Scenes and sets:

Designed to resemble like a butterfly, the Crucifixion set had a 20-foot robe that provided an atent-like effect, which was lifted above the audience. To replace the cross, there was a triangular cutout area in the backdrop that was backlit to produce an eye-catching visual impact.
Period and Costumes:
The time of Christ. Male and female robes of various styles and materials, ranging from peasant garb to nicer plain cloaks for Jesus, his Apostles, and their wives, to the elaborate robes of the high priests, Pilate, Herod, and their wives. There are loin-cloths, soldier’s helmets, surrealistic hats, head pieces, spears, and other accessories available for purchase.

‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ at 50: What Was the Buzz?
Yvonne Elliman, an 18-year-old Hawaiian singer and guitarist from Hawaii, had just completed singing at a London nightclub when a frenzied young man rushed the stage and said, “You’re my Mary Magdalene!” (Credit: Friedman-Abeles, The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts) I thought he was talking about the mother of God,” Elliman, now 69, said in a recent phone conversation, explaining that she was unfamiliar with the biblical story.

The film was directed by Tom O’Horgan (Hair), who was chosen when Lloyd Webber failed to receive a telegram from filmmaker Hal Prince, who had indicated interest. “Hal Prince would have been the one guy I would have wanted to have seen do it,” Lloyd Webber stated in the interview. “Do you think things would have turned out differently? Would it have been beneficial? “I really don’t know.” With Lloyd Webber, 23, and Rice, 26, in attendance, the musical, which tells the story of Jesus’ final seven days through the eyes of one of his disciples named Judas Iscariot, premiered at the Mark Hellinger Theater on 51st Street on Friday night.
Let’s just say that Lloyd Webber and O’Horgan’s $700,000 staging of “The Phantom of the Opera” was a “brash and filthy interpretation,” and that opening night was “perhaps the worst night of my life,” according to Lloyd Webber, who would later declare the production “the definitive one.” The reviews were a mixed bag.
His description reads, “It appears to be a record that has been duplicated onstage with visual filler by Tom O’Horgan.” The show was lambasted by writer Clive Barnes of the New York Times, who wrote that it “resembled one’s first glimpse of the Empire State Building.” Nothing short of fascinating, but yet expected and of only marginal aesthetic worth,” says the author.
Cries of “Blasphemy!”
Hundreds of Christian and Jewish protesters turned out for the show’s opening night, carrying leaflets and denouncing what New York Times writer Guy Flatley called “the strutting, mincing, twitching, grinding,” “souped-up ‘Superstar,'” which he described as “theatrical sacrilege.” “It would be ‘Blasphemy! Blasphemy!’ as you walked into the theater,” recalled Ben Vereen, who played Judas and is now 75 years old. The composer went on to say, “I’m not certain that Robert Stigwood, our producer, couldn’t have arranged one or two of them himself.” In retrospect, I believe it might have had a far more difficult journey today than it did then.” A number of people have accused Rice and Lloyd Webber of rejecting the divine nature of Christ and of constructing a hero out of Judas, who is unambiguously shown as a villain in the New Testament.

” And that was the end of his narrative.” In addition, the sexual connotations between Jesus and Mary Magdalene, the prostitute who finds herself falling in love with him, surprised conservative Christians.
“Superstar,” on the other hand, was never a narrative about a relationship, says Rice.

A Musical Radio Play

According to him, “a lot of it has to do with how you plant themes and how you deal with them.” “The overture was created with the goal of introducing every item that I could think of that would fit into the musical palette that would be used throughout the duration of the album.” And then those themes repeat one by one, like when the whole overture is mirrored in Jesus’ trial before Pontius Pilate, or when a song with a twist, such as “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” reappears with a new twist.
It is a love song about Jesus to Mary Magdalene; when it returns as a motif in a lament performed by Judas, the words change: “He’s not a king, he’s just the same/As everyone I know/He worries me so.” According to Lloyd Webber, “Judas understood Jesus, and he definitely was plainly captivated with him and adored him.” Furthermore, you had this lady who was, if you believe the Bible, clearly head over heels in love with him at the same time as well.
And, of course, there’s the strange track from the musical itself.
According to Lloyd Webber, “it’s taking a traditional showbiz number and turning it into something really, really, really horrible.” This is a number that has gone horribly wrong when Herod turns around and exclaims, “Get out of my life!” “Get out of my life!” Rice made the following statement: “I believe it’s a wonderful move on Andrew’s side from a musical standpoint.
‘Oh, well, you know, maybe it’s going to have a happy ending.’ was the kind of thing we wanted people to think when they saw the trailer.
The Show’s Legacy
After generating $1.2 million in advance sales, the Broadway production sold out nearly every performance during its first six weeks on the road. The excitement, on the other hand, was short-lived. It played for a total of 711 performances and failed to win a Tony Award despite being nominated for five awards, including one for best score. However, the musical’s legacy has endured, spawning three Broadway revivals (in 1977, 2000, and 2012), a 2012 Lloyd Webber-produced televised competition series to cast the titular role for a British arena tour, a 2018 televised NBC production that starred John Legend as Jesus and resulted in Emmy awards for Rice and Lloyd Webber — and now the 50th anniversary American tour, which was halted by the pandemic but resumed performances in Seattle late last “It’s been 51 years since the record was released.

