, worries, and at times perplexity experienced by family members, including Jesus’ brothers and sisters (see3). So His brothers admonished Him, saying, “Depart from here and travel to Judea so that your followers might witness the deeds that You are doing.”4 As long as he himself wishes to be recognized publicly, no one can be said to be acting in secret.

Joseph and Mary had a lot to think about when it came to their Son and His unique abilities, while Jesus developed in his awareness of His duty as a son and emerged with a clearer understanding of God’s plan for His life.
