The act of loving God is a significant component of our growing sanctification. Our hearts, souls, minds, and bodies are called to be completely devoted to Him in all of their fulness. It is because we love Him that we submit to Him in obedience. The greater our love for Him, the greater our desire to follow Him. To love Him as totally as we are instructed is difficult since we are always guilty of this sin. It is a wonder that God’s grace has the ability to cover such a great deal of sinfulness.

” The twenty-first verse of Matthew 22:37 Afterwards, he instructed him to love the Lord his God with all of his heart, soul, and mind.” Deuteronomy 6:5 states that we should love the Lord our God with all of our hearts and souls and all of our strength.” 12:2 in the book of Romans 22) In Ephesians 4:22-24, Paul says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be converted with the renewal of your mind, so you may discern what is God’s will, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

God knows your heart

God knows what is in our hearts. He is aware of all of our hidden misdeeds, our darkest secrets, and our most terrifying fears. God is aware of our individuality, our preferences, and our routines. He is aware of our innermost thoughts and the prayers we are too terrified to say out loud. This should fill us with dread while also inspiring us with hope at the same time. We should be terrified and frightened before such a powerful and holy God, who is well aware of how completely terrible we are and how far separated we are from Him.

What does it mean that God looks at the heart of man?

The ‘heart’ of a person, according to the Bible, is a barometer of their spiritual condition, as well as the focal point of a person’s fundamental being. What Scripture says about the heart of man

The fall of the heart

A inherent tendency of the human heart is to gravitate toward sin. “The heart is deceitful beyond all things” as a result of the fall (Jeremiah 17:9). Whether a person will obey God or reject God is determined by the state of his or her heart (see Moses’ interaction with Pharaoh in Exodus 4-14 and Joshua’s instruction to the Israelites in Joshua 24:23). The heart might be as hard as stone, or it can be soft and delicate in response to God’s guidance, warnings, and love for us (see Ezekiel 36:26).

When a person comes to believe that Jesus is Lord and that God raised Him from the dead, he or she has experienced the greatest event of their lives, which occurs in the heart (Romans 10:8-9).

Body and soul

The Bible describes man as having a physical body as well as a spiritual soul. The human body is the biological, physical, and material construction that makes up the human being. The soul is made up of the intellect, the heart, the spirit, and the will (these terms are often used interchangeably). This article is also not concerned with meanings that are romantic, philosophical, or literary in nature. Instead, we’ll look at what the Bible has to say about the heart as a starting point. It is the purpose of this article to provide a response to the question “what is the heart” from a biblical perspective. According to the Bible, the heart is a vital component of a person’s spiritual composition. It is the starting point for human emotions and wants, and it is this that propels the will of man to take decisive action. The physical heart is an organ that is responsible for the pumping of blood. Poets have a lot to say about the human heart, as well. The Bible, on the other hand, describes the heart of man as largely a spiritual organ that directs the actions of a human being.

God must “remove the heart of stone” from people’s hearts and replace it with “a heart of flesh” in order for them to want what He desires (Ezekiel 36:26).

3. The Seat of Sin, the Heart

Owen refers to the remnants of indwelling sin in believers as a “law” in chapter one, drawing on the apostle Paul and Romans 7:21 to support his claim. In chapter two, he delves into the meaning of sinas a commandment in great detail. To the contrary of an external rule, indwelling sin is a law that emanates from inside, and as such, it possesses greater ability to inspire, persuade and propel us into its service than a law imposed from the outside. In the soul, it constantly abides; it is always ready to apply itself with rewards and punishments; and it always influences the mind with darkness, the emotions with sensuality, and the will with obstinacy.

“When I want to do good, sin is right there with me.” It is constantly present.

The following are the main points that Jesus makes in his assessment of the wickedness of the human heart: 1.

Matthew15:18 In contrast, the things that come out of a person’s tongue originate from their hearts, and these things contaminate that individual. 15:19Because bad thoughts arise in the heart, such as murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, and defamation. The things that pollute a person are those listed above; it is not eating with dirty hands that defiles a person.

