24 Must-Know Characteristics of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit has received a poor reputation. He is referred to asit on several occasions. He’s been mistook for the force from Star Wars, which is hilarious. He’s been mistaken for a ghost in a paranormal activity film. In many cases, he is just disregarded or forgotten, and this is understandable. As an unseen spirit, it might be difficult to relate to him and his role in our lives because he is not apparent to us. Even if you recognize him by name and are aware that his name is uttered during a baptism, chances are you have no clue who he is, what he is up to in your life, or whether or not you should even be concerned.

I’d want to use this opportunity to assist clarify the air on the Holy Spirit and his activities in your life.

  • What is the Holy Spirit’s identity
  • The heavenly properties of the Holy Spirit
  • The human traits of the Holy Spirit
  • And There are nine ways in which the Holy Spirit is at work in your life

Let’s get this party started!

Who is the Holy Spirit?

Despite the fact that the identity of the holy spirit is shrouded in mystery, he is not cold, impersonal, or odd in any way. All you have to do now is get to know him. Let’s go ahead and do it. Then, what exactly is the holy spirit?

13 divine characteristics of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity, and he is the most important. This signifies that the holy spirit is God, co-equal with God the Father and God the Son, and has the same essence as God the Father and God the Son. Regarding their personal connection with one another, God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are unique from one another. However, they are co-equally God, which means that they are all manifestations of God’s being. To put it another way, they do not exist in a vacuum separate from one another.

A number of passages in the Bible relate to the Holy Spirit’s divine attributes, including the following:

  1. He is referred to as God (Acts 5:3–4)
  2. He is referred to as the Spirit of God (Gen. 1:2
  3. Judg. 3:10)
  4. He is treated as God (Acts 28:25–27
  5. 2 Cor. 6:16
  6. Heb. 3:7–9)
  7. He is treated as equal to God the Father and God the Son (Matt. 3:16
  8. 28:19
  9. Eph. 2:18
  10. 4:4–6
  11. 1 Pet. 1:2)
  12. He is

There is no mistaking it: the holy spirit is far more than an impersonal force; he is God himself. God, according to the Bible, is one being who exists forever in three separate persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. According to what we can see above, this indicates that each person in the Trinity possesses the same divine characteristics. To put it another way, no one person within the Trinity is more God than the rest. What more do you know?

The Holy Spirit is more than a force—He’s a Person.

The holy spirit, as the third and last part of the Trinity, is both a person and a personal being. This can be seen in a number of various ways. First and foremost, the Holy Spirit is referred to as “he” in both the Old and New Testament texts, and he is referred to as a “person” throughout the New Testament (John 6:63; 14:26; Rom. 8:11, 16, 26; 1 John 5:6). Following are a few examples of how the Holy Spirit might be wounded, opposed, and even insulted as we’ll see in the references below. These things cannot be accomplished by an impersonal power.

For the second time, before ascending to heaven, Jesus stated that he would send the Holy Spirit to serve as a counselor similar to himself (John 14:26).

In contrast to gravity, which is an impersonal force that can neither counsel nor educate individuals, the Holy Spirit is capable of both.

By examining these two examples, we can see that the Holy Spirit is much more than a mere force; he is the third and last part of the Trinity. Here are other references to the attributes of the holy spirit, which will help to tie this discussion together well.

  1. The word “person” is used to refer to him in several places in the Bible. He speaks (2 Sam. 23:2
  2. Acts 1:16
  3. 10:19
  4. 13:2
  5. 28:25–26
  6. Heb. 3:7–8
  7. Rev. 2:7
  8. 14:13
  9. 22:17)
  10. He searches (1 Cor. 2:11)
  11. He may be grieved (Isa. 63:10
  12. Eph. 4:30)
  13. He can be resisted (Acts 7:5)

By now, you’re probably saying to yourself, “This is fine and all, but what on earth does the Holy Spirit do these days?” That’s an excellent question, and I appreciate you posing it.

9 ways the Holy Spirit works in your life today

The Holy Spirit is not a bystander in the Trinity; rather, he is an active participant. From the beginning of time, he has been involved in the tale of redemption, and here are nine examples of how he is at work in your life right now.

1. He makes known the presence of Jesus

The Holy Spirit is not a renegade part of the Trinity who is out to get himself into trouble. His fundamental role in our lives and in the world today is to act as a mediator between us and the physical presence of Jesus Christ. In theological terms, this refers to the work of the Holy Spirit in making clear to us Jesus Christ’s personal presence in our midst.) He is motivated by the desire to bring honor and credit to Jesus Christ (John 15:26; 16:14; Acts 5:32; 1 Corinthians 12:3; 1 John 4:2), not himself or us, in all of his endeavors.

As a result, we will be led away from loving ourselves and toward loving God and others.

2. He makes us more like Jesus

There’s one very vital fact to remember about the Holy Spirit: He’s completely apart from sin. To put it another way, the Holy Spirit develops holiness inside us in general terms. He will condemn us of our sins (John 15:8–11), and he will guide us to become more and more like him. As we walk in the Spirit (Gal. 5:16) and keep our steps in line with the Spirit (Gal. 5:25), the Holy Spirit will peel away our desire for sin and transform us into more of Jesus (Gal. 5:16, 18).

