How to Fulfill Your God-Given Purpose: Lessons from a Tree 2.0
by Sharmon Coleman
Last month we learned that the most important step to fulfilling your God-given purpose is having a deep, ongoing relationship with Jesus. Like an oak tree needs deep, healthy roots to provide stability and nourishment, we need to be rooted in Christ (Col. 2:6) in order to be a fruit producing tree to display His splendor. So, roots = relationship.
If an oak tree only developed roots, we would never see this Oak of Righteousness! Only after establishing a deep and wide root system does the acorn start growing the trunk which needs to be strong and solid in order to support the weight of the branches and fruit. What is our “trunk” in this oak tree metaphor? Colossians 2:7 says we need to be rooted AND BUILT UP IN HIM.
How are we BUILT UP IN HIM?
By knowing & believing who He says we are in Christ.
Who are we in Christ?
The Scriptures are filled with who God says we are at the moment of salvation. Below are just a few:
Chosen (Ephesians 1:4)
Lavishly loved (1 John 3:1)
Accepted (Romans 15:7)
Forgiven (Ephesians 1:7)
The apple of His eye (Zechariah 2:8
His treasured possession (Deuteronomy 7:6)
Why do we need to know and believe who He says we are in Him?
Because our identity gives us much needed God-fidence
Because we have an enemy who will try to discourage us every step of the way of fulfilling the purpose for which we were specifically created
Because the Hebrew definition for satan means accuser/adversary
Because we will believe the lies that he whispers in our ears and give up
Because our identity is our weapon against his attacks
What are the accusations whispered in your ear? Some of mine are:
Whisper: You’re a screw up!
Answer: My God tells me that I’m His masterpiece! (Ephesians 2:10)
Whisper: You are a mistake!
Answer: He formed me in my mother’s womb before one day came to be (Psalm 139:13 – 16)
Whisper: Who do you think you are? You can’t do that!
Answer: All things are possible with God! (Matthew 19:26) He has made me competent as His minister! (2 Corinthians 3:54-6)
Whisper: Do you really think God will use you after you ______________?
Answer: God uses ALL things for the good of them who love God and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)
Beloved, next to your deep and daily relationship with Jesus (roots), you need to know & BELEVE who you are in Christ (trunk) if you want to fulfill your specific purpose and become an Oak of Righteousness for the display of His splendor (Isaiah 61:3).
