What does the Bible say about traditionalism?

QuestionAnswer Traditionalism is the practice of sticking to established customs and traditions as being authoritative. Traditionalism may also be described as the concept that moral and religious truth is derived from supernatural revelation that has been passed down via tradition rather than being discovered by human reasoning or experimentation. Traditionalism is concerned with maintaining these traditions and is hostile to change. On the one hand, religious and moral truth may be traced back to divine revelation; the Bible, for example, is replete with moral and religious truth.

Not the human tradition that has arisen around divine revelation, but divine revelation itself, is the ultimate source of authority.

Protestantism adheres to the doctrine of sola scriptura, which means that Protestants recognize only the authority of Scripture in questions of faith and practice.

Consider what the Bible truly says, including Jesus’ reprimand of the traditionalists of His day (see Luke 11:37–52), and it becomes evident that we must accept the Bible as the final authority in our lives.

Scripture, according to Second Timothy 3:16–17, is God-breathed.
The value of Scripture was confirmed by Jesus himself.
“According to the patriarchs of old,” or “According to tradition,” were not among Jesus’ responses.
Religious leaders were frequently called out by Jesus for following traditionalism rather than following the genuine mandates of God.
Jesus responded by asking them why they were breaking God’s law for the sake of their traditions.
On the day of Jesus’ resurrection, He came face to face with two disciples who were on their way to Emmaus.

In response, he exclaimed, ‘How dumb you are, and how sluggish you are to believe anything the prophets have stated!’ What if the Messiah had to go through all of this before he could be exalted into glory?’ ‘And he began with Moses and all the Prophets, and he clarified to them everything that had been declared in all the Scriptures about himself,’ says Luke 24:25–27.

The Jews of Berea are complimented in Acts 17:11 for putting Paul and Silas’ teachings to the test by comparing them to Scripture.
To fit their own wishes, they will instead collect a large number of teachers around them who will speak only what their aching ears want to hear.
But you, maintain your composure in all circumstances, endure tribulation, carry out the task of an evangelist, and fulfill all the responsibilities of your ministry” (2 Timothy 4:2–5).
God’s Word is referred to as a sword in both Hebrews 4:12 and Ephesians 6:17.
Humans are flawed, and as a result, human tradition is also faulty.
Traditions should not be preserved just for the sake of traditionalism.
Having said that, there may be a great deal of value in tradition.

To help them recall God’s faithfulness and delight in His benefits, the Jews were instructed to observe the Feasts of the Lord on certain days throughout the year.

The Jewish feasts of Purim and Hanukkah provide as examples.

In fact, some academics think that Jesus observed the festival of Purim (see John 5:1).

It is possible to learn a great deal from our traditions on a variety of levels, and there is nothing fundamentally wrong with following tradition.

The separation between heavenly precepts and human traditions must, nevertheless, always be maintained.

Even the most ancient traditions, no matter how ancient they may be, are only valuable if they are rooted in God’s truth and guide us in His direction.

1Jesus and the Torah
