Guard your heart

Loving God with all your heart

The act of loving God is a significant component of our growing sanctification. Our hearts, souls, minds, and bodies are commanded to be completely devoted to Him in all of their fullness. It is because we love Him that we submit to Him. The greater our love for Him, the greater our desire to obey Him. As much as we try, it is impossible to love Him as completely as we are instructed to do – we are constantly guilty of this sin. It is a wonder that God’s grace has the ability to cover such a consistent pattern of sin.

“And you shall love the Lord your God with all of your heart and with all of your soul and with all of your mind and with all of your strength,” the Bible states.

Deuteronomy 6:5 states that we should love the Lord our God with all of our hearts and souls and all of our strength.

The brokenhearted

God knows your heart

We should be terrified and frightened before such a powerful and holy God, who is well aware of how completely terrible we are and how far separated we are from Him.

What is the heart?

This article is also not concerned with meanings that are romantic, philosophical, or literary in nature. Instead, we’ll look at what the Bible has to say about the heart as a starting point. The heart is mentioned more than 1,000 times in the Bible. To put it simply, the heart is that spiritual part of ourselves where our emotions and desires are housed, as stated in the verse.

What does it mean that God looks at the heart of man?

The fall of the heart

A inherent tendency of the human heart is to gravitate toward sin. “The heart is deceitful beyond all things” as a result of the fall (Jeremiah 17:9). Whether a person will obey God or reject God is determined by the state of his or her heart (see Moses’ interaction with Pharaoh in Exodus 4-14 and Joshua’s instruction to the Israelites in Joshua 24:23). The heart might be as hard as stone, or it can be soft and delicate in response to God’s guidance, warnings, and love for us (see Ezekiel 36:26).

When a person comes to believe that Jesus is Lord and that God raised Him from the dead, he or she has experienced the greatest event of their lives, which occurs in the heart (Romans 10:8-9).

Body and soul

The Bible describes man as having a physical body as well as a spiritual soul. The human body is the biological, physical, and material construction that makes up the human being. The soul is made up of the intellect, the heart, the spirit, and the will (these terms are often used interchangeably). The soul is the immaterial component of the human construction that is most representative of our created purpose as bearers of God’s image, despite the fact that it is not physically present.

As a result, we may confidently assert, in accordance with 1 Samuel 16:7, that God does not evaluate us based on our appearance, power, or talents. As opposed to that, he searches, knows, and changes the heart.

Trust in the Lord

We believe that the heart is the wellspring of our emotions such as love, compassion, loyalty, and sadness.

Using God’s Word as our guide, we’ll look at what the heart is and why it’s so important in our relationship with the Lord in this article.

What does the Bible say our heart is?

The Bible, rather than defining our hearts in a single passage, does it over a number of verses. It is possible to overlook it. God created us with three distinct parts: the spirit, the soul, and the body, as mentioned in a previous piece. So, where does our heart fit into all of this? The Word of God reveals to us that our heart is not a distinct, fourth component of our whole existence. As opposed to this, our heart is composed of the three components of our soul—our thinking, our emotion, and our will—as well as the most crucial component of our spirit—our conscience.

1. Matthew 9:4

The importance of our heart

The lyrics above demonstrate that our hearts are capable of far more than we would have imagined. In addition to perceiving the whole gamut of human emotions, our hearts are capable of reasoning, making decisions, and distinguishing good from evil. Take a look at the following two reasons why our heart’s function is so critical.

We love with our heart

According to Jesus’ words in Mark 12:30, “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart.” It’s impossible to feel love or to receive love if we don’t have a beating heart. God created us with a heart so that we might have a loving connection with Him and with one another. As a result, in a very real sense, our hearts are at the heart of our connection with the Almighty.

Our heart is the gateway of our being

In addition to serving as the focal point of our connection with God, our heart serves as the gateway or entryway via which our entire self enters and exits. Witness Lee, the author of The Economy of God, illustrates the significance of this function. “Our relationship with the Lord is always initiated and sustained by the heart,” Lee writes on page 75. Of course, contacting the Lord is a spiritual affair, but it is one that must be begun and sustained by the heart, because our heart is the entrance to our entire existence.” Our heart being the entryway to our entire existence means that our heart has complete control over what we allow in and what we allow out.

Lee continues on page 75 with the following statement: “In other words, the heart becomes both the entrance and the departure of our existence.
“Everything that comes out of us must pass through the heart.” This becomes evident to us as we reflect on our own personal experience of salvation.
We had a strong feeling of the depth and tenderness of His affection for us.
It was at that point that we welcomed Him into our spirits and were reborn with His heavenly existence.

Our heart and our relationship with the Lord

God made us in such a beautiful and unique manner! We have a spirit that allows us to communicate with, receive, and contain Him as life, as well as a heart that loves Him. He desires to be our life, and He desires for us to adore Him with all of our hearts. It is our heart that initiates our relationship with the Lord, as we can see in the first text above. We also keep it up with the help of our hearts. It is for this reason that the health of our hearts is so crucial. When an issue emerges in a relationship, we must address it as soon as possible.

Perhaps we have a particular attitude toward the other person, or perhaps we have specific unfavorable views about them.

Leaving such issues unanswered will only result in the relationship being more strained.

Problems like this are always on our side, and they concern our hearts.

For example, we can be experiencing difficulty in our hearts because our views regarding a certain topic do not coincide with the thoughts of the Lord.

Perhaps we are adamant about going our own way because our stubbornness has hardened our will.

How can we have a beautiful and harmonious relationship with the Lord if our hearts are in such a condition of discontent?

In the event that a disagreement occurs between us and the Lord, we may simply turn our hearts toward Him and pray, “Lord Jesus, I open my heart to You.

“I adore You, Lord,” I say.