10 Things You Might Not Know About Jesus Christ Superstar
In the 1970s, an opera about Jesus of Nazareth played a pivotal role in bridging the gap between rock ‘n’ roll and musical theater audiences. Despite the fact that the radical songs from Jesus Christ Superstar split religious organizations, they dominated the Billboard charts. The production also heralded the beginning of Broadway’s “British invasion” in the 1970s and 1980s, laying the groundwork for such mega-hits as Cats and Les Miserables to take the stage. In 2018, NBC broadcasted a live rendition of the play, which included John Legend as Jesus and Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdalene.
1. IT BEGAN AS A CONCEPT ALBUM BECAUSE NO PRODUCER WANTED TO PUT IT ON STAGE.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber and initially performed in 1965 when they were 20 and 17 years old, had their first taste of joint triumph with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in 1968. Following that, the team turned their attention to another Biblical figure: Jesus of Nazareth. The two of them had a concept for a bold new rock musical that would recount the tale of Christ’s betrayal and execution from the perspective of Judas Iscariot.
It’s possible that the seeming setback was a blessing in disguise.
In Rice’s words, “doing it on record” made it shorter, eliminated the book, made it more modern, made it more rock, gave it more energy, and helped it to be more identifiable with a younger audience.
We didn’t realize it at the time because, in large part because of Andrew’s encouragement, we were attempting to compose for the stage rather than for the album.
2. A BOB DYLAN LYRIC INSPIRED THE MUSICAL’S DEPICTION OF JUDAS.
In the hymn “With God on Our Side,” the line “Did Judas Iscariot have God on his side?” was sung by Judas Iscariot himself. Tim’s beginning point for the text, according to Lloyd Webber, who subsequently explained the line. It was named Carlo’s Place, and the proprietor was someone I knew a little bit. I walked into the restaurant and asked for a sheet of paper, which they gladly provided.” He recalled what had happened.
4. THE MELODY OF “I DON’T KNOW HOW TO LOVE HIM” WAS TAKEN FROM AN UNRELATED SONG CALLED “KANSAS MORNING.”
Rice and Lloyd Webber collaborated on the song “Kansas Morning,” which was created as a tribute to the Sunflower State and released in 1967. In the lyrics of one song, “I adore the Kansas morning,” the singer said. “I’m looking out my window at Kansas mist.” Later, while working on the score for Superstar, the musicians reworked an old song and added new words, giving birth to Mary’s Act I solo. Webber has agreed that the tune does resemble a subject from Felix Mendelssohn’sViolin Concerto in E Minor, which he composed for his daughter (1845).
“That was something I simply took in.”
5. YVONNE ELLIMAN WAS CAST AS THE ORIGINAL MARY MAGDALENE AFTER LLOYD WEBBER HEARD HER SINGING AT A NIGHTCLUB.
As part of his search for vocalists for the concept album, Lloyd Webber paid a visit to the famous Pheasantry Club in Chelsea to see whether a jazz singer playing there might be a good match for Pontius Pilate. He was unsuccessful. As Lloyd Webber said to The Daily Mail in 2012, “I concluded he was completely inappropriate for the job,” but “his warm-up performance, a stunning 17-year-old Hawaiian girl named Yvonne Elliman, playing herself on the guitar, was fantastic.” I looked around and saw everything I had wished for Mary Magdalene there in front of me.” In a telephone conversation with Rice, who “agreed that we had discovered our Mary,” he said.
Elliman would go on to become the only member of the album’s cast to reprise her part on Broadway, in the show’s 1971 arena tour, and in the film adaptation of Jesus Christ Superstar, released in 1973.
6. LLOYD WEBBER HATED THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY PRODUCTION.
The original Superstaralbum, which consisted of two discs, was released in September 1970, and by February 1971, it had risen to the top of the Billboard charts. Soon after, American fans began organizing illegal live performances in churches and theaters around the country, prompting producer Robert Stigwood to suggest that an officialJesus Christ Superstarconcert tour be staged in conjunction with the film. The inaugural performance was held on July 12, 1971, at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Many critics, including Clive Barnes of The New York Times, were critical of the production, which was directed by Tom O’Horgan.
It all had a certain resemblance to the first time one saw the Empire State Building.
Lloyd Webber, on the other hand, disliked it to the extreme.

His Highness King Herod- The King of Galilee, Herod, is irritated by the fact that Jesus is being treated as though he were royalty. When it comes to this specific character, there is room for theatrical license. For example, in the UK Arena Tour, Herod was designed to be a TV talk show presenter in the vein of Jeremy Kyle, who played the role of King Herod. (This is more than likely a tribute to Chris Moyles’s previous radio DJ work.) But in stark contrast to this, the Open Air TheatreSuperstarproduction depicted the role as over-the-top and futuristic, almost as though Herod were appearing in a future music video. For example, the performers in each show were outfitted in a gold cloak and used extensive sparkly makeup to represent their high social standing and to distinguish themselves from the rest of the group.
