Leading Family Style!

I miss Potluck Dinners. Some of you are nodding your head in agreement, and others have just lost respect for me. Doesn’t matter – just keep reading. Acts 2:42 says “And they were continually devoting themselves to the apostles teaching, and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.” So that brings me back to those potluck dinners we use to have before Wednesday night services. Quality time with nice people. Mostly good food. It felt like family. Right now I’m feeling a little envious of those of you who still practice this. But I have to admit once I became the one who had to make the meal to contribute while corralling young kiddos, I was relieved when our church stopped that tradition.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for changing with the times. But some things need to be done differently, not just done away with. As leaders, it seems we are pretty good at listening to teaching and praying – but according to the verse above, that’s only part of it. We are missing what’s in the middle – spending time together through fellowship and breaking bread. Community. And when learning, community, and prayer all happen, look what the next verse (Acts 2:43) says: “And everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many signs and wonders were taking place”. I believe trust formed by spending time together is a missing piece to greater fulfillment and God-sized outcomes.

So how do you do/find community without reinstating potlucks? First, you need to recognize your need for it (it’s Biblical – that’s good enough for me!). Then, you need to be intentional about it – build fellowship time with your team into your schedule because it seldom just happens. And third – you need to be a part of a community where you can grow. To borrow some words from Experiencing God, find out where other like-minded leaders are and join them. You don’t have to cook. Just find a way do, be, and share together. Like family.

It’s really no fun to lead alone. To find out more about community, we have two offerings for you:

  • June 3 in Austin at our Women’s Ministry Matters gathering.
  • August 1 in Dallas at our Leaders Intensive, Sharpen. Deepen. Broaden.

Visit our website for details on each – www.provenway.org/events. We’d love to have you join us!