There are numerous external temptations that fall upon us as human beings, but the challenge we are facing is one that stems mostly from inside. Rather than coming from without, our fallen, darkened hearts spew forth evil and poison the entirety of our existence, wreaking havoc on the lives of those with whom we are most closely associated. The passage of Genesis 6:5 is uncompromising in its description of the depths to which the human heart might plunge when separated from God:

The Nature of the Human Heart according to Scripture

Owen makes several references to the “heart,” and in this section, he takes the time to explain what he means by the phrase. In general, the term “heart” in Scripture refers to the whole of a person’s wants, intentions, and goals; it alludes to the person as a morally responsible creature who considers his or her full self. Owen has the following to say: Theheart is used in numerous ways in Scripture; it is sometimes used to refer to the mind and understanding, sometimes to the will, sometimes to the affections, sometimes to the conscience, and sometimes to refer to the entire soul.

It is possible to say two things in respect to the “heart” as the driving force behind men’s good or bad activities. First, the heart is the principle of their good or bad deeds. First and foremost, there is a suitability or pleasingness to the heart in the real actions done. Both God and humanity are believed to put their full heart into their actions. Second, there is a lack of consistency or resolve in the things that are done. Men’s emotions are continually reaching for the riches that they believe they require or want to utilize in some way. As a result, the workings of the heart are both appropriate and consistent.

Certain Properties of the Fallen Human Heart

Because sin is ingrained in the very core of man’s being and is in no way incidental to his experience, it has the potential to exercise a significant amount of influence on his destiny. While there are several characteristics that give sin its ability to rule the heart, Owen would want to focus on only two that are taken from Jeremiah 17:9: 17.9The human mind deceives us more than any other item in the universe. It is inexorably deteriorating. Who is able to comprehend it? 17:10I, the Lord, delve into the hearts and minds of people.

And I deal with each individual in accordance with his or her behavior.

The Heart Is Unsearchable

Human beings are almost unable to look for answers in their hearts. Without a doubt, no one can totally comprehend the heart of another person, and no one can fully comprehend the heart of one’s own self. God is the only one who has complete access to the human heart; only he has the ability to probe the depths of our souls and offer an appropriate judgement on what he discovers there. In addition, keep in mind that the law of sin is lodged inside that unsearchableheart. The fact that the heart itself is incomprehensible accounts for a significant portion of the power of indwelling sin, then.

We may believe that a particular sin has been overcome when, in truth, it has simply momentarily gone out of sight—where we are unable to track it down and destroy it—only to reemerge when it is more convenient for us to believe so.

For we are unable to follow it into the inner recesses of the heart, even with the greatest of our intelligence, which is only to see its earliest manifestations, to catch its first underground heavings and workings, and to place ourselves in opposition to them.23

The Heart Is Deceitful

The heart is a cruel and treacherous instrument. Look no farther than the affairs of men in the world, including their acts toward others and the counsel they provide to others, to see what I am talking about. However, Jeremiah’s allusion to the heart as being deceptive is not in relation to the deceitfulness of sin in society, which is quite common nowadays. As an alternative, the prophet warns of the deceitfulness that exists in a man’s heart toward himself. But how does this deceitfulness express itself in the first instance?

Sin has gained such a grip on the faculties of the heart that it has corrupted all of them, leading them to function in ways that are contrary to the order and harmony that God has established in the universe.

However, sin has entered the picture, and a lovely creation has been severely harmed.

Sometimes the passions gain control, which means that they run away and commit transgression, and it is only later that the mind realizes what has happened.

There are other instances when the intellect is incapable of uncovering the truth, despite the fact that the emotions are screaming for it, the will is pleading for it, and the conscience is begging for it to be revealed.

When it came to God and his will, the intellect and the reason were completely subordinated to God and his will. Because of the disturbance caused by sin, the remainder of the faculties begin to move crosswise and in opposition to one another. The will does not select the good that the intellect discovers, and the affections do not take pleasure in the good that the will chooses; rather, they all jar and interfere, cross and rebel against one another. This is what we have gotten as a result of our separation from God.24

