The Story

My favorite thing to do is watch the Gaither Homecoming movies, and every now and then, I’m shocked to see some of the luminaries of Southern Gospel music in the audience. Jim Hill, who is in his 80s as of this writing and still has his magnificent tenor voice, is one of the people I look forward to seeing. Jim Hill studied to be a professional singer as a young man, even going so far as to audition for the Metropolitan Opera, but, happily for us and the Kingdom of God, he elected to devote his life to gospel music instead.

  • It was in the early 1950s that he would pen the poem “What a Day That Will Be.” According to family legend, his mother-in-law became dangerously ill.
  • He then stated that thoughts had suddenly poured into his mind, and that when he returned home, he immediately grabbed a piece of cardboard and began writing them down.
  • The Golden Keys Quartet was the first to perform the song, and the Homeland Harmony Quartet was the first to record it after they did.
  • Another young hymn writer named Bill Gaither was discovered by the Golden Keys Quartet in the late 1960s, and the Golden Keys Quartet was instrumental in establishing his tunes later in the decade.

As previously announced, Jim was slated to be inducted into the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame at Dollywood on October 3, 2012, a ceremony that was both well-deserved and long overdue. Jim Hill, who passed away in 2018 at the age of 88, went home to be with the Lord.
