The Importance of Vitamin N

by Sharmon Coleman, ProvenWay Vitamin N.  The most important vitamin, or at least that’s what the book title suggested in the airport bookstore.  I was scanning titles for a relaxing vacation read and saw the book Vitamin N:  The Essential Guide to a Nature Rich Life.  A closer inspection of this book’s content revealed that this new vitamin is nature.  The book proposes that daily doses of nature are vital to our physical and mental health by lowering stress levels and improving immune response.  Although I bought a different book, I left the bookstore pondering the importance of nature.

In my life, God often speaks to me in what Margaret Feinberg calls a “sacred echo,” which is the same topic coming up several times in a short period of time.  After I saw the book in the airport, an article in the July 2016 issue of Time Magazine called “The Healing Power of Nature” arrived in my mailbox.  The article outlined the newly discovered benefits of daily time spent in nature.  Some of the benefits listed are:

  • Lowered blood pressure
  • Increased sense of awe which puts our lives in perspective (Psalm 8:3)
  • Cancer fighting cells promoted
  • Possible help with ADHD symptoms
  • Help with depression and anxiety

As I assembled each of these puzzle pieces into a cohesive image in my mind, Psalm 19:1 came to mind;  “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.”   What man has just discovered, Scripture has known from the start.  When we connect with the creation, we connect with The Creator if we are mindful.

Kingdom Servant, my guess is that summer affords you the opportunity to slow down.  Why not make a concerted effort to get outdoors and drink in the gifts of creation from Father God, reaping the spiritual, mental and physical benefits? As we head into another ministry year, may we daily take time to get outside, whether it’s five minutes on the porch for coffee, sitting by a window for lunch, or maybe a 20 minute walk around the neighborhood after dinner.  After all, He put Adam and Eve in a GARDEN where He WALKED with them (Genesis 3:8), not a 4 bedroom, 3 bath house.  Man has discovered the physical and mental benefits of such a habit.    You know the real reason for the benefits of this new “vitamin” . .  . your body, soul, and spirit connects with the Triune Godhead.  I double dog dare you to add this ‘vitamin’ to your health regime!
