Scripture References

  • The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 to pray without stopping. Because a servant is not familiar with his master’s business, I no longer refer to you as servants. John 15:15 – As a result, I have referred to you as friends, since I have shared with you all that I have learned from my Father
  • 1 Jesus said in John 5:14 that we may approach God with confidence, because we know that if we ask anything according to his will, he will hear us.

The Story

Joseph Scriven was born in the Irish capital of Dublin in 1819. He grew up in Dublin and went on to study at Trinity College, which is located there. When he was a young guy, he was the victim of tragedy. On the night before their wedding in 1845, he had become engaged to a lovely young woman, but she drowned in an accident the night before their wedding. Scriven left his home in England and traveled to Ontario, Canada, where he found solace. While there, he finally fell in love with and became engaged to another woman, who, like him, became ill with pneumonia and died shortly after, only a few weeks before they were scheduled to be married.

  1. He set himself the objective of living his life in accordance with the teachings of the Sermon on the Mount.
  2. According to the legend, a guy from his village happened to see him in his work attire and approached him about hiring him to chop some wood for him.
  3. “Why not?” the gentleman inquired.
  4. He solely saws wood for the sake of destitute widows and the ill.” Scriven received word in 1855 that his mother was in critical condition.
  5. Scriven had planned for his mother to be the only one to hear him read the poem.
  6. Fortunately, it was discovered by famous gospel singer, composer, and hymnal editor Ira D.
  7. 1, which soon gained widespread popularity.
  8. It wasn’t until 30 years later that Scriven was finally acknowledged as the genuine author of the article in question.
  9. Someone approached Scriven in the years leading up to his death and inquired as to whether or not he was the author.

What I sincerely believe is that whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will grant you. I say this with all my heart. You haven’t asked any questions in my name up to this point. You may ask, and you will get, so that your delight will be complete. (See also John 16:23–24.) Suppose your mother were terribly sick, maybe approaching death, and you were unable to be at her side. What would you write to her to console her? While living in Bewdley, Ontario, Joseph Scriven received word that his mother was in critical condition back home in Ireland.

  • When compared to the ease with which we can travel now, three thousand miles in 1855 might as well have been three hundred thousand.
  • What an honor it is to bring everything before God in prayer!
  • In the midst of his grief at how sick his mother was, how far away he felt from her, how little he could do, and how soon she may be gone, Joseph was reminded of the fact that he had a friend in heaven.
  • Because of Jesus, Joseph was able to do much more than just write; he was able to pray.
  • Joseph Scriven had lost his fiancée twelve years before the death of his mother, and he was devastated by the loss.
  • He fell in love for the second time fifteen years later, some years after penning the words of “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” He was engaged to be married at the time.
  • The classic phrases sound almost wholly different now that we know what he went through and what suffering he carried with him: Oh, what serenity we frequently forfeit; Oh, what senseless pain we undergo; All because we do not bring everything to God in prayer!

With each passing day, it appears that our greatest tragedies bring to light the most fundamental facts of life, realities such as Jesus’ relationship with us all.

As he prepared to betray them, he told them, “There is no greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends.” “Greater love has no one than this,” he said.

I no longer refer to you as servants, since a servant has no understanding of what his master is doing; instead, I refer to you as friends, because all I have learned from my Father has been communicated to you.

“I have called you friends,” Joseph Scriven told them.

The Most High regards as friends anybody who has believed what Jesus taught, anyone who has obeyed his teachings, and anyone for whom he suffered and died on the cross for them.

He will love you with commitment, intentionality, and affection, just as he would any other close friend.

And he encourages you to leave them down at the feet of a Friend, rather than a King or a Judge, as he does.

During the Last Supper, Jesus addresses his companions, who have gathered around him.

You haven’t asked any questions in my name up to this point.

They had not prayed in his name up until that point, but from that point forward they would have a friend before the throne and an advocate before God the Father (1 John 2:1).

Likewise, to us.

When that does not happen, we may expect him to be more praised in some other manner than he would otherwise be.

In the name of Jesus, I will accomplish anything you want in my name” (John 14:13–14).

In prayer, if the glory of God is our greatest burden, if it is the thread that runs through all of our petitions, we will never find a companion who is so dependable, and we will never find joy that is so overwhelming.
