6 Mysterious Numbers in the Bible and What They Mean

But what are we supposed to make of all of those figures? What do we do with them? Do we take them at face value or do we give them mystical significance? Pythagoras, a Greek philosopher who flourished in the sixth century B.C.E., was the first to explain that numbers themselves had significance beyond counting and calculating.

Author John Davis writes that both Jewish and later Christian readers of the Bible were influenced by Pythagoras and attempted to derive mystical meanings from numbers using a variety of inventive methods.