It is as a result of these observations that Owen concludes that the “structure of the heart is poised to contradict itself every second.” 25 Things might appear to be running smoothly, so to speak, with the intellect, affections, and will all in harmony and functioning correctly, but in the blink of an eye, the emotions can gain control and the entire world can tumble into confusion and contradiction. This is not the way God intended for us to be made, but it is the terrible truth of the consequences of sin on our lives. In addition to paradoxes, there is another manner in which dishonesty may act in our souls. Deceit acts in the heart by also making good on promises that are made at the outset of the situation. Sometimes our passions or feelings are touched upon, and it appears like everything is right with the world. However, within a short period of time, our entire disposition or countenance is thrown off balance, showing that our minds have not been affected or altered by God. Whenever we let go of our emotions, we let go of all the “fair promises” we made to ourselves about reform and purity as well. According to Owen, this is still another huge deception of the heart, which is the source of sin. Consider that sin disrupts the very “frame” or order of operations of the faculties of the soul, causing them to be violently thrown into confusion, and that the heart makes promises that it cannot keep, and we are not surprised to hear Jeremiah describe the heart as “desperately wicked” (Owen’s words). We are also not shocked that God warns us multiple times in the Scriptures to keep an eye on our hearts as well.

Final Considerations in Light of the Condition of Our Hearts

Consequently, Owen comes to the conclusion that the “frame of the heart is poised to contradict itself at any time.” 25 Even when everything appears to be going well, with the intellect, affections, and will all in harmony and functioning properly, the emotions may grab control and cause chaos and contradictions to erupt in the blink of an eye. Even though this is not the way in which God intended for us to be made, it is a terrible truth of the consequences of our sin. In addition to paradoxes, dishonesty may act in our souls through a second channel.

We are occasionally reminded of our attachments or feelings, and it appears that all is good with the world.

Every one of the “fair promises” we made about reform and holiness are gone as soon as the passion is gone, and we are left with nothing.

Consider that sin disrupts the very “frame” or order of operations of the faculties of the soul, causing them to be violently thrown into confusion, and that the heart makes promises that it cannot keep, and we are not surprised to hear Jeremiah describe the heart as “desperately wicked” (Owen’s phrase).

Mortification Never Ends in This Life

Despite the gift of God and his indwelling Spirit (Rom 8:13), the redeemed soul must continue on its journey toward perfection. It has been referred to as such. We have thereby taken on a role of co-operation with God, in which we are putting to death the sins of the flesh (Phil 2:12-13). And we will continue to do so for as long as we are physically here in this body. Mortification will be unnecessary only at the time of glorification, which will occur in the future life. Because we now grasp that sin’s very home, i.e., our hearts, is deceptive, we recognize how much more we understand this now.

As Owen puts it, Never assume that our task of struggling against sin, in crucifying, mortifying, and subduing it, has come to an end.

Although we may believe that we have completely won the battle on the field, there is always some reserve that we did not see or were not aware of that we have not yet discovered.

Consider the fact that there is no other way to get our mission done but to keep doing it, and that everyone who dies fighting in this conflict will almost certainly be considered a victor.26

We Must Be Watchful because of Our Heart’s Deceitfulness

Sin takes up residence in that which is inconstant, shifting, and habitually dishonest, i.e., in our souls, where it is most difficult to detect. This means that we must maintain a continual vigilance for its actions; we must be in a condition of constant alertness (not fearfulness or hyper-activity). One thing would be if we were facing an adversary who came out into the open and we could rest easy knowing that he was either far away at times or incapable of striking at others; however, this would not be the case.

Sin that exists in the heart is deceptive, deals treacherously, and frequently enters by the back door.

While the morning may have a pleasant picture of tranquillity and quiet, violent feelings may develop, clouding the soul with sin and darkness.

We Must Commit the Whole Matter to God

Realistic talks about sin and its influence in our lives may easily lead to sentiments of despair and fear if it weren’t for the merciful provision and presence of our Lord. But this does not have to be the case, because God intends that we entrust the entire situation to him and that we do so with care and attention in doing so. “Cast all of your worries on him because he genuinely cares about you” (1 Pet 5:7). He has the ability to explore our hearts to the depths of their depths, knowing exactly what lurks under the surface, waiting to destroy us.

He is well aware of the ways in which our fallen souls operate and is not the least bit taken in by them.

Simply following the path blazed by Israel’s great monarch, David, is all that is required of us: Psalm139:23 Take a look at me and see what I’m thinking!

Summary of Chapter Three

Owen has addressed the link between indwelling sin and the human heart, which serves as both the seat and the subject of sin in this chapter. In Scripture, the heart refers to the entire person who is thought to be a moral entity who has the ability to choose between evil and good.
