Throughout, he writes in a clear and entertaining language, and he is a trustworthy resource for biblical discipleship and leadership. While reading this book, I loved how Mark brought together theory and practice by sharing examples from his own life and encouraging the reader to consider how they are most equipped to teach others. Personally, I found this book to be both challenging and encouraging, as the necessity of discipleship was brought home to me, and I was shocked to learn how little I had thought about this critical topic before! 039

Is a book I hope will be widely read among Christians because I believe anybody who reads it will be equipped and inspired to assist others follow Jesus.

When I was younger, I recall preparing to give a Sunday school session on discipleship. It was years ago. As I sought to acquire resources, I discovered that the closet was strangely devoid of supplies. As important as discipleship is to the local church, I am encouraged to see a renewed emphasis on this issue in both local churches and publishing houses, which will help fill the shelves of the church library with useful books. The biblical teaching is developed and used in this context, demonstrating the doctrine’s core value of being oriented toward others.

Dever believes that the local church should serve as a focal point for discipleship.

The solution to the issue of how is provided in the concluding section.

However, rather than reorganizing the church or advocating for a new ecclesiological framework, Dever proposes that we lean into what the church has always been intended to accomplish, but with an eye toward discipleship.

Our daily encounters with one another should assist others in their pursuit of Jesus.

Discipleship, on the other hand, does not come to an end with these “regular occurrences.” Dever also advocates the deliberate, focused interactions that are created around one-on-one sessions that have specific purposes and outcomes in mind, as well as the use of technology to facilitate these relationships.

However, my concern with this pattern is that we may just check the discipleship box by meeting for 30 minutes every other week and calling it a day.

By taking our discipleship connections out of the Starbucks corner table and into our Sunday morning gatherings and beyond, we will be able to magnify the benefit of those Starbucks sessions by orders of magnitude.

Discipling Others: How to Assist Others in Following Jesus by Mark With the publication of Dever, we have reached the eighth installment of The Dever Chronicles. In order for a book on discipling to be useful, it must attempt to answer two essential problems. They are as follows: 1) What exactly is discipling?

There are certain issues that we exaggerate in order to make them appear more difficult than they actually are or than they actually require. They look tough because we define them in difficult ways, or because we fail to define them at all, which makes them appear difficult. These are some of the ways that “discipling” might suffer. Perhaps it is helpful to characterize discipling as follows: “Assistance in leading people to follow Jesus.” That’s not that difficult, is it? According to the definition, “discipleship is the purposeful act of providing spiritual good to someone in order to help him or her grow more in the image of Christ.” If discipleship is a phrase that refers to personally following Christ, discipling is a straightforward subset that refers to assisting someone else in following Christ.

The series is divided into nine parts: expositional preaching, biblical theology, the gospel, conversion, evangelism, church membership, church discipline, discipleship and growth, and church The author, Dever, claims that Christianity is not for loners or individualists while explaining the necessity for this book.

In Discipling, Mark Dever continues a series of publications by Nine Marks Ministries titled “Building Healthy Churches.” The book is the latest in the series. So far, each of the books in the series that I’ve read gives a concise and practical guidance with the obvious purpose of building local churches, and I’m looking forward to reading the others. In a time when books on the subject of discipleship are being produced at an alarming rate, this book offers a fresh perspective from a seasoned and respected pastor.

Summary

This brief book is divided into three sections (a total of 10 chapters), with each section focusing on the questions of what, where, and how to be a follower of Jesus Christ. Throughout Part One, Dever presents his biblical case for discipling and defines what he means by discipling: “deliberately doing spiritual good to someone so that he or she may be more like Christ.” Part Two has four chapters in which Dever discusses the importance of discipling (13). The contrast between discipling and discipleship is made by him, and he uses the term discipleship to indicate a Christian’s personal commitment to Christ.

Part Two of Nine Marks contends that the local church is the “natural habitat for discipling,” in the words of the author.

In the end, Part Three answers the how question and brings the book to a close by providing a wealth of practical insight geared toward the objective of leading the church into discipleship.

Evaluation

This small book ought to be read by a large number of people since it provides three distinctive additions to its topic that, in my opinion, will considerably prepare Christians to engage in the process of discipling others. First and foremost, Dever’s notion of disciplining makes the practice attainable for the average churchgoer. Third, Dever just has a wealth of practical knowledge to share with the world.

Simply reading the final chapter is well worth the purchase price of the book, and Jonathan Leeman’s conclusion, in which he shares observations on Dever’s life as someone who has been discipled by him, is rich with practical insights.

In this passage, he argues that power appears to be advantageous primarily to those who do not possess it.

God grants authority with the accompanying duty that the person who has received the authority would use it for the goal of benefitting others, which is what the Bible says. “Those who are under good rule are blessed” (102).

Conclusion

Disciplingby Mark Dever is a fantastic resource for the Christian community. Despite the fact that the book is approachable and practical, it also contains novel ideas that distinguish it from many other publications on discipling. This is a book that I strongly recommend.