3. He helps us understand the Bible

The Holy Spirit’s relationship with the Bible is comprised of two distinct aspects. As a result, he provided inspiration for the composition of the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20–21), and he aids us in our understanding of the Bible (John 16:13, 1 Corinthians 2:10–11, Heb. 3:17, 10:15). You will be guided by the Holy Spirit when it comes to comprehending a text from Scripture and how that passage affects your life. According to Romans 1:16–16, the Holy Spirit will carry out his work through your personal Bible reading as well as through family and friends, and most importantly, through public proclamation of the gospel and the Bible.

It’s also a good idea to pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance when you’re in a position to teach the Bible to your family, friends, small group, or church.

4. He calls you to work

As well as calling individuals to believe in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit directs us toward fulfilling a certain vocation or mission. This means that the God of the universe will lead you through the process of making your professional choices.

At times, our lives may appear to be a haphazard jumble of events that are only weakly related yet are nevertheless tied together, but this is not the case at all. You may rest assured that God is watching over you and guiding your life—even at the workplace. Here are only a few illustrations:

  • The Holy Spirit requested that Barnabas and Saul be set apart “for the work to which they had been called” (Acts 13:2)
  • They were granted this request. According to Acts 8:26–40, the Holy Spirit prompted Philip to assist an Ethiopian eunuch in understanding the Old Testament. According to Acts 16:6–7, the Holy Spirit even banned Paul from traveling to particular locations in order to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.

We may experience divine guidance in our decisions from the Holy Spirit from time to time. In most cases, however, the Holy Spirit leads us through the usual ebbs and flows of daily existence. In as much as you put your confidence in God (Prov. 3:5–6), study the Bible (Rom. 12:1–2), and seek godly advice (Prov. 11:14), the Holy Spirit will guide you into the task to which you have been called.

5. He empowers you for service

The Holy Spirit also provides us with the ability to serve others. This implies that he makes it possible for us to carry out the mission to which we have been called. Joshua (Num. 27:18), Saul (1 Sam. 11:6), David (1 Sam. 16:13), and a host of other characters in the Old Testament demonstrate the Holy Spirit’s powerful presence in their lives in order to achieve what they were called to do. In the New Testament, we discover that he provided the authority for Jesus’ earthly ministry (Luke 4:14), the early disciples (Acts 1:8), and the preaching of the gospel (Mark 16:15).

  1. 1:5).
  2. This illustrates how God is capable of performing his job via the ordinary, ordinary, and even rejected individuals of society, which is something I personally like and appreciate God for.
  3. So, if you’re reading this now, take heart and remember to be modest.
  4. 1:27).

6. He helps you pray

(Rom. 8:26–27) The Holy Spirit is actively at work in our lives, assisting us in our prayer lives. There will be times in your Christian life when you will feel inadequate in your prayer life or when you will have no clue what to pray for. This is a given. When we are unsure of how to pray for God’s will in a given situation, the Holy Spirit will guide us through the process of discovery. Whenever you find yourself in one of these situations, remember to pray for the Holy Spirit’s assistance in your time of need.

7. He guides you

The Holy Spirit also directs us (Gal. 5:16–25; see also Acts 8:29–30; 13:2; 15:7–9; 16:6; Rom. 8:14–15:20). His actions included leading Jesus into the desert (Matt. 4:1), providing direct counsel to Philip (Acts 8:29), and even later transporting him bodily (Acts 8:39–40). As much as the Holy Spirit is at work in our lives, directing us on a deep and intimate level, the Scriptures say that we have a responsibility to assist him in his work by “living in the Spirit” (Rom. 8:4; Gal. 5:16). It is not enough to pray and wait for a specific emotion to come.

8. He empowers you for building the church

Jesus is alive and well, and he is establishing his kingdom on earth. It is not via political activity or military strength that he is able to build his church. The proclamation of the gospel is the means through which his church is built. God hasn’t abandoned us in the midst of his activity, which is a blessing. He gave the Holy Spirit to us in order to strengthen our evangelistic endeavors. This empowerment comes from the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to be witnesses (1 Corinthians 12:8), guides our evangelistic efforts (2 Corinthians 9:24-25), and empowers our evangelistic activities (Acts 8:26, 29).

(Acts 4:38, 31; 6:10; 1 Thess. 1:5; 1 Pet. 1:12). We are able to proclaim the gospel because of the Holy Spirit’s assistance in enabling, leading, and equipping us in our endeavor to honor Jesus Christ.

9. He gives you spiritual gifts

The Holy Spirit also acts through us, as shown by the spiritual talents we have been given (1 Cor. 12:11). In the same way, he does not offer us these talents for our own selfish gain. He bestows gifts on us for the benefit of the whole church (1 Cor. 12:7). This means that we are given spiritual gifts to use in the service of the church’s growth. He also provides us gifts so that we might be of service to others (1 Pet. 4:10). God also grants some spiritual gifts, such as the ability to speak in tongues and prophecy, as a warning to unbelievers (1 Cor.

Unbelievers may be shown God’s grandeur through a miraculous manifestation of spiritual talents at various times throughout history.

12:3–8; 1 Cor.

We are unable to select the presents that we will get.

Over to you

This shows that the Holy Spirit is lot less mysterious than Cousin It, and significantly more useful as a result. By making the presence of Jesus known in our lives, making us more like Jesus, assisting us in understanding the Bible, enabling us for service and evangelism, assisting us in prayer, directing us, and bestowing spiritual gifts, he is actively working in our lives. Instead of ignoring the Holy Spirit, let us embrace his characteristics and who he is as a member of the Trinity, and learn to walk more closely with him as we grow in our understanding of him.
